The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “All bulls born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file that qualify to their sire and/or dam (if those profiles are available) in order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”. This means that regardless of service type, all bulls used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

the Next 150 Years
T
he Annual Meeting and the kick-off for the American Shorthorn Association 150Year Celebration, “Americas First,” is now behind us. Wow, what a turnout of enthusiastic Shorthorn breeders! It started with the Breeders Happy Hour at the ASA Office Open House with Shorthorn folk elbow to elbow finding old friends and making new ones. It was a full house of Shorthorn excitement. The Shorthorn passion continued throughout the weekend with record numbers attending the ASA 150Year Celebration Kick-Off. From the unveiling of the book “Shorthorn and the American Cattle Industry” to the Awards Banquet when the Builders of the Breed were presented to the membership, there was an air of positive excitement about the breed for its past, present and future. We all should be honored that this breed is “Americas First” Beef Cattle Association in the USA. The ASA has several activities and new items available to purchase to commemorate the 150th throughout the next 14 months. It will be up to you to maintain the movement to let the industry know about the Shorthorn Breed. When we, as breeders and members of this great breed read about our history, we should be proud to be a part of
something with such a storied past. As we reminisce about the good old days, it makes current activities and events even more special by stacking up memories. Think about the leaders of our breed in the United States 150 years ago. They met in Chicago in late October and November from all across this country. How long it must have taken them to travel to the event. Cars where not yet invented so their mode of transportation were trains or horses and wagons. The dedication and passion of those breeders, leaders and believers in 1872 was a special gift that has passed down to us in 2021-2022. The groundwork and the organization designed with intelligence and foresight by those Shorthorn enthusiasts allows us to move forward from that today. Take some time to think through the needs of today and tomorrow within our breed and industry. It is our turn to lay the groundwork for the next 150 years of sustainability for the ASA. The decisions made today will affect those for generations to come. Not only the decisions of the Board of Directors but the decisions of every breeder and how they design their matings. The mold begins to form on how Shorthorns will fit and go forward. Yes, there will be different types selected over the next
150 years, look at the past 150 years and the mistakes made and corrected. One thing is for sure technology and artificial intelligence (aka AI) will play a significant role going forward. As we celebrate the holiday season with family and loved ones think about how our leaders 150 years ago celebrated the holiday season. Then think about how this special time may be celebrated 150 years from now. The one thing that I think is unchanging will be family. Our past, present and future all have and will cherish family and we enjoy the celebration because of family and loved ones. The Shorthorn Family is no different. The bond among our members and breeders is like none other and may be the secret of our longevity. There will be good times and bad times but that special Shorthorn connection is forever. It pulls the breed through regardless of success and adversities. As we celebrate the holiday season, please consider your family needs and sustainability for the future. Be positive and supportive of family and friends as you raise them up, who knows when you may need a helping hand. Let’s toast this great Shorthorn Breed for all the love it has provided families over the past 150 years and the next 150 years!!! =
Happy Holidays to you and your families from the ASA family in Kansas City! May the New Year be Prosperous and Bountiful for You and Your Family!

