breeder management in mind. We all need to be aware of these genetic defects and as one committee member commented, “we cannot sweep them under the rug”. Another area looked at in depth was the WHR system. Many breeders have differing opinions about this program. The board and staff understand many of these issues. By looking into the inner working of this program, it was determined that timing is an issue for herd inventories. ASA will move the inventory date back and the billing date back into the fall 45 days or so, and will try to do the same the next year. This practice will better align with the management practices of our breeders. The board also looked in to the fairness of WHR ET calves in relation to the free fees for registration and transfers compared to normal calves born in WHR. They made the decision that the need for EPDs should be the driving force to become a WHR breeder. Looking into this system there are a number of inadequacies that need to be addressed in the future. A strong message the board heard from breeders and some staff members was the need to become part of the multi breed EPD evaluation the Simmental Association conducts. The board made the move to do a test run and review the results. These results would be reviewed by the board, Committees and staff. After reviewing the results, the next test runs would be done. It will be July before the total changeover would be in place to see new EPDs from using the multi-breed comparison. The topic of recording black ShorthornPlus cattle with their actual percentage was addressed, recommend by the committee and approved. The need to change this comes from different directions. One is the need for ShorthornPlus cattle’s accurate percentage to be more precise in the multibreed EPD evaluation. We are a registry association that should be recording animals with the proper percentage of breed influence. The industry is moving to a more composite type animal with performance attached and they become more valuable as shorthorn influenced cattle with proper percentages. Please understand this in no way will allow a black animal to become a purebred, or a black Shorthorn ever be shown as a purebred. The show committee made recommendations for some changes. The board has approved new system to replace the Pace Show format. Because of the importance of committee involvement, the board wishes to get the Show committees response to the 2 options that the staff has presented for a new national shows and regional show
bull and heifer of the year. This 3-day board meeting had many topics on the agenda. The efforts of committee members and ASA staff motivated your board to be thorough. They looked at the information and acted with enthusiasm for the betterment of this great breed. I know everyone will not agree with all the policies put in place. I can tell you that the board and staff made decisions based on their belief that it would be better for the entire breed. The team efforts I have mentioned - the board, committees and staff - is just one part of the big picture. Now, it is time for the Shorthorn breed to become one big team pulling in the
same direction. To make the Shorthorn breed the best it can be. Stand tall and be proud to be part of the Shorthorn Team!!! =

=Board Meeting Minutes ASA September Board Meeting Minutes ASA Board Meeting Minutes from September 7, 8 and 9, 2013 Board Members in attendance; president, Les Mathers, vice president, Mike, Bennett, Mark Gordon, Ricky Guidry, Ed Kruse, Marty Loving, Lynn Nelson, and on phone conference Jim Freed and Billy Zack Taylor. Staff members in attendance included, Executive, Montie Soules, Patrick Wall and Jake Alden. President, Les Mathers called the meeting to order on September 7, at 1:00 p.m. in the ASA Board Room. The minutes were reviewed and read and approved. President Les Mathers presented Ricky Guidry with a plaque recognizing him as the president last year. GeneSeek and Zoetis made separate presentations to the board regarding the selection of ASA’s future DNA lab. The tests will include Genetic Defects, 50K research program, parentage verification and possible tests for horned/polled and color gene markers. Patrick, Jake and Montie gave a PowerPoint presentation on subjects listed in the agenda. A letter from Bill Rasor was presented with information from the foundation as a source for partially funding the 50K project. The board discussed these presentations and adjourned at 5:30 for dinner with ASA staff. Sunday, September 8, 8:00 a.m. Tom Schwaller, CPA for ASA and Andrew Kind were in attendance. Tom gave a report on the fiscal year audit. The Board along with Tom Schwaller, Andrew Kind and Montie Soules discussed changing the ASA fiscal year because of the complications of the Junior National being the last week of the current fiscal year. The board approved to change the fiscal year to September 1 - August 31. The motion passed unanimously. The Denver sale, “The Summit” is being managed by Aegerter Marking Services. The board asked for a written agreement. The Key Performance Indicator graphs were reviewed and discussed. Show Committee: The committee

