Non-Certificate Bulls To make a bull non-certificate, ALL DNA requirements for an A.I. Sire must be completed before we will make them non-certificate.

A.I. Certificate Bulls As of January 1, 2017, any bull releasing its first A.I certificate, will not be able to until ALL DNA is completed.

Transferring Bred Females Bred females being transferred must have all the breeding information including name and registration number of sire(s), type of service, date of service and/or pasture exposure dates.

Contemporary Groups

If you enter your calf crop into the registry in several different sessions, you must indicate which contemporary group each calf belongs to. To do this, use management codes (the “Mgmt” box) and the “Season” drop down menu when submitting calves to the registry. All calves in a contemporary group must have the same management code and same season submitted in order to be properly grouped together. If these are not used, the registry will group calves by the day they are submitted.

WHR Breeders 1. WHR Breeders cannot register any calves until their cow herd inventory assessment is completed and paid in full for that calendar year. 2. To take advantage of the free registration benefit of being a WHR Breeder, you must register your natural calf before it turns one (1) year of age. Reminder to all WHR breeders: 2017 WHR Assessments need to be completed before any 2017 calves can be registered. Be sure to keep an eye on your inventory throughout the year if you are buying bred females; some might come from TOC breeders or breeders who haven’t completed the assessment. You will be able to assess newly added females for the same price you paid initially, just contact us and we can adjust the price. *This includes foundation females as well as females enrolled from other breeds **Once the balance is paid for the assessment you can re-validate your work and then commit to registry. ***To access your unassessed females: Herd Mgmt->Inventory->Assessment Age

e just finished up the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is the breed’s largest event of the year. Families from all over the country came together with a common passion for the Shorthorn Breed. This year the theme was “Taking Flight with Red, Roan and White” and boy did the youth of our breed take flight for this week of fun, education and excitement! From the Opening Ceremonies to the selection of the last Champion, it was a great week for Shorthorns. Yes, many focus on the cattle show and thanks to those individuals the quality of animals exhibited was one of the better sets of cattle we have had at a Junior National. I personally would like to congratulate the exhibitors of the Bred & Owned cattle. The Bred & Owned Purebred champion drive would easily compare to Louisville or Denver most any year. This was an awesome example of the job members of our breed are doing with our youth. This is not to take away from the ShorthornPlus or Owned Purebred show. The animals displayed the results of focusing on the Breed Initiatives to produce better cattle with performance data (listed on the lower left of this page). I also want to give credit to all the youth exhibitors who participated in the other contests that are a huge part of this event. Contests such as Speech, Quiz Bowl, Poster, Arts & Crafts, Beef Cook-off, Judging and many more help shape our young people for the future. Shorthorn has one of the highest participation percentages in non-showing activities (without being required) as any breed in the beef industry. With just shy of 500 head exhibited and over 340 exhibitors this event is one of the most important of our breed. Thank you to everyone who sponsored this event and to all our members and staff who continue to guarantee its success. Many families who exhibited at the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference will return to their home states and display our breed at county fairs and state fairs across America. This activity each summer is very important. It is a great opportunity to expose Shorthorn cattle to many in our industry who may not see them otherwise. The need for high quality Shorthorn cattle with performance data displayed throughout the USA is an essential part of growing the breed and achieving more breed acceptance. The month of August is important for membership. Each member in good standing as of August 1, will receive a state delegate election ballot for the annual meeting. If you are a member in good standing, watch for your election ballot and be sure it is returned to the ASA office in Kansas City by the Tuesday after Labor Day (Sept. 5). This is an opportunity to have your input in the ASA. Also, our fiscal year ends August 31. Reminder – Have all your registrations completed and in the registry by the end of August to be included as Century Club members and the year-end statistics. Make plans to attend the Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet, December 1st and 2nd in Kansas City! =