Beef Business
Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs
Land of Opportunity Almost all my time looking at a map is for one of two reasons: to figure out the best route to the next cattle event I plan to travel to, or to see how geographically insensible the newest college athletic conferences are after all the shakeups chasing the mighty television dollar. This article looks at the United States map in a slightly different way that is more in line with option 1. I don’t have enough column space for my ranting on the state of college athletics. The map of the United States with the gold-colored states signifies the top ten states for beef cow population in 2021 according to USDA/NASS. There are approximately 31.2 million beef cows currently in this country. The rankings for those states are as follows: 1. Texas 2. Oklahoma 3. Missouri 4. Nebraska 5. South Dakota 6. Kansas 7. Montana 8. Kentucky 9. North Dakota 10. Florida
Those ten states represent the homes of approximately 59% of America’s beef cows. If you look at the top 20 states for beef cows, they make up nearly 82% of the cow population. The states that rank 11 to 20 are largely the Southeast region of the country, with a couple West and Midwest states as well. If you were curious, Rhode Island and Delaware have the lowest numbers of cows on inventory! If you look at those top ten states in terms of their rankings for Shorthorn registrations
10
during the last fiscal year, it looks quite a bit different than the national list: 5. Kansas 6. Oklahoma 8. Texas 10. North Dakota 11. South Dakota 12. Missouri 13. Kentucky 15. Nebraska 21. Montana 37. Florida Those ten states account for slightly over 38% of the 15,066 head registered with the American Shorthorn Association in the 202021 fiscal year. If you look at the top 10 states for Shorthorn registrations (the map with the maroon states), they are home to 37.5% of the nation’s cows. Conversely, 2/3 of our Shorthorn registrations come from these ten states. So, what is my purpose for this information? Mostly it’s to bring forth some interesting information that you might not be aware of. I think it shows that our breed is in a unique situation when the core region that houses our Shorthorn cattle doesn’t exactly line up with what’s known as “cow country” in the USA. I don’t believe it is an insurmountable obstacle for the breed’s commercial acceptance to grow. Time and time again, serious cattlemen have shown that if you have the kind of bull they need for their herd, they will travel to buy them. In conversations with some of you, I know that you are already seeing market opportunities in these cattle-rich areas that are far from home. I recently went to a multibreed, non-Shorthorn bull sale where most of the offering sold to ranches over 1,000 miles from the sale site. I realize this sale is far more exception than it is normal, but it does show that, to loosely quote a classic movie, “If you breed it, they will come!” It’s important to identify the characteristics that will meet the needs of the person you’re
shorthorn country = december 2021
wanting to sell cattle to. The cowman in Kentucky or Florida probably isn’t going to want the exact same type of bulls as the cowboys in the Dakotas. It’s also important to realize that not every potential customer needs to turn into a bull buyer. Sometimes your program just isn’t going to fit what they’re looking for and that is fine. It’s better to let them go somewhere else to find cattle that fit than it is to sell them an animal that you know from the start does not work with what they are looking for. Breed cattle that you like that work and largely appeal to your customer base, and then go above and beyond to take care of them with service before and after the sale.
I respect that the ideas laid out in this article do not appeal or apply to many of you who take the time to read it. In the 202021 fiscal year, 87.5% of the members that registered a calf with ASA registered 10 head or less, and almost 95% registered 20 head or less. Only thirty-four breeders registered more than 50 head. The average number registered per member for the breed this past fiscal year was 6.2 head. Maybe selling bulls into regions several miles from home is not on your radar but breeding quality cattle that satisfy your customers should always be on your mind if you have 1 head or 1,000. I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas season with your loved ones celebrating the best reason we have to celebrate. Enjoy a little time to slow down, eat beef and relax heading into 2022. It won’t be long that we will all be fired back up and going full speed again in the new year! =

Reflecting on the Past Year Texas was an absolute success for our juniors, and the ASA Annual Meeting was great as we began the celebration of our 150th anniversary. So, ending the year with NAILE was like icing on the cake. As we are ending the year, it is safe to say it was a good one for our association but the next year is going to be even better. We hope to see everyone at the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress, as well as Fort Worth Stock Show. I am so excited about the 2022 Junior National Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. It is going to be “Out of This World” and we hope to see everyone there, we know it will be the best one yet. It was a great year and there are many more great years to come. On behalf of the Junior board and myself, I would like to wish everyone a Happy 150th Anniversary and a Happy Holiday. See you in Oklahoma City in January! =

The month of November brought us many things that we look forward to, such as cooler weather, deer season, Thanksgiving, and NAILE. This year at NAILE the Deck the Stalls fundraiser was an absolute success. We had many different types of items donated by gracious donors and purchased by amazing supporters. As always, this fundraiser was an absolute blast! You could just feel the love for the breed standing in the stalls. On behalf of the Junior board and all junior members, I would like to say Thank You to anyone that purchased or donated items for the Deck the Stalls Extravaganza fundraiser. It wasn’t just November that was a blast, it was the entire year in general. As I sit back and reflect on the past year as an AJSA board member, I realize just how much of a family breed this is. We came together to have the first ever Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. We had the best National Junior Shorthorn Show ever in Louisville, Kentucky. The Summit in Amarillo,

