FEMALE PRODUCTION SALE Friends, When we began this venture, a gallon of gas was $1.09, OJ Simpson was leading the LAPD on a chase in a white Bronco and Tonya Harding had a major beef with Nancy Kerrigan. The days are long, but the years are short. We welcome you and your family to the 25th Anniversary Sale of Bowman Superior Genetics. It seems like such a short time ago the first three cows from Wonder View Farms arrived and jumped out of the blue, wood-floored Corn Pro trailer into a new world. Since that fall day in 1994, we have been 100% committed to the Shorthorn breed. It’s amazing the places these cattle have taken our family from Greens Fork (population 273); we have viewed stock and made friends from Alberta to North Carolina, and from New York to California. Of course, we can’t leave out Australia; Thermal Energy is sure making his mark ‘down under.’ Producing cattle which excel for the core traits encompassing maternal instinct, ability and efficiency are fundamental for us. Fertility and function are king at BSG and for the many leading herds that have come to purchase genetics from us. If the cattle are not structurally, reproductively or maternally sound, they have no place at our table, regardless of their pedigree and EPDs. If you look back on our books today, you’ll see that only the strongest cow families have survived. In today’s automated world, it seems that only the “user friendly” products remain. While those words make Phil cringe, we believe the same in our cattle. These cows must pull their weight and be user friendly. While much of the seedstock industry continues their quest for extremes, we strive for optimum and balance.

As you turn the pages of this catalog, rest assured that we have offered up the very best of our program. From young cows, fall pairs, bred heifers and heifer calves: We’ve done our homework (easier at 60+ than 16) and dug deep into the pipeline to provide the most powerful and exciting maternal-based Shorthorns anywhere. Our young sire offering is as exciting as it has ever been. These two bulls represent the most potent genetics in our herd and are sure to take any maternally-focused cattle operation to the next level in the Shorthorn breed. Finally, we want to say, Thank You, sincerely. Thank you to the many friends we’ve acquired over the years that have utilized BSG genetics in their herd. Whether it be a front pasture brood matron or frozen embryos, your faith in our program is what drives us to continue our journey in creating the ideal beef cow. Sincerely, Phillip Bowman & Family

SHORTHORN ENTHUSIASTS,
I have always had great interest in the Shorthorn breed dating back to college days at Kansas State University with several enthusiastic young Shorthorn breeders and then working with a great group of commercially oriented Shorthorn producers in west central Missouri during my tenure with University of Missouri Extension. Their ability to make long lived, low maintenance mother cows combined with a unique propensity to advance marbling with some the very best breeds in the world should make them interesting to more cattlemen in the beef business. As we search for a unique second British breed to complement our continental genetics for even higher levels of hybrid vigor, the best cattle that Shorthorn has to offer are definitely in the conversation. “Best” is the key! Thankfully, there is becoming less and less room in our industry for below average. The Bowman Superior Genetics program is truly among the best this breed or any breed has to offer, not because they are blessed with great genetics or are just smarter than everyone else, but because they work harder to be better and have committed time and dollars to achieving that elevated level of value. Data collection and use along with and a solid commitment to the larger beef business are among the core value propositions that help them achieve their success. Years of amassing, then using complete information sets, not just for the standards EPDs, but for traits not currently utilized by their association like mature cow size and scrotal circumference, are the basis for their improvement. The old adage that “You get what you select for,” is spot-on when it comes to beef cattle breeding though not nearly enough breeders in the seedstock business understand that for the long term. One glance at the Bowman’s genetic trends for almost every economically important trait shows clearly that when you used unbiased EPD data tools for decision making you will absolutely get where you want to go. Clearly that is even more important to their commercial customers who totally depend on generational improvement for the traits that effect their bottom line every single time they purchase genetics. Always promoting progress is part of the reason too that Bowman Superior Genetics are known and respected not only in the US, but around the world. Newer technologies too like 100% herd DNA genomic enhancement, faster generational turnover to insure greater progress are combined with time tested practices like collecting carcass data on every sire used and developing all bulls and females on a non-starch diet in order to avoid masking non-useful genetics with feed and management, are all part of the commercial business targeted program here. So, whether you are searching for some of the world’s most consistent and highest profit Shorthorn genetics or are considering some of the designed composite products in the future of the Bowman program, I am confident you will appreciate the commitment to customers and the commitment to the future these folks put to plan each year and for each new generation. Sincerely, Marty Ropp, Allied Genetic Resources

