WHR Breeders WHR Assessments for 2020 were sent in November. If you have not received yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2019 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2019.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) = Association Outlook The Importance of our Shorthorn Family

he holiday season is officially in full swing; we should all be thankful for a lot of things in our lives but the most important thing to be thankful for is our loved ones. Family should always be our highest priority, and this is a special time of year to reflect on that. The Shorthorn Breed is the Family Friendly Breed, so our Shorthorn Family may need a little reflection as well. As families gather for the holiday season, please make time to reach out to the Shorthorn Family and make a special effort to welcome Shorthorn folks into the fold and to ensure they feel part of this Shorthorn Family. All the festivities at this time of the year keep everyone extra busy. It becomes easy to be distracted from many areas that have brought the breed to this level. I want to emphasize that the breeders and members are the driving force of our success. The level of success that may be attained can be measured in many different ways. I suggest taking a little time to consider these questions during this festive time: What is important? Is it the biggest gift? Is it the most expensive gift? Is the thought more important? Is being with family the most important? Is it your family’s health? Is visiting someplace warm most important for those of you living in cold climates? Is getting what you want the most important? Answer these questions quietly and to yourself; your priorities will line up pretty fast. Let’s do the same exercise with our

cattle operations: Is having the biggest or heaviest animal the most important? Is having the thickest animal more important? Is it the most correct animal for feet and legs? Is having the tallest or deepest individual the most important? Is it having the champion at a show the most important? Is getting a class winner? Is having a specific BW or BW EPD the most important? Is having the biggest WW or YW EPD the most important? Is having the biggest REA the most important? Is seeing the juniors and many times your children grow through the junior program the most important? Is it having family work together toward a specific goal? Is spending time with other cattle people talking and learning about the business the most important? And then there’s just plain survival important? This is a pretty long list of different options to choose from. I would hope you really have more than one thing that becomes a priority for you and your family. If you take the time to seriously evaluate these options and write down the ones that affect you most personally, you may even have a few to add. The direction of your personal and family goals will fall into place. The goal may not be specific to a single trait or activity, but as you head in the direction of your goal you will start to incorporate many of the questions presented and start prioritizing the important things and bring short and long-term goals into focus. You may be wondering where this is

going. This exercise is to demonstrate how things from various areas of our lives tie together. Just as priorities for the holiday season present themselves and are connected, the priorities in the Shorthorn business are also connected. We all ask ourselves relevant questions, set priorities, make a business plan or holiday list to have success. Just like the holiday season connects to the Shorthorn breed, we are passionate about our family and having the perfect setting and family experience during this time of year. Our Shorthorn family becomes connected to the holiday family. Our breeders’ passion is generally right up there with the passion for family. I wager most of you will have some sort of decoration in your home that relates to the Shorthorn breed showing your passion to extended family and friends. My point is that our love of family and our love of Shorthorn cattle are connected. It is connected through the many special friends and customers we experience because to the involvement in the Shorthorn breed. The relationships we have all made through the Shorthorn breed are very important in our lives; junior or senior. Take the time to reach out to those folks that have had an impact on your Shorthorn passion. In many cases they are really the most important! = Happy Holidays to Everyone from the Shorthorn Staff!

American Royal Show Honoree Larry and Janice Kohlstaedt - Kohlstaedt Farms In 1960, Larry Kohlstaedt, at the age of 18, bought his first two registered Shorthorn cows. At that time, there were several farmers around Larry that owned Shorthorn cattle and his own father, Eldred Kohlstaedt, owned some crossbred Shorthorns. It wasn’t until 1964 that he bought his first registered Shorthorn bull from Leemon Shorthorn Farms at the Polled Congress in Kansas City. Shortly after Larry bought his first two Shorthorn cows, he married his high school sweetheart, Janice Chaney. They started their family, and a daughter, Kelly, was born about a year later. With a little one in tow, Larry and Janice, both just 20 years old, bought their first farm. A few years later, they added Brian to their little family. Brian quickly fell in love with Shorthorns, just like his dad. Of course, when he was around two years old, Brian changed the name of the breed to “Hortshorn Tassies”, which continues to be a going joke in the family. About 6 years later, another daughter, Kimberly, came along to finalize the Kohlstaedt brood. Larry and Janice’s family has grown from three children and their spouses to include nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. From 1963 until the late 1970s, Larry and Janice continued to grow their farms. At one time, they owned almost 700 acres and rented an additional 500 acres in which they row crop farmed and ran their Shorthorn herd of roughly 40 cattle. He and Janice farmed the land, with help from Bethel Deatherage, Janice’s father, and managed their herd on their own. When Brian got older, he helped farmed, but definitely preferred working with the cattle. Once Kelly and Brian were finally old enough to join 4-H, it meant that they could show their calves. In her first show outing, Kelly’s steer got away from her. She recalls looking for Larry at the side of the ring, and finding him with a look of embarrassment. When it came his turn, Brian handled his steer much better, but laid across the calf, crying, when it came time for it to be sold and loaded. Kimberly didn’t show cattle, however, she spent time in the show ring when she served as the Missouri Lassie Queen in 1987. In the late 1970s, Larry and Janice bought the J&S herd out of Columbia, 10À

