=Association Outlook

The Perfect Gift he holiday season is upon us. This has always been my favorite time of the year. The twinkle in children’s eyes and the hustle and bustle of everyone preparing for the holiday gives me a special feeling of tradition and family joy. There is a lot to do but that is part of “There is a the fun. There is a lot going on that is part in the Shorthorn breed as well. This is typically a time when breeders spend more time looking at their cattle records once the crops are in and the days are shorter. I encourage everyone to send in all the information on your calf crop, starting with the birth weight and weaning weight. Yes, of course register all the calves you think will be assets to your herd. But, please send in the data even if you do not plan to register the individual calf. We at ASA will record the calf to the dam with the performance data. I know that getting all this information is somewhat a pain and not a lot of fun however; this data is the future of our industry and breed. Whether you show cattle or concentrate on selling bulls this data will help you make better decisions. The

data submitted needs to be on every animal born in a given year or season in order to get a true evaluation and comparison for which ones are performing better or worse. The hardships of winter are here, but the joy of the holseason is in our lot to do but iday soul. The joy of being of the fun.” a Shorthorn breeder is part of that precious holiday season. Gifts from the holiday are not nearly as special as the special gift of a new born Shorthorn calf. To see how this mating is going to be blessed is oh so special. Those results are much more meaningful when the design is for better quality and performance wrapped into one big package. I would like to challenge you during this holiday season to look at each calf born this next year and think “Every day about the complete package. Is the is a holiday package wrapped when a new with calving ease, low birth weight, Shorthorn high quality and a mother with a is born.”

=Intent Run Board Members Announce Intent to Run Rick Leone – I am announcing my intent to run for the American Shorthorn Association board of directors. I have been involved with Shorthorn cattle since 1977 when I purchased my first Shorthorn heifer at the Rocky Mountain Shorthorn Association Sale in Denver, Colorado. I built and developed my Shorthorn program without pause through my youth and college years until present. I am committed to Shorthorn cattle and would like the opportunity to serve you. In 1990 I partnered with my parents to form Peak View Ranch in Fowler, Colorado. I worked closely with them until their retirement five years ago. I presently ranch with my wife Trish and our two children Gabriella and Richard Valentino. My history of involvement and service is lifelong. I have served the Rocky Mountain Shorthorn Association for more than 30 years as president, vice-president and secretary/treasurer. Peak View Ranch has participated in state bull tests, national shows and sales including National Western Stock Show, state shows and sales, the Kansas Beef Expo and the Golden Circle Sale also in Kansas and recently the Leveldale Investment Sale. I have enjoyed showing Shorthorn cattle since my youth. My kids have participated in the ASA's Junior Nationals. I attended Shorthorn University with my daughter Gabri in 2011. This October, we have participated in the Great State Feed Out since its inception. Peak View Ranch has received the ASA's Century Club Award. I have served the ASA as chair head for the appendix registry committee and am currently co-chair of the genetic development committee. I have served multiple terms as the district 20 delegate. I am also involved and serving in other aspects of my profession. I graduated from Colorado State University and received my D.V.M. in 1988. Currently I own and operate Peak View Animal Hospital a mixed animal veterinary practice. I am certified through the American Embryo Transfer Association and perform embryo transfer in multiple species. I currently serve on Zoetis's national cow calf advisory board. In 2005, I was appointed to the Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine by our Governor. Because this appointment is limited to two fouryear terms, my eight years of service was completed last June. While on the state board I served two years as president. I have served on my parish council for more than 20 years. I enjoy coaching my son's team in rec football and basketball. My daughter and I enjoy showing her Suffolk sheep together and her own growing herd of Shorthorns. I am the area 4-H Livestock Judging coach and enjoy that activity with both my kids. Our ranch is located in southeast Colorado. It is a semi arid desert, which has experienced profound drought since 2001 and has just recently begun to experience some relief. Our operation is grounded by very practical financial and production parameters. If you would like to learn more about our operation please go to our web site at www.peakviewranch.com. I would welcome the chance to serve the ASA's membership as a board member. It would be my sincere intent to represent all our members from diverse backgrounds. Our ranch's niche within the Shorthorn breed has developed into a very practical beef production perspective as a seed stock producer. However, my broad and diverse experiences equip me to understand and effectively represent

