The People of BSG Bowman Superior Genetics is a family organized and managed Shorthorn and Shorthorn Composite program focused on the future of beef production with practical and useful cattle. Like any intense business, it takes several people to make systems function properly. Phillip and Linda Bowman started raising Shorthorn cattle in 1994. Phil had a passion for the red, white and roans since his FFA trip to the Chicago International in the mid-1960’s. Once acquiring property, they set up a small herd comprised of Wonderview Farms and Cates Farms Shorthorns for their young kids to raise their own 4-H projects. Phil and Linda are the day-in/day-out managers of the herd, taking care of all feeding, heat checking, culling and health care of the stock. Owning more than 125+ producing females is a big gig, but when you also manage the forage resources, calving season activities and are a leader in the area for pasture and conservation practices, is quite the undertaking since they still refuse to retire!

Phillip & Linda Bowman

Luke and Betsy Bowman are the parents of Phil and Linda’s closest grandkids, Oscar and Georgia; 3 years and 1 year old, respectively. Luke’s family lives on the farm as well. Betsy works in the animal health industry in a very diverse role at Elanco Animal Health. Luke, for half a decade, worked in the Beef Sire Department at Select Sires Inc. where he was tasked with working with some of the most influential purebred breeders from across the USA totaling 10 different breeds. He assisted in the procurement of several of the elite breed leading sires that are household names today. As of October, he now serves as the Director of Commercial and Industry Operations of the American Simmental Association. Luke’s role at BSG is breeding season management, genetic selection, cow matings and sire procurement.

Luke & Betsy Bowman

Cody, Lindsay and Caroline Sankey live just a few miles away from BSG in Economy, Indiana. Lindsay is the historian and traditionkeeper at BSG. She works 3 full-time jobs: Communications Manager at Harvest Land Co-op, mother of Baby Caroline and the voice of reason when Phil and Luke get big ideas of changing the ways of the BSG operation. She reminds us frequently of our roots which make us unique, and of our wings which allow us to fly. Cody comes from a century old Angus ranch in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Cody, the former Purebred Herd Manager and Livestock Judging Coach at Michigan State University, is now the Sire Procurement Manager at Genex Beef, one of the largest and most influential bull studs in the world. Cody brings expertise on many levels and helps every week in the development of this unique herd of cattle from a non-Shorthorn perspective. You likely have seen him judging shows in Louisville, Denver or your State Fair.

Cody & Lindsay Sankey

Scott & Laura Hamm

Scott and Laura Hamm are the parents of the oldest grandkids, Marlee and Harrison. Scott is a project engineer in Indianapolis and travels the globe during the week and is a super helpful hand on the weekends at BSG, making the place look good for our guests and customers. Laura is the ultimate peace-keeper and reminds us often of the goodness of being a family operation. Her family, although living near Indianapolis, will become the first of the Bowman family to get us back into the 4-H projects in the coming years. Her kids love spending time with Phil and Linda and love taking care of the new babies.

Calving Time

BSG Breeding Philosophy:

Practical Ideas. Practical Cattle.

“A dead calf has a very depressing weaning weight.” I have heard and read this quote it seems a thousand times while traveling the USA, Canada and Australia in search of - and promoting - industry influencing Angus, Hereford, Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Shorthorn, Chi, Maine, Brahman and Brangus beef sires. Live calves are the most important piece of the most important trait: Reproduction. The mother of a dead calf brings in $0.00 for the operation and costs you quite a bit, having to feed her for the past year. In the real world, these cows are culled because they are a loss. CALVING EASE, whether you look at Calving Ease Direct (CED) [The ability of a calf to come out without assistance] or Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) [The ability of a heifer to push a calf out without assistance] is the most critical trait a cattleman should focus on. If it is a hard pull, the resulting live calf is likely dumb, crippled or slow to get nursing right away, causing it to be chronically sickly, likely stunted, and behind its entire life. The genetic potential is lost and your investment is a waste. Unfortunately, this is a bigger problem for most registered cattle breeders; they give the mother another chance because of ‘who’ she is, not ‘what’ she is. Birthweight (BW) is important to us at BSG, but not nearly as significant as Calving Ease. BW is only an indicator of a calf’s birthing ease at parturition (shape and vigor are more significant) — but a low BW, 70 lbs. calf with coarse shoulders and monster bone circumference is really no different than an averaged shaped calf born at 140 lbs. — they both likely need assisted. This also hampers the cow’s ability to breed back on time. There is a reason this is often called as the “Oh Shoot Trait”—you learn pretty fast whether you bought from a reputable program or not. For decades, the USDA Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) has time and again found that the Shorthorn sired females are the best option for Calving Ease Maternal.

