SEMEN POLICY ON BULLS IN SALE

EPDS

RANCH LOCATION

EPDs current August 6, 2018.

GLOSSARY

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first–calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then just as with EPDs zero in on the unit difference between the bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. X 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

PARTNERSHIP LOTS

In the case of bull partnership lots, the new partner will have first choice to decide what 60 days they will be able to breed the bull. All decisions relating to the possession, showing, promotion, collecting of semen, and marketing will be mutually agreed upon prior to the transaction with both parties dividing all future expenses and net revenue. Female partnership lots will be owned 50/50 with all future production being coowned. The partner with possession will receive $300 per year for maintenance from the other partner. A partner that is selling their interest must give the other partner the right to match any bona fide guaranteed offer prior to selling their interest to a third party. Contract on these lots will be available on sale day.

BURCH CATTLE

This year has been a transition year for Burch Cattle in more ways than one. John David is out of the Air Force and working as a contractor with the FAA in Oklahoma City. He has recently bought the heart of the cow herd from Rickey and plans to continue to breed Simbrah cattle for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, Rickey continues to breed a few registered Simbrahs and a number of commercial cows, in addition to his real estate business. John David plans on moving back to the Hempstead area to focus more on building the genetics that was started over 20 years ago by his father.

We would like to take the time to welcome everyone to Synergy. A big thanks goes out to Tim for all of his help and support. And thank you to all of the juniors, parents, breeders and everyone who comes out and makes this a huge success. It would not be possible without you. We hope you like the lots we have chosen for this year’s sale. We have been trying to improve the quality of our cowherd by utilizing superior genetics and proven cow families and hope you can see the improvements we’ve made. We have added to our bull battery with Fireball, Detonator, Advantage, Polled Patron and Possibilities.

The future of our Simbrah cattle operation includes expanding our show heifer market initially with plans to break into the bull and replacement heifer market 5-10 years down the road. The Simbrah breed has one of the best junior programs out there and we believe it raises a good well-rounded individual. It is definitely something that we will continue to invest in while growing our cattle operation.

We believe we have brought a nice set of young heifers that will have success in the show ring and then make nice additions to your cowherd when their show careers are finished. We also brought in a good set of bred cows, which have some of the leading lines in the breed. We look forward to visiting with everyone and want to show you our cattle at Synergy XI.

Thank you to all of the buyers and sale participants. A special thank you to Tim Smith and Smith Genetics for allowing us to be a part of this sale and hosting a great event that continues to grow the Simbrah breed. Be sure and visit our website at www.burchcattle.com and also our Facebook page @Burchcattle

HENSGENS BROTHERS CATTLE

Hensgens Brothers Cattle is owned by the Hensgens family and was started in 1985. Simgenetics have always been a focus from the beginning for our purebred and commercial operation. Being from south Louisiana, we have utilized the Simmental breed to create our own F1 Simbrah from our purebred Brahman herd to produce cattle that can perform in our hot climate. Diversification is a crucial factor to us, as we believe appealing to both the commercial and purebred markets is imperative for any breed’s survival. In our commercial herd, the Simbrah bulls we are using are producing a consistent set of calves that are turning order buyers’ heads, while the replacement heifers are easily marketed. In recent years, Hensgens Brothers has invested in many great Simbrah cattle to rejuvenate our registered herd. We enjoy showing some of our cattle, as we and our junior kids are seen at many of the Simbrah shows. The Hensgens family is very appreciative of Tim Smith for being such a great ambassador of the Simbrah breed and hosting such an event as Synergy that does a tremendous job promoting not only the breed but youth as well. We look forward to seeing many of you at the sale and know you are always welcomed to call or visit us in Rayne, Louisiana.

HALLAK RANCH

I first came to Texas in 1985 from Egypt. It was always my dream to own a ranch and cattle. I made good on that dream and from 1985-1998, ranched outside of Athens, Texas and established one of the premier Simbrah herds. HR Power House I is a product of Hallak Ranch, as well as the female HR Memphis Belle. I returned to Egypt for several years to handle family business. Then my wife, Malika, who is from Paris, France and I, returned to Athens in 2011 and began building our Simbrah program again. We were able to purchase an embryo that was a full sib to HR Power House I and a daughter of Memphis Belle. In addition, we are using Mr. Strack Y254 heavily in the herd and we recently teamed up with Monte Christo to purchase PRR Revolution 739B. We are offering semen on this sire and there are calves on the ground for you to evaluate. Our ranch is 6.5 miles south of Athens, off of Hwy 19 and we invite you to come visit.

