Members & Breeders Members/breeders please check and update your email address and possible mailing address or any contact information with the ASA! If members /breeders have had or have multiple memberships or accounts to check with registrations for the proper name they are doing business under (example work sent in as John Doe family is not the same as John Doe Farm and breeders end up getting 2 accounts and the inventories are divided. Registrations try to call and verify when they feel it may be incorrect. ASA does not find all of these possible duplications.) Please check and make sure work is sent in with the same name or member number each time and that transfers made to you are in the proper name and/or member number you are using.
Reminder AI Sire/Donor Dam Requirement All AI Sires and Donor Dams will be required to have a Digital Subluxation (DS) result on file with the ASA in order to register calves. All AI Sires/Donor Dams are still required to have a DNA Profile and TH and PHA result on file with the ASA in addition to the DS test.

just returned from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Annual Convention and Trade Show in San Antonio, TX, which may be the largest assembly of cattlemen and cattlewomen in the US. Over 8,000 cattle industry enthusiasts attend and take part in educational and informational presentations about new science and economics forecasts for our industry. Each day, there are a variety of sessions addressing topics from animal health and technology to market expec-
tations. This trade show is a magnificent array of agricultural displays of everything imaginable that cattle people use. Vendors enthusiastically share their product information with interested attendees and supply materials and advice on what they can provide for ranchers and farmers. The ASA was represented with its newly improved booth (pictured below). Your Board of Directors convened during the NCBA Convention.

The presence of the Shorthorn Association and Shorthorn breeders at this major cattle event is very important. Our competition goes all out to make an impression on future buyers of bulls and purebred seedstock. The Shorthorn breed must stand out and make an impression at these events, so breeders will be telling our story as they mingle. Shorthorn enthusiasts’ presence at these types of events sends a message to future Shorthorn purchasers that the breed is alive and flourishing. People attract people! It is human nature to want to become part of something that is growing. and “People attract people!” More more cattle people are asking about Shorthorns. Many are looking for bulls, some have Shorthorn influenced females and need to replace them, and some are asking about show heifers for their children and grandchildren. This was a very positive experience for all of us who attended. There is a tremendous opportunity in the market “There is a tremendous place for opportunity in the market the right place for the right kind of kind of Shorthorn genetics.” Shorthorn genetics. Many educated cattle people understand what a Shorthorn cross can do for their program. Even more have become curious about the assets this breed can bring to their operation. By being there and by looking the part, we are attracting interest in Shorthorn cattle not only at NCBA but at other trade shows we attend to promote the breed. ASA Board members saw this and understood it. We, as a breed want as many Shorthorn breeders as possible to attend events like this; to take on a leadership role that will create followers to our breed. It must be a group effort to win the battle. Plans have been made to take on the competition and to go after our fair share of the industry market place and to put Shorthorns back in their rightful position in the beef cattle industry. NCBA may not seem important to you as a purebred breeder. Other breeds have a contingency of breeders that attend and make statements for the

