STATEMENT FROM ASA BOARD OF DIRECTORS These are exciting times in the beef industry and for the Shorthorn breed. The first month of the fall sale season has seen excellent results and continued demand for our Shorthorn product. Many changes have occurred at the ASA over the last several years with the goal of positioning and strengthening the breed for continued acceptance and growth in the future. Previously in the Shorthorn Country, membership was notified that the ASA Board of Directors was approached about selling the association headquarters. The decision was made to pursue this opportunity and list the building for sale. At this time the ASA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the building was officially sold on October 1, 2015. The board felt due to the age of the building and continued maintenance issues now and in the future that this was the right decision for the long-term sustainability of the association. After much deliberation and investigation the Board of Directors are excited to announce that the association will be moving to the Kansas City area. Kansas City has deep ties in the industry and has long been synonymous with the beef cattle industry and agribusiness. This location will also serve as a more central location for all membership. This move will position the Shorthorn breed to be in the hub of the related beef industry infrastructure. The Association will be leasing offices in Kansas City at this time. The funds from the sale of the building will be held in a separate account specifically set aside as a building fund to purchase or construct a building in the future. The sale of the Omaha office, allowed the ASA to recapture the cost of the remodel done in 2011. The staff at the ASA office will continue to provide service through this transitional period. Sincerely, American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors Contact information for ASA office as of November 20, 2015 in Kansas City New Address: American Shorthorn Association, 7607 NW Prairie View Road, Platte Woods, MO 64151 Phone: The same phone number and FAX numbers will work to reach the ASA office after November 20, 2015. = Beef Business Great State Feedout Summary The sixth installment of the American Shorthorn Association’s Great State Feedout (GSF) is in the books and once again showcased that Shorthorn genetics can excel in a feedlot setting. Profit was hard to find at closeout time with higher than anticipated feed costs and record feeder calf prices in the fall. This is only the second time since the start of the GSF that retained ownership was not more profitable than selling the calves at weaning. Seven different operations placed 206 steers and 11 heifers on feed at the TriCounty Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) Feedlots in Lewis, Iowa. Thank you to the following operations for your continued support of the GSF – Ashland Farm Shorthorns, Bowman Superior Genetics, Galbreath Farms, JT Moreland Farms, Kaper Cattle Company, Peak View Ranch and Waukaru Farms.

Jake director of Alden member services

The cattle performed relatively well given the Iowa winter posting an average daily of 3.22 lbs. per day with an average feed to gain of 6.8. The cattle entered the feedlot averaging 682 lbs. and were harvested at an average weight of 1,231 pounds. On the rail the cattle had an average hot carcass weight of 758 pounds, with an average dressing percentage was 61.5%. On the rail the cattle were 62% low choice or better with an average marbling score of a Small 30, with two steers grading prime. The cattle were marketed with an average back fat of .48 inches, the current national average is .61 inches of fat. The average Rib-eye area for the calves was 12.76 sq. in., which averaged 1.69 REA/CWT. The average USDA Yield Grade was 2.5 and 45% of the calves were stamped Yield Grade 1 or 2 by the grader. Minimizing discounts is key anytime

when feeding cattle this group was able to avoid most major discounts only 14 head or 6% of the cattle were stamped YG 4 by the grader. The industry is currently averaging 20-25% YG 4’s. All cattle fed through the TCSCF are disposition scored through the chute every time and posted an average disposition score of 1.5 (scale of 1-6). TCSCF research shows that cattle who score 3 or higher average a loss of $62/head in the feedlot. Only four head out of the 217 head had an average disposition score of 3 or higher. A big thank you, once again to all of the consignors for sending another great set of calves to Iowa! If you are interested in consigning calves in the future please contact me to set up a delivery date. We currently have a delivery date set up for the end of November with additional dates available if needed. =

=Junior Corner I am writing this article only a few days after an extremely successful Keystone. I knew I wanted to write about what I am grateful for in life. Yet, while I sit here and ponder, I am happy we were successful, however; I am so grateful for the time I got to spend with my “Shorthorn family”. The people and the memories mean more to me than any banner I could ever win. On my 8th birthday, I asked my parents for a heifer to show. They took me to Trennepohl Farms, and I picked out the cutest calf I had ever seen. Man was I forever grateful for that heifer. Even to this day, she still walks up and lets me rub on her. Reflecting back to that day my parents and I bought that heifer, I don’t think any of us knew that what they were actually buying me was more than a show heifer. It evolved into my passion for the livestock industry, many life lessons, a second family and my best friend to this day. I don’t know what my life would be