Pasture Time

“Bowman Superior Genetics offers a unique opportunity to purchase real world cattle that have data to back them up. Every measurement is taken on the BSG farm to help drive the profitability and success of their cow herd. These cows perform alone and are not pampered. The honesty and integrity of the BSG family help to make it the operation many herds keep coming back to for their next cattle genetics investment.” - Andrew Stewart Manager, Stewart Select Angus, Indiana SSA continually supplies Angus A.I. sires to bull studs like Select Sires Inc. and Accelerated Genetics

You’ve made the good move and have Shorthorn or Shorthorn influenced cows in your herd. Although there was a time when people might have scoffed at this, you should now consider yourself to be ahead of the curve by implementing BSG genetics. Milk is rarely, if ever, a problem with Shorthorn cattle. This is not news to anyone, as there are still some dual purpose herds out there. USDA MARC has found that the Shorthorn influenced beef animal is ranked #1 against other breeds for calf survivability to weaning; so now you have more calves to sell at weaning time! We pay close attention to Weaning Weight (WW) and select off of in-herd ratios when deciding which bulls to make available for sale. After all, most cattle are still sold at weaning time. But lastly, and maybe the most important for the future of our operation and yours too, is docility. Kids these days have incredible access to information and education. More and more are leaving the farm because they can learn about endless opportunities in urban settings and some leave because of negative experiences on the farm. If we want future generations to raise cattle, we must ensure that we are marketing to them like other outside enterprises. If a kid becomes scared of the mean cows at calving, or dislikes the cattle that chase them to the fence, they are going to find somewhere else to work or something else to do on the weekends instead of helping on the farm. In a survey published by the National Cattleman’s Beef Association a couple years ago, DOCILITY was the #2 most desired heritable trait among beef producers, after calving ease, of course. The American Shorthorn Association doesn’t publish a Docility EPD because there is not disposition issue with Shorthorn cattle like our black hided competition.

Dinner Time You will notice several references to Marbling and the MARB EPD throughout this catalog. Marbling is one of the God-given beauties to Shorthorn and Shorthorn-influenced cattle. Why is it important? Simple: No one wants a dry, tough, tasteless steak. Marbling is a highly heritable trait that makes the dining experience with beef so desirable. In 2016, Certified Angus Beef (CAB) has now sold over a billion pounds of beef because MARB is so popular with the consumer. Period. Marbling is that trait that makes your freezer-beef customers keep coming back and asking for another half of a steer. Marbling is what makes US beef superior to pork and poultry in the meat animal industry. At BSG we are a full-circle seedstock operation. We care about fertility, calving and longevity, plus we care about the end-product eating experience. Why do black-hided cattle sell so well at the market? It is not because they are black, but because it is assumed that they are Angus influenced, therefore the cattle will marble well. The secret is that the black color has no correlation to Marbling ability. Now that nearly every breed has turned black in the USA, you don’t know if the cattle marble or not. However, there is one breed that marbles every time, and that is the authentic Shorthorn. The desire for blue roan [black roan] (Roan Shorthorn parent x black hided parent) cattle is growing because the informed and sophisticated commercial cattlemen know that there is Shorthorn in the blood, and that means the person who sells the cattle on the rail will receive premiums. Maybe that person is you, or maybe that person is your feeder calf buyer. The Angus breed as a whole has focused on carcass quality for decades and the cattle have moved the marbling needle just a little bit. Shorthorn, it seems, has done everything but focus on carcass traits and still they marble with the best Angus cattle. This tells us that the Shorthorn x Angus cross is likely the superior F1 British cross in modern beef cattle production.

Colonel Gus Son

JSF King Working at Paint Valley Farms, OH and Jungels Shorthorn Farm, ND.

