Attention Juniors - Rule Changes! • Junior members turning 22 in 2018, your Junior membership is good through Dec. 31, 2018. To receive adult membership at a transitional rate, you must complete the application on the back of the expiring junior member letter mailed out in November and return it along with payment to the ASA office by March 1,2019. All memberships converted from junior to adult will become WHR breeders. You are eligible to show at the Junior National in 2018 if you turn 22 prior to July 1, 2018. • The age requirement for Junior Nationals has changed! Junior members 7 years of age are now eligible to show at the Junior National. In order to have A.I. certificates released on a bull, it must be DNA tested as an A.I. Sire. However, if the bull is deceased, the calf can be DNA tested instead.

WHR Breeders 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2018 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2018.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) Committees. Most of the committees are made up of breeders and members volunteering. The committees are extremely important to the total function of the breed and association. The ASA Board studies the committees’ recommendations and considers this input before making decisions whenever possible. Committee involvement is an opportunity for membership to voice their opinions and share ideas for the growth and betterment of our breed and organization. We are in the process of reorganizing the committees and scheduling regular Committee Conference Calls. The date and time of Committee Conference Calls will be on the ASA website calendar. It is vital that you become involved in this process. If you have a particular area of interest and would like to be part of that group, send your name, email and cell number along with the committee(s) you would like to become a part of to emilyv@shorthorn.org. If you have been a committee member in the past please re-enroll for the committee ; we want to maintain an upto-date list of all interested parties. See page 22 for more information on becoming part of a committee. Once added to the committee member list you will receive an email with notifications of the dates, times and agendas for upcoming Committee Conference Calls. You will also receive a second email reminder that will include the call-in number and code for the conference call. The Genetic Evaluation Committee reviews and discusses the breed’s Genetic Evaluation (EPDs) and all performance data that relates to the Genetic Evaluation. This includes Bolt and the One-step process and discussion on possible new EPDs or Indexes that the breed may need to consider. This committee is an essential part of our breed’s image in the industry. The Commercial Acceptance Committee investigates ways to increase commercial acceptance within the industry. Yes, there can be a little overlap with the Genetic Evaluation, Promotion and even the ShorthornPlus/Composite committees as some of the activities will relate to multiple committees. Topics which need to be jointly reviewed will be addressed with a special conference call including joint committees for that agenda. This committee’s primary role is to help Shorthorn gain its rightful place in the beef cattle industry. The ShorthornPlus/Composite Committee investigates how new genetics can be added to the breed. This group reviews the advantages of the ShorthornPlus program and registry while working to increase the acceptance to this area of the breed. Did you know that 23% of total registrations are ShorthornPlus and needs to continue to grow? The Promotion Committee addresses the current and new approaches to promote the breed. They may make suggestions about the website and other communication or advertising methods such as a membership communications link on the ASA website or an advertising piece for the breed. This group touches many different areas that can help grow the breed. The Promotion Committee is the connection for all activities and breed acceptance. Be aware that the Show Committee is elected from those who exhibit at national shows. The Junior Activities Committee is also the Junior Advisors to the Junior Board; they are appointed by the ASA Board and AJSA Board. The 150th Anniversary Celebration Committee is a combination of assigned members and volunteers. All these committees play an integral part of our breed’s success but only if you become engaged and contribute to the process! Please become involved, “WE NEED YOU!” =

Contemporary Grouping: Why, When, and How Proper contemporary groups are just as important to our database and genetic evaluation as proper data collection. Data and contemporary groups build on each other in order to have a strong genetic evaluation. Contemporary groups can be a bit overwhelming, and rightfully so. Knowing which animals belong together in one group or another can take some time to fully grasp. It’s a topic that has been covered many times, but a little refresher course hasn’t ever hurt anyone. Hopefully by sharing some background information and a few helpful hints, your understanding of contemporary grouping will become clearer. Why We Need Contemporary Groups As you know, not all weights and measures are created equally because not all cattle are managed in identical environments. So how do we use data in genetic evaluations when it’s not all collected on an equal playing field? By utilizing proper contemporary groups! Our EPD calculations are driven by comparisons in performance between animals, rather than actual measurements for a trait. Contemporary groups are used to define which animals are to be compared to each other within a herd. By making sure we compare the right animals to each other, we get the best information available to fuel the EPD calculations. Having weights recorded is important, but having the right weights recorded in a contemporary group together is equally necessary.