like today without the livestock industry. Thanks to this industry, I have grown to be the person I am today and been given the chance to travel the country. The Shorthorn breed in my opinion has the best people. Every person I meet seems to genuinely care about the breed and the juniors. I am grateful that I was raised in the livestock industry, and in a family that believes in hard work and helping me to achieve my goals. My family works together to achieve goals together. I am very grateful that my family shares the same passions I do, and spends its family time in the barn. At the 2014 Junior Nationals, I was honored being elected to the AJSA Board of Directors. I am very grateful that my breed trusts me to guide its juniors and promote the breed as a whole. I would like to speak for all nine of the board members and say that we are extremely appreciative for all the support given to us in all forms. It

Purchased by MacLamore Farms of Bradley, Okla. $18,000 - Lot 2 - Open Heifer - AA KANE Lady Reward 613C ET - A rwm, polled, February 10, 2015 daughter of SULL Red Reward 9321 and out of AA Lady Cornerstone 1J. When choosing Lot 1 for this sale, this top prospect could not have been far behind in the selection. This heifer has a great rib shape to go with natural thickness from end to end. When she stops, she just has that great show look. A top show heifer in the making. Purchased by Hirschfeld Livestock of Benedict, Neb.

$18,000 - Lot 7 - Open Heifer KOLT DWE Foxxy Splash 00 ET - A roan, polled, April 15, 2015 daughter of SULL Red Reward 9321 and out of K-Kim Foxxy 29S. Another of the top notch Red Reward daughters in this sale. To make it better, her dam, Foxxy 29S has long been a leading donor in this program and she hit again here. This heifer just looks the part. She has the extra bone and a great maternal look that will make her a leader in her new program. Purchased by Tejlor Strope of O'Neill, Neb. $12,000 - Lot 12 - Open Heifer KOLT-HOB Kevin 242 ET - A roan, horned, April 25, 2015 daughter of WHR Sonny 8114 ET and out of SULL Carly's Image ET. cannot go without recognition of all the hard work that Gwen does for this breed and us as a junior board. Overall, I’m humbled to be a part of the cattle industry and the Shorthorn breed. This year’s holiday season when someone asks you what you’re thankful for, you don’t have to just give them the basic answer of family and friends but think about what you have been given in this world of life. Think about what you have been blessed with because of the opportunities you have been awarded. Also, let the people that you are grateful for know how much they mean to you. I challenge you everyday to embrace the opportunities, envelop yourself with happiness, and cherish ALL of the memories! =

A flush mate to the good Lot 7 heifer, this one can hold her own with any of them. She has a massive rib shape, the bone and style to go with a color pattern that will get her noticed anywhere she goes. She will be a top show heifer and then a great brood cow that will be the mother of the right kind. Purchased by Eric Moore of Jerusalem, Ohio. =

= Intent to Run Board Members Announce Intent to Run James Freed, MD - I was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma in November 1944, but lived all my childhood life in Oklahoma City. A t t e n d e d O k l a h o m a Christian College where I majored in Pre-Med. Attended University of Oklahoma Medical School and graduated in 1970. Did a pediatric internship and residency at Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City, and served as the Chief Pediatric Resident the last year, 1973. Then went to the Air Force in Clovis New Mexico, where I was a Major and Pediatrician for two years. Started practice in 1975 in Chickasha, Oklahoma, where I have practiced in the same group, Southern Plains Medical Center for 40 years. Have been President of that organization in the past and now serving as the Medical director and head of the Pediatric Department. This is a multi-specialty group practice of about 30 providers. Married Beverly Gleason in 1967, having met her at Oklahoma Christian College, where she majored in Elementary Education. She taught for several years while I was in training and after our children graduated from high school. She now serves as our herdsperson. We have two children, Janet Strate who lives in Enid, Oklahoma and is in Administration at the Vo-Tech School, and Jerry Freed who is a Pediatrician in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Janet is married to Jim Strate Jr who works for Koch Industries and also is an auctioneer and they also have a herd of cattle. They have two boys, Justin--banker and Jarred who is in college at this time. Jerry's wife, Carmen is a CPA and they have two children, Vail and Vann who attend Jenks Public Schools. We attend Blanchard Church of Christ, where I teach Bible Class and preach from time to time. We have developed our herd of Shorthorns from when our children, Janet and Jerry (where Double J Ranch comes from) showed Shorthorn heifers and steers while in 4H and FFA. Both of them were very successful in their show careers and it was a true family adventure. After they left the home we continued to grow the herd and