MO. Over the years, many females were added from the Greenridge herd and the Alden herd. In 1986, Larry and Robert Alden purchased GR Combo, which produced many prize show animals. In 1991, Kohlstaedt Shorthorn Farms and Cedar Curve Farms held a herd production sale. Larry and Robert Alden partnered up and bought the Len-Ru herd and for several years had numerous production sales together. It was also during this time that Larry and Robert traveled around the country, looking at cattle at shows and sales, purchasing the Red Velvet cow, which produced record setting bulls like Monopoly and Boardwalk. Two bulls that Kohlstaedt Farms really built their herd around in the last few years were Candyman and Diamond Regal Legend. Those two bulls were followed up by Red Stallion. Kohlstaedt Farms have received many recognitions over the years. In 1993, Larry was voted Builder of the Breed by the American Shorthorn Association. He served as president of the Missouri Shorthorn Association for nearly a decade. Janice served in many offices of the Missouri Shorthorn Lassies for nearly 15 years. In 2014, Larry was named Missouri Shorthorn Association Breeder of the Year and in 2017, he was recognized for Show Bull of the Year for K’s Home Brew. Brian has played a vital role in the Missouri Shorthorn Association for nearly 20 years, organizing numerous Missouri State Sales.

With Larry’s declining health over the past few years, Brian has stepped up and played an integral role in Kohlstaedt Farms. In 2017, Larry and Brian held a herd dispersal sale which showcased nearly 60 years of Kohlstaedt Shorthorn cattle. Larry and Janice are honored to be recognized as the American Royal National Shorthorn Show Honoree by the American Shorthorn Association. It is humbling to be honored for doing something that they have loved for so many years. =

On October 24, 2019, Shorthorn enthusiast competed at the National Shorthorn Show at American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. Judge Donnie Robertson of Yukon, Okla., evaluated a total of 76 head of outstanding quality cattle from top to bottom. 34 purebred females, 11 purebred bulls, 23 ShorthornPlus females and 8 ShorthornPlus bulls were shown. Grand Champion Female honors went to Steck Chelsie BS 801 ET, exhibited by Sara Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa. Steck Chelsie BS 801 ET was also named the division Senior Champion Female. WHR RHS Ten Queens 2278 ET was named Reserve Grand Champion Female and Reserve Senior Champion

Displaying Genetic Conditions on a Pedigree 0Genetic conditions are certainly something that we have to pay attention to in the Shorthorn breed. Whether it is TH, PHA, or DS, each of these can cause detrimental effects in your herd if they are not closely monitored. I’m not going to go into the specifics of each of these conditions and how they can impact a calf in this article. Instead, I will focus on some of the nomenclature and symbols that you might see when researching pedigrees in DigitalBeef or if you look at your registration certificates received from ASA. 0 When studying cattle in DigitalBeef, you might have noticed various colored notations of THC, DSF, or other similar abbreviations beside animal names on a pedigree. If you didn’t know what they signified, you are in luck with this article! There are three colors that you will see for these abbreviations: red, green and yellow. I will explain below what they signify. 0Red: If you see a THC, PHAC, or DSC on an animal’s registration certificate or on its Pedigree tab of DigitalBeef, then that animal has been tested and confirmed as a carrier for whichever condition you see noted on the paper. In order to have an animal test as a carrier of TH, PHA, or DS, one of the parents must be a carrier of that condition. Two parents that are tested free should not be able to produce a THC, PHAC, or DSC calf. As always, extra precaution should be taken in regards to breeding 2 carriers of the same genetic condition to each other, as doing so gives you a

25% chance of producing a homozygous calf that will exhibit the signs of TH, PHA, or DS. I would not recommend breeding two carriers of the same genetic condition to each other. 0Green: A THF, PHAF, or DSF on a registration paper or in the Pedigree tab on DigitalBeef indicate that the animal in question has been tested free of the specific genetic condition. Breeding a THF, PHAF, or DSF cow to a bull that is a carrier for any of these conditions CAN produce a calf that is a carrier, but the resulting calf being affected with TH, PHA, or DS will not happen. An animal MUST be tested as free of these conditions to receive the THF, PHAF, or DSF designation on a paper or in the system. Animals that are “free by pedigree” without being tested will not appear with this designation on the paper or in the system. 0Yellow: The most difficult of the colored markers to understand, an animal with a TH, PHA, or DS on their registration paper or on the Pedigree tab on their Animal Info in DigitalBeef is listed as an untested potential carrier for the designated condition. An animal with any of these designations is NOT tested for the genetic condition listed in yellow. Instead, these animals have a tested carrier (THC, PHAC, or DSC) within 4 generations in their pedigree, without an animal tested free (THF, PHAF, or DSF) between them on the pedigree. For example, a calf is listed as PHA because his great-grandsire is PHAC, and none of the cattle in the