American Shorthorn Association 2021 Annual Meeting, Forum & Awards Banquet The 150th Celebration was officially kicked off on October 22 with a social at the ASA office. What a way to kick it off with more than 130 breeders, members and friends attending to enjoy conversation and drinks. The office was full of people who came from all over to visit the office and meet new breeders. Attendees of the social also had the chance to pick up their pre-ordered books and have them signed by the authors, Dr. Bob Hough and Dr. Bert Moore. We also had some specialty items available for purchase during the meeting including 150th whiskey glasses and sweatshirts. These items are only available to purchase at in-person 150th events or shows. After a fun evening of socializing, members gathered the following day at the Hilton Kansas City Airport in Kansas City, Missouri, for the ASA Annual Meeting – Forum and Awards Banquet. The morning kicked off with an update from author, Dr. Bob Hough about the 150th Anniversary B o o k , Shorthorn and the Cattle Industry. He discussed some details of the book and what you can read about with your purchase. Next the ASA staff hosted Shorthorn trivia with questions written from the 150th book. Attendees were challenged on their knowledge of breed history and facts including questions about dates, people and prominent animals. Matt Woolfolk, ASA Director of Performance Programs, was up next to give an update on
Shelby director of youth activities, Diehm director of marketing & communications
ASA Performance. He discussed data progress, feed efficiency EPDs, disposal codes and the genomically enhanced female project. After Matt’s update, we heard from Dr. Tom Field of the University of Nebraska. He gave an engaging speech on How Shorthorn Fits in the History of the Industry. He also talked about the future of the industry and the breed. Up next, we had a panel of Shorthorn legends who discussed what happened to influence the breed. The panel consisted of Don Cardey, California; Brian Cates, Indiana; Ed Kruse, Nebraska; Les Mathers, Illinois; David Ragsdale, Kentucky; Bill Rasor, Texas; Dale Studer, Iowa. During the panel many laughs could be heard around the room as stories were told from the legends. After the panel and lunch, the Annual Meeting began with Montie Soules, Executive Secretary/CEO of ASA giving the state of the association report. The top five states for registrations are Ohio with 1,457 registrations, Indiana with 1,224 registrations, Illinois with 1,072 registrations, Iowa with 1,014 registrations, and Kansas with 972 registrations. He also discussed how our membership continues to grow even more each year. The nominating committee submitted three candidates for the available positions on the board. John Sonderman, Nebraska and Toby Jordan, Indiana, were both up for re-election and Jeff Bedwell, Oklahoma was a new nominee. They were all elected to serve a three-year term on the ASA board. The board elected new officers for the nine-member board. The new president is Joe Bales of Tennessee, and
the vice-president is John Sonderman, Nebraska. The remaining board members are Dave Greenhorn of Ohio, Jerrell Crow of Oklahoma, Lee Miller of Ohio, John Russell of Texas, Mark Gordon of Illinois, Toby Jordan of Indiana and Jeff Bedwell of Oklahoma. On Saturday evening, the awards banquet was full of breeders to be recognized for some great accomplishments. Members were recognized for the last two years of awards including Century Club, Performance Awards and Show Awards. Don and MaryLou Mayse were recognized as the 2021 Heritage Award Winners. The 2020 Merit Award was given to Jeff Aegerter and the 2021 Merit Award was given to Dr. Bob Hough. The 2020 Builder of the Breed awards went to RC Show Cattle, Dr. Roger Hunsley and Ben and Sharon Wilson. The 2021 Builder of the Breed awards were awarded to Dr. Bert Moore and Dr. Tom Turner. Don & MaryLou Mayse
22
In 1992, Don and Marylou Mayse had recently purchased some property in southern Boone County Missouri, a few miles south of Columbia. They had big aspirations for this acreage. It was to be the site for their “forever” home, and Don aspired to get back into cattle. He had grown up having cattle but had been without them for decades. For some time, Don had been drawn to Shorthorns, so he sought some advice from a trusted local expert, Duane Sicht who turned out to be quite an influencer and great friend. For the first few years, Don and Marylou raised a small group of Shorthorns spending quite a bit of time in the show ring where they had some success, and met a ton of great new friends. Youngsters from all around the region honed their showmanship skills with Don’s cattle at the area county and state fairs. It wasn’t long though before he would set his sights on a new target… High Omega-3 Shorthorn Beef. Don and Marylou had been researching the health benefits of a high Omega-3 diet but grew tired of the conventional sources of Omega3’s. At that time wild caught Salmon and Flax seeds were the primary known sources. Both are outstanding, but not as everyday fare. They were both intrigued by the idea of crafting a cattle feed that would Increase