There will be numerous topics including the type of animal needed for specific market segments of the breed and everything from bull sales to show cattle. The ASA annual meeting will be held in conjunction with this seminar the first week of December 2015. The location and exact time will be determined soon. Trust me, if you are a serious seedstock producer you will want to attend. There will be something for everyone. An Aussies Perspective Well it is safe to say that my first month in America has been a hectic, interesting and awesome experience. So far I have touched down in eight states. So thank you to everybody involved in making the Australia / America Shorthorn exchange program happen. The friends I’ve already made and the amazing hospitality of all my hosts has made me feel very welcome. After a four hour drive to Sydney, three flights and a total of 17.5 hours in the skies I finally arrived in Denver. Keeping in mind that was the first time I had ever been on a plane I was a little bit weary. I met Derek Jungels and the rest of the JSF crew who quickly introduced me to the American way of life. It was awesome to see the scale and dedication shown by exhibitors at the Denver National Western. While the direction some cattle had taken was shocking (club calves) it was also very interesting to see how lucrative the show industry had become. The Pen Shows ability to align with commercial realty was refreshing and something I really enjoyed. From Denver I met with the Lane Family and departed through Kansas to Jay Okla. The Lanes program aims to

produce a moderate cow that excels at calving time. I was able to see some local cattle enterprises, visit a sale barn and spend a day with veterinarian Dr. Richard McCarver. They also took me gigging, and I was lucky enough to catch a sucker. My next destination was Dr. Jim and Beverly Freed’s, Double J and Jeepetta Cattle Company herd. They run around 100 Shorthorn cows on various properties throughout the Chickasha area. Some impressive cattle were present including sire Waukaru Thor 3063. I was also lucky enough to watch the Thunder beat the Timberwolves at nearby Oklahoma City before heading to Turkey Feather Ranch in Ada. From there I travelled with them to Fort Worth for the stock show and met up with WHR Shorthorns. An impressive group of Shorthorn females at Fort Worth made the judging interesting. Montie Soules then picked me up from Fort Worth and we travelled south to NCBA in San Antonio. From cattle I have seen at shows in America I have become concerned the Shorthorn breeds success as show cattle, is shifting attention away from the fundamentals of producing high quality beef efficient-

ly. Spending time with the ASA staff and board members instilled confidence back into me as it is clear positive changes are occurring to ensure Shorthorn cattle remain sought after by commercial cattlemen. The progression of multi-breed EPDs I think is a very important step towards competing commercially as a breed but also as an industry against other animal based protein products. By combining data from objective measurement into a single large database from all breeds the value of EPDs as a selection tool will inevitably be much greater. Shorthorn’s involvement in this is very exciting. Thank you again and I look forward to meeting many more Shorthorn and beef enthusiasts as I travel across North America during the next six months. =

2015 National Western Stock Show, In Memory of Joe Christen
Denver 2015
by Megan Breham
Stock Show honored the operation for twenty-five years of continuous exhibition at the pen show. Throughout the years, Joe Christen, transformed Ka’Ba Ranch in to the largest registered Shorthorn herd in Colorado and was among the top ten breeders in registrations in the United States. Both Joe and Gretta Christen were involved in many organizations promoting Shorthorn cattle. Joe served many years as the president of the Western Shorthorn Association, WyoBraska Shorthorn Association, Weld County Livestock Association, Colorado Cattleman’s Association, and the Colorado Feeders Association. Gretta was very active with the Western Shorthorn Lassies, serving several terms as president. In 1978, Christen was honored by the American Shorthorn Association as a “Builder of the Breed.” Today, the operation continues to raise Shorthorn cattle and is operated by Gretta, son Joseph L. Christen and = daughter Cindy Baumgartner.
Joe Christen Family
Each year, the American Shorthorn Association is humbled to honor a breeder who has extensively contributed to the success of the Shorthorn breed at the National Western Stock Show. This year’s NWSS show was dedicated in memory of Joe Christen, Aurora, Colorado. Joe Christen had an esteemed history within the Shorthorn breed and is deserving of this prestigious honor. National Western Stock Show, In Memory of Joe Christen During the National Western Stock Show Shorthorn Female Show held January 19, 2015, the family of Joe Christen was present to accept honors from the American Shorthorn Association in memory of dedication and commitment to the Shorthorn breed.