groups will always be for birth records, since cattle can only be removed from the original contemporary group over time. Every time a new data point is collected, the contemporary group should be examined for animals that might have been treated differently and are no longer fairly compared to the rest of the group. Once an animal is no longer on the same playing field (either advantaged or disadvantaged), they need to be regrouped. If you have a calf that gets really sick between birth and weaning, or if you choose some calves to begin prepping for the show barn, those cattle should be removed from the larger contemporary group. When collecting data such as weaning, yearling, or ultrasound, the date of data collection also dictates contemporary groups. All the calves that need to be in the same weaning contemporary group need to have their weaning weights taken on the same day. If there are multiple weighing days, then you will have multiple contemporary groups. How to Build Your Contemporary Groups There are some rules you will want to follow when putting your cattle into the proper contemporary groups. The sex

When to Worry with Contemporary Groups I commonly get asked when in the production cycle to start paying attention to contemporary groups. The answer is the day your first calf is born, and every time you collect a new piece of data in your herd. Contemporary groups start when birth records are recorded. It is important to ensure that you have your calves grouped correctly at birth, because all subsequent contemporary groups are based off the initial birth groups. The largest contemporary 10

of calf is a major factor, always sorting heifers and bulls into their own groups at birth, and then into heifers, steers, and bulls for any data collected from weaning onward. Grouping calves by calving season is also important. Most breeders calve in smaller windows and don’t have to worry too much with season. However, if you don’t have a tight calving season, it is recommended to group your birth contemporaries into 90-day windows to get a fair comparison. Obviously, management and location are a major factor. If you run cows on multiple ranches, then you will have contemporary groups for each ranch. Fortunately, Digital Beef does a pretty good job of covering some of these bases for you. If you need to manually put cattle into different groups, there are functions available to help you do so, such as the “Season” (birth recording) and “Mgmt” (Weaning) options when recording data. As always, we want to help you if you have any questions with your contemporary groups. Not only does having them done correctly benefit you, but also the rest of the breed as we continue to build our database. A stronger database is the foundation for better EPD calculations. =

How to Dispose of Bulls We are quickly approaching the middle of the year, so assessments should be submitted by now. However, as we all know, assessments only apply to the females in your herd. I am here to show you how to remove culled males from your account.

1. First, you will need to click “View” under “My Account” to get to your profile. 2. Once here, “Herd” should be highlighted in green. Next, click “All” underneath “Herd”. Here you will see all of your animals- males and females, Shorthorn Plus and Purebred. 3. Each animal has a row of click-able buttons. To dispose of one, click the “Dispose” button. Once you do so, it should read “Queued”.

4. The final step to disposing of animals is to look back to the left-hand menu. Click “Herd Mgmt” and then “Update Status”. This page will contain any animals that you have already chosen to dispose of. 5. You will mark the appropriate disposal code on each one, then click “Make Updates”. =

Anna Miller is a junior at Oklahoma State University where she is studying Agricultural Communications and Animal Science. She grew up in the small town of Linden, California, raising purebred Red Angus cattle with her family. Anna has always had a passion for the agricultural industries, and an interest in international culture has motivated her to study animal science abroad in Dublin, Ireland, for a semester. She is active throughout the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural

Calling all Shorthorn Lassie Queens! With the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference rapidly approaching, we are inviting you to attend. This is a very large event for not only the Junior Board of Director but the National Shorthorn Lassie Queens as well. There are many ways for state Shorthorn Lassie Queens to be involved. Helping with passing out awards in the ring, helping with the Award Ceremony, and assisting with the Lassie Tea. Also, throughout the week the National Shorthorn Lassie Queens will host the Lassie 101. This is designed for young ladies ages 13-21 who would like to potentially be the state Lassie Queen or run for National Lassie Queen in the future. Lassie 101 creates a mentorship between past Queens and prospective Lassies. Current National Queens will help teach the basics such as proper costume attire, how to escort classes into the ring, secrets to help keep the crown

Junior Board Candidates Gabriella Leone is a senior at Fowler High School. After graduation, she plans on attending Kansas State University to obtain a degree in Animal Science and Industry with a minor in Feed Nutrition. Gabriella is the daughter of Rick and Trish Leone of Fowler, Colorado. Gabriella has been involved with her family Shorthorn herd, Peak View Ranch, for many years. She has learned many skills from helping on the ranch and helping her dad at Peak View Animal Hospital. Gabriella was an active participant in many activities at Fowler High School while also maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She was involved with National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, 4-H, Otero County livestock judging, varsity golf, varsity volleyball, and more. She is also the valedictorian. “I would like to be on the board for multiple reasons,” Gabriella said. “The relationships I could make with fellow board members and junior members in the Shorthorn breed would be life changing.” Kendall Nelson is currently attending Joliet Junior College. After completing his associates, he plans to attend a 4-year university to obtain a degree in Agribusiness. Kendall is the son of Philip and Carmen Nelson of Seneca, Illinois. Kendall has spent the last 11 years showing cattle and has exhibited Shorthorns at many national shows. Kendall is currently a member of the Joliet Junior College livestock judging team and student agriculture association. Before attending college, he was active in FFA serving in numerous officer positions. He received his state FFA degree and American FFA degree. He 32

also was a member of his local 4-H club and served as president for two years. “Leadership is a key component to any organization,” Kendall said. “I believe I am qualified for this position and would love to better my connections in a breed that has made an impact on me. I want to help make an impact for the younger generation.” Lexi Wetzel is currently a freshman at South Dakota State University, studying Animal Science with a minor in Agricultural Business. Lexi is the daughter of Mike and Lisa Wetzel of Faribault, Minnesota. Lexi showed her first Shorthorn when she was in third grade and instantly knew she wanted to continue showing Shorthorn cattle. She still has one of the first cows she purchased and she continues to produce offspring that bring home banners. During high school Lexi was active in both 4-H and FFA. She was on the livestock judging team and competed at National 4-H and FFA livestock judging contests. Her team also was third place at the American Royal 4-H livestock judging contest. While at SDSU she was a member of the Jackrabbit Memorial Show Committee. “After attending leadership conferences, I have realized it takes all kinds of different leadership qualities to complete a team,” Lexi said. “I have learned that at times not everyone is going to agree but you must keep an open mind and it will work out in the end.” Macy Bakenhus is currently attending the University of NebraskaLincoln to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education in May 2020. Macy is the daughter of Ward and Shay Bakenhus of Columbus, Nebraska. Macy has shown and raised many Shorthorns over the years. Throughout the years she has worked to improve her herd and her

love for agriculture has grown. While in high school Macy was active in FFA, competing in speech contests, attending the state leadership conference, and serving as member of the state FFA Honor Choir. She attended the FBLA National Fall Leadership Conference all four years of high school. She was all a Varsity cheerleader during high school. “Ever since I was a little munchkin I have looked up to the junior board for the ways to act and handle myself in the ring and in life,” Macy said. “As I have gotten older I have found myself wanting to be a bigger part of the junior association.” Morgan Wise is currently a freshman at Kansas State University studying Human Development and Family Services. Morgan is the daughter of Charles and Heidi Anderson of Topeka, Kansas. Morgan may be newer to showing but is passionate about the Shorthorn breed and the breeding decisions she is making to grow her herd. Morgan is currently an active member of the Shorthorn, Angus and Limousin Junior Associations. She currently serves as the secretary of Kansas Junior Shorthorn Association. She is a volunteer for Let’s Help Topeka and Arts Community Topeka. She has also attended several breed association leadership conferences. “Misconception of the cattle industry is as an all-time high,” Morgan said. “We are all ambassadors. What we learn from the mentors and friends in these junior programs we take back into our communities with us.” =