the Omega-3 concentrations in beef, so they got to work. Through a period of trial and error, Don found success and the results were outstanding. Soon, their Shorthorn beef products would be found in many of the area supermarkets, had a dominant showing at the local farmers market, and were featured at some of the area’s most popular restaurants. Popularity in the brand grew throughout the region and expanded to larger markets with mail order and internet sales of well packaged, frozen cuts. Through their website, the couple shipped their Shorthorn products to nearly every state in the nation. The project was a huge success, and Don was super proud of what he had created. All in all, Don was a Shorthorn Cattleman through and through. He felt the breed was the very best for producing the highest quality beef. Natural tenderness and outstanding flavor were the norm, not the exception, and Don was an innovator with exceptional marketing experience. A great breed, a lofty plan, and a tremendous success. His only regret was not starting sooner. No one was able to be present to represent Don and MaryLou Mayse, but we would like to give the family a big congratulations. =

Dr. Bob Hough
Jeff was born into a Shorthorn Breed as his family had a small herd of Shorthorns that was started in 1956. Jeff’s father, Ted, was employed by the American Shorthorn Association for 32 years with him holding the position of Assistant Executive Secretary. Jeff grew up actively involved in the American Junior Shorthorn Association actively participating in state, regional and several National Junior Shows. He was elected to the AJSA Board of Directors and served from 1986-1989. Then in 1994 thanks to a joint effort of Dr. Roger Hunsley, Don Cagwin, and Alan Sears, Jeff was hired to work for the American Shorthorn Association and Shorthorn Country Magazine. In this position he began travelling the Western United States attending production sales, state and regional shows, and other Shorthorn activities. This position evolved into him being the Activities Director and managing all the major Shorthorn shows in the United States including the National Junior Shorthorn Show. He remained in this position until 2000 and was fortunate to build a strong network of Shorthorn cattlemen throughout the United States. In the Fall of 2000,
Aegerter Marketing Services, Inc. was started. This venture began by offering ring service and order buying at various Shorthorn sales around the country. Over time it has grown into a full-service sales management company and has an online sales marketing division. AMS is privileged to work with Shorthorn Breeders all over the United States and even Canada in the promotion and marketing of Shorthorn Cattle and Genetics and have been involved in over 50 sales annually. Perhaps most importantly, Jeff has a wonderful family. His wife, Darla, has worked alongside with him growing the AMS effort and she is equally integral to the success of this venture. Jeff and Darla have one son, Kane, who also has a strong Shorthorn background. Kane grew up participating in AJSA events showing Shorthorn cattle around the country. Kane also served on the AJSA Board of Directors completing his term as President in 2020. The Aegerter’s still maintain a herd of Shorthorn Cattle and truly enjoy the production side of animal agriculture. They feel they are strongly blessed to be a small part of the Shorthorn Family and appreciate the support of everyone that has helped them over the years. Congratulations to Jeff Aegerter for being selected as the 2020 Merit Award Winner. =