24

continued to show in the open shows. Later, Beverly started her own herd, Jeepetta Cattle Company. We now have around 100 mother cows between the two herds and have an annual production sale, Shorthorn 500, in October of each year. We also consign to several other state and regional sales. I have served as President of the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association for many years, and am currently in that position. I served previously for seven years on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors back in the late 1980's and was Vice President for two years and President for 1 year. Bev and I were chosen as Builders of the Breed in the past and just this last year chosen as Volunteers of the Year for the Junior Board, for which Bev and I serve as advisors. I have been on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors for three years now in this current term, and would look forward to serving another three years if chosen. Have served as Chairman of the Finance Committee for the last three years and also on the Junior Advisory Board. Ed Kruse - It has been a pleasure serving on the Board of the A m e r i c a n S h o r t h o r n Association for the past three years, and it is my intention to run for another three year term. I am a fourth generation livestock producer in Nebraska and my involvement with Shorthorn cattle began in the 1950’s with a Shorthorn heifer as my first 4-H project. My wife, Jamie, and I currently run a Shorthorn Plus herd in the extreme Southwestern corner of the Nebraska Panhandle. Our cows are Shorthorn Angus composites that are run under commercial conditions and all of our cattle are marketed commercially with an emphasis on selling commercial replacement heifers. Keeping the cattle registered with the Association in our minds is a plus and financially a bargain. With our registration we get records, performance data calculated and EPD’s to assist us with selection and herd improvement, and now with the new registration system at the Association, we can save approximately

shorthorn country = november 2015

$300.00 per year with the use of the herd management software that comes free with our membership. Our cattle are proof that Shorthorn influence cattle can be and are commercially acceptable, with our calves and commercial replacement heifers topping the market on several occasions. In our opinion really good, profitable, and phenotypically pleasing cattle are attainable through sound management and breeding practices with a strong use of performance selection criteria, including growth traits as well as reproductive traits. My personal connections with the Breed run deep. I served on the Board of the first American Junior Shorthorn Association and served as its third President. Jamie, a native Californian, grew up with Shorthorns and served as a delegate to the Junior Association and as California’s Lassie Queen. Our daughter Gina also served on the Junior Association Board and as its President. I look forward to serving an additional three year term and thank you for your support. Hugh Mooney - I would like to announce my intent to serve as a member of the A m e r i c a n S h o r t h o r n Association Board of Directors. As a very young boy I dreamed of one day owning a cattle ranch. The image of riding the range was based on my love of John Wayne movies and Louis L ’Amour western novels. In seventh grade I came to the realization that I would not graduate High School and own a ranch. This caused me to identify other possible careers. In eighth grade I was lucky enough to enroll in an agriculture course and that is when I decided to become an agriculture teacher. I thought this would allow me to be involved in agriculture and possibly have the chance to have a few cattle. The fall of 1972 was also when I bought my first Shorthorn heifer. At the time I had a few Angus. That Shorthorn heifer was so docile that I was sold. Every dollar that I could earn working or selling cattle I invested back in my herd. By 1978 I had 60 Shorthorn cows. I was honored to receive the American Farmer Degree.

While in college and a member of the livestock judging team I had the opportunity to learn how I could best improve my herd. In 1990 while in Denver with the judging team I bought a bull in the sale. This was a big investment for me and truly changed my herd. I also discovered that I needed to concentrate more on quality and less on quantity. Moving forward I studied pedigrees, sale reports and the Shorthorn Country Magazine to expand my knowledge of the breed. As the use of EPD’s became available I attempted to understand their value. Today I am one of those people who enjoy studying the online data. This new system has been intriguing to compare the across breed EPDs. I look forward to the “Impact” conference and the opportunity for us to create a vision to move forward. I was a local FFA Advisor for twenty three years. Fifteen of those years I served as the agriculture department chair at Galt High School. This program had six agriculture teachers. During this time the program was

selected as the Western Region Outstanding Program. I served on the board of the California Agricultural Teachers Association and a term as president. I served three years on the board of directors of the National Association of Agricultural Educators with more than six thousand members. I now work for the California Department of Education as a Region Supervisor of agriculture education. Since the mid 1980’s I have been a member of the board of directors of the California Shorthorn Breeders Association and served as president several different times for more years than I can remember. In my opinion the most important thing that a board needs to remember is that they were elected to serve the members. On this board that can become a challenge given that policy decisions that are in the best interest of the breed may not benefit the director’s current business model. That is why we attempt to elect people of integrity to the board and must trust them to do the right thing. While participating on