Joseph T. Christen was born in 1928 to Swiss immigrants who homesteaded in Aurora, Colorado in 1918. After returning home from three years of service to the United States Navy in 1949, Christen worked alongside his father raising Hereford cattle. In 1952 Joe Christen was united in marriage to Gretta Anderson. In 1956, the first and only purchased registered Shorthorns were integrated into the operation, Ka’Ba Ranch. From this point forward, emphasis was placed on strictly Shorthorn genetics. The National Western Stock Show was an important part of the Ka’Ba Ranch legacy. In 1966, Christen earned top honors in the Shorthorn Car load and Pen of 5 competitions- the beginning of many successful trips to Denver. In 2006, the National Western

=Junior Corner Opportunity is Knocking While on a recent flight home from the National Western Stock Show in Denver I decided to set the livestock magazines aside and read the one that was tucked into the seat in front of me. As I was flipping through the pages, there was an article that sparked my interest, the title saying, “This way up,” Directly under that was the statement, “If you want to climb the ladder, put yourself in opportunity’s way.” I could not agree more with this statement. In the fast paced, crazy world that we live in today, opportunities come and go. So, why not take advantage of every
opportunity that is given to you? As a college student, I get asked similar questions every day. And my answer to these questions seems to always have the same response. Often times, instead of trying new things and taking advantage of opportunity, it is easier to stay in your comfort zone and say, “maybe next time.” However, Andy Rooney summed up this situation perfectly when he said, “Opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.” Now is the prime time to step outside of your comfort zone and take

advantage of the opportunities that are given to you. Whether it be your dream college that is five states away, that superior internship that is hundreds of miles away from your family, or that prestigious sale that you have been working towards for years; take the chance and let the opportunity be rewarding. When the next opportunity comes knocking, ask yourself why not now? =

Board Minutes ASA Board Meeting Minutes September 24 & 25, 2014 Omaha, NE Present: Mike Bennett, President, Mark Gordon, Vice President, Marty Loving, Jim Freed, Ed Kruse, Rick Leone, Robert Alden, Tom Turner and Executive, Montie Soules. Called to Order at 8:00 am Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Montie Soules reviewed the Key Performance indicators with year-end comparisons. Minutes from the August 25, 2014 Board conference call were read and approved. Financial Reports for the fiscal year (FY) were reviewed. Kathleen Prosser and Tom Schwaller CPA were present for the financial presentations. Each segment (ASA, AJSA & Jr. National) was reviewed separately. Junior National activities were discussed in detail; these were the first results of the ASA handling the Jr. National. The Board approved the financial reports for FY 2013/14. Tom Schwaller, ASA auditor explained the financial audit is for 14 months due to the fiscal year change last year. Tom explained the reasoning of making adjustments for obligated services funds held for the next fiscal year and questions regarding the Association’s financial history and activity. Montie Soules and Kathleen Prosser presented budgets for the 3 segments for FY 2014/15. Cash flow predictions were also presented. The budgets were approved as presented. Gwen Crawford presented the Jr. National handbook used for all activity. The Board discussed detailed expectations for the Junior Board, ASA staff and volunteers at the Jr. National, as well as the scope and size of the Jr. National. The Board made a motion to have 2 senior couples act as adult advisors for the Jr. Shorthorn Board in addition to the Jr. Director; one couple to be appointed by the Sr. Board and the other selected by the Jr. Board. The ASA Sr. Board appoints Jim and Bev Freed as advisors to the JR. Board in the motion. Motion passed unanimously; Jim Freed abstained. The Board discussed organizing a new sustainability committee to investigate professional funding and relationships with the Shorthorn Foundation. This committee would provide direction to secure professional funding for all future ASA activities and form a close working relationship with the foundation if they are receptive. A professional fund raiser could become part of ASA to develop an ongoing donor process. A motion was made to form a new sustainability committee to develop fund raising through professional avenues and create a closer working relationship with the Shorthorn Foundation. The ASA Board Executive Committee is to appoint committee members to possibly meet at the North American in November. Motion passed unanimously Promotion Committee: New advertising campaigns, slogans and the new website are in process. Building Sale: The appraisal of the ASA building has been completed and the Board met with the perspective buyers and agents.
