WHR breeders, beginning January 1, 2019, calves cannot be registered if the dam was not assessed in the year the calf was born. Unassessed dams from the previous year will be deemed as inactive and charged a re-enrollment fee of $25 each, in addition to the assessment fee. A.I. Certificates In order to have A.I. certificates released on a bull, it must be DNA tested as an A.I. Sire. However, if the bull is deceased, the calf can be DNA tested instead.

WHR Breeders 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2018 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2018.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) ust arrived at the office in Kansas City from the 2018 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference in Madison, WI. Boy, what an event! It made me proud to be part of this extravaganza and to see the fraternity in this “Family Friendly Breed”. The excitement from arrival to conclusion is like nothing else we will experience in the livestock industry. Over 517 head of cattle were exhibited by more than 360 exhibitors. The quality of the junior exhibitors and cattle continue to be Showmanship Ring 1 most impressive. Judges made positive comments on both junior Website Views: 406 - Unique Views: 265 - Facebook Views: 673 members and the cattle from Showmanship through the purebred Owned Show on Sunday. There are some numbers behind the Showmanship Ring 2 scenes that show the tremendous support we have for the Website Views: 440 - Unique Views: 292 - Facebook Views: 627 Shorthorn breed. Walton Webcasting aired the showmanship live on Thursday and the cattle shows live on Saturday and Sunday Showmanship Senior Finals Website Views: 359 - Unique Views: 192 - Facebook Views: 612 with over 16,000 views watching the show online. Check out the actual numbers to the left for detail of views online. This is a tremendous number of folks interested in Shorthorns. This event happens because a large number of people and Junior Board members are working in “National Shorthorn Sire Test Field Day” sync toward the same goals. The most important folks, though, are the families and junior exhibitors who come and spend the Aug. 25, 2018 week making this one of the great Junior Nationals and family University of Illinois, Champaign, IL experiences anyone could have. Join Us for the National Shorthorn Sire Test Field Day After a week in Wisconsin for the National Junior Shorthorn Show, I hit the road from Madison to Urbana, IL to tour the University of Illinois Beef Farm in preparation for the upcoming National Shorthorn Sire Test Field Day. The Field Day is to be held August 25 on the University of Illinois campus and will include a morning of educational presentations, lunch, and wrap up in the early afternoon with a tour of the Beef Farm, highlighted by seeing the ASA Sire Test calves on feed. I was able to see the cattle on July 2, and thanks to UI graduate students Parker Henley and Jack Oattes, was able to get some new information on the performance of these calves. The set up at the UI Beef Farm is quite unique. All cattle are being fed under roof on slatted concrete with matted floors for cushion and comfort of the cattle. When the calves came into the barn after weaning, they were separated by sex and weight. There are five pens each for heifers and steers, with 12-16 head per pen. Each pen is equipped with 2 GrowSafe feed bunks, as well as a GrowSafe water intake system. Each pen has several sires

represented. The cattle were weighed on June 19. The heifer calves averaged 733 lb, while their steer mates averaged 792 lb. Even during the early summer months, gains have been strong, with some calves averaging over 4 lb/day since going onto the feed trial. Currently, the plan is to go to harvest with these cattle in early November. The calves have developed really nicely since weaning. I was impressed with the growth of the set since they came to campus, as well as the condition they are in and their ability to all shed their winter coats. They are a high-quality set of Shorthorn feeder calves that demonstrate what Shorthorn genetics are capable of doing in a real-world setting. I am pumped to continue collecting data on these cattle, including GrowSafe intake data and carcass data in the near future. We will start the morning in the Animal Sciences Laboratory Room 131 on campus (1207 W Gregory Dr. Urbana, IL 61801) before heading to the Beef Farm after lunch (4900 S Race St.). The morning program we have put together is full of speakers that will be

both interesting and informative. Dr. Dan Shike and Dr. Josh McCann from the UI Animal Science department will be joining us on the program. Dr. Shike will present more information about the Sire Test, while Dr. McCann will discuss some of the research being conducted at the university and its relevance to producers. UI Extension Educator Travis Meteer will be speaking on early weaning strategies. To round out the slate of speakers, I will discuss how programs like the ASA Sire Test can help us continue to improve the Shorthorn breed. I hope you are able to join us on Saturday August 25 for the National Shorthorn Sire Test Field Day. I think you will be impressed with the quality of the educational program, as well as the facilities and the cattle at the UI Beef Farm. Dr. Shike and all the others at the University of Illinois have been very accommodating and enjoyable to work with on this project. Juniors of the Shorthorn breed from across America and one junior from Australia, made their way to Madison, Wisconsin, to participate in the 50th National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference. An entertaining hypnotist welcomed all the juniors â&#x20AC;&#x153;Under the Big Topâ&#x20AC;? and left exhibitors in a daze, and excited for the upcoming weeks activities. Juniors put their skills