our varied membership. My science background will be beneficial with issues currently before the board such as genomic testing and multibreed EPD involvement. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to serving you. Sincerely, Rick Leone, D.V.M. Tom Turner – I am excited to announce my candidacy for the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. I am a second generation Shorthorn breeder whose father began breeding Shorthorn cattle in 1948 after being inspired by his grandfather’s Shorthorns. After retiring from The Ohio State University three years ago, my wife Susie and I have rapidly expanded our operation to approximately 50 cows and we held our first On-Line Sale this past October. I graduated with a B.S. degree from Ohio State in 1970, served as a county 4-H agent for nearly three years after which I returned to graduate school at the University of Tennessee. I obtained my Ph.D in beef cattle genetics in 1976 and accepted a position in Animal Science Extension at Virginia Tech. In 1979, I returned to Ohio State in a teaching and research position from which I retired in 2010. At Ohio State I coached the livestock judging team for 32 years, taught beef production and a host of other classes, conducted beef cow-calf research and gave numerous extension presentations. This position offered me the opportunity to judge numerous shows and work in the development of young people, our greatest asset. This travel enabled me to visit Shorthorn herds throughout the United States as well as Canada, England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. Through judging shows I have experienced firsthand the quality and dominance of Shorthorns. And yet, industry experience says our current beef industry is not utilizing our genetics, while a second maternal breed is greatly needed. On the flip side, I have been on the showing side as well while my, now grown, four children were all active in showing livestock, including several Junior Nationals and my daughters were Ohio Lassie Queens. I have served on the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders Association board from 1992-2000 and from 2011 –present. I was president of that organization from 1992-1994 and currently serve as vice president. I also served on the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association serving as president in 1998 and was a member of the board of directors for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. During my tenure, I oversaw the realignment of the beef organizations in Ohio, developed the Ohio BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) youth program, served on the committee that established the Ohio Beef Expo and developed the guidelines for the Ohio Seedstock Improvement Sales among others. I have been fortunate to receive the OCA Industry Service Award, various teaching and advising recognitions and was most humbled to be inducted into the Ohio Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2011. To help promote Shorthorns, I chaired the 2008 Shorthorn University which was held in Ohio and the Ohio Shorthorn Breeder’s Association exhibit at the Farm Science Re-

view featuring live cattle, promoting production sales and creating awareness and opportunity for our breed and Ohio breeders. This exhibit attracts more than 130,000 people in a three day period. I believe that Shorthorn genetics have much to offer the US beef industry and I further believe that the quality of our cattle and people has placed us on the cusp of a dynamic future. My background in teaching, extension, research and production should be invaluable to me in this position. None of us can accomplish the task of moving this breed forward individually – together, the sky is the limit! I will actively and aggressively seek your input. As a breeder and enthusiast of Shorthorn cattle, I look forward to serving this great breed in this capacity. Shorthorn breeders are the greatest people on earth and I would be honored to serve on your board. Robert Alden – I’d like to announce my intent to run for the ASA board of directors. My Shorthorn roots run deep being the fourth generation to breed and raise Shorthorns in my family. My great-grandfather bought his first two Shorthorn heifers in 1920. No outside females were purchased until the early 1970’s. When milking Shorthorns were allowed into the herd book, we took advantage of that and it changed our herd dramatically. There was still something missing and in the late 1970’s we introduced Irish Shorthorns into our herd. Some of the genetics from those cattle are as popular now as they were then. The Margie’s, Dream Lady’s and Dream Girls are all a part of Shorthorn history I’m proud to have been a part of. Dividend and Improver would still be in the pedigrees of many of today’s top Shorthorns.

