GLOSSARY

RANCH LOCATION

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first–calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then just as with EPDs zero in on the unit difference between the bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. X 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

Sale Participants HENSGENS BROTHERS CATTLE

The Hensgens Family couldn’t be happier than to be a part of Simbrah Synergy! Simgenetics have always been a focus from the beginning for our purebred and commercial operation. We utilize our purebred Brahman herd to not only produce Brahmans, but Simbrah cattle as well. Over the last few years, our Simbrah herd has changed gears and have been making their marks in the ring and pasture. A highlight in the ring for our family this year was the Reserve National Champion Simbrah bull title with Smith Hensbros Triumph. Diversification is a crucial factor to us, as we believe appealing to both the commercial and purebred markets. One of the highlights the last few years is the tremendous set of calves that our Simbrah bulls have produced on our commercial herd. To us, it only makes it easier to develop a bull market when a buyer can see the outcome in their future investment.

NIESCHWIETZ 7N RANCH

We would like to take the time to welcome everyone to SYNERGY XII. A big thanks goes out to Tim for all of his help and support. And thank you to all of the juniors, parents, breeders and enthusiasts who attend and make this event a huge success. It would not be possible without you. We hope you like the cattle we have chosen for this year’s sale. We have been working on improving the quality of our cowherd by utilizing superior genetics and proven cow families and hope you can see the improvements we’ve made. We’ve added some new names to our bull battery, some you may know already, some you will be hearing a lot of in the coming years. Be looking for Deal Again, Grading Up, Potential, Savage, Intimidator, Accelerator and 50/8. Deal Again’s, Grading Up’s, and Accelerator’s first calves have hit the ground and are really nice; they will be back out on cows by sale time. Savage has been out on a small set of cows with his first calves hitting the ground this fall. Intimidator and 50/8 will be covering their first sets of cows this fall. And we still have the older, proven bulls that will be going out again as well.

We have had one of our best calf crops this year and are excited for our offering in Synergy this year. The pedigrees of our offering have some unique crosses that we are proud to have created. You can bid with confidence in these heifers as they will be competitive and be in your front pasture for years to come. The ever changing field of agriculture has us always thinking progressively to utilize as many of the tools as possible to be as predictable as we can. The old saying, “you can only manage what you can measure” has been hitting home for us lately. With that being said, our emphasis on collecting as much data through accurate weights, DNA and carcass will be in full force. Thanks to all of our buyers last year and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Synergy this year! And remember, you are all welcomed to come visit us in Cajun Country!

We are highlighting several genetic lines in this year’s sale. They have proven themselves and are really difficult to part with. We are entering the fourth year of the drought down here in the Valley; the last measurable rain was at sale time last year, so they are up for grabs. The breds went into the RGV Heifer Development test, which started right after last year’s sale. We focused on our Ambition and Powerman bulls. Ambition is a Satisfies x Diva and Powerman is a Nu Wave II x Oprah. They dominated the test and we will talk about some of the data in our lot footnotes. We also highlighted our Possibilities bull, a Steel Force x Ciao Bella. All but one of our halter prospects are out of him and we used one of his sons, Potential, to cover the breds in this year’s offering. Please evaluate our cattle and let us know what you think about them. These are the types of replacement females we are raising. We hope you like our offering.

MONTE CHRISTO CATTLE CO.

It’s become a family tradition to attend the fall sale in Giddings each September. Synergy XI will be our 5th trip to the Smith Genetics ranch to visit our friends and fellow Simbrah breeders and enjoy a great weekend of networking and informational exchange in a continuing effort to promote the great Simbrah breed.

BURCH CATTLE

This past spring, we have acquired an additional property to expand our steer backgrounding and heifer development capability. Following weaning, it’s our practice to graze our steers for 60/80 days to “cheapen” the cost of gain on good forage, then place a 700+ .lb healthy steer in the feedlot to enhance our chances of a successful outcome. At the same time, we can now offer heifers from weaning age, yearlings and up to and including bred heifers. Check out our Facebook page for photos of 80 plus heifers now available. Approximately 20 are now bred to Fireball. Thirty more are ready to breed in December and the balance are to be bred next spring to the bull of your choice.