72
Discussion ensued regarding the timing of selling the building and how it would affect ASA business. The meeting ended with the understanding that the buyers will send a proposal to the Board by noon tomorrow (Sept. 25), while the Board was still convened in Omaha. After the meeting with perspective buyers discussion continued on the building value and an acceptable price. Discussion of the process of EPDs staying with WHR cattle from registry after January 1, 2015 ruling is put into place. A motion was made to amend the September 2013 motion stating that only WHR breeders will receive EPDs after January 1, 2015. The amendment added is for the process of the registry to have EPDs attached only to cattle registered by a WHR breeder for the lifetime of that animal regardless of membership type after transfer as long as the WHR member registering the animal remains a WHR member. Motion passed unanimously. Jake Alden reported on the GeneSeek activity. The numbers required to formulate Genomic EPDs has been met, with well over 800 50K tests for the testing population. 2600 total tests have been completed at GeneSeek since April 1, 2014 compared to 1800 total tests for the 2 previous years. GeneSeek is providing better service and the percentage of data completed has improved, reaching most expectations. The use of blood cards is making a big difference in the process. When asked about the turn-around time for tests, Jake reported that defects are taking 2 weeks in most cases and parentage is taking a month. Information was reviewed concerning the WHR Restructure Committee. Chairman Mark Gordon explained the goals of the committee and the 2 options the committee had considered. Many positive comments were made with some very good suggestions to take back to the WHR Restructure Committee. It was agreed that this process will take some time and the importance of getting it right. A few Canadian breeders had inquired about a special rate to dual-register their entire herds with the ASA. The Board discussed and made a motion to charge Canadian breeders that wish to dualregister their herds in the ASA registry a special fee of $15 per animal until Dec. 31, 2014. The motion included a minimum of 15 head to receive the special $15 fee. Motion passed unanimously. The By-Laws Committee has worked on reorganizing the election process for ASA Board Members. The options brought to the Board included possible district changes to balance the size or geographically fit together better on the map. The Board discussed a nominating committee and has sincere concerns about how to maintain a fair process while updating the election process to fit the times. The consensus of having a nominating committee was mutually agreed upon, but with different ideas for selecting it. The Board left instructions for the committee to take the ideas and concerns back to committee and to obtain a legal opinion

before representing for approval. Meeting adjourned. Called to order at 8:00am Thursday, September 25, 2014 Locations for future board meetings and Shorthorn U were discussed; the next Board meeting will be in Louisville and the next at the NCBA convention in February, instead of Denver. Shorthorn U may become an every-other-year function or become part of another activity to be determined. Joe Massey, representing Digital Beef presented a new registry system. In his over 2-hour demonstration he showed how userfriendly the system is for breeders online. It contains a complete herd management system inside the registry and has many features and options for both members and association staff. The entire ASA staff attended and afterward Joe made individual presentations to the staff. The ASA Board was impressed with the Digital Beef system and Joe came back to answer questions about mobile phone adaptability, the sustainability and programmers of Digital Beef, time frames, startup costs and contract issues to move in that direction. . A motion was made to give Digital Beef a tentative startup date of Feb. 1, 2015 to download data, pending a contract agreed upon by legal and approved by ASA at the November board meeting. Motion passed unanimously. Montie reported on ASA staff. The board went into executive session. A written review of Montie was prepared and the Board approved a pay increase and will to put together a new employment agreement for him. A formal offer to purchase the ASA building was made by the perspective buyer. The offer was below the appraised value of the building and the Board feels a need to hire a broker to look after ASA interests in selling the building. The board made a motion to hire a broker/agent to represent the ASA in negotiations and possibly listing the ASA building for sale. Motion passed unanimously. Montie was instructed to seek broker options for later review. The future growth and acceptability of the breed in the industry and the need to give breeders direction for breed improvement was discussed. The topic of a symposium type conference with outside experts and Shorthorn breeders determining a direction for the breed was talked about. The staff should pursue such an event next year maybe as a replacement for Shorthorn U. The issue was brought up of a show proving Shorthorn animals that were fraudulently registered. Registration papers had already been pulled and parties involved are on probation with DNA required for future registrations. A concerned group of breeders at the Jr. National asked for consideration of the extra heavy cattle in some classes, indicating to them that the cattle could be out of age. The board discussed the issue. Until there is a scientific way to determine age, the ASA cannot take any action.