expressed the desire to have a maximum of 10 head per class and the question of why judges are removed from their suggestions. Issues discussed were the protest rules, painting rule and PACE program restructure. The staff agreed to limit classes 12 head or less (10 head whenever possible). The following changes to the protest rules and the board approved painting rules in the future. 1. Add instructions and rules for properly submitting a protest. A. A monetary fee of $250 is required at time of protest. B. The protest must be filed with ASA staff or CEO prior to animal entering the show ring C. If the protest is upheld, premiums are forfeited; the exhibitor and/or any person directly involved with the rules violation may be banned from exhibiting at the discretion of the ASA Board. 2. Remove the “No Painting” but it is against the rules to change the animal’s original color. A. If it is red it is red, if it is white it is white, if it is black it is black. The board approved to discontinue the PACE program and hold multiple national shows. The new system will have five regions and recognize a Show Heifer and Show Bull of the Year for each region. The staff will present details for shows and rules for the board’s approval. The motion passed unanimously. Committee report for the combined Genetic Evaluation and Commercial Committees: Recommendations were made to move forward with the Multi Breed Genetic Evaluation with Simmental. The committee also endorsed the 50K project for genomic EPDs. Genetic Defects was discussed and a recommendation was made to handle the DS genetic defect in a similar manner as other genetic defects. It was a consensus that there will be more of these conditions in the future and need to be managed by both the breeders and the association. The board approved to start the first test run for the Simmental genetic evaluation to review the resulting EPDs by the board and committees. Motion passed unanimously.
shorthorn country = november 2013
Discussion was held on Genetic Defects and the DS description from Dr. Jon Beever. The board approved the following rules for Digital Subluxation Genetic defects in Shorthorn breed •Registration will NOT be allowed for “affected” animals (homozygote) under any circumstance. (This means ASA will not register a calf resulting from a sire and dam that both are DS carriers unless the resulting calf is tested free.) This is for recessive genetic defect carriers only – Only impacts non-lethal defects. •Carrier animals will be registered and defect status will be noted on the pedigree. •Outside breed (initial entries) will have at risk “danger levels” shown with the following color codes on the online registry system for genetic defects; red as a carrier, yellow is at risk to be a carrier and green as being free. •ASA reserves the right to use other breed association resources to capture defect status of animals coming in to the ASA registry. Motion passed unanimously. The ShorthornPlus committee suggested that the percentage of black ShorthornPlus animals should reflect their true Shorthorn influence. The committee was adamant that a black ShorthornPlus should never become a purebred Shorthorn. The rebranding of the ShorthornPlus was discussed by the committee and in general felt it would be positive. This rebranding issue was left by committee to have ASA staff contact industry people for feedback. This committee strongly supported moving to the multi-breed evaluation and moving forward with the DNA 50K project as well as getting more parentage verification and more data and technology in producing our EPDs. Board discussion on this topic included the need for breeder education concerning color pattern inheritance (red vs black or red on red) and the advantage of having the proper Shorthorn percentage on individuals when doing a multibreed evaluation or composite crossbreeding programs. The Board approved to record black ShorthornPlus cattle with their true percentage of Shorthorn in the future. It is
mandatory that a black ShorthornPlus will never become a purebred, regardless of the percentage of Shorthorn in it. A purebred Shorthorn must be of traditional Shorthorn color in order to become a purebred Shorthorn. It is understood that red, white and roans that are 15/16 percentage and higher only get purebred papers. It will be understood that a black high percentage ShorthornPlus will never be shown as a purebred because it will never be allowed to be black and become a purebred. Motion passed unanimously. The issue of figuring the percentage of individuals when an animal is being registered as 13/16 when the tradition and system has been to look at a 15/16 as a 100% (example: 15/16 bred to a 7/8 = 13/16 if look at a purebred 15/16th as a 100% bred to 7/8 = 15/16 which then becomes a purebred. The board approved to leave the system as it is to account a 15/16 purebred as 100% when figuring percentages from progeny. Any animals that have been recorded improperly need to be corrected by ASA. The topic of not allowing a red purebred Maine Anjou entering the ShorthornPlus as a 他 ShorthornPlus was discussed. The board approved to discontinue allowing a purebred red Maine Anjou to be registered as a 他 ShorthornPlus as of January 1, 2015. Motion passed. The board asked to have breeders that register Durham Red ShorthornPlus cattle contacted for their feelings about discontinuing the program the results brought back to the board. Gwen Crawford gave an AJSA report with flow charts for organizing the Junior National. A tentative budget and possible cost of the 2014 Junior National was presented. The recommendations of the Junior Task Force have been put into action. Audrey Hambright gave a Communications/Advertising/Marketin g report. The presentation showed new promotional items and handouts. She also gave a brief report on an updated/new streamlined and user friendly website. Additional funds are being allocated to ASA promotions. Don Cagwin asked for approval to allow animals carrying a genetic defect to sell in the ASA sponsored NAILE sale. The board chose to leave the rules as is for sponsored ASA sales that no cattle with known genetic defects are allowed to sell. The board discussed the possibility of recognizing distinguished breeders that are breed icons and founders. It was
decided there would be an honoree at national shows when appropriate. Jack C. Ragsdale will be honored annually at the NAILE Shorthorn show starting in 2013. The show will be referred to as The Jack C. Ragsdale Shorthorn show permanently every year following. This year at the 2014 Denver show which is the National Shorthorn Show, George Alden would be honored and the show will be called the George Alden National Shorthorn Show. Honorees will be recognized during the show. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 for the evening. Monday, September 9, 8:10 a.m. The first discussion of the morning led to selecting a lab that would do all the ASA work. The proposals from the labs were very similar. The board asked Patrick Wall to put together a comparison of the Zoetis and GeneSeek proposals for the board to consider at a later date when all information and differences are compiled. Discussion on WHR fees and free activities was thoroughly discussed. The free transfers in WHR were explained and the amount of funds that was lost to ASA. The focus was on the ET calves registered and transferred in WHR when there were numerous animals processed for a single cow fee or no fee in the case of transfers. Discussion about requiring a breeder to be a WHR breeder before EPDs are issued and requiring WHR breeders turn in data in order to maintain EPDs The board approved to extract all ET registrations and ET transfers from the WHR enrollment as of January 1, 2014. The animals affected would be charged TOC registration and transfer fees. Motion passed unanimously. The board approved the following policy: In order to have EPDs, breeders must be a WHR breeder. TOC breeders will lose EPDs on their animals when this policy is put into effect. If the technology is available in the registry, this policy would go into effect January 1, 2015. Motion passed unanimously. The board discussed looking for a new registry system. It seems the association is hostage to the registry system when changes are needed to be progressive for membership. The subject of obtaining a (DS) Digital Subluxation sire list from Dr. Beever was discussed. Staff is to pursue. More discussion on the 50K DNA genomics project and the ASA approved lab issue.
The board approved that all DNA activity accepted by ASA would go through the ASA approved lab before the results would be added to the ASA registry system and to move all parentage verification to the SNP marker process and that all ET donors and AI sires would be required to have a parentage test done and AI sires verify to both the sire and dam, and ET donors verify to their sire. There will be a transition period needed to get enough SNP markers in place to have the verified parentage required from the SNP test. It is understood that any other tests in place should have the verified parents of said Donors and AI sires in order to register an AI or ET calf. Full implementation will take place when an ASA approved lab is selected and/or the appropriate SNP tests for parentage are in place. Discussion on the 50K genomic EPD project continued. The ASA needs 1,000 DNA samples for the 50K tests; approximately 600 are in place. The approved ASA lab will do 100 foundation type sires free of charge. Approximately 300 head need to be tested that have minimum accuracies. It was agreed that Patrick Wall needed to put a minimum number on accuracies of EPDs for sires to qualify for this genomic 50K test and any subsidy that might be available. The board approved to implement the 50K DNA genomic project by asking the Shorthorn Foundation for a contribution that ASA would match toward subsidizing the cost of testing the first 300 head submitted and the same subsidy credited to breeders that have already sent in samples being held for this same project. Patrick should instruct the staff which 100 head we need; which will be at no cost to the owner. Motion passed unanimously. The board broke to executive session. The three-day meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.