MCCRARY FARMS

REAVIS FARMS

This year marks our 19th year as Simbrah and Simmental breeders, and we could not be more excited for the quality offering in Synergy XI! Mark and I continue working to improve the quality of our herd by strategically utilizing the optimum sire power both breeds have to offer. Take a holistic view of our herd pedigrees and you will find the influence of many breed greats, including Satisfies, Inspired, Nu Approach, Sargeant, Charismatic, Inspired, Smith Matt N Black whose daughters sell today, and our new Cut Above Simmental herd sire, Smith Dustin N Black. We are long-time proponents of the Simbrah youth development programs and have been avid supporters and sponsors of many local FFA and 4-H events. Our farm is located in the northeast corner of Texas in the town of De Kalb, just a few miles from the Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana borders near Texarkana - come by and see our cattle and now five grandchildren, including our newest addition Shiloh Jude McCrary, who is pictured! We consider ourselves fortunate to be a member of the Synergy group and a special THANK YOU goes out to Tim Smith & the Smith Genetics team, who continuously work so hard to make Synergy the event of the year!

We are a diversified family operation with Simbrahs, cotton, grain sorghum, onions and watermelons. We have been involved with Simbrahs since 1987 and are still excited about the breed. We have our best calves, yet, on the ground from sires including Charismatic, Nu Wave II, Sargeant, Smith Evan, RFI Thunderstruck, Lubbock, Smith Also N Red and We also have an interest in Satisfies. We continue to have success in the show ring as we raised RFI Real Deal, the 2014 ASA National and National at San Antonio Champion and the 2015 and 2016 National Champion, Smith RFI Sweet Deb, as well as the 2018 National Champion Female, Smith RFI Double Takes. We also bred Jane Hunt’s 2017 National Champion Female, RFI Smith Faith. Also to our credit is Smith RFI Go-To 708E, the 2018 International Reserve Grand Champion Bull. We are very proud of our offering for Synergy XI and extend an invitation to you to the fall event of the breed.

FRALISE FARM AND RANCH, LLC/TRIPLE J RANCH

MONTE CHRISTO CATTLE CO.

The 2017/2018 season has been a year of growth and improvements at Monte Christo Ranch. This past spring, we produced more calves and more quality than ever before. Building on our acquisitions of the Mossy Creek herd, we have added depth in all aspects of offspring quality. In terms of bone, muscle, femininity and overall confirmation, we are producing the best females available, in quantity.

On our farm, we strive to raise cattle that are gentle, hardy, structurally correct and able to perform off the land. We have gone to a forage based, intensive rotational grazing program. We want cattle that can go to the show and that will be able to thrive on pasture later as breeding adults. We have an extensive heifer development program aimed at the replacement female. We continue to improve the quality of our herd through the introduction of superior Simbrah genetics. Through sire power and the influence of proven cow families we continue to capitalize on some of the best Simbrah has to offer. A special thank you to Tim Smith, for your guidance, mentorship, and invitation to participate in Synergy. We are pleased to present a few fruits of our labor at this year’s Synergy Sale. We stand behind our cattle, bid with confidence! Come and see us for Rao’s breakfast and coffee at the event!

The improvement is also reflected by the additions we’ve made in bull power. We’ve now had a full year of service from Smith McCrary Fireball and PRR Revolution along with the RFI champion, Red Raider. We have a bull line-up producing deep red and red blaze faced heifers that appeal to anyone’s replacement heifer program. This season we will be adding two new young bulls. One that Tim made for us with his embryo program sired by Smith CRC Lubbock and he is a slick haired deep solid red powerhouse named MCR Big John. In addition, we’re bringing in HR Awesome, a blaze faced champion of the San Antonio Livestock show this past spring.

DIAMOND RF FARMS

Welcome to Synergy XI and hope everyone has had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. We would like to again thank Tim for hosting the sale and show for kids and parents. Diamond RF is located near San Antonio and although our herd is small we strive to focus on the quality of our cattle. We have been utilizing a new bull we joint own with Smith Genetics, Established 612C and have been pleased with the calf crop thus far. We are offering a couple of his first calves in Synergy XI. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding our lots.

Along with additions of these new genetics and expanding numbers, we’re meeting the challenge of additional forage production by introducing an additional 100 acres of automated irrigation. This allows us a higher stocking rate as well as the ability to produce cooler season clover to add higher protein green forage for our fall born calf crop. The result is better weaning weights and earlier maturity for the feeder cattle going into the feed lot. Our heifer offering for this year’s Synergy XI are represented by our sires; RFI Red Raider, the 2013 San Antonio champion and our LMC Suave son and are bred to PRR Unanimous Decision, the 2017 “Pick of the Herd” we purchased from Pine Ridge. As always, Margie and I invite you all to visit Monte Christo Ranch and see that we have a lot going on!

