Attention Juniors - Rule Changes! • Juniors running for the AJSA Junior Board must be at least 17 and no older than 20 as of January 1, 2018. Junior Board members will be allowed to finish out their term even if they age out of showing. The AJSA junior board application can be found at juniorshorthorn.com. Junior Board candidates are required to attend Youth Conference I, II and III as well as a junior board interview. Email shelby@shorthorn.org for any questions about running for the junior board. • Junior members turning 22 in 2018, your Junior membership is good through Dec. 31, 2018. To receive adult membership at a transitional rate, you must complete the application on the back of the expiring junior member letter mailed out in November and return it along with payment to the ASA office by March 1,2019. All memberships converted from junior to adult will become WHR breeders. You are eligible to show at the Junior National in 2018 if you turn 22 prior to July 1, 2018. • The age requirement for Junior Nationals has changed! Junior members 7 years of age are now eligible to show at the Junior National. The Junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child turned 7 on December 31, 2017 they are eligible to show at the 2018 National Junior Show in Madison, Wisconsin. If they turned 7 on January 10, 2018, they are not eligible to show at this years Junior National.

Sire qualifications; along with their results. You can also download this list as an excel spreadsheet. For a bull to become non-certificate, ALL DNA requirements for an A.I. Sire must be completed.

WHR Assessments for 2018 were mailed in November. If you have not received yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2018 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2018.) 2. e are looking forward to spring more than ever this year. Much of the country is experiencing some form of extreme weather conditions effecting farmers and ranchers. We are ready for baby calves to be born as nature takes over during this special time of the year. Everyone is calving or planting or finishing up calving and working to get cattle bred back. Regardless, it is a busy time for membership and ASA Staff planning activities for the remainder of the year. I urge you to take time out on rainy days or in the evening to get your calf crop registered. If you are a WHR Breeder, once your assessments are completed, there are no additional costs to register all your natural calves. This will be a huge help to you later, to have this behind you and to have EPDs and the other information you need to be ready for sales and/or entering shows. If you don’t have your registrations completed, these deadlines can creep up on you. By registering all the calves as soon as possible, you will be ready. I also encourage you to take DNA samples on each and every calf as you go through them to give them their first vaccinations. This way you will have the DNA if you need it later and it will be much easier to get these results for required statuses or sale information. This will also provide better information for more accurate performance data with genomics, specially for Stayability and the new Bolt System. This time of year while calving this year’s babies, many of you are already planning and breeding for January 2019 calves. I really wish we had the new EPDs from the Bolt software as you are making these decisions. Going live with this information is closer all the time and should be coming very, very soon. Check Page 12 for more information. Plans for this year’s Junior National & Youth Conference are coming along. We are planning a big celebration for this year’s event to mark the 50th anniversary of this major Shorthorn event. Be sure to check out Pages 14 and throughout this issue for more information. Remember, entries are due by May 1 and are only accepted online through the Junior website. This is the largest event we hold each year with the host state’s help. Make plans to be in Madison, WI the last week of June. We are planning a combined celebration for all past Junior Board members during the 2018 Junior National and Youth Conference. This year will be bigger and better in every way. Plans are developing for a National Shorthorn Sire Test Field Day in August at the University of Illinois to view the 150 plus animals on feed sired by Shorthorn bulls that are part of the Illinois Sire Test. All the resulting calves from this set of sires are being fed out on electronic feed gates to measure feed efficiency. This will be a great opportunity to see these individuals and learn about this test and how feed efficiency can make a difference in yours and your customer’s bottom line. To see more information on this Sire Test Field Day, check out pages 32. Also, I would like to invite everyone to the Annual Meeting Forum & Awards Banquet in Kansas City on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 this year. We are planning a great program with some new direction for niche markets and looking at how Shorthorn fits into the beef market. This will be an educational event you will not want to miss, plus have time to visit with fellow Shorthorn breeders. This has become a major event for the breed that brings our membership and breeders together with new ideas, education and great Shorthorn fellowship. There is a lot going on in the breed so please plan ahead and try to attend these events. I feel these events will add to your operation and give you information that will “Make the Shorthorn Breed Better”! =