Meeting adjourned ASA Board Meeting Minutes November 14, 2014 Louisville, Ky. It was determined that a number of TOC members are switching to WHR in order to have their EPDs published. It was a consensus to wait until March 1 to review how many TOC members have converted to WHR and then determine if and what changes in pricing structures are needed. Report on 50K project for genomic EPDs was given. The ASA has 925 head with DNA 50K for building Genomic EPDs. The data From the Spring North American Genetic Evaluation was being collected and transmitted between the appropriate parties to give Dorian Garrick the information to provide Shorthorn Genomic EPDs. =Tartan Plaid National Lassie Assiciation By: Amanda Gipe McKeith, president
Greetings from sunny California! This month I would like to introduce you to a great group of women who serve on the Board of Directors for the National Shorthorn Lassie Association. I asked each lady to send me a biography, so I could share it with all of you. Many of these ladies served as state, national, or alternate national queens or was a mom of a lassie queen or junior board member and have been greatly involved in the Shorthorn breed. Some of theses women grew up being involved with Shorthorn cattle while others married into the Shorthorn family. One thing rings true for all of us, we have a passion for Shorthorn cattle and the people involved with this great breed and it is our honor and pleasure to help support the young ladies that serve as ambassadors for this great breed as Shorthorn Lassie Queens. Let me begin by introducing myself. I am Amanda Gipe McKeith and I have the pleasure of serving this great organization as President. Currently, I reside in Selma, Calif., with my husband, Russell. I am an Assistant Professor at California State University, Fresno where I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Animal Science and serve as the Graduate Program Coordinator. Having just moved back to California, Russell and I are taking a more active role in my family’s farming and cattle operation (Sunny Day Shorthorns). We raise Shorthorns as well as farm corn, alfalfa, and winter forage. I received my degrees from Merced College (AA), Kansas State University (BS and MS), and the Pennsylvania State University (PhD). I served as the Alternate National Shorthorn Lassie Queen (2002-2003) and on the AJSA Board of Directors (2004-2006). I am looking forward to serving the National Shorthorn Lassie Association this year and if any of you have concerns or suggestions please feel free to contact me. I would like to introduce our Vice President, Lori Moore of Jerseyville, Illinois. Mrs. Moore is married to Ron Moore and is the mother of two daughters, Emily Moore-Adcock (Justin) and Sarah. She is employed at Twin Rivers MRI Center in Alton, Ill. Lori has served as a board member and
76
as an officer on the Tri-County Lassie Association and the Illinois Shorthorn Association. She enjoys spending time with her family in the show barn and being the typical show mom. She grew up raising and showing Horned Herefords, but she has grown to love the red, white, and roan. Lori and her husband, Ron, along with Ron’s family, own and operate Moore Shorthorns. Lori is grateful to be part of an organization that has given her family so much over the years. Our Secretary is Fran Korthaus McCall. She resides in Shelbyville, Ky., with her husband, David, and son, Lane. She is a 5th generation Shorthorn breeder. Fran received her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Western Kentucky University and her Master’s of Science degree from the University of Kentucky. Currently, Fran works for the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation as a Commodity Specialist and Coordinator for the Certified Roadside Farm Market Program. They raise Shorthorns, Red Polls, and commercial cattle. Fran served as the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen from 20052006. Pam Dressen serves at the Treasurer for the National Shorthorn Lassie Association. Pam and her husband, Jim, live in Ellsworth, Wis., on a small beef farm. They have 40 cows that include purebred Shorthorns, ShorthornPlus, and some commercial cows. Pam has been part of the Shorthorn industry her entire life. Along with their two grown children, Brianna and Caleb, we work together as a family raising and exhibiting Shorthorn cattle. As our treasurer, Pam would like to take the time to ask all Lassies to pay the National Lassie dues of $10. Your donation helps supports the expenses incurred by the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen and the National Shorthorn Alternate Queen. The Queens represent our beloved Shorthorn breed. Your state organization may send a check for all the members along with a membership list or if your state does not have an organized Lassie association please send your personal dues to: Pam Dressen N4787 515th Street