to the test by participating in several contests. Whether they decided to take part in livestock judging, showmanship, cook off, speech, or quiz bowl they gave each contest their all. Mentor/Apprentice. The Golden Comb. Junior Nationals is the highlight of many junior members’ summer, but for younger members, it can seem intimidating. The Mentor/Apprentice program is sponsored by Fusion Cattle Company and was created to help make younger members feel comfortable throughout the week. Prospector members, aged five to nine, have the opportunity to be paired with

an older mentor during week. The pairs participate in several fun learning activities throughout the week that allow each of them to get to know one another, practice their livestock judging skills and meet new friends. Pairs are also tasked with selling fun hats as a fundraiser for next year’s junior nationals. This year, there was a tie between the pairs that raised the most money by selling the most

hats. Bradyn Powell and Logan Test, and Charlie Sutherland and Keegan Bennett came out on top for the high sellers. Following the end of the week, each member who completed the program was entered in a drawing to receive the coveted Golden Comb award. This year’s recipients of the Golden Comb award were - Aidan Raab and Wyatt Osborn.

Red Coat Award. Each year, the Junior Board selects a Prospector to win this highest award. This award goes to a junior member who is just starting their junior career and has gone above and beyond by participating 38

in contests and being actively involved. This year’s Red Coat Award goes to Kolten Greenhorn. His willingness to participate in everything and his passion for this breed rose to the top. You may

see that he also placed in the Top 5 in many different contests, as well as being the High Point in his age division, and he had a fantastic week in and out of the show ring! Congratulations Kolten! =

Team Sales by Jake Nikkel

Team Sales Winners. Being able to walk in front of a group of people and sell a product provides juniors with real world skills. PI and PII put their salesmanship skills to the test by selling a calf to a set of judges. Zoetis products were sold by the Intermediate division to a group of judges. Seniors were provided with EPDs, a copy of registration papers and pictures of bulls and heifers to select an animal which best fits a given scenario. They then presented their choice to a panel of judges. The judges asked many questions to challenge exhibitors, which helped sort one team to the top. The results are as follows:

Herdsmanship Winners. The Herdsmanship contest is to see what state association can put together the best stalls, and how well each state keeps their area clean and well-presented throughout the week. Many states put up curtains, as well as put up state signs on the end of the alleys and display boards showing off their juniors and their animals. They work hard to make sure their area is well presented. It is up to the juniors of each state to keep their alleys swept clean and stall beds presentable.

Thursday morning exhibitors put their countless hours of hard work spent with their animal to the test in the Sullivan Supply Showmanship contest. Exhibitors were selected based on their preparation and presentation of their animal. Seniors and Prospectors I were judged by Bob May, Mineral Point, Wisconsin, and Calli Bayer, Ringle, Wisc., evaluated Intermediates and Prospector II. American Shorthorn Foundation Scholarship Recipients by Anna Miller

American Shorthorn Foundation Scholarship Recipients Each year, there are several scholarships sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation and the American Shorthorn Association available to American Junior Shorthorn Association members. The ASA and the Foundation believe offering college support to the youth of the association is important as they are the future of the industry and the Shorthorn breed. This year, 11 deserving junior members were awarded collegiate financial support from the generosity of the Foundation and the families listed below. Jared and Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship: The $1,000 Jared & Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the Bedwell Family of Isabella, Okla., in partnership with the American Shorthorn Foundation. The scholarship was awarded to a high school senior, college freshman or sophomore based on the applicant’s involvement, future goals and career plans in agriculture, GPA, and character references. The scholarship was created to help honor the Bedwell boys who were both active AJSA members. This year’s recipient was Kane Aegerter. Aegerter is the 19-year-old son of Jeff and Darla Aegerter from Seward, Neb. He is currently attending Oklahoma State University and majoring in animal science with a business option. Aegerter plans to become a future advocate for the livestock and agricultural industries in the Midwest, and stay involved with the Shorthorn breed. “My interests are definitely in sales 44

