=Junior Corner Life of a Red Coat The Red Coat is one of the most pristine honors a junior member can get. For many people it is a dream of a lifetime while after the crazy week of Junior Nationals and campaigning is over and it’s time for the current board members to retire their jackets and to hand them down to the new ones who will take their place. The nerves and excitement await. Many will fight for the Red Coat but only a few will get it. That Red Coat that has been handed down to you from past board members to present several times. It holds the passion for the breed, the many memories from shows to sales and everything else in-between, and the countless laughs. If it could talk it would tell you all about the fun times and all of the memories including all of the different states its been to. The Red Coat is known world wide because of its vibrant color that everyone knows it belongs to the American Shorthorn
16
Association. No matter where it is worn at in the middle of the ring with green shavings or in a conference room it stands out. Even though the people change that wear it, but the coat still symbolizes for the same thing that it always has. Many kids will watch the Red Coats from ringside and will see them throughout the week of Junior Nationals. They set the bar high and many of them are the role models for all of the younger kids and then later on in life when those little kids become older and are handed that Red Coat and now are the ones in the ring helping the younger kids who will soon be the ones in the Red Coats. Once you wear a Red Coat you become part of a much bigger family. When you just get done with a show and you leave then you start to miss them and start counting down the days until the next event.

To some people the most greatest achievement in there life is once they put on that Red Coat for some people they have waited since the age of nine for it to be handed to them. Then once they put the coat on for the first time during the banquet at Junior Nationals and then get to stay after its all over to take pictures and then the next morning you wake up literary at the crack of dawn to make sure you have your calves washed and ready before you head to the ring dressed and ready to-go because you don’t know when you will get a break because it is Day 1 of officially being on the American Shorthorn = Association Junior Board.

Transferring Bred Females There is a new policy that all bred females being transferred at ASA must have all the breeding information including name and registration number of sires, type of service, date of service and/or pasture exposure dates to and from, at the time the bred female is transferred to a new owner.
Miscellaneous Information • Effective March 1, 2016, DNA sent to the office without complete paperwork will incur an additional charge. • Effective January 1, 2015, EPD’s will only be available to Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) members of the American Shorthorn Association. As a reminder, regardless of membership status of owner, an animal registered by a WHR breeder will have access to EPDs for the lifetime of that animal. • All A.I. Sires and Donor Dams are required to have all genetic conditions tested (TH, PHA, DS) and DNA genotype (SeekSire) completed before registration of progeny.

=An Aussies Perspective I have spent some time in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria since my previous article. After my time at Dunbeacon shorthorns I went and stayed with the Capel family, Bungulla Shorthorns/Merinos. During my stay there I helped them catalogue rams for their Merino ram sale, and their son Angus showed me how to make rope halters. I saw some good bulls and heifers out of the bull Moombi Ooktali. From there I met up with Lonnie Stone to ride around Queensland scanning Brahmans. We spent our first night in Roma, then spent our first day at the Moongool Charolais bull sale. From there we started driving around Queensland: in total we traveled 3500km (2100 miles), scanned over 200 head of Brahman bulls at 22 different studs, plus one Bazadaise stud, a poll Hereford stud, and 40 head of droughtmasters at a saleyard. All of this was done in four days, and I gained a new appreciation for cattle scanners. After my time with Lonnie I got to compete at the Shorthorn Junior Heifer Show in Parkes. Matt Walker fed a BISS Element 79Z heifer for me to show, and we got third in the class. Aside from the showing, they also have a few team events for the kids to compete in. We had a marketing competition—my group had to come up with an alternative use for a bag of potato chips—a synchronized dance off, and an egg run that involved honey, flower, water, and jellybeans. There was also junior judging, halter-making, meat identification, and a presentation by John Wright of Coota Park Blue-E. After the heifer show, Lane Evans helped get me from Parkes to the Sydney airport so I could fly up to Cairns. While in Cairns I did a three day live-aboard trip with Cairns Dive Centre. I stayed on a houseboat with about 30 other travelers/backpackers for three days on the Great Barrier Reef where I got to go snorkeling in six different spots in two differ-
ent spots of the reef, and I did an introductory dive with a PADI Divemaster to see the reef from a different perspective. On the boat I met three Canadian backpackers that I met up with again on land prior to leaving Cairns for pizza at a pub. From Cairns I flew down to Melbourne where I met up with Kate McKay to ride out to Ballarat where her husband Scott and his family run Marschay Shorthorns. My timing worked out well because I got to be involved with the Geelong Steer Competition. Various producers from around the Geelong area brought in their fed steers and heifers to be judged on the hoof and hook. A black limo cross heifer won the competition with a murray grey heifer taking second. Scott had some very thick cattle, and tends to do very well in carcass competitions. Shortly after the steer competition the Royal Geelong Show was on. Scott and I took two bulls and one heifer to the show, and had some success with one bull standing third in his class. My next stop was Eloora Shorthorns. My first day there they were shearing their rams, so I helped with flipping them over for the shearer. They have a grandson, James, who is very keen on Shorthorn cattle. He was especially interested in the American genetics—I think because he’s researched nearly every pedigree in Australia already. The Baker females were some of the nicer young cows on the farm, and there was a Baker bull that Ray reckons looks just like Baker did as a rising two-year-old. After Eloora I spent a few days at Tataila Shorthorns with Richard Ham and family. Richard also has a couple grandkids, Tristan and Eliza, that are very keen on shorthorn cattle—Tristan even told his grandmother Cheryl “grandma, can you tell Dad to get rid of his Angus so we can just have Shorthorns?” To do something a bit different, Cheryl took me out on a paddle-steamer on the
Zachary Australian Knutson Shorthorn Ambassador
Murray River. The next stop was Broome Shorthorns, the Leeds family. I stayed with David, who was a previous ambassador. Gillian’s Shorthorns were very large, but David’s Angus were more moderate. I was only with them for about 24 hours before Luke Collins came and picked me up to go to Yanco Agricultural High School (YAHS). YAHS is a year 7-12 boarding school that also has an on-site farm consisting of Shorthorns, Limousin, sheep, swine, chickens, and equine. During my time at Yanco I shadowed the teachers, and I spoke to four classes about the things I’ve seen in Australia and some of the differences from America. Luke and I also took a weekend drive to Condobolin to visit Malleevale Shorthorns. During my week on campus, I rode with the students to the Albury show. There is both a hoof/hook competition and a breeding show put together in a two day event. YAHS took the top three positions in the heavyweight division on the hoof, and three of the top four positions in the heavyweights on the hook. I did a basic fitting/clipping demonstration on one of their show bulls, then they let me show him and we got Reserve Champion Bull. After Yanco I came to Outback Shorthorns in Culcairn, where I am currently writing this article. I’m still thoroughly enjoying the experiences, and all of the new friends I am meeting along the way. I am planning on spending the last month of my journey in South Australia, and I look forward to all of the adventures ahead! =