Mapleton Colonel Gus 71U earned his historic place in the Shorthorn world the blue-collar way. We wish more popular sires shared his story: Bred by Dr. Bert Moore, “CG” was born in North Dakota and was sold to a commercial cow/calf outfit as a yearling. A few years later while Derek Jungels, of Jungels Shorthorn Farm made customer visits, he came across this roan Shorthorn bull who had been siring standout weanling calves and remarkable yearling females. Derek dug a little deeper, negotiated a price, and CG received a new home on the Jungels ranch. After a couple years of service, CG had made some drastic difference to the Jake’s Proud Jazz 266L cattle by adding a little more scale, more extension to their skeleton and the proper angulation that has been so revered among registered Shorthorn breeders. At the same time BSG was in need of another semi-proven sire to add to the Greens Fork pastures and worked out possession of Colonel Gus. This 100% fullblood was a complete outcross to the Bowman herd, as we had never sampled the Gus lines from western Canada, and we had not used much Eagle influence since we were stacked with power from the Rodeo Drive pedigrees in the operation. As his calves have grown, and their data has been collected and submitted to the national database, we find that among active sires, he ranks in the Top 5% for MILK and Top 15% for Muscle (REA) and Top 20% for Calving Ease. On the phenotypic side, we find that he has made some the most attractive cattle we have seen around the country since the influence of CF Trump. For a Shorthorn bull to prove himself commercially first, garner so much attraction that semen fetched more than $400/unit at auction, then also inject breed improving Calving Ease, Muscle and Milk to the herds he has influenced make his story a special one. But his story is not over. On sale day, we offer you the opportunity for Colonel Gus to start his own legacy in your operation.

BSG Breeding Philosophy:

Practical Ideas. Practical Cattle.

At BSG the cattle speak for themselves. We are not great marketers and we avoid big feed bills, however we are answer seekers and cattle breeders. We know that traits like maternal ability and family farm friendly Shorthorns are more than just big rib depth, a fancy neck and a pretty color. When every other breed focuses so much on pounds and growth, pounds and growth and pounds and growth and forgets about balanced traits, we make a conscious decision to focus on utility and maintenance traits that are measured and needed. Crossbreeding is about breed complementarity to get the best of all breeds. We know the role of the purebred/registered sector is to supply superior genetics to the commercial beef producer. We run our cows and feed our cows like our customers do. This is the only way to keep you from being disappointed in your genetic investment. If you push them harder than we do, that’s just icing on the cake!

How to read EPDs? First, EPD stands for Expected Progeny Difference. Do not over think EPDs. They are a tool for you to compare how the cows will produce. If Cow A has a Weaning Weight EPD (WW) of 42 and Cow B has a WW of 31, you should expect, that when bred to the same sire, calves by Cow A should be 11 pounds heavier on average than those by Cow B. The same is for the traits expressed by percentage. Let’s do Calving Ease Direct EPD (CED): If Bull A has a CED of 5 and Bull B has a CED of -2, when their daughters calve as heifers to the same sire, we should expect there to be a 7% more likely chance that Bull B’s daughters will need assistance at calving.

More on EPDs:

Calving Ease Direct (CED) – The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers. This value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; the more positive a number is the more desirable.

“It has been a pleasure to watch the evolution of the BSG program over the last decade. They have been diligent in their efforts to apply the science of genetic improvement in the breeding of cattle. This sale provides the opportunity to take advantage of their breeding philosophy and secure some of the most highly documented cattle in the Shorthorn breed.” - Dr. Bert Moore Retired North Dakota State University Professor, Former Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the American Shorthorn Association

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) – If planning to retain daughters from a particular bull then CEM is very important. The value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; CEM reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters who calve unassisted. The more positive a number is the more desirable. Birth Weight (BW) – An indicator of birth weight and calving ease. Larger BW EPDs typically, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW) – An indicator of growth from birth to weaning, measured from adjusted 205 day weights. Yearling Weight (YW) – An indicator of growth from birth to one year of age, measured from adjusted 365 day weights. Milk (MK) – Measured in pounds of calf attributed to milk at weaning. Total Maternal (TM) – A combination of weaning and milk EPDs, this number expresses a cow’s ability to bring in a heavier calf at weaning. Carcass Weight (CW) – Expressed in pounds as a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling Score (MB) – Evaluation of intramuscular fat deposition in the ribeye as expressed in USDA numeric marbling scores. Higher values indicate genetics that are expected to marble and have a higher quality grade. Backfat (FT) – Measured between the 12th and 13th ribs and expressed in inches. Ribeye Area (REA) – Expressed in units of square inches and offers genetic differences in muscularity at the 12th rib. Calving Ease Direct ($CEZ) – This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. British Maternal Index ($BMI) – This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Feedlot ($F) – $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multitrait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F.