It’s hard to believe another year has gone by. We have recently purchased some land in Oklahoma and will soon be running registered Simbrah cattle north of the Red River. Our Texas operation will remain unchanged, thanks to the help of my dad, Rickey Burch. This year we do not have any cattle to offer in the sale, but we are excited about the future of our program and I am certain next year we will have a strong group to present. Exciting news! We recently added Smith Born to Dare to our program and we will have calves on the ground just prior to sale day.

We’ve brought two very nice red heifers to Synergy this year from two different herd sires. Our Fireball herd sire out of Smith Satisfies is producing outstanding females for us. They are dark red, very feminine and fertile. The first heifer is a Fireball daughter bred to HR Awesome. Billy Hallak won reserve champion with Awesome at San Antonio in 2017. The second entry is a ZZ Mr Fire daughter that is a granddaughter of Beth and Joe Mercer’s famous Becherovka bull. We bred this heifer to have a Fireball calf next spring. So, we brought two ways to share our great Fireballl bull at Synergy XII. Don’t miss this great genetic combination.

Thank you to Tim Smith for allowing us to participate in the premiere event of the Simbrah breed. I would also like to thank Clarissa Ashworth, Cameron Young, Reavis Farms and Triple J Ranch for purchasing cattle from us in last year’s sale.

Our fall calving season will begin in September and we cordially invite you to come and see a great selection of quality. We got a lot going on!!

MCCRARY FARMS

REAVIS FARMS

This year marks our 23rd year as Simbrah and Simmental breeders and we could not be more excited for the quality offering in Synergy XII. Mark and I continue working to improve the quality of our herd by strategically utilizing the optimal sire power both breeds have to offer. Take a holistic view of our herd pedigrees and you will find the influence of many breed greats, including Satisfies, Inspired, New Approach, Sargeant, Charismatic and Smith Matt N Black. We are long-time proponents of the Simbrah youth development programs and have been avid supporters and sponsors of many FFA and 4-H events. Our farm is located in the northeast corner of Texas just south of DeKalb. We are just a few miles from the Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana borders near Texarkana-you are welcome to come by and see our cattle at any time. We consider ourselves fortunate to be members of the Synergy group and a special THANK YOU goes out to Tim Smith and the Smith Genetics Team, who continuously works hard to make Synergy the event of the year!!

We are proud to be entering our 32nd year as Simbrah breeders. We believe the future of Simbrah has unlimited potential still after all these years. We have incorporated new genetics this past year with the introduction of new bulls into our breeding program. And we use top Simmental sires to infuse more new genetics to improve our EPDs and carcass traits. Our other bulls continue to perform at the top of the Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Gain Test. As we continue to grow our herd, we strive to produce cattle that will thrive in a variety of environments – from tough range conditions to the show ring. As a diversified family farm operation with grain, corn, cotton, and sunflowers, and our emphasis is on producing sweet 1015 onions. We hope you will come by and look at our cattle. We think they could be good additions to your cattle program. Special thanks to Martha Garrett for all she does for us and the Simbrah breed. Last, but not least, we would also like to thank Tim Smith for all his hard work and dedication to the Simbrah breed these many years. And we look forward to seeing everyone at Synergy XII.

DIAMOND RF FARMS

Diamond RF Farms is once again honored to be a part of Synergy and would like to thank Smith Genetics and Tim Smith for the invitation. Each year we improve our breeding, which has allowed us to bring six heifers to the sale that have been sired by Smith DRFF Established, Smith Satisfies or Smith CRC Lubbock. These heifers are gentle and are ready to be shown by any junior that is looking to successfully compete in the show ring. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you have regarding our lots on Friday/ Saturday, September 27/28, 2019. We look forward to an enjoyable weekend visiting with each and every one of you during Synergy weekend.

STRACK FARMS

Our family has been in the Simbrah business since 1983, but the Stracks have always been involved in agriculture since their family arrived from Germany in 1845. For a number of years, we also fed consumers at our family restaurant in Spring, Texas. The ranch was started by my dad, Don and his brother, Ernie and myself (Keith). Today, my dad and I continue to operate the registered program as Ernie recently passed away. We are located in the Marquez/Normangee area of central, Texas and it is home to about 125 head of Simbrah cows. We made our first purchases in 1983. Over the years, we have seen a number of our cattle excel in the show ring for junior customers and we have been actively involved in the Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association and the area associations within the state. We have been blessed to market our cattle over the years to domestic customers and have sold into Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil.