ASA committee conference calls, often at 5:00 a.m., Pacific time, you can truly learn about issues that members are concerned about. Regardless of the issue there will be differences of opinion. The key to a high functioning board is to consider different opinions and make the decisions that are in the best interest of the breed. Members want this process to be as transparent as possible. It has been refreshing to see the increased level of communication and transparency of the decision making process at the ASA. Before making the decision to run I needed to reflect on my ability to fill the needs of the membership. I have never been one to take responsibility lightly. If the members select me to serve them they can be assured that I will take this responsibility seriously and will work tirelessly to do what is best for the Shorthorn Breed. I would enjoy discussing the Shorthorn Breed with you anytime. =

By: Lori Moore, National Lassie Association Vice Preseident I hope this article finds everyone safely through harvest and back in the show barn preparing for the “Greatest Show on Earth” aka….the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). I love this time of year with harvest, sweatshirts, bonfires, fall calves and production sales. It’s exciting to anticipate the “Great” Shorthorn show at the NAILE but also to start planning for next year with fall calving and production sales. Along with this excitement comes the thrill of crowning a new National and Alternate Lassie Queen. I want to invite all ladies involved in the Shorthorn breed to join the fun and excitement at the NAILE. This year we have three very qualified candidates that will be competing for the title of National and Alternate Lassie Queen. The Lassie Queens and candidates have a very busy but rewarding schedule as they start the weekend off with the Junior ShorthornPlus Show at 8:00

a.m. on Saturday, November 14th. The excitement will continue on Sunday, November 15th with the Junior Shorthorn Heifer Show at 8 a.m. followed by the Open ShorthornPlus Show at 1:00 p.m. As a result of the Open Shorthorn show moving to Tuesday the National Lassie Association Annual meeting will be held on Monday, November 16th at 9 a.m. Please plan to attend the National Lassie Annual meeting for the latest updates on upcoming Lassie activities and the opportunity to meet the Lassie Queens and candidates. Lassie Queen candidate interviews will start at 10 a.m. The National Lassie board, National and Alternate Queens and Lassie candidates will conclude the morning with lunch at a favorite Louisville restaurant. The National Lassie board will hold their Silent Auction on Monday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

=News & Notes Gruver Shorthorn Breeder Honored at Show. By Mary Bass, Texas Shorthorn Association Publicity Officer

Pictured are Bud and Brenda Dahl Hopkins, Gruver Texas; Robert and Suellen Dahl; Darci Cash, Fay, Oklahoma, National Shorthorn Lassie Queen; Hunter Hopkins, Gruver, Texas; and Scot Dahl, Guymon, Oklahoma.

The South Central Regional Shorthorn Show was dedicated to Robert Dahl, Palo Acre Farms, Gruver, Texas. The show was held Sunday, September 20, at the Tri-State Fair, Amarillo, Texas. Texas is in “Region 4: South Central” of the American Shorthorn Association and includes Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. The Shorthorn herd at Palo Acre Farms began in 1968 with the purchase

of a bull and four females. Dahl practiced strict culling for quality and performance. A very progressive breeder, Dahl began using a Dual Purpose Shorthorn bull, Spiro, when the American Shorthorn association opened the herd book to Milking Shorthorns. He introduced select Irish bloodlines into the herd with AF Deerpark Dividend 932 and Ballyart Advancer, with Dividend Guinness used artificially. He and 3 other Texas

breeders purchased the first full Irish Shorthorn bull to sell in the United States. Palo Acre Farms exhibited cattle in many livestock shows, produced several All-Americans, and marked a large number of the calves to junior exhibitors for show purposes. The herd numbered over 100 registered females in the 1980’s. Today they maintain a small herd of Shorthorns. He was active in the Five State Shorthorn Association and their sale, served on the Texas Shorthorn Association board of directors in the late 1970’s, was state association vicepresident in 1980-82 and president in 1983-84. He served as a voting delegate to the annual meeting of the American Shorthorn Association for many years. He helped classify steers at Forth Worth and Houston livestock shows. In 1982, he was named Builder of the Breed by the American Shorthorn Association and is a member of the American Cattle Breeder Hall of Fame, Texas edition. He served as a 4-H and Boy Scout leader and has been a basketball referee. He and wife, Suellen, have been members of the United Methodist Church at Gruver for over 70 years. The Dahls have three children – Wade and wife Angie of Wimberly, Texas; Brenda and husband Bud Hopkinds of Gruver; and Scot of Guymon, Oklahoma. They also have 5 grandchildren and 3 greatgranddaughters. =