“Shorthorn genetics have the opportunity to provide value and real profit to the Beef business when they bring their British breed roots and traits to planned crossbreeding programs. Bred to Mapleton Colonel Gus 71U, due mid April 2017. We purchased this female for some big cash a few years ago in the Leveldale Investment Sale; she was consigned by our friends at Peak View Ranch in Colorado. We had to bid often and early to get her to BSG as the contender was Lee Miller of Ohio. Lee has a good eye and we were glad to get this Lad 13N daughter. This is a front pasture type of cow.

Bred to Thomas Top Hand 0536, breeding update at sale. Fact: I do not want to sell this cow. We found Cathy 3W on a herd visit at Gar-Lind Shorthorns in west-central Saskatchewan with Peter and Christine Boake of Alta Cedar Shorthorns. We spotted her as the best baby calf that year and a couple of years later we bought her as the top seller in the Gar-Lind dispersal. She is so gentle natured and so beautiful She is a front pasture cow by all standards. We bred this female a little different in 2016: Being a 100% fullblood Shorthorn we decided to mate her one of the premier proven sires in the Select Sires Angus battery, Thomas Top Hand 0536 (no relation to JSF Top Hand 34R, sire of many of the females in this sale, but was named after 34R because of his incredible appeal). The resulting calf will carry elite traits of low BW and crazy growth in pound from this influential Angus added to superior goodness that an fullblood Shorthorn offers. Bowman Blend at its best! Thanks to Gary and Linda Rose for allowing us to use this beautiful female at BSG.

“We are located in Central Florida raising both purebred and commercial cattle. I recognize the importance of sourcing outside genetics from seed stock producers that have a true understanding of the BEEF Industry. The Bowmans were referred to me by a feedlot manager that had fed their cattle multiple years and experienced phenomenal results. I was very pleased to find they weren’t just breeding for feedlot performance, but also moderately framed, structurally correct, maternal oriented cattle that seem to thrive in a challenging Florida environment.” - Henry Kempfer, Kempfer Cattle Co. is a several thousand head cow/calf operation that also breeds registered Brahman and Angus cattle. “The Shorthorn breed has tremendous potential to contribute to the commercial beef industry. To do so they must be objectively described genetically in large equal opportunity contemporary groups; have an abundance of convenience traits such a calving ease and shedding early and completely; and have feeder cattle market desired color patterns. Unfortunately, there are too few herds producing this type of Shorthorn to meet demand. Bowman Superior Genetics is one of the leading herds breeding performance oriented Shorthorns that check all the boxes to have a very positive impact on the commercial beef industry. “ - Dr. Bob Hough, retired breed executive, Red Angus Association of America

We will be VERY interested in what this cow has for a baby—we may want to negotiate it to be a herd sire at BSG if born a bull. If not, we would REALLY like to retain part of a couple flushes to 634. One of, if not the last Byland Gold Plated daughters on the planet. Top 10% for WW & YW while being in the Top 3% for Carcass Weight. She has the best production record on the farm; 8 calves ratioing 102@BW, 106@WW and 5 progeny with 104@YW. Possibly the most exciting growth-performance cow we have raised. Our biggest mistake is not flushing her last year before we sold her.

“There is an old saying, “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” In the cattle business, where those measurements, like weights, percent MARB and REA, equate to dollars in the bank, that old adage rings true. With the current cattle market you cannot afford to base your decisions off of subjective selection. At BSG, Shorthorns are are objectively measured and bred for profit.”

Injects visual top shape and rib like we all want. Daughters are extremely gentle!

Congratulations to Phil and Linda and their family for a job well done. Breeding good commerciallyacceptable Shorthorn cattle is not easy—but BSG has done it. From the time they purchased their first Shorthorn cows from my dad, BSG has paid attention to objective data and used all the information available--and if data wasn’t available, they measured and collected their own in order to learn more about their cows. Phil and Luke traveled lots of miles to locate genetics to improve their cattle. They found better cattle with unique pedigrees--and so did the breed. The cattle generated by BSG over the past two decades have worked in Greens Fork, IN and for their customers throughout the U.S. The cows are good—but the people are better—and the best crop that Phil and Linda raised were three good kids who have a love for agriculture and the Shorthorn breed. - Brian House Beef Sire Department Manager, Select Sires Inc.