SMITH GENETICS

It doesn’t seem like it has been 11 years since we set out to host an event for the breed and market great genetics from a number of top herds. It’s been a great experience for us and contributes to our excitement for the breed. We are proud to serve as hosts and look forward to this our 11th annual event. Smith Genetics strives to be a progressive breeder and we diligently use genomic data to complement visual appraisal of our herd. We also are participating in the Genetic Development Center testing program for bulls. This allows us to gain feed intake information and provide additional genomic data to the ASA. We continue to hold our annual Smith Genetics Cow Camp for junior and new breeders and have for more than 25 years. We are extremely proud to work with these junior exhibitors, their families and breeders. Our genetics continue to excel in the show rings of the junior and open shows. Smith Genetics includes Simbrah and Simmental cattle in both Texas and Kentucky, as well as a registered horse division in Tim’s home state of Kentucky. Tim’s family maintain the Kentucky division and they are expanding the number of cattle in their operation. We have developed a number of elite cow families, who have had a very positive impact on the breed, including Bella Bella, Priceless, Eleanor and several more. We are proud to be the breeders of the following sires, who are being utilized heavily in this breed: Smith Nu Wave II, Fireball, Detonator, Nu Approach, Satisfies, Lubbock, Andy, Matt, Stout and William, along with young up and coming sires that we have bred, Born To Dare, Secret To Success, Just Because, Established, Carson, Have No Fear and Smith RFI Go-To 708E, the 2018 International Reserve Grand Champion Bull. We are thankful to each for your part and we are proud to host Synergy. Here’s a big welcome to you to the event and to Smith Genetics.

Using Indexes to Advance Your Program By Wade Shafer

Economic selection indexes were first introduced by Iowa State scientist, Lenoy Hazel, in 1943. Best described as “genetic accounting”, economic indexes blend an animal’s genetic levels along with commodity prices to predict the impact the animal will have on pro t when used for breeding. Economic indexes have long been accepted by animal geneticists as the most effective means of making genetic progress for profit and, consequently, have been heavily utilized by the pig, poultry and dairy industries for years. Not surprisingly, the genetic progress made on those species through the use of indexes has been phenomenal--far eclipsing the progress made in beef cattle. By using ASA’s All Purpose and Terminal Indexes, you too can leverage the power of the economic selection index - there is no better tool in the beef industry for making selection decisions!

Simply Moves is a proven 5-year-old donor cow that already produced a major champion, Smith Paul Smiling Times that recently was awarded 2018 MAS Showdown Reserve Grand Champion title with Cody Labry on the halter. This donor female is backed by one of the strongest cow families in the breed and the most popular sire, Smith Satisfies. Opportunities to buy proven donors like this don’t happen often, but with the relocation to Florida for the Paul Family we have decided to sell this female. Take a look at her daughter selling today, Smith PKS Saida with her heifer calf at side, and consider buying the entire family to build a cow family around. The guesswork has been removed on these females! DNA tested and qualifies as a donor. Pasture exposed to Smith Have No Fear 909B, ASA #3272061 from 4/15/18-5/27/18, safe in calf.

No better way to start off our Synergy sale offering than featuring the two very first Established 612C daughters born at the ranch this year. Kuhlman Cellars and Becker Vineyards are two of the most sought after and respected wineries in Fredericksburg and my personal favorites. In true wino fashion, I present to you, Miss Kuhlman and Ms Becker. Designed with longevity in mind, these lovely ladies both excel in skeletal correctness and broodiness, with a touch of pizzazz and eye appeal. Born a few months apart, it’s hard to pick a sale favorite--do you want a softer featured female or one with a touch more power and boldness, either way you win. Established 612C was used sparingly last year, only selecting a limited number of females to break in this new three-quarter sire out of Smith Stout and the only red full sister to Irreplaceable. Clearly stamping his calves with solid color patterns, smooth heads and skeletal correctness, this is just one of many calf crops to come for Established 612C. Good luck with picking a favorite on sale day. I’ve been watching them since day one and I still can’t decide. Both are open.

Here is an opportunity brought on by the drought we’ve been in, yes, it is year two. This heifer is out of our Golden Charm donor, who goes back to Golden Glory. This girl has held her own with very little green grass, so we’re confident she will do exceptional in lusher pastures. Don’t let her name fool you though, this Golden girl is black. Her pedigree reads like a who’s who list of the breed. Some of the sires include Nu Wave II, Spectrum, Blackfoot, JW Black, Power House, and Sargeant. Cow families include greats like Keepsake, Diva, Oprah, Madam X, Golden Charm, and Golden Girl. We have added Steel Force and Ciao Bella to her calf’s pedigree, as she is bred to Smith Possibilities, the 2016 National Champion Percentage Bull. Not too shabby. She is a trait leader in Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight, and ranks high in Average Daily Gain, Maternal Weaning Weight, Carcass weight, and Terminal Index. Two units of semen on any 7N owned herd sire is available for future use on this female. Pasture exposed to Smith Possibilities ASA#3003101 from 9/17/17-3/1/18.