Patrick ASA director of Wall genetic improvement
No Excuses What a ride the last five years have been! By now, most of the ASA members have learned that I have accepted a new beef cattle gig with Iowa State University Extension & Outreach as an Area Beef Field Specialist. However, this likely won’t be the last time you will read some of my work in the Shorthorn Country. Some educational material from my new desk may show up from time to time. After 40-plus articles I’ve told you everything I know and some of what I didn’t, so it was time for some new material! I have enjoyed this part of the job and certainly welcome your continued feedback on what topics need covered moving forward. Since this is my last article, most of you probably think I’m gonna unload five years of frustration in the next five00 words. Not really. Instead, I’ll tell a quick story then share a bit of my hopeful vision for the breed in the years to come. My story is about the most astute cattle breeder I have ever met. His name is not important; the name he gave me likely wasn’t his real name anyway. This breeder had zero livestock background when he took over the management of a beef and dairy herd in the state of Nevada. He obtained all the reading material he could get his hands on: books on animal breeding principles, cow nutrition, breed association magazines, semen catalogs, etc. He then developed a plan using only the current budget and the existing cow herd. He purchased no live cattle; the boss wouldn’t let him. In less than five years, he had the dairy herd producing twice as much milk from fewer cows in production while reducing feed and labor costs. He took the beef herd from a mongrelized mess of inconsistency to a performance and carcass marvel that would destroy the average herd on the rail. I met this man as a graduate student because he reached out to a Meat Science professor at the University of Nevada. The breeder wanted to learn how to carcass ultrasound his heifers and bull prospects because no one would come do it for him. Long story short, they flew me to Nevada to teach him how to scan. It was