RC Show Cattle was formed in the summer of 1991 when Christy graduated from Bowling Green State University and Ron was running his fencing crew during the week in southern Ohio & returning to the farm on the weekends to trim feet. Ron was raised with Shorthorn cattle as his grandparents had them in the 1890’s & his parents into the 1980’s. Christy was raised on a farrow-to-finish hog operation and started showing club calf and Angus her 3rd year in 4-H. RC Show Cattle first bred Maine-Anjou & club calf genetics, but in 1997 purchased CF Nasdaq with Mark Nolan and family. After this purchase they started concentrating more on Shorthorn
genetics. Today they run a 50-head cow herd of Shorthorn & Angus based cows. They also continue to have the day-to-day job of Ron’s fence construction business that was started in 1984. Ron continues to trim feet on show cattle and is a past Ohio Shorthorn Association director. Christy is an active 4-H advisor and has been for the last 25 years as well as a current Ohio Shorthorn association director. They annually exhibit at the NAILE & National Western along with the Ohio Shorthorn preview and many local and BEST sanctioned shows. They market their cattle through their annual Early Bird Sale held Labor Day weekend along with 3-4 online sales throughout the year. Their love for cattle has always agreed on one thing “breed & present sound, functional cattle in an eye appealing package.” Congratulations to our 2020 Builder of the Breed, RC Show Cattle – Ron Rutan and Christy Campbell! =
Dr. Roger E. Hunsley grew up on a livestock ranch near Pierre, South Dakota. He received his Bachelor of Science from South Dakota State University and his master’s degree from North Dakota State University. He obtained his PhD while he was a professor at Iowa State University from 1964-1967. After serving as a fieldman with the American Hereford Association, he joined the Purdue University teaching staff and coached the livestock judging teams from 1967-1983. His teams were first or second in 67 contests and won the national contest in 1971, 1973 and 1978. During his university tenure, Dr. Hunsley was selected as Outstanding Professor of the Year in Agriculture at Iowa State University and Purdue University. He also received the Midwestern Section American Society of Animal Scientists Award for Exceptional Achievement in Teaching. Hunsley was a popular judge, placing cattle at 10 national shows for seven different breeds while at Purdue.
The American Shorthorn Association experienced dramatic growth in membership and revenue during his 20-year tenure from 1983-2003 as Executive Secretary. Under his direction the Shorthorn breed became a leader in performance data collections and was one of the first breeds to publish genetic values for carcass traits and genetic values for tenderness. Hunsley has been called on to judge and conduct stockmen schools in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Brazil, South Africa, Namibia and several other countries. His portrait hangs in the Indiana Hall of Fame at Purdue University. In retirement, he continues an active international life promoting modern beef cattle evaluation practices. Roger and his wife, Carole, currently live in Louisville, Kentucky. Even though he couldn’t be present, his award will be accepted by Barry Jordan. Please help us congratulate Dr. Roger Hunsley as the 2020 Builder of the Breed. =
SharBen Shorthorns of Sharpsburg, Kentucky, started in 1993 with the purchase of a registered Shorthorn bull from Stonelea Farm to use on their commercial herd of 17 Charolais/Limousin cross cows. That purchase was followed quickly by the addition of two bred Shorthorn heifers and then three open SH heifers. Ben and Sharon Wilson’s herd has now grown to a purebred Shorthorn cow-calf operation of 100+ head on almost 400 acres. Choosing Shorthorns was an easy decision due to their docile disposition. As a boy, Ben purchased his first Shorthorns from Jack Ragsdale at Sutherland Farms and Ashley Moss of Nicholasville, Kentucky. After working with others’ cattle in his mixed animal veterinary practice, Ben particularly appreciates being able to work with his own cattle with (as one of his clients expressed it) “only a woman and a dog.” Ben and Sharon participate in numerous sales and exhibit cattle at regional and national shows and have sold cattle to over half the United States from Oregon to Maine as well as Canada. Through their involvement with the breed, they have met many wonderful people that they now consider family. One such friendship led to the shorthorn country = december 2021
partnership with the Hartsfield family from Tennessee to purchase SS Augusta Pride 361 from the Schrag Family. “361” went on to be the dam of 2009 Show Bull of the Year, SB PSC Proud Venture, as well as the granddam of 2020 Jr. National Champion heifer. Despite being busy in their professional lives, they are active in local, state, and national organizations. They are both members of Bath County Cattlemen’s Association. Ben was honored to be inducted into the Bath County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2021. They are both board members of the Kentucky Shorthorn Association, where Ben has served multiple terms as President and Vice President. Ben and Sharon enthusiastically support the American Junior Shorthorn Association. They have both served as judges for various events at Junior Nationals at Louisville and they are members of the syndicate to purchase the donation heifer each year. Ben and Sharon’s goal is to breed honest cattle with show ring style that can perform in the pasture as well. They look forward to continuing to promote Shorthorns and enjoying the company of the wonderful folks in our Shorthorn family. Congratulations Ben and Sharon Wilson for being selected as 2020 Builders of the Breed! =