TEMPERANCE LIVESTOCK COMPANY

We are excited to be a part of Simbrah Synergy XII! Welcome to all of the buyers and guests and thank you to Tim Smith and the sale participants for inviting us to be part of the fun!

This past year, we purchased the Hallak herd and have added those genetics to our program. This is our first year to be involved in Synergy and we feel like we have selected some of our absolute best for our inaugural event--we have some pairs, breds and opens for your consideration. We look forward to seeing you Sept. 27-29th and enjoying good Simbrah cattle.

We are a breeder of quality SimGenetic show cattle located in Henderson, Texas. We started our herd in 2010 in Cypress, Texas with three Smith Genetics heifers that we purchased for our two youngest children, Katarina Axtell and Kaleb Fontenot, to show. We have grown our herd from these humble beginnings and have been in production with our first calf since October of 2011. We have had success both in the show ring and in production with cattle like Charming Moves, Hidden Jewel and Red Jewel and these cattle represent the kind of cattle at the core of our herd. We are thrilled that both Katarina and Kaleb keep an interest in and stay active in the agriculture and beef industry.

FRALISE FARM AND RANCH, LLC/TRIPLE J RANCH

On our farm, we strive to raise cattle that are gentle, hardy, structurally correct and able to perform off the land. We have gone to a forage based, intensive rotational grazing program. We want cattle that can go to the show and that will be able to thrive on pasture later as breeding adults. We have an extensive heifer development program aimed at the replacement female. We continue to improve the quality of our herd through the introduction of superior Simbrah genetics. Through sire power and the influence of proven cow families we continue to capitalize on some of the best Simbrah has to offer. A special thank you to Tim Smith, for your guidance, mentorship, and invitation to participate in Synergy. We are pleased to present a few fruits of our labor at this year’s Synergy Sale. We stand behind our cattle, bid with confidence! Come and see us for Rao’s breakfast and coffee at the event!

In 2017, we took early retirement and re-located to Henderson to focus on our cattle. We continue to seek to produce top end cattle by purchasing breeding interests in bulls like Just Because and developing sires like Red Jewel and Added Benefits from within our herd. We look forward to the impact that their progeny can have on our herd and the breed. Our offerings in Synergy XII represent the calves of Just Because. It’s funny where you end up. We were two career professionals that met as volunteer fire-fighters in the big city and somehow ended up with a herd of cattle in deep East Texas! We are enjoying our recent retirement, finding it amusing that we are busier now than ever before! And it’s not just cattle. Though we may be in denial, we’re also loving being grandparents! Come see us if you’re in the Henderson area. Look us up on our web page at www.temperancelivestockcompany.com or check us out on Facebook @Temperance Livestock Company.

SMITH GENETICS

It doesn’t seem like it has been 12 years since we set out to host an event for the breed and market great genetics from a number of top herds. It’s been a great experience for us and contributes to our excitement for the breed. We are proud to serve as hosts and look forward to this our 12th annual event. Smith Genetics strives to be a progressive breeder and we diligently use genomic data to complement visual appraisal of our herd. We also are participating in the Genetic Development Center testing program for bulls. This allows us to gain feed intake information and provide additional genomic data to the ASA. We continue to hold our annual Smith Genetics Cow Camp for junior and new breeders and have for more than 25 years. We are extremely proud to work with these junior exhibitors, their families and breeders. Our genetics continue to excel in the show rings of the junior and open shows. Smith Genetics includes Simbrah and Simmental cattle in both Texas and Kentucky, as well as a registered horse division in Tim’s home state of Kentucky. Tim’s family maintain the Kentucky division and they are expanding the number of cattle in their operation. We have developed a number of elite cow families, who have had a very positive impact on the breed, including Bella Bella, Priceless, Eleanor and several more. We are proud to be the breeders of the following sires, who are being utilized heavily in this breed: Smith Nu Wave II, Fireball, Detonator, Nu Approach, Satisfies, Lubbock, Andy, Matt, Stout and William, along with young up and coming sires that we have bred, Born To Dare, Secret To Success, Just Because, Established, Carson, Possibilities, Have No Fear, Smith RFI Go-To 708E, the 2018 International Reserve Grand Champion Bull and Smith Hensgens Triumph, the 2019 National Reserve Grand Champion Bull. We are thankful to each for your part and we are proud to host Synergy. Here’s a big welcome to you to the event and to Smith Genetics.