Beef Improvement Federation Convention Recap Earlier this summer, Montie and I made our way to one of the premier events of the year: the Beef Improvement Federation Convention. Hosted in Athens, GA by the University of Georgia Animal Science and Extension staff, BIF Convention is a highlight for many involved in the beef cattle business. As a Southerner, it was nice to enjoy a couple days of Southern hospitality, sweet tea, and high humidity. BIF Convention is a unique event, as people from across the industry converge for three days of education and networking. BIF Convention kicked off on May 31 with the Young Producers Symposium, an afternoon program designed for upcoming industry leaders. I attended the Young Producers Symposium, and it’s refreshing to see a room full of my peers excited about making a career in this great business. With speakers discussing financial planning, agricultural advocacy, and how to build a cattle operation from the ground up, there was a lot to be learned from experienced professionals

who are willing to share their wisdom to benefit tomorrow’s leaders. If you are looking for an educational event to attend, BIF needs to be on your calendar. This year’s presentations covered genomic technology, selection indices, heterosis, heifer development, research projects, and previews of upcoming technology. If there is something within the realm of genetic improvement that interests you, someone will cover the topic at BIF. Utilizing DNA genotyping was a hot topic of discussion. One speaker compared genotyping to having a credit card. If you’re only using DNA genotype information, it’s like using your credit card without having the money to pay the bill. Collecting both DNA information and phenotype records (performance data) is having your credit card, but also the money in the bank to make your payments. As great as DNA technology is, it’s still vital to be collecting performance data! While the learning opportunities in the meeting rooms are second to none,

Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs

my favorite part of attending BIF is the “hallway education”. With so many industry leaders in one place, there is a so much knowledge shared outside the meeting rooms. It’s a great time to reconnect with old friends and establish new contacts. You never know what great idea might come out of the halls of BIF Convention. It’s exciting to return home from BIF with a bright outlook. There will always be challenges, but the strong pool of industry leadership displayed at BIF will keep us moving forward. Thanks to the educational sessions and hallway chats, I left Athens confident that the Shorthorn breed is in a good position to move forward in the industry. You will certainly see the influence of this trip as we plan future Shorthorn events. Next year, BIF Convention will be held June 20-23 in Loveland, CO, hosted by Colorado State University. If you have never been to BIF, I encourage you to mark those dates on your calendar and book your travel arrangements soon! =

Thank You

Kathleen!

March 10, 2017 was a momentous occasion for Kathleen Aschoff; it was the day Ethan Gilman asked for her hand in marriage and she said yes! With the acceptance of the proposal comes change, which will be relocating from Kansas City and a new job. Kat came to the ASA in July of 2015. From day one, she put the members first. If you have ever called into the office

you have likely spoken with Kat and experienced first-hand her commitment and enthusiasm for the breed. She started out doing registrations and customer service. Kat was an important part of helping with the transition to the new Digital Beef registry. In November of 2015, she was the only ASA employee that made the move from Omaha to Kansas City. At this time, her dedication

Announcing the

Complete Dispersal of our Shorthorn Herd.

We knew this day would come when our age and health would require a simpler life. We have loved our Shorthorn cows and will miss the excitement that each new calving season brings. It’s been great fun with so many great people who share our love for this breed. Thanks all for the knowledge, friendship and laughter over the years.

to the breed and its’ members excelled. She was a key component to helping get the show system striving and coordinating everything that came with that. Long work hours and traveling around the country representing the breed at various shows or field days was never a concern to her, because she loved her job and the people. If you have shown at one of the super-regional, regional, or national shows, Kat probably checked you in, solved any problems and wished you good luck. With the show planning and preparing, she also took on another role of taking care of the DNA that came through the office. “Kathleen has been an asset to the ASA staff. Her continued dedication to membership and desire to service breeders has been exceptional and was a fine example for others to follow” says Montie. Bottom line, Kat’s time at the American Shorthorn Association has been one we are extremely grateful for and will be missed. We are excited for Kat to begin the next chapter of her life, and beyond happy that the man she is marrying is a Shorthorn breeder, as this gives us more opportunity to continue to keep in touch. It was a pleasure working with Kat. We would like to thank her for all of her hard work and wish her continued success in her new endeavors.