Dr. Bert Moore
Dr. Tom Turner
Dr. Bert Moore of Indianola, IA, was born and raised on a diversified crop and livestock farm near Iowa Falls. He earned a degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University, and a master’s and doctorate degrees in Animal Nutrition from North Dakota State University. While a graduate student, Moore’s teaching skills were recognized, and he was elevated to an instructor. After completing his degrees, he joined the NDSU faculty, which led to a 40+ year career of teaching a variety of classes at NDSU including meat animal evaluation, livestock selection, breeds of livestock, beef cattle pedigrees, feeds and feeding, ruminant nutrition and sheep and horse production. He coached the livestock judging teams for over 40 years and became the longest-tenured coach in the history of that profession. He also did research in applied nutrition and production. Moore received several awards based on the impact he made on students including the Preferred Professor, Outstanding Advisor and Who’s Who in American Education honors, as well as recognitions from other youth and livestock organizations. His contribution to North Dakota agriculture earned him the North Dakota Agriculturalist of the Year Award for instilling a strong passion for livestock and livestock production into generations of agricultural students. He has built his life in the cattle and sheep industries,
having judged shows in 29 states and four Canadian provinces. As a livestock judge, coach, professor and ambassador, he helped ensure that thousands of students would leave college prepared to build their lives in the industry. He considers his time at NDSU and in North Dakota to have been a most gratifying experience in which he was given the chance to be surrounded by some of the best colleagues and students in the world. Shorthorns have always been a part of Moore’s life. He grew up with them as a third generation Shorthorn breeder from both sides of his family. His home has a room called the “Tie Out Lounge” devoted exclusively to publications, sale catalogs from over 120 years, pictures, and memorabilia about his chosen breed. After leaving NDSU, he became the executive secretary/treasurer of the American Shorthorn Association where he served for four years. He is currently retired to a small farm stocked with Shorthorn cattle and works part-time as a “SimSpecialist” and state association liaison for the American Simmental Association. Bert has a daughter, Angi, and a grandson, Cole. His wife Millie shares his enthusiasm for livestock and served as executive secretary of the Montadale Sheep Breeders Association for 39 years. Congratulations to Bert Moore as the 2021 Builder of the Breed! =

Dr. Turner and his wife Susie have been responsible for the initiation of the OSBA Exhibit at the Ohio Farm Science Review. This outdoor exhibit brings approximately 140,000 visitors annually and the Turners, along with a few other breeders, display approximately 16 head of Shorthorns. The cost of this is supported by the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Allied Industry Council and Ambassador program which was initiated by The Turners. To date, over $100,000 dollars has been raised to support this activity as well as others implemented by the association. Shorthorns have been part of the Turner family since 1948 although Dr. Turner’s great grandfather had Shorthorns in the late nineteenth century. Since retiring in 2011 from Ohio State, Turners have grown their herd to about 60 cows and have sold cattle in 19 states. Congratulations to our 2021 Builder of the Breed, Dr. Thomas B. Turner. =

American Royal Show Honoree Jim and Bev Freed
Two brands, with one common goal, Double J Shorthorns and Jeepetta Cattle Company based in Alex, Oklahoma, both strive to produce exceptional show heifers that juniors can afford, and functional bulls that breeders of all disciplines can use. Both sides of the operation have rich histories that revolve around family values and high-quality cattle. Today, the two brands work together as the Freed Family raises nationally competitive Shorthorn cattle that excel in the show ring and in the pasture and continue to get youth involved in the breed. However, cattle were not always the center point of their operation. James was born and raised in Oklahoma City. Although he did not have any livestock, he developed a passion for the industry during the summers he spent at his grandparent’s farm. Beverly, who was born in Pryor and raised in Tulsa, had a love for horses and grew up barrel racing and pole bending. The two met at Oklahoma Christian College where Beverly graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and James was working on his Doctorate of Medicine. After James completed his studies, as well as two years in the Air force, the two moved to Chickasha where he began his Pediatrics practice. Not long after they were married, the two decided to leave the in-town life behind and head to the country. In 1978 they bought the rural home where they would live for the next 40 years. At a young age, their daughter Janet joined 4-H. She borrowed a lamb to show in ladies’ lead. When she won and received a sheep halter as her prize, she convinced her parents that she needed a lamb to go with it. The family got two lambs for her to show, but due to unfortunate circumstances both sheep passed away. Janet told her dad that they needed a sturdier animal to show, and thus the cattle business began. Janet’s first steer, a Shorthorn, was selected by her Ag teacher for the docility associated with the breed. Over time the family transitioned from steers to heifers and as their son Jerry got older, he began showing cattle as well. Raising Shorthorn cattle was now a family endeavor and the name Double J Shorthorns, with a J for each of their children; Janet and Jerry, 26