Single-Step EPDs: Sounding Like a Broken Record Have you ever been pulling out of your driveway, headed to church or to dinner, only to notice just before you leave that your cows are out? Well, our cows have gotten out again on our way to finalizing the single-step genetic evaluation using the new BOLT software. When the IGS team noticed an issue with the data submission systems in another breed, it had an effect on all of us that are members of the group. Now they are working on fixing the issues, and would like to do some test runs before releasing the information live to the breeders. Ideally, they would like to have four weekly test runs without errors in able to go live. Doing so will give IGS better opportunities to find and fix issues before releasing the improved run. It’s more important to the IGS team to get it done correctly than to just get it done. Their diligence to bringing us the best genetic evaluation in the industry should certainly be commended, even if we have to be patient a while longer. With new technology comes a learning curve, and for many, myself included, repetition is necessary to grasp the major concepts. Since there are some new changes with the transition to the singlestep multi-breed genetic evaluation, we will discuss some of those a little further to drive home the significance. With the move to the new single-step genetic evaluation, it has been noted the accuracy values you will see in the

registry will be lower than values from the previous EPD runs. That certainly sounds confusing, but there is a method to the madness. When EPD calculations first began, there simply wasn’t enough computer power available to do the tabulations necessary to come up with the true accuracy of an EPD. Instead, the scientists of the day used a technique called the approximation method to come up with as good of a prediction of accuracy as the technology of the day could compute. Geneticists realized that while these approximations of accuracy were the best they could do at the time, they were probably a bit overinflated compared to the “true” accuracy of an EPD. Thanks to technology advancements, we are now able to process the tabulations that produce the truer accuracy value that wasn’t possible before. It will take some time to wrap our heads around bulls that were once listed at a 0.90 accuracy might now be closer to a 0.65, but remember that the newer, lower number is a better representation of the accuracy value. It’s like your neighbor’s fishing stories: If he told you he caught a 15 pounder (old method of accuracy calculation), in reality he probably caught a 10 or 12 pound fish (new single-step accuracy method)! A neat feature of the new singlestep genetic evaluation is how genomic data is handled during the calculations. We have already covered how the new

system eliminates a step in the current process of calculating genomicallyenhanced EPDs. What’s interesting is that with the new system, not only does genomic data affect the animal that has been genomically tested, but also related animals. If you have genomically tested your herd bull, then the information gathered from his genotype has an effect on his offspring’s EPDs, as well as half and full siblings and other closely related animals. That does not mean that just having DNA on your herd bulls is a good substitution for genotyping your replacement females or sale bulls. Obviously, having information on an animal’s own genomic profile will be more valuable than just having the sire DNA tested. After all, Dad’s genetics are only half the story! Testing the offspring gives you the full genomic story. The transition to single-step genetic evaluation by the members of IGS will open up doors that previous genetic evaluation technology could have never unlocked. On the surface, the presentation of EPDs in DigitalBeef will look like things never changed. It’s the science and technology behind the EPD runs that will create the differences. Like rebuilding the engine in your car, the power “under the hood” will lead to a better driving experience, or in this case, a better genetic evaluation and decisionmaking tools for Shorthorn breeders and = their customers.

We have a fantastic group of Wisconsin Shorthorn Association members helping with the planning and the junior board is pumped up for the circus themed junior national. The

Farewell Alan F. Simon, of Rockford, Ohio, died unexpectedly at Joint Township Hospital in St. Mary’s Ohio, on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Alan was born on November 21, 1943, in Van Wert, the son of William and Gladys (Krugh) Simon. He graduated from Ohio City High School then served with the Air National Guard. He was co-owner, with his son Walt, of Simon Farms—raising crops and prize cattle. He was a member of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association and showed Shorthorn cattle across the U.S., earning multiple Grand Champion titles with his stock. He had a passion for raising and breeding cattle, which he had done his entire life. He also loved Antique Tractors, which together with his son, Walt, he restored. He loved tearing them apart and putting them back to their original look. He was an avid

camper for 20 years, and he enjoyed his coffee and donuts with the gang at T.J.’s, where together they solved many of the world’s problems! Alan will be lovingly remembered by his wife of thirty years, Chris Simon. In addition, he will be remembered by his son, Walter P. (Stephanie Wilson) Simon of Rockford; three daughters: Jenifer (Stephen) Smith of Celina; Andrea Simon of Orlando, Fla., and Judie Cochiolo of Virginia Beach, Va. He is also survived by two step-daughters: Michele Snyder of Los Alamos, NM, and Tiffany Grimm of Celina, Ohio, 4 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, along with 2 great-grandchildren. Surviving are a brother John (Leslie) Simon of Ohio City, Ohio and a sister, Linda Shupe of Van Wert; deceased is a brother-in-law, David Shupe. =

Picking Up Where You Left Off Many breeders are skeptical of using Digital Beef for the fear of losing their work. I am here to tell you, “Fret Not!” because there is a way of saving your work- and a way to get back to the exact spot you had previously left off at. I might tend to get repetitive with this, but do not use Internet Explorer! Using Internet Explorer could end up with my next advice becoming null and void. That said, also make sure that you are always clicking “Validate” when you are done filling out the birth data on calves. This is essentially our “save” button. Now that we are on the same page, let’s say you have entered the information on your calf but get the error “No AI certificate found on sire record”. This is an error that has the potential to be resolved within the day, but it could also take a few weeks to get a certificate on certain bulls. I have great news. You have already done what you needed to do to save your work by clicking “Validate”. Now, let’s jump ahead to say, one week later when the AI certificate is in your account. Once you have logged back into your account, you’ll want to make sure that you are on your General Profile