February 3, 2015 Jungels Shorthorn Farms, Kathryn, ND Auctioneer: Bruce Brooks Sale Management: Aegeter Marketing Services, LLC by: Darryl Rahn
A weekend snow storm across the Midwest could not keep a large crowd from gathering at the Jungels Ranch to view and select bulls in this year's sale. As well as the big crowd, there was a lot of action during the sale on the phones and from a large number of buyers signed up on the internet. The offering in this year's sale was of the highest quality which was evident in the active bidding throughout the snappy sale. Congratulations to Derek and his crew for presenting another set of extremely well accepted herd sire prospects. $30,000 - Lot 21 - PB Bull - JSF Sensation 82B - A roan, polled, March 23, 2014 son of Leveldale Righteous 084 ET and out of JSF Marvel 6S. GeneSeek Updates for Genomic Advances in Beef Production Ryan Ruppert, MS, MBA GeneSeek Sales Director DNA profiling is a remarkable new tool for cattle producers. Ten years ago, producers were mainly limited to micro-satellite-based parentage, which relied on crude gels and visual interpretation. Today, sophisticated biochips can detect thousands of genetic markers. New DNA tests you are used to hearing about detect Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). To find these small genetic variations for DNA profiles and parentage, we use the Sequenom Mass Array or the Illumina iScan. They are highly automated, and output data displays via sophisticated computers. However, the new biochips do detect some types of DNA defects as well as older technology. That is not the case for Tibial Hemimelia (TH) and Digital Subluxation (DS), two genetic health issues of interest to Shorthorn breeders. TH and DS defects feature a string of gene deletions that are too long for efficient detection by SNP technology. For these tests, we use older systems that require a trained person to visually assess the results. Usually, the visual results are a distinct series of black and white bands on a readout. But in rare cases, what should be a black or white mark is instead a grey band. Then an actual human being looks carefully at the results to make an interpretation. How faint is the grey? Recently, we misinterpreted such a test. We looked at the pale grey line and indicated an animal was a DS carrier when instead we should have called the test a No Result (NR). After looking into the results, and rerunning the tests on a newer platform, we determined the first test was wrong. This has warranted a change in change our procedures for DS testing for Shorthorn. In the past we used the LICOR system for these, which uses older gel-based and infrared technology. These tests have been around a long time and are affordable and robust. With this platform we had an 88% success rate, leaving about 12% as No Results. This metric was not where we needed it to be. So we re-evaluated this DS test with the inventor, Dr. Jon Beever, on a newer platform, the Applied BioSciences (ABI ) sequencer. Moving onto the ABI, our ability to get a correct read the first time increased dramatically to a nearly 99%, and we are rerunning all the DS test previously ran on LICOR with the ABI. We realize that all this technology discussion may be difficult to sort out. In this one case, we made a wrong first call on an animal with the LICOR and because of a call from the breeder; we were able to correct it using the ABI. We have now moved ASA tests for DS onto the more sensitive ABI platform. With this machine we get a 99% first-time success reading. Human error and nuanced technology can combine for other rare mistakes. A case of this occurred when we were running two batches of TH tests. One test panel was reversed. Normally our controls would catch these but they did not catch this human error. Ultimately the errors were identified, the tests re-run and the customers were notified
