mobile phone market will not support a product unless the phone has structural soundness, eye appeal and the performance promised. Does this sound familiar? Your ASA Board understands these issues. In September 2013 the need was identified to have the breed move toward 100% WHR. They understood the value of data being submitted to back up our EPDs. The future of the industry and our breed’s survival and acceptance depends on it. The ruling that only WHR breeders will continue to have EPDs printed after January 1, 2015 was made. Like many determinations, the implications of that direction needed adjusting. The board responded again with a ruling that ties the EPDs to the registering member type. To explain, an animal registered by a WHR breeder will have EPDs for the lifetime of that animal, even if purchased by a Junior or Senior, TOC breeder. When the purchased animal goes into production, the TOC breeder must become a WHR breeder to get EPDs on the progeny. This allows commercial bull buyers to maintain EPDs on their herd bulls provided they buy them from WHR breeders. This rule should give the beef industry a secure feeling that Shorthorn breeders are serious seedstock producers. A higher percentage of breeders turning in data will also increase the probability of Shorthorn cattle performing like the data. Remember the mobile phone those consumers are just like us. They expect the phone to perform to the expectations of the performance level indicated. This new ruling, effective the first of the year, will have many positive implications for our Shorthorn breed. The ASA Board appointed a WHR Restructuring Committee which has been at work for over six months now. This group, a combination of board members and breeders, is studying and discussing the restructure of the Shorthorn breed’s performance program. The ASA Board also started the process of attaining a new registry system for breeders and staff to use next year. These activities will provide better service for members as well as providing our breed a better position in the indus-

=New & Notes Farewell Burke Johnson, 85, of Crowheart died on Sunday, June 15, 2014. Nicholas Burke Johnson was born on June 17, 1928 in Lander, Wyoming, to William Nicholas and Katherine (Baker) Johnson. Burke began elementary school in the small community of Burris, Wyo., later moving to an elementary school that was built at the current location of the ditch camp on Old Yellowstone Highway in Crowheart. His ninth grade year was spent in Cheyenne with his grandparents Billie and Emma Johnson. His grandfather, Billie, was an early sheriff of Fremont County and was serving as State Land Commissioner. Tenth and eleventh grades were spent at Lander High School, where he resided in a boarding house. He graduated from Dubois High School with a class of three students in 1946. He spent his entire life in the community of Crowheart, Wyoming. On September 21, 1950 at the First Episcopal Church in Lander, Wyoming, he married Dona E. Hays. They raised two sons, Mike and Doug. They celebrated 63 years together running and growing the Johnson Cattle Company. Burke was a life member and huge supporter of the NRA. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Shorthorn Association and was a member of the Red Angus Association. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Dubois Bank and the Medicine Bow Bank. He also served on the Dubois School Board during the time that his sons Mike and Doug attended the same school. Ranching was Burke’s life from the time he was able to walk. At nine years of age, Burke was sent alone to watch over the summer grazing at Kola Teepee west of Dubois. At that time no cow camps existed for the ranch, so he spent his time on the mountain staying in cabins with cowboys from other outfits. Carrying on the family tradition for the ranch that had its beginnings in Crowheart, Wyoming in 1903. Burke truly loved all aspects of the ranching

52

life. A third generation owner of the Johnson Cattle Company and avid outdoorsman, he chose to spend his time in the wide open spaces of Wyoming enjoying the beautiful country he called home. When he was not outdoors, he was an avid reader of true history and westerns. He looked forward to winter, when trapping was a favorite pastime. Burke always said, “The greatest gift you can give your kids is the gift of teaching them how to work.” He was one of the last, true cattlemen of the Wind River Country. He is survived by his wife Dona, sister Pauline Frost of Lander, Wyo.; son Mike ( Judy) of Crowheart; grandchildren Nikki (Roland) Edwards of Westfield, Wis.; Stephanie Johnson, of Casper, Wyo.; Daniel Johnson of Crowheart, Wyo.; Josh Johnson of Davenport, Fla.; Morgan (Cory) Toye, of Pavilion, Wyo.; Ali Jo Johnson, East Fork, Wyo.; and three greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by by parents Katherine and Nick Johnson, brother Billie Johnson, sister Anne Deal, and son Doug Johnson. Memorials may be made to the NRA in care of Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main Street, Riverton, WY 82501. On-line condolences for the family may be made at www.TheDavisFuneralHome.com. John A. Humphreys, 88, a lifelong resident of Wolcott, passed away at 12 p.m. (noon) Friday, October 31, 2014 at St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette. He was born March 26, 1926 in Lafayette, Indiana to the late Maurice and Ruth (Miller) Humphreys and was a 1944 graduate of Wolcott High School. John married Arlene R. Ruemler on June 26, 1949 in St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds. She died August 2, 2008. John raised livestock and farmed his entire married life on the family farm in Wolcott, Ind. He operated a successful family Shorthorn cattle operation for many years and was on the Board of Directors of the National

Shorthorn Association. He also held offices in both the National and State Shorthorn Associations and was Past President of the Farmers Cooperative in Wolcott. He was a longtime member and elder of Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church in Wolcott. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II and was active in the Wolcott American Legion where he helped in the presentation of military honors for many graveside services. John loved spending time with his family and enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and seeing his grandchildren participate in their activities. Surviving are his son, Andrew Humphreys (wife: Jacqui) of Wolcott; two daughters, Sandra Hipsher of Knoxville, Tenn., and Susan Stevenson (husband: Mark) of Franklin, Ind.; his brother, Jim Humphreys (wife: Gloria) of Wolcott and a brother-in-law, Glenn Lemming of Wolcott. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joshua (wife: Jane), Heather (husband: Adam), John, Amanda (husband: Matt), Josh, Zachary, Jacob and Joseph and his great-grandchildren, John, Jaylynn and Sophia. Preceding him in death with his parents and wife is his sister, Martha Lemming. Memorials may be made to the American Shorthorn Foundation, Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church or the Cornerstone School of Wolcott. Lloyd Francis Becker, age 87, of Carrington, ND, was called home by the Lord on Friday, October 10, 2014, at Sanford Hospital, Bismarck, North Dakota. Lloyd was born on August 20, 1927, the son of Mathias and Lydia (Stickelmeyer) Becker in Carrington, ND. He attended Estabrook School and St. James Academy in New Rockford, ND. On June 16, 1958 Lloyd was united in marriage to Joanne Perkins in

Carrington, ND. They farmed north of Carrington until 2002, when he retired and they moved into Carrington. He loved his life of farming, raising Shorthorns, Black Angus and Duroc pigs. Over the years he showed and won many awards. The highlight was showing the 1967 National Champion Shorthorn Bull in Kansas. In earlier years he was employed by Jim Bronaugh doing carpentry and then later spent many hours building cabinets and refinishing antiques. He was an avid hunter and fisherman with his last big trip being antelope hunting in Wyoming in 2007, with his close friend Tony Casale. One of Lloyd’s special gifts was the ability to strike a conversation with anyone, therefore you would often find him visiting with everyone in the neighborhood. He truly enjoyed and treasured each of the many friendships he made throughout the years. Most of all he loved spending time with his family. Teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a special bond they shared. He was proud of each and every one in his family and all of their accomplishments. He worked hard at everything he did and instilled that lesson into his children. “A Job Worth Doing Is A Job Worth Doing Well”. Lloyd was an active member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Estabrook Township for many years.