and marketing,” Aegerter said. “So, I am concentrating my major with an emphasis on business to prepare me for the opportunity to become involved in sales management down the road.” Lyle and Katharyn Dewitt Memorial Scholarship: The $1,000 Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Lyle and Katharyn DeWitt and their contributions to the Shorthorn breed. This scholarship is sponsored by the American Shorthorn Foundation and was awarded to a high school senior or college freshman based upon Shorthorn involvement, grades, need and participation in other activities outside the barn. This year’s recipient was Gabriella Leone. Leone is the 19-year-old daughter of Rick and Trish Leone from Fowler, Colo. She will be attending Kansas State University to major in animal science and industry with a minor in feed nutrition. Leone plans to stay involved in the cattle industry and hopes to work within a cattle association. “I hope to grow in the livestock industry and find my place to help the industry grow in genetic improvement for a breed association,” Leone said. Jesse M. and Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship: The $1,000 Jesse M. & Jennie S. Duckett Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the American Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon the applicants’ involvement in Agriculture, educational background, ACT scores and high school and/or

college GPA. This year’s recipient was Evan Wolfe. Wolfe is the 17-year-old son of Mike and Liz Wolfe of Herald, Calif. He will be attending the L-R: Jim Freed; Jennifer University of Bedwell; Diane Bedwell; Nebraska, Lincoln, Kane Aegerter and Jeff and plans to major Bedwell. in mechanized s y s t e m s management. Wolfe would like to remain in the agriculture industry as well as continue raising Shorthorn cattle with his brother. “To me, it is so much more than a business,” Wolfe said. “It’s my life and I love every second of it. I am beyond grateful I get to spend so much time doing what I love and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.” Mike Dugdale Memorial Scholarship: In 2006, the Shorthorn breed lost one of its long-time members: Michael Dugdale. Dugdale was involved in the first importation of Irish Shorthorns in the late ’70s and early ’80s. He served in both the Nebraska and Iowa Shorthorn Associations, holding positions in each. In the early ’80s he was elected to the American Shorthorn Association board of directors. In his history of being a manager, herd consultant and order buyer, Dugdale attended hundreds of Shorthorn sales throughout North America while purchasing untold numbers of Shorthorn cattle. The $1,000 Dugdale Scholarship was awarded to a collegiate upperclassman who is an active AJSA member with a sincere interest in bettering the beef cattle industry after college. This year’s recipient was Tejlor Strope. Strope is the 19-year-old daughter of Boyd and MaLaine Strope of O’Neill, Neb. She is currently attending the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and studying agricultural education. Strope plans to become an agricultural educator as well as remain involved in the Shorthorn industry. “My goal is to promote agriculture and rural communities in such a way

that it is a cool, interesting and an important part of a student’s life now and in the future,” Strope said. “The best opportunity for education happens at home. The students I reach will educate their children about the importance of agriculture and rural communities and the opportunities both have to offer.” Charles B. “Chuck” Leemon Memorial Scholarship: The $2,500 Charles B. “Chuck” Leemon Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the family of Chuck Leemon in cooperation with the Shorthorn Foundation. The scholarship is awarded to a college student based upon the applicant’s involvement, future goals and career plans in agriculture, college GPA, and character references. The recipient for this year’s scholarship was Callie Prochaska. Prochaska is 19 years old and from Chickasha, Okla. She is currently attending Oklahoma State University and studying agribusiness. Prochaska plans to work in financing or an agriculturally related business in Oklahoma and also stay involved in the cattle industry. “My goal is to follow in my father’s footsteps and work as a banker within the agricultural industry,” Prochaska said. “It is my belief there is a need in rural America to provide a sustainable and dependable source of financing within the agricultural industry. Don Longley Memorial Scholarship: Don Longley was a past publisher of the Shorthorn World magazine. He followed his father’s footsteps and continued the empire of the Shorthorn magazine, insisting his staff attend every Shorthorn show, sale and conference possible in order to bring Shorthorn breeders the most accurate and expansive information of the time. He worked effortlessly to promote the breed and his greatest delight was to publish a journalistically superior book. The Shorthorn World was never the same after the Longley era, with more than 50 years of father-and-son work towards the magazine and breed. Each year, four $1,000 Longley Memorial Scholarships are awarded. The scholarships are sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon Shorthorn involvement, grades, need, and participation in other activities. Four recipients were selected for this year’s scholarship: Riley Sleichter, Cameron Catrett, Cade Goldsmith and Grace Clark. Riley Sleichter is the 18-year-old son of Jeff and Meredith Sleichter of Abilene, Kan. He is currently attending Kansas State University and studying biological systems engineering. “In the agricultural industry, people care about each other and have passion