COW
SASKVALLEY IMAGINE 65X
Bred to Muridale Thermal Energy 15A, due mid-March 2020. We could not think of a better way to kick off the 2019 offering than with a direct daughter of 73R. The Maggie cow family speaks for itself. It’s hard to let go of a direct daughter of 73R, but with this special sale, we had to sell her stoutest daughter to date. Maggie Mae is sired by the very impressive Saskvalley Imagine 65X who is used exclusively in the Leveldale program. This cow carries all the mass and volume 73R transmits so well, while having a stunning front end. Donor Dam qualified by the ASA. This cow may be carrying your next herd sire or donor dam.
You can’t manage what you don’t measure.
BREEDING PHILOSOPHY PRACTICAL IDEAS. PRACTICAL CATTLE.
At BSG we invest many man hours and dollars on gathering the most pertinent information on our cattle; we use it in our mating schemes, and offer the results to you, our fellow investor. Calving Scores, Birth Weights, Weaning Weights, Yearling Weights, Ultrasound Carcass Scans, Calving Scores, Mature Cow Hip Heights, Mature Cow Weights, and more are measured throughout the year. Some of these don’t even go into EPDs yet, but we will have the data when the day comes.
Function and Eye Appeal.
Who says you can’t have cattle that are industry applicable and still make people stop and turn their head? Sadly, too many say this. Although there is growing divergency in “Show vs. Commercial,” we work tirelessly to create an animal worthy of both. We find that cattle bred for generations only off of paper are about as stout as a piece of paper. It is well evidenced that cattle bred strictly off of phenotype appeal are more built off of the manipulation of feed and cosmetics, inherit terminal traits at a scary fast rate and are below average for maternal function. At BSG we take the nature of balance seriously and hope you will too.
Style needs Substance.
Here is a favorite quote we often are reminded of when making genetic decisions. This was coined by the founders of the American Simmental Association sometime in the late 1960’s – early 1970’s. We convert it for our Shorthorns!
“Visual analysis tells you what a Shorthorn appears to be. His pedigree tells you what he should be. His performance and progeny tests tell you what he actually is.” Like a successful basketball program, we look deeper than size and appearance when making our decisions on recruitment and retention. The animals have to fit into a box of “Total Skill Set.” Consider this: - Are all tall fellas good basketball players? No. (Luke is the perfect example) Or how about… - Are all who wear cowboy hats, cowboys? No. - Are all Supermodel’s good mothers? No. We assume that visual appearance controls maternal ability, but it does not. It is just the same in the basketball world-- height does not control shooting ability or overall game performance.
Profit = Output – Input.
The Profit Equation is a very important concept, because too often folks focus only on outputs; i.e. extreme pounds, monster Ribeye and higher MILK--- folks often think that ‘more is better.’ When one boasts about the size of the weaned calves we often ponder, “But how much feed did the cows have to consume in the pasture to milk that much, to wean that size of a calf? What is herds energy requirement? Did the dams all breed back? Don’t get us wrong, we are always looking to add some more gain in our cattle; ultimately, every animal is sold by the pound at some point in their life. But it is important to realize that constant selection for extreme growth is also selecting for extreme appetite and higher cow maintenance costs, and this happens when one doesn’t select for cattle that will stop growing at two years of age. We also know that big cows wean less pounds per acre of cow exposed when compared to her more moderate coworker. If we can keep mature cow size in moderation, therefore keeping feeding inputs lower on the commercial man’s budget, while at the same time select for increased – but not extreme – growth, then we are doing our part to generate a cow that will produce more dollars per acre than she takes in, and for a number of years. The inconvenient truth is that in order to be successful long term, your investment strategies, like in any business, must be based on facts and not just folklore. Sustainability and growth for this time-tested breed is based on its influence in the commercial world. If you’re investing in genetics, look at the animal’s genetic resume. Look at the results from objective facts. Look at how the individuals do their job as maternal beef cattle. When it comes to return on investment that helps you win long term, focus on the #1 most important trait in Shorthorn production, Profitability. 6 | Form to Function

Bred to Muridale Thermal Energy 15A, due mid-March 2020. What a fitting name. This cow is a true sale highlight. Her angulation and femininity combined with width of base and a true beef cow body makes her the definition of a “front pasture cow.” We always planned to flush this cow but never got an opportunity. Her incredible mother sold in our 2016 sale to Schafer Angus Ranch of California and did a marvelous job until her untimely death; this again made 1524 a future donor in our mind. Study her data; she is the maternal kind but her carcass traits are rare and powerful. Retaining the right to one successful flush with a minimum of 6 transferable embryos. BSG will cover drug costs.