direct line back to that great-grandsire in the pedigree have been tested as PHAF. The simplest way to remove the golden letters from a pedigree is to test the animal in question to officially determine if they are free or a carrier for the genetic condition. If an animal does not have a yellow designation, that means there are no tested carriers within 4 generations on the pedigree. That does not mean that you might not find a carrier 5 or more generations back. The DigitalBeef system only checks back for generations to signify a potential carrier. 0Genetic conditions in your herd can easily be managed by doing your homework and taking extra precaution in your breeding program. Hopefully, these color-coded designations on your papers and in DigitalBeef help you when you’re making those decisions to identify animals that are tested for genetic conditions, or those that might be worth the investment to find out their status with a genetic test. 0 With this being the December issue, I want to take the time to wish you all a Merry Christmas. The year 2019 has not been an easy one in the agricultural community. From weather to policy to market volatility, there has been a lot of difficulty thrown at farmers and ranchers. National Sire Test Update by Matt Woolfolk, ASA Director of Performance Programs

0 The National Sire Test is still going strong at the University of Illinois. The second calf crop in the program, born Fall 2018, is in the feedlot with a projected harvest date of the end of November. By the time this magazine hits your mailbox, the cattle will likely be on the rail. You will find a weaning weight report on the set below. The 2018 crop weaned off heavier than their 2017 counterparts by about 50 pounds for both steers and heifers. Based off of Dr. Shike’s projections during the NST Field Day back in August, these cattle may go to harvest about a week earlier than the previous year’s set. Keep an eye out

for a comprehensive report and analysis once we receive all the data back from the packing plant and the GrowSafe information. You’ll find this report in an early 2020 issue of the Shorthorn Country. 0 The 2019 calf crop was calved out during September and recorded the lowest birth weights to date in the NST program. A combination of a very harsh summer in Illinois and solid calving ease genetics across this sire lineup combined to bring weights down a bit on this crop. With such a wide array of Shorthorn genetics used in the NST over the 3 years, it’s a testament to breeders that what was once perceived as an issue now appears to be improving. Out of 347 calves born in the NST, 346 were unassisted. The 2019 calves will go through the same protocol as the previous crops. Weaning will take place around March 1, 2020, when the cattle will be sent to the feedyard on campus to gather growth and intake data before they head to harvest in Fall 2020.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like 2020 ° Phew, it has been awhile since I have dropped a little something in the magazine, but it felt like an appropriate time to swing back by for a “Holiday Hello”, and a Happy New Year to come! ° ° If you were at the annual meeting this year, this might be a bit repetitive, but hearing things multiple times is how it really sticks. Many of you have probably received your 2020 WHR herd assessments. I’m not going to go in-depth with a how-to on those, since there are instructions right on the document (and a how-to video on the website), rather, I’m going to do more of a FAQ in regard to the assessment. Let’s dive in! ° I’m trying to register my 2019 calf, but I get an error that reads “Dam does not have available WHR credit”. ° This means that the dam wasn’t assessed for 2019. If this is the case, contact the office and someone will be able to assist you. 2019 assessments cannot be completed online anymore, since 2020’s are now available. ° I’m looking at my list of cows and there are heifers on it. They shouldn’t be there. ° The WHR assessment list is compiled of any females that have the potential to be bred, based on age. If you have virgin heifers in the list, you can give them the “code 51” disposal code to hold them over until next year’s assessment.

° One of my females is gone, but I still have embryos from her to use. ° • If you have a cow on your assessment list that is a donor and is deceased, give her the disposal code “52”. ° • If you have a cow on your assessment list that is a donor but is still around and can still have natural calves, keep her active. ° I have some foundation cows in my list. Do I have to pay for those too? ° The nice thing with foundation (or any females in your herd that aren’t Shorthorn) cows is that you can give them a code “50”; if they aren’t bred Shorthorn for that year. They will then show up again on your list next year. If they ARE bred Shorthorn, then you’ll want to leave them active. ° I have some females on my list that are sold and/or will be sold. Do I have to pay for those? ° This is a tricky one, because the answer really boils down to “it’s up to you!”. On one hand, if you cull the animal out of your account, it is no longer active, thus won’t be in your account to be transferred. On the other hand, you’ll be paying to assess the female, and when you transfer her, the paid assessment goes along with her. ° How much does it cost to register and transfer my calves after I do/pay the

assessments? ° The fee that you pay for the assessment covers the cost of the registration (done while calf is still under 12 mo of age) and transfer (done within 60 days from the date of sale) of the female’s calf. ° A few helpful hints: ° - Be sure to have all 2019 assessments in by the end of this month! (call with concerns) ° - Please send assessment list in with payment. Payments received without a current list will not be entered until we obtain the list. ° - Assessments cannot be done over the phone for the 2020 year. ° - Be sure to click “save” after every animal that you give a disposal code to. If you forget this step, call the office before you pay, and the list can be reset. ° - If you are leaving animals active, do not give them a code. Just leave them as they are. ° - If you are paying within the January 9th window, the discount is applied once you click “pay online now”. If paying by check, just send the appropriate amount. =