reflected that purpose. It didn’t take long for the Freed family to get involved with the Shorthorn breed on the state and national level. When the need arose for James to take on a leadership role within the breed association, he stepped up and served as the president of the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association for many years. In the early 80’s, he was again asked to step up, but this time to fill a 1-year term position on the American Shorthorn Association board. He went on to serve a total of 13 years on the American Shorthorn Association board, including 4- years as ASA Vice President and a 2-year term as ASA President. The national involvement didn’t stop there. Beverly and James also served as junior advisers on the National Junior Shorthorn Association board of directors for 6 years. The couple were honored as recipients of the Junior Volunteer of the Year award for their hard work and dedication to the breed it’s youth involvement. Being geared toward youth is very important for the Freed family. Not only do they breed cattle that are gentle enough to show and cost effective enough for families to afford, but they also work to help any youth they can to get involved. Traditionally, the cattle from Double J and Jeepetta are offered through state association sales, private

treaty or the Heart of the Prairie sale which they had a hand in developing. However, when one local boy came to them with a desire to show and a willingness to work, they worked out a system where he could help around the farm and could show one of their heifers in exchange. Over the years, James and Beverly have gotten many kids involved in showing the breed, including the Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture’s sister. James often says that he did not grow up around cattle and simply learned by listening to others. He and his wife now serve as the teachers to many kids who may have never been around cattle in their lives. They truly are strengthening the future of the Shorthorn industry by teaching kids today to be leaders in the breed tomorrow. Having been married for 54 years now, James and Bev Freed have remained dedicated to the breed and to helping youth for many years after their own kids have grown. Their family has grown now as the Freed’s daughter is now married with two sons of her own who are involved in the cattle business. The family now includes daughter Janet and Son in Law Jim Strate, their family Justin and Lexi Strate, with their 2 daughters, Layton and Jentry. As well as Jarred and Victoria Strate. Their son Jerry and daughter in law
American Royal Carmen Freed also have two kids Vail and Vann Freed. While Jerry’s kids are more active in sports, he still followed in his dad’s footsteps through his career as a pediatrician. James still works as a pediatrician 3 days a week. James served as a past President and Medical Director of Southern Plains Medical Center. He applies his knowledge of how kids grow to selecting structurally correct cattle that will grow at home. After teaching for many years, Beverly transitioned to the full-time herd manger on the farm. As the nuts and bolts of the operation, she keeps records, breaks calves and hauls cattle to shows. She began her own herd, Jeepetta Cattle Company after receiving a calf for her birthday. The name Jeepetta came from the fact that she is known for driving her red Jeep, and the “etta” portion of the name signifies a lady. Bev and James work together to manage the Double J herd, while the Jeepetta side is her thriving success. Together with Double J and Jeepetta, the herd now consist of around 35 head of cattle that carry diverse bloodlines and specially sought out genetics from across the nation. The Freed family believes in finding diamonds in the rough and developing them into something they can be proud of. Their heifers are flashy in the show ring and perform just as well in the pasture like JB Bunny’s Image who was a Reserve Champion Purebred Shorthorn Heifer at National Junior Show for the Freed’s daughter Janet. As well as Ar Su Lu Jaci the National Champion Heifer at Louisville for Bev under the Jeepetta name. The bulls they raise are complete packages for both the purebred and the commercial producer. They are also successful in the show industry including Cor Fear Factor the National Champion Bull at Louisville for Double J and JCC The Heat bringing home the title of South Central Region Show Bull of the Year for Jeepetta. The family has had many All-American Heifers and Bulls, but their real pride is in raising quality cattle and in helping the future of the industry. As a family operation, they have a true passion for the Shorthorn breed and the youth who exhibit them. The Freed family has no intention of stopping anytime soon and they will keep developing cattle that breeders across the nation can proudly add to their herds and will certainly continue to foster the growth of the next generation of the industry. “It was truly a great honor to have been
chosen as the honorees for the American Royal Shorthorn Show,” said Jim and Bev. “Over the years we have enjoyed this great breed of cattle but even greater has been all of the great friends and family we have met and grown to love. We especially have enjoyed being able to be of service to our great juniors and the AJSA.”