for what they do,” Sleichter said. “I could never be thankful enough for growing up in agriculture, and thus far in my life it has taught me hard work, values and a lot about life.” Cameron Catrett is the 18-year-old daughter of Perry and Ashley Catrett of Luverne, Ala. She will be attending Oklahoma State University to study food science with a pre-vet option. Catrett plans to become a veterinarian. “I cannot remember a time in my life that I did not want to be a veterinarian,” Catrett said. “My involvement on the family farm and in other agricultural pursuits over the years has taught me the importance of food safety, disease control and research.” Cade Goldsmith is the 18-year-old son of Bryant and Amy Goldsmith of Brashear, Texas. He will be attending Paris Junior College for welding. Goldsmith plans to become a mobile welder and have his own cattle operation. “My grandfather gave me some great memories in his shop learning basic welding, but he also showed me a love for a field I didn’t know I had,” Goldsmith said. “This also showed me how I hope to spend the rest of my life doing jobs that I really love, as well as working for different ranches and meeting new cattlemen.” Grace Clark is the 19-year-old daughter of Roger and Melissa Clark of Kenney, Ill. She will be attending Illinois State University to study either agricultural communications or agricultural business. Clark would like to advocate within the agricultural industry through journalism. “I would also love nothing more than to remain active within my community, students, and local producers as well,” Clark said. “I truly enjoy being around people, learning from their experiences, and making a difference. If I could combine all of those aspects into a career, that would be a dream come true!” John Miller Scholarship: The $2,500 John Miller Scholarship is awarded to a collegiate upperclassman, including trade schools, who is an active AJSA member with an emphasis to be placed on the recipient having some interest in making Shorthorns more viable in the commercial cattle industry. This year’s recipient is Macy Bakenhus. Bakenhus is the 20-year-old daughter of Ward and Shay Bakenhus of Columbus, Neb. She currently attends the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, to study agricultural education. Bakenhus plans to become an agricultural educator. “My hope is to inspire future generations of agriculturalists to pursue careers in agriculture,” Bakenhus said. “I also plan to keep my herd of cattle and eventually grow its size.” John C. “Jack” Ragsdale

Scholarship: The $1,000 Jack Ragsdale Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior or college freshman who is an active AJSA member with a sincere interest in learning how to evaluate livestock and appreciates the purebred livestock industry. The recipient of this award exemplifies the qualities of Ragsdale, who is also known as “Mr. Shorthorn” by many breeders. Hailing originally from Indiana, he has been active in the Shorthorn business his entire life. Ragsdale was on the Purdue University Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team and was the High Point Individual at the International Livestock Judging Contest in Chicago in 1948, holding the record high score until 1961. After judging, Ragsdale began his servitude at the American Shorthorn Association in 1965, where he began a 12-year term on the Board of Directors, eventually being named president. Ragsdale was instrumental in the inception of the North American International Livestock Exposition and also implemented the first Shorthorn Youth Conference in 1968, which was the start to the American Junior Shorthorn Association. Ragsdale’s portrait is hung in the Purdue University Livestock Hall of Fame in Indiana, and also has been inducted into the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Club. This year’s recipient of the Ragsdale scholarship is Alexis Wetzel. Wetzel is the 19-year-old daughter of Mike and Lisa Wetzel of Faribault, Minn. She is currently attending South Dakota State University and is studying animal science with minors in agriculture business and communication studies. Wetzel plans to find a career within the agricultural industry. “One of my favorite things about Shorthorn production is getting to do it as a family,” Wetzel said. “When one of us excels in the show ring at a show, we are all able to take pride in that achievement knowing each and every one of us played an important role.” Outstanding Junior Board Member: The Outstanding Junior Board Member Scholarship was created to honor a junior board member who has gone above and beyond in their service to the American Junior Shorthorn Association during their time in office. This recipient has been selected to receive this $500 scholarship by the members themselves in acknowledgement of their hard work and determination. This year’s recipient was Zach Fanning of Chestnut, Illinois. Zach is the 22-year-old son of Paul and Lora Fanning. He passed on his red coat at this year’s Junior Nationals, ending his three-year term on the board as President. =