= Junior Corner Attending Junior Nationals? View the EDGE Newsletter Online It is never to early to start planning for the National Junior Shorthorn and Youth Conference! This year the NJSS will be held in Madison, Wisc., June 26 to July 1. The ownership deadline is May 1, which is quickly approaching. While you may still be searching for cattle, you can start working on all the other great contest opportunities to participate in throughout the week. The contests vary from ones that require some work to be done before you arrive at Junior Nationals and some contests you complete and compete in during the week. This year we are excited to add a contest that we have had in the past, the Cattleman’s Quiz! This contest will be held on Wednesday June 27th at 11:30 a.m. (tentative schedule). The rules and instructions for the Cattleman’s Quiz are posted in the EDGE newsletter. There have been many other changes throughout the week that are listed in the EDGE

newsletter as well. Another new thing that the states can look forward to is the “Street Carnival”. This is a state contest that goes towards state points for Outstanding State. This will be held on Friday, June 29th starting at 5:30 p.m. (tentative schedule). The rules and instructions for this can be found in the EDGE newsletter. Another big exciting change coming this year is Senior Showmanship Finals! We are looking forward to bringing more spotlight to this contest this year. 2017 ASA/University of Illinois Sire Test Report Early results are in from the 2017 ASA Sire Test with the University of Illinois, and Shorthorn genetics look to be proving their mettle in a realworld commercial setting. Even though they are heavily involved in cow-calf research, the University of Illinois runs their cow herd as close to a no-nonsense commercial operation as you will find in any university system. It’s a great opportunity to work with cattle that are forced to work in tight breeding seasons, have quality udders, and maintain themselves while raising a calf on minimal supplementation. A special thanks to the breeders who participated in the 2017 Sire Test. Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to gather this valuable information that will help move the Shorthorn breed towards our goals of growing commercial acceptance

for our cattle. From September 8- October 4, 151 Shorthorn-sired calves were born, with 91% of the calves born in the 17 day window from September 13- September 30. Using UI’s SimAngus cow herd resulted in 123 black-hided calves, 15 black calves with white markings/blue roans, and 13 red hided calves. These calves were raised without creep feed until weaning on February 14, 2018. After some time to precondition the cattle, they will be shipped to the UI Farm near the university campus this month, where they will go on feed. Data collection in this phase of the trial will include gain, feed efficiency, and eventually carcass data. Initial reports indicate that these weights stack up comparably to other calves within the UI herd, showcasing the value of Shorthorns as the British

breed crossbreeding solution. Keep in mind that it can be difficult to draw any conclusions comparing groups of extremely small size. Having only 1 or 2 calves may not be a fair representation of a sire’s genetic capabilities. Unfortunately, nature didn’t bless us with perfect distribution of steer and heifer calves across all sires. Weaning weight data listed is adjusted to a 205 day weaning weight. All data has been uploaded to Digital Beef. We are working with UI to plan a field day in August. This will include a chance to see the cattle on feed, as well as educational presentations and fellowship with other Shorthorn breeders. Be sure to look for more information on this event in future issues of the Shorthorn Country. =

As Shorthorn breeders know, the uniqueness of a kilt is not the norm amongst breed queens. Admittedly, it is not the most modern outfit, nor is it the most convenient, but the history behind it and the sisterhood that comes with is second to none. The Board unanimously approved the revised judges list presented for 20182019 shows.

The Board unanimously approved acceptance of the 5-five year Digital Beef contract renewal, beginning Feb. 2018.

President Mark Gordon called the meeting to order Nov. 30, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.

The Board unanimously approved legal counsel to write a policy describing how performance data is handled regarding clones in Digital Beef.

Present: President Mark Gordon, Vice-President James Freed, Ed Kruse, Robert Alden, Tom Turner, Nancy Grathwohl Heter, Marty Loving, Hugh Mooney, Rick Leone and Executive Secretary Montie Soules.

A. The ASA Board unanimously approved that any performance data turned in on a clone will be applied to the host animal as of the conversion to Digital Beef software used for the registry, therefore the host and clones from the host would have the same EPD profile.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were reviewed and discussed. The Sept. 26-27, 2017 Board Meeting Minutes were unanimously approved. Rochelle Wilson and Montie Soules presented financial reports for Oct. 2017. The Board unanimously approved the financial report. The audit for fiscal year Sept. 1, 2016 - Aug. 31, 2017 was presented and approved unanimously.