Using Indexes to Advance Your Program By Wade Shafer

Economic selection indexes were first introduced by Iowa State scientist, Lenoy Hazel, in 1943. Best described as “genetic accounting”, economic indexes blend an animal’s genetic levels along with commodity prices to predict the impact the animal will have on pro t when used for breeding. Economic indexes have long been accepted by animal geneticists as the most effective means of making genetic progress for profit and, consequently, have been heavily utilized by the pig, poultry and dairy industries for years. Not surprisingly, the genetic progress made on those species through the use of indexes has been phenomenal--far eclipsing the progress made in beef cattle. By using ASA’s All Purpose and Terminal Indexes, you too can leverage the power of the economic selection index - there is no better tool in the beef industry for making selection decisions!

This donor quality female has a bright productive future and for that reason we are only offering half interest, as people ask us to share our best and we are honoring your wishes. Her dam is a full sister to RFI Debutante and we bred her to Nu Approach to produce the same genetic lines as the two time National Champion, Smith RFI Sweet Deb. 858F has a stacked pedigree with built in performance and maternal power. This female qualifies for the Superbowl and Synergy Showcase. The most important element here is for a progressive buyer to invest on this female and take advantage of the fact that by owning half interest it opens up Smith Genetics entire bull battery for future production on this female - unlimited opportunities. She is one of the first calves out of our new herd sire, Smith Practical 42D. If you came to buy one that will compete on all levels, then you better put a big check mark by this female. Selling ½ interest and ½ possession. We make the commitment of sharing our best at SYNERGY and for that reason alone we are offering the genetics of Breathtaker. This Satisfies daughter was a many times champion in 2015, while being campaigned by Carlye Rodenbeck. She earned her way to our donor pen after producing the herd sire, Smith CRC Reckoning. She carries the floating one-sixthteenth Simmental in her pedigree and her calves show the clean characteristics and meat qualities of this type of mating. Her other sons have sold as competitive show steers – she is definitely one that puts a lot of thickness and muscle in her calves. She has a great set of EPDs ranking her in the top 25% for API and 30% for TI. Seldom are you given the opportunity to purchase interest in a major league donor and don’t forget --- all the bulls in Smith Genetics program are available for matings on this joint owned female – our joint ownership agreements are available for review if you would like a copy. The potential of this young donor has not been tapped and we are ready to gear it up! AI’d to Smith Just Because, ASA #3289413 on 4/14/19. Pasture exposed to Smith Black Cool Cat 218D, ASA #3256843 from 5/1/19 to 6/1/19. Safe in calf.