Livestock Judging Contest by Kane Aegerter

Livestock Judging Winners. The Livestock Judging contest is a contest that puts the eyes and mind of our juniors to the test. The contestants this year judged four classes of cattle that we had at the Junior Nationals. Our officials were headed by Matt Woofolk and Steve Soules. They were the ones who provided our official placings and cuts with the four classes. Along with that, we gave the contestants 10 questions to go with some of the classes that ultimately tested their memory. Like any good contest, we had a few changes to try and help run it at its full ability. With great help from our junior board and candidates, we had another successful judging contest.

ready to go; the clowns waited to spray adhesive and paint. The strong men were at the ready to lift their blower hoses. Illusionists from all over the United States eagerly waited to show their craft. The bearded ladies were ready to show off their hair. Finally, a hush fell over the crowd as the ringmaster came over the microphone and the lights dimmed, “Attention ladies and gentlemen, kids of all age, prepare yourself for The Greatest Cattle Show on Earth!” Then the spot lights shot through the darkness onto the fitters… “five, four, three, two, one, GO”, and the show began. The crowd cheers the fitters on, and the crowd was astonished by the show. Each group was given 30 minutes to complete their show and at the end they were either left standing under the big top or sent home. These following groups were the crowd favorites.

Arts & Craft Winners Every year the Arts & Crafts contests is very competitive no matter what age division. Each year the creativity will blow you away! The judges have to make tough decisions on selecting the Top 5. It truly shows that our members are both creative in and out of the show ring. It is tough to create Shorthorn crafts that have to travel the many miles to NJSS and making sure they still look just as great on arrival. Lassie Tea & Lassie 101 by Callie Prochaska

Lassie Tea Participates. It was a bright and sunny day in Madison, Wisconsin on Thursday, June the 27th. We had our annual Shorthorn Lassie Tea that morning at 10:00 a.m. and it was such a great success with all the young aspiring lassies. We had around 24 young girls that ranged from ages 3-12 representing many different states. This year we decided to stray away from the typical afternoon of crafts and have the girls join in on a philanthropy activity. The girls had the opportunity to help change lives by getting tie blankets

ready to donate to the American Family Children Hospital right in Madison, Wisconsin. They all sat in circles around the blankets, full of laughter, enjoying their time of helping others. Once they finished that activity the girls cooled down while drinking pink lemonade in antique tea cups and eating cow shaped sugar cookies. Hannah and I were very grateful for the help we had from other state Queens and Princesses. These girls were representatives from Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, and

Wisconsin. I am so proud to see all of the love and passion these young girls have. Later that day, Lassie 101 was also held for all of the State Lassie Queens and Princesses, along with those wanting to start their own journey with the Shorthorn Lassie Association. During this time, we talked about the responsibilities of a lassie and answered any questions that the girls had about running for the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. We went over the costume, what it stands for, and how to properly wear it. I shared my own experiences and stressed with the girls that what you put into things is what you get out of them. Serving as a Lassie Queen is an honor and I am so glad to see the bright future these girls have. I would like to thank all of the individuals that attended these events and helped set up to make it such a great experience for these young girls. It has been such an honor serving as your National Shorthorn Lassie Queen! =

Photography Winners They say that a picture speaks 1,000 words. If the photos that were exhibited at the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference could speak 1,000 words, those stories would share amazing memories that were captured. The photos ranged from sunsets to farm scene, pasture shots to show ring shots. What amazing memories captured in these pictures. This year we had a total of 150 photography participants, some even entered multiple photographs within their division. This year was the first time Junior Nationals attendees had the opportunity to participate in a 5k run. Contestants met at 6 a.m. on June 29th to prove not only do they have skills in the show barn, but also on the racetrack. Sock Drive. This year AJSA partnered with The River Food Pantry for this year’s annual Sock Drive. Exhibitors were asked to bring new packages of socks to opening ceremony. This year, a total of 2,623 socks were donated by 26 states.

Socks were categorized by state then divided by the number of exhibitors in attendance from that states, to get a percentage per exhibitor. This year’s winning state was Mississippi with 60 pairs per exhibitor.

Socks were donated to The River Food Pantry to support their efforts of bringing the message of mercy and hope by providing nutritional basics and encouragement to the Madison area. = shorthorn country = august 2018