an experience I will never forget. The farm was located near Carson City, and I believe the farm sign out front read: Nevada State Penitentiary. They had really good fence! Yes, the greatest cattle breeder I have ever met was a prison inmate that managed the on-site prison farm. He learned how to A.I., gave another inmate a picture of a working facility, which they then built from scratch out of guard rails and scrap metal. It was the stoutest cow working facility I’ve ever seen! The warden did allow him to purchase some semen, though I never saw a semen tank anywhere. Regardless, using only genetic selection on the sire side of the pedigree, he “fixed” both cow herds in short order. The take home message of the story is as simple as the inmate’s breeding plan. When he started, the cows had no tags, no age, no breed, no pedigree, no names, and he didn’t own a single one of them. As a result, he made no excuses for them; if the cow didn’t meet his expectations or at least beat the average, she was culled. Through diligent record keeping and ‘a lot of time on his hands,’ he was able to build a set of cows that worked. His only motivation was the desire to maintain his status that allowed him to work outside of his cell block. My vision for the American Shorthorn Association is likely more of a hopeful dream in reality. I wish that even 20% of the membership would try to emulate the breeding philosophy of a convicted felon. Cattle enthusiasts of all breeds make far too many excuses for their cows. On the female side, we often call them cow families. In my opinion, females should have to earn their namesake like any other. I love using the government as an analogy to managing cows. A lot of ranchers are right-wing Conservatives in the voting booth, but they somehow become left-wing liberals when it comes time to balance the cow budget. In my opinion, every cow deserves up to five2 weeks of “unemployment” if disease or predators take her calf, but she best get back to work in a year. Please don’t put your cows on

extended “government assistance.” They just don’t deserve welfare; the commercial producer doesn’t allow it, and seedstock breeders should take note. On the sire side of the equation, too many breeders have come to accept the stereotypes placed on Shorthorns rather than prove to the industry we are making progress. Like everything else in life, you gotta earn it! And by earn it, I mean prove it through documented performance records. If a prison inmate can do it, any excuse you can come up with has little merit. Throughout my tenure with ASA, I have tried hard to represent all breeders equally regardless of their operation’s goals. By the same token, I have always represented the cattle honestly, no excuses, no regrets. If I had one consistent frustration over the last five years, it’s that Shorthorn breeders are too often “win-lose” minded if you will. For one operation’s cattle to be successful, some other operations must be unsuccessful. In order for breeders to feel like they were “winning” they express the shortfalls of other breeders to like-minded cattlemen. Unfortunately, the end result is always negative conversation about Shorthorn cattle. This is absolutely the worst way to grow membership, registrations, and industry acceptance. The Shorthorn breed has a lot of good things to talk about, and the industry needs to hear them every day. Regardless of breed, genetics popular in the exhibition arena need to be more practical. Commercially driven cattle need to be better phenotypically. The industry knows that. However, cattle with good EPDs should not be expected to fix the woes of show cattle in one generation. Likewise, elite show ring genetics should not be expected to ‘make a great one’ when mated to cattle destined for commercial production. Yes, the two worlds could and should come together a good bit, but it’s not going to happen in the next calf crop. (continued on page 15)