News & Notes
Farewells John “Jack” E. Hecox was born on April 20, 1941, in Gothenburg, Nebraska to Eugene and June Belle (Haynes) Hecox and passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 25, 2021, at his home in Dorchester, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 5 days. Jack grew up on the family farm near Gothenburg where he attended and graduated from Gothenburg High School with the Class of 1959. He then went on to attend Wesleyan University in Lincoln where he graduated in 1963. In his younger years, Jack served on the Giltner Fire Department and owned the Giltner Bar. Jack worked at Rhen Marshall in Beatrice where he drove a truck delivering supplies to area farmers. In his later years he worked at Sun-Mart in Crete until he retired. On April 12, 2011, Jack was united in marriage to Nora Fortune. Jack loved to go deer hunting and enjoyed playing golf when he was younger. He loved watching anything Nebraska, especially football and volleyball. After the couple retired, they enjoyed working in their garden and making frozen cucumbers. Jack really enjoyed having Nora’s family over and spending time with them. Jack was preceded in death by his wife,
Nora; parents, Gene and June Hecox; and one nephew. Survivors cherishing his memory include his stepchildren, Kathy (Pankoke) and husband, Ron Peterson, Cortland, Janet (Pollock) and husband, Roy Olsen, Garland; brother, Jerry and wife, Beverly Hecox, Beatrice; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of a life shared with Jack. “History on the Gene and June Hecox Family” Eugene Hecox and June (Haynes) Hecox were both born south of Gothenburg Nebraska in 1915. They both graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1933. June went on to attend business school and then taught school at a country school for a few years. Gene farmed and raised shorthorn cattle. They married in 1939 and in 1941 they had twin boys, Jerry and Jack (John). They continued to farm and ranched on the family farm for more than 70 years. Gene’s passion was working with shorthorn cattle which he did for 85 years. He was active in the state Shorthorn Association for many years as well as judging many Shorthorn shows. Gene was the President of the Shorthorn Association in 1965-1966. Their brand was the Clover-Bar and he was recognized in the Century Club in 1972 for having attained 116 head of
Shorthorns. This was Nebraska’s second largest and the nation’s eleventh largest Shorthorn recorder at that time. Gene and June were members of the Banner United Methodist Church South of Gothenburg. June played the organ for over 60 years there and she also gave piano lessons to the children in the church. They continued farming and ranching until their health would not allow it any longer; they both passed away in the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long-term care unit almost 3 years apart. Jack (John) is my step-dad and in March of this year he passed away unexpectedly. He always treated me like his daughter and he shared with me how much he and his parents thought of the Nebraska Shorthorn Association. Jack’s wishes are that a memorial be given to them in recognition of his parents. He was always proud of his parents and often talked about the Shorthorn cattle and how his Dad loved raising them and being on the family farm. Of course they loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers; in fact Gene and June had season tickets and attended every game that they could! I was lucky enough to have met them many years ago when they were traveling to Lincoln for a few games. They were the nicest, kindest, sweetest couple I could have met. =
The Hecox family recently gave the Nebraska Shorthorn Association $3,000 in memoriam.

Continuing the 150th Anniversary Celebration: Peak View Ranch Provides Shorthorn Steers The Catch-A-Calf program is one of National Western’s most loved traditions! Participants come from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming to compete in the National Western Stock Show’s longest-running program of practical beef cattle management. In just over 80 years the Catch-A-Calf Contest has awarded nearly 3,000 steers to 4-H members hailing from the western United States. The program began in 1935 when 10 boys caught 10 sponsored calves. The contest quickly caught on, and the program grew to include 52 calves by 1942. Soon after World War II, the
program settled at 40 calves per year, which is where the number continues to stand today. The program is designed so successful participants catch a calf, feed it, and return with the animal one year later as a market-ready steer at the National Western Stock Show. The steers are judged on production and carcass quality, while the participants are judged on showmanship, record books, and a personal interview. The Grand and Reserve Grand Champion participants sell their steers at the Auction of Junior Livestock Champions held on the final Friday of
the Stock Show. To help celebrate the ASA 150th Anniversary, Peak View Ranch provided Shorthorn steers for the 2021-2022 program. The Catch-A-Calf participants loaded up their projects in May to head home to start to break their steers and dive into the fun. Participants will show their steers during the 2022 National Western Stock Show on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at 10 a.m. in the CAC Show – Stadium Arena. =