2017 Shorthorn Junior Nationals by : Zach Fanning

Shorthorns landed in Tulsa last month for the 2017 Shorthorn Junior Nationals. Events were kicked off on opening ceremonies night where we got to experience some of Oklahoma’s culture with a performance by a group of Native Americans who performed their tribe’s ritual dances. From the very first contest of livestock judging to the last of team fitting, the Shorthorn juniors gave their all and tried to be one of the top

On Friday, July 7, junior exhibitors and parents crowded together in their lawn chairs and in the stands in the Pavilion at the Tulsa State Fair Grounds to witness the award ceremony to recognize the juniors for their hard work in the and out of the barn. These students were also recognized for the involvement and academic achievements. With the plentiful generosity from the American Shorthorn Foundation and the thoughtful families listed below, 14 deserving juniors left the award ceremony with funding to help pay for their school. All those who received the scholarships are known as “Builders of the Breed,” an honor granted to members of the Shorthorn breed. Every year a selection committee carefully examine each application and makes tough decisions to select the best recipients. Jared and Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship: The $1,000 Jared & Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the Bedwell family of Isabella, Okla., in partnership with the American Shorthorn Foundation and was awarded to a high school senior, college freshmen or college sophomore based on the applicants involvement, future goals and career plans in agriculture, GPA and character references. The scholarship was created to help honor the Bedwell boys who were both active AJSA members. This year’s recipient was Macy Bakenhus. Bakenhus is the 19-year-old daughter

before she was able to compete. “My most rewarding achievement in the Shorthorn breed is that my family has worked hard to accomplish our goals,” Fogg said. “Our herd is small, but we have worked to grow our genetics to be reputable in and out of the show ring.” Jesse M. and Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship: The $1,000 Jesse M. & Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the American Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon the applicants’ involvement in Agriculture, educational background, ACT scores and high school and/or college GPA. He served in the Nebraska and Iowa Shorthorn Association holding positions in each. In the early 80’s he was elected to the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. In his history of being a manager, herd consultant and order buyer, Dugdale attended hundreds of Shorthorn sales though out North America and Canada while purchasing untold numbers of Shorthorn cattle. We had approximately 40 young girls, ages 4-12 participate in making their own princess sashes, decorating tea cups and wearing crowns while drinking tea (pink lemonade) and eating cookies. There were also Queen and Princess Representatives from Arkansas,

Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin. One thing is for sure, the future of the Shorthorn Lassies is very bright! Later in the day, a Lassie Social was also held for all current State Lassies and Princesses, and anyone interested in becoming a Shorthorn Lassie. It was a great time to share our love of

the Shorthorn breed and learn the basics of being a Lassie Queen and the responsibilities involved. I shared my experiences and answered questions. I would like to thank all of the people who attended these events and assisted to make them such a success. It has been an honor serving as your National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. =

The Mentor/Apprentice program, sponsored by Fusion Cattle Company allows for a senior or intermediate to mentor a prospector throughout the week. There are several fun activities that the Mentor and the Apprentice

participated in throughout the week. Activities included getting to know their partner, practicing judging skills, meeting new people through a scavenger hunt and selling airplanes for a throwing contest to help fund next year’s Junior Nationals. This year’s juniors who sold the most Airplanes and raised the most money for the American Junior Shorthorn Association were Lexi Wetzel

The juniors participating in the Arts and Crafts contest created original pieces inspired by Shorthorn cattle. The items were then evaluated by a panel of judges and placed appropriately. A special thank you goes to the members who donated their original pieces to future fundraisers for the AJSA. Your contribution driven by your passion for the breed is greatly appreciated.

Herdsmanship Winners The 2017 Junior National Herdsmanship contest was a success. This contest is to see what state can put together the best stalls, and how well each state keeps their area clean and well presented throughout the week. Many

states put up curtains behind their stall signs, as well as put up state signs on the end of the alleys and display boards showing off their juniors. It is up to the juniors of each state to keep their alleys swept clean and stall beds presentable.

All of our juniors take a lot of pride in their work and it was a very competitive contest this year! Congratulations to all of the states on a job well done! =

This year’s National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference was my first one as the director of youth activities. I may have been a little nervous and scared, but I had many people on my side to make sure it was successful! We were lucky enough to get nice weather in Tulsa throughout the week which made it a lot more comfortable for every one there. I think this year was very successful with the show ring decorations, facility,

awards, opening ceremony and so much more. Congratulations to all the exhibitors and participants on your achievements at junior national this year. There was so many great projects and cattle that really made the Shorthorn breed stand out. Thank you to all the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association members and other volunteers who helped make everything run smoothly during the week. Thanks to the ASA staff and interns who as-

sisted in the behind the scenes work during the week to make everything be on time. It may have been a week without much sleep, lack of meals, and some stress, but I loved every minute of being youth activities director. I am already starting to plan for next year and can’t wait to see what the week in Madison, Wisc., will hold for the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference! =