= Junior Corner A Flashback to the Past As we begin to celebrate 50 years of Shorthorn Junior Nationals we take a step back and look at how far we have come. The traditions that have been established the breeders who have played a vital role in our breed, and how we have improved our genetics. As we look at the old pictures from Jr. Nationals past and see the changes from how we have out grown some fairgrounds where we have held Jr. Nationals before and have added new or gotten rid of some contests. Now, we are bringing back the past and bringing some of those old contests back! Remember when we had a state booth? Well, its back but in a different way. Remember when we had the adult cook-off contest? Well we have basically combined the two for one event! The State Cook-Off Contest! Have a fun time at our carnival and try each states food samples and play the carnival games. It’s a great way to have some fun while taking a break from working with cattle all day long. Remember when we had the quiz that was on paper and we had to answer questions about Shorthorns? It’s coming back as well but this

time it’s called the Cattleman’s Written Quiz! Juniors you better start catching up on your Shorthorn facts! The brand new contest that we are doing for the 2018 National Junior Shorthorn Show is the 5K Run/Walk. You better start practicing now to be prepared by June! As we are bringing back contests from the past and even including new ones, there are things that haven’t changed like the red coats. Their vibrant color is seen from a distance. But the meaning behind it has stayed the same the only thing that has really changed is how many terms are served and the process. But besides that the tradition has not changed. Nine juniors are still selected to serve and to represent the breed in a positive manner. Each past Junior Board member will explain the years go by fast. One second you are relieved because you got it, the next you are taking your coat off for the last time. Giving it to someone who you were just in his or her shoes a few years ago. As I have reached the single digits on putting my coat on, these three years have definitely flown by and a lot of

changes have been made. But we are still promoting the breed and preparing Junior Nationals for the juniors. We do it all for the kids. Because each one of the Junior Board Members, past, present, and future were the kids leaning against the railing by the show arena watching the red coats. We were all one. = News & Notes Evans Shorthorns Honored as Progressive Breeder. Evans Family Cattle began with Katrina Rains of Rotan, Texas and Clay Evans of Floydada, Texas. Both grew up in farm families with cotton and cattle. Ms Evans had an extensive Shorthorn background from raising Shorthorns to exhibiting across Texas and at several junior nationals. She was very involved in the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association as a youth and presently serves as a director of the Texas Shorthorn Association. The Evans Family Cattle herd has been built around show heifers for their children - Mackenlee and Creed. They have sought top genetics and selected for sound structure and correctness as well as eye appeal. They utilize artificial insemination as well as running a high quality bull for natural service. Like many Shorthorn firms, they also raise ShorthornPlus animals. The family has been supportive of open Shorthorn shows in Lubbock, Amarillo and Fort Worth, as well as Mackenlee and Creed showing in junior shows. Both children are involved in the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association and exhibited at their first junior national Shorthorn show in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the summer of 2017. The firm sells show heifers to other junior exhibitors as well as bulls to commercial cattlemen. That summer, he, wife Diane, and daughters Sharon and Shelly, attended their first junior show at the state Shorthorn show

She, husband Andrew, and children Ethan and Ellie, reside in Rockwall. Sharon McSpadden is a kindergarten teacher at Holliday Elementary. She and husband Scott, with sons Seth and Sam, head up Springer Shorthorns West. The herd numbers around 40 cows. The firm uses artificial insemination to utilize top sires and has one herd sire, LDF Mr. Dandy, who sired grandson Sam’s division champion at Fort Worth in 2017. Their main focus is to produce show heifers that perform in the ring but go on to be great breeding cows. =