of the proper results. In each case we have apologized for the errors, as we recognize that even with difficult tests, our customers are counting on us to deliver a correct result. We have since changed how we handle and double-check these tests. At GeneSeek, we don’t want to make any mistakes, we have a reputation for accurate testing. All our Standard Operating Procedures have built-in controls to eliminate error. We make changes to our SOPs when situations that were not anticipated arise. This includes the use of positive and negative control samples in the DNA plates and on the machines, to double-check the integrity of samples. We are constantly searching for the most effective tools that will provide the most reliable data. GeneSeek is ISO17025 certified by the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation. Our standard operation procedures (SOPs) are followed to assure operational excellence. Still, this is DNA. We operate where biology, with all its vast variety, meets software. And in rare instances, results can be unexpected, as was the case with DS. We knew this was a difficult test to run and prepared using all of our prior knowledge of defect testing to prevent mistakes from happening, but an error slipped through the SOPs and we have since fixed the SOPs to prevent this from happening again. Our lab must receive the right sample, labeled correctly, without cross-contamination. Each day we get thousands of samples of all imaginable (and unimaginable) types of tissues, labeled in all manner of ways (and frequently unlabeled). From these we try to isolate high-quality DNA and feed it into some of the most sophisticated equipment in science. As a breeder, and as a breed association, we ask that you always assess your results – particularly for parentage and defect tests – to ensure that they reasonably conform to expectations from the pedigree. If you ever have reason to question the results, contact your breed association. DNA technology is all around us, from fictional movies to the realities of modern healthcare. Today we can query DNA – the essence of life – for the cost of a quarter tank of gas, from batch of tail hairs. We are not quite where Hollywood dramatics portray the science, but us. But the real capabilities help producers make more confident decisions every day. These days, DNA testing is routine, affordable and a key tool in modern production. But, even as it has grown more accurate, it remains a highly sophisticated, delicate science. The genome is incredibly complex. Its hidden patterns are invisible to all but the most advanced technology. What was state of the art a few years ago will be outdated tomorrow. While perfection is the goal, everyone involved in the process, from the rancher to the breed association and to the laboratory, plays a role in ensuring a quality result. =

Updated Rules & Regulations • Effective January 1, 2015, EPD’s will only be available to Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) members of the American Shorthorn Association. As a reminder, regardless of membership status of owner, an animal registered by a WHR breeder will have access to EPDs for the lifetime of that animal. • All A.I. Sires and Donor Dams are required to have all genetic conditions tested (TH,PHA,DS) and DNA genotype (SeekSire) completed before registration of progeny. In the event that the A.I. sire or Donor Dam is not tested, offspring can be tested for missing tests to complete registration. • The American Shorthorn Association is projected to transition to a new registry system June 1, 2015. • Beginning June 1, 2015, A.I. and E.T. certificates will no longer be required to register cattle. • A.I. Certificates will be optional; owners can determine if their bull will be a certificate or non-certificate bull. Classifying a bull as a non-certificate bull is permanent.
• New Show Rules for 2015-2016 • Cow/Calf Classes will compete for Overall Grand Champion. Cow/Calf Champions will be a division champion. • Regional Show System is still in place • Two National Shows have been established : NWSS and NAILE • No points will be awarded for either show • Three Tier II National Shows have been established; points will count towards exhibitor’s cumulative regional points • Keystone, Pennsylvania • American Royal, Missouri • Fort Worth Stock Show, Texas • Super-Regional Shows accumulate points in respective region • Regional Show Bull & Heifer awards will be given • P.A.C.E. Show System, P.A.C.E. point credits, and All-American Awards no longer exist. • Check-In Policies • Exhibitors will be responsible for providing registration number and birthdate of entries • The Division and Reserve Division Champions will have DNA collected to verify parentage. • Heifers 20 months of age and older, without calf at side, will have a blood sample collected to verify pregnancy • All entries at the Jr. National, Louisville, and Denver will be weighed • All performance data must be submitted to the office before May 31, 2015 to be included in the Fall 2015 North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation. • All ShorthornPlus animals must be registered prior to May 31, 2015 to receive Fall 2015 North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation EPD’s • When sending semen samples to the ASA office for genetic testing, please enclose the sample in cardboard packaging or place the straw in an ink pen to protect your sample during shipping. =