Get Involved It also comes with a certain risk factor. How will calves act around a person that they are unfamiliar with? Calves may be broke, but are they broke for the person who is just going to lead them in the ring? It probably seems convenient that you don’t have to do all if the work, you get to show and take the satisfaction after you do well. I personally believe that there is so much more to it. I have so many old show heifers that have made me cry the day they go out to pasture because of the special bond we have built over the last 12 months. I know that at the end of the day they are just a short drive down to the pasture and it is amazing how you can walk up to an old show heifer and she will still remember you. So how do kids that don’t take care of their own cattle build this special bond? It breaks my heart that not every-

one gets to experience this bond. Ultimately we need to change the number of juniors that are not involved with their own calves. I really just want juniors to have the same experiences I have over the years and as well as close bonds with current and past show heifers. I look forward to seeing you all in Louisville! Safe travels! =
Happy Thanksgiving!
It is that time of the year again! We are all busy working in the fields, finishing up sales and getting the string ready for Louisville. I know how exciting it can be to get a new group of calves in the barn, but it also comes with a lot of work. So who will do all that work? The breeder, a hired hand, or the juniors family themselves? One of the biggest problems we face in todays industry is that many juniors don’t care for their own animals. Showing cattle is a big responsibility and I feel that it is a good way for a person to learn the meaning of hard work and dedication. However do kids these days actually learn this if someone else is taking care of their calves? Not likely. It should teach juniors that you have to get up everyday and work hard at something if you really want it.

(continued from page 14)
In my opinion, it’s going to take a dramatic change in the ASA membership to a win-win message. I hate the cliché, but the industry is demanding much more than a “cow freshener” bull. They want to be a part of a breed that has momentum and a positive message. If breeders can talk positively about the breed they love, it’s a good start.
From my humble perspective, it has been an honor to serve the ASA, and I hope you have gained as much value from my efforts as I’ve gathered from you all. Thank you never seems like enough in situations like this; I will forever be in debt to the red, white, and roan. =

Brandi and Tyler Hofstatter welcome their little girl, Fusion Cattle’s newest showman, Braelyn Janet Hofstatter on September 1, 2013. She weighed 6 lbs., 4 1⁄2 oz. -THANK YOU SULLIVAN FARMS/SULLIVAN SUPPLYRecently our barn burned down. In just under two minutes time we lost what took a lifetime to accumulate in show equipment and general livestock supplies. Luckily none of the critters were harmed, only a few singed whiskers on a kitten or two. Losing a barn and all of its contents was hard, to say the least, but not having the cows around is probably the worst part. Our oldest daughter Kylea was just getting done with her first summer of showing as a junior exhibitor. She had a very good show season. Not only with the success in the show ring that her and her heifer “Sable” had experienced, but she had developed a great friendship with this heifer. Kylea will never forget “Sable”, just the way many of us will never forget that first show heifer/steer we all had and the friendships and memories that will last forever. I have always thought of John Sullivan as an incredibly generous man. He has helped my wife and I with so much since we have started our involvement with the cattle business. From cutting us a deal on heifers, cow, or embryos, to giving us advise on feeding and the breeding of those cattle. We are not big spenders and he has always been able to find us something in our price range that we would be happy with. After our fire Kylea wrote John a letter explaining our situation, and asking if he had any used show equipment for sale, as we would never be able to buy it all brand new. John immediately told her to come on out to Dunlap and he would have some things for her. Our family and some friends loaded in a pickup and headed out to the Sullivan Farms Pasture Sale. When we arrived John and Dede took Kylea to the supply store. They had decided to just give Kylea a bunch of supplies for free. They loaded the back of the pickup we took with as much as it could hold full of equipment, just to be nice. We were amazed with what all they gave my daughter. The friendships we have developed along the way have made showing cattle a great experience. We will never forget those that have helped us so much over the years. Lacie and I can never thank John and Dede enough for what they have done. We will never forget your kindness and generosity. THANKS AGAIN! Jacob, Lacie & Kylea Braman Broken B Farms

Our cow herd is strong with outcross genetics. Our first cows came from Gordon Brockmueller. His guidance provided us a strong foundation.
in Studer’s Crazy Tra Our extended family has been in the Shorthorn business for over 40 years. We’ve been building on that foundation for over 20. We truly belive we’re breeding - Genetics That’ll Work & Win.