The “wow factor” is stacked here for sure – she has been a stand out since she stood up and nursed! The list of royalty in this heifer’s pedigree is special, therefore I would expect nothing less than greatness from the newest member of Golden Glory family. When an animal checks all the boxes in terms of basic structure and composition, yet provides a ton of extras to go with it, then you know she’s truly unique. She has that look of pizazz as Richard would say! 3G is a direct descendant of Smith Richer Look, a three-quarter Stout daughter who topped the 2014 Synergy Sale and quickly solidified her position as a young upcoming donor. She is sired by Smith Lubbock, which makes her pedigree a combination of Golden Glory and Bella Bella cow families. Clearly this heifer is a sound product of planned matings with a who’s who of cow power and championships built in. She will be show ready at sale time and qualifies for the Showcase and Superbowl. For this reason, we invested in several daughters and granddaughters of the great 770P to enhance our Simmental program and to serve as a basis for creating a new Simbrah Cow Family – now we are sharing our newest genetic pool with you in Timeless and Flirtatious. We are proud of the outcome! Lubbock was an easy choice to mate with Missy C493 to produce three-quarter cattle because we knew he would add that touch of ear and still maintain the body mass and soft look of the 770P lines. People ask Tim every year, what cow they should buy and build a foundation around, guess what, I’ll make it easy on you. Every year, Tim and I offer a three-quarter female that we think is worthy of donor potential and untimely a foundation for someone else’s program down the road. This year we’ve selected 39G, who comes from the Schnazzie Cow family. For those of you that didn’t know Schnazzie, I’m sorry, but back in 2009 I was given the opportunity to purchase a piece of one of Schnazzie’s daughters to act as a foundation cow for producing fertile three-quarter females, I didn’t pass. I purchased Made to Luv 39W, and with Tim’s help began putting together matings that would enhance the Simbrah cow base, while still moving in a progressive direction as far as phenotype. Five different matings have resulted in five different heifers, all produced out of this cow naturally and sold through this sale exclusively, two Simmentals, and three foundation females that have all averaged $5,000, with the most recent one being retained by Smith Genetics to continue the legacy of the 309J cow family. Built like a true brood cow, 39G brings a unique twist to an already populated cow family, she’s flexible and loose in her joints, while still maintaining a nearly perfect topline and hip, packed with natural dimension and style needed to produce those high end females. Don’t get FRAZZELED when this Schnazzie granddaughter stands in the limelight later down the road, we told you so! Lil Priss is sired by the popular RFI Bad Medicine bull, who is now owned by Aaron Vela. Bad Medicine is also the sire to Olivia Vela’s many time champion, RGV Enigma. He is out of our Smith Hagan Expressive donor, who is also the dam to Jane Hunt’s many time champion RFI Smith Faith. The maternal side for Lil Priss includes the strong maternal sire Charismatic and our popular champion RFI Rio Princess. If Captain Obvious were to read this he would probably say “wow, she has great genetics”. Two units of semen are available with this heifer for future production. Pasture exposed to RFI Red Wave 776F, ASA #3483203 from 4/1/19 to 9/1/19.

She is a phenotypically flawless female that combines depth of rib and feminine lines as good as any. She is smooth on the profile and her red blazed face appeance is very eye appealing. Ambition is a Satisfies x Diva son who has done a great job for us. We have been using him quite a bit heavier during the drought to keep our cows bred and having babies. Take a look at this group of females they have a lot to offer, including some of the breeds top genetics. His heifers were some of the highest ranking females in the RGV Development Test. We have been holding back many of his past progeny to build our genetic base, but with the drought continuing we decided to sell this group of females. These females will be having their first calves, so you can look forward to many more years of production out of them. These females also had excellent pelvic scores, which means calving ease. Lots 157-161 are Ambition daughters and remember what Potential adds to this equation as well, Possibilities x Ciao Bella. We would be happy to get you more information from the RGV Heifer Development test if needed on any of our bred heifers in this year’s sale.

NIESCHWIETZ POWERMAN 6B

Powerman is a Nu Wave II x Oprah son that we have been using a lot since his first calves hit the ground. He does just what his name implies; he puts bone, raw power and performance into his offspring and boy do they make great females and bulls. Take a close look at this group of females and tell me you do see mama cows. Who wouldn’t like to have a pasture full? Then when you add the genetic power in these matings, what a bonus for the new owners of these females. We had 10 heifers gaining over 3 lbs/day, with our Powerman females leading the charge with four. There was only one animal which did not belong to 7N get over the 3 lb/ day threshold in the heifers tested this year. There were also four females who were just under 3lbs/day. Lots 162-168 are out of Powerman, a Nu Wave II x Oprah and they are bred to Potential. We would be happy to get you more information from the RGV heifer development test if needed on any of our bred heifers in this year’s sale.

SMITH POSSIBILITIES

As you can see by our offering, we have really highlighted our Possibilities bred cattle. We are impressed with the way the cattle look, the way they perform, and the genetics they add. I mean Steel Force and Ciao Bella, enough said. The Reavis’ campaigned a son who was Reserve Champion Simbrah at the RGV Livestock Show this year, the Butler family has a daughter who you will see out on the junior circuit this year and our Potential bull who is the service sire to our bred heifers in the sale was at the top of his class at this year’s RGVBIA Bull Test. Take a close look at these cattle, there won’t be many more of them, since we lost Possibilities earlier in the year. These cattle all were being prepped for the sale long before we knew about the loss, which was too late for us to change lots. These daughters have curb appeal, and solid numbers to back them up.