I was a member of the board for six years and it was some of the most rewarding years I’ve had in the Shorthorn business. I gained a new level of respect for my fellow board members and the responsibilities we had. We took on some pretty tough issues as most boards do and the fact that the decisions we made affected every member of the ASA was not taken lightly. To me it wasn’t a job, it was an honor to represent the membership. The most important thing a board member has to be is open minded and I am. You not only deal with the present issues, but are always looking to the future of the breed. It’s the boards’ responsibility to insure that every single member of the ASA has the opportunity to achieve success with their operation, whether it’s a large or small they are equally as important. If someone were to ask me why I would want to take on these responsibilities again, my answer would be easy. I’d like to stay involved in the association and be able to give back a little to the people and the breed that has been so good to me. My wife Beverly and children Maggie and Tyler have all been instrumental in the success of our Shorthorn operation. They attended almost every show that I travelled to, spending many a morning sleeping in the feed aisles and stalls. Now I’m the one that’s looking for that nap in the feed aisle! Our family vacations consisted of cows, whether driving to Junior Nationals or travelling to Shorthorn sales. I’m sure many of you can relate to those same things. Maggie is now married and we have a sixth generation Shorthorn breeder in the family, Emmit. If that doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know what would. The future looks bright; I want to be a part of it. Thank You for your support Robert Alden

Cow Nutrition Basics It’s decision-making time for the US beef cattle producer on a lot of fronts in December of every year. Do we trade for a new baler? How many heifers do I plan to keep from the coming calf crop? Do I sell feeders in ’13 or hold off until January? Hopefully, how you plan to feed your cows this winter has been part of those discussions or thoughts. For spring calvers, balancing management with available feed resources is crucial to profitability…and longevity of the cow herd should we make a mistake. Fall calving operations have to incorporate a grazing or feed strategy that can bring a healthy cow and calf through the winter months. In either case, here are some tips to success. Body Condition Scoring (BCS) – While most producers are fully capable of assessing condition on a set of cows, tracking changes over time on the individual female in the herd would take a steal trap for a mind. Luckily, a simple spreadsheet or calving book can do all of this for us. A general rule of thumb is to have cows calve at a six and wean at a four BCS. Scoring the herd at weaning tells you how far the cows have to go to reach a six, obviously, some more some less. A good guideline is to have spring-calving cows at their goal BCS by Christmas, and fall-calving cows need to be at the right condition by the 1st of August. This plan prevents you from trying to “catch them up” during late gestation when the weather can be more of a challenge (too hot for fall calvers, too cold for spring calvers) and when the fetus starts to make that cow a bit more uncomfortable. Depending on which study you reference, this could have a detrimental impact birth weights or feed intake, neither of which are desirable. Test your forage – While grains tend to run fairly consistent on nutritional value, not all hay or silage is created equal, year-to-year, field-to-field, cutting-to-cutting. For example, hay can run from 6-22% Crude Protein (CP). If you are supplementing cows

20

with six pounds of modified distiller’s grains (DDGS) and offering free choice hay, the diet with 6% CP hay is FAR different from the hay with over 20% CP. A simple feed analysis will cost you less than a bale of hay and could save you a pile of feed over the winter. Moisture is one of the most important results you get back, helping you balance a ration on a dry-matter basis. If dry-matter versus as-fed conversions confuse you, just ask your nutritionist or feed mill manager to convert everything back to an as-fed basis when they present it to you. However, it’s important to remember that what is on your ration sheet is different than what your cows consume. Feed wastage must be figured in, especially when offering forage free choice. If you store hay outside and feed it free choice, figure on at least 20% wastage. If she eats 30 lbs. a day, you need to set out 36 lbs. Corn silage bunk ensiled outside can vary greatly from that stored in an upright silo. Poorly ensiled feeds or ground hay left outside too long are like feeding your cows manure. Cows don’t like to eat manure. Intake vs. Weather – After a long, hard day of fighting wind chill or nasty precipitation, you might have an extra bowl of chili for supper. Do you offer your cows the same courtesy? As weather changes, the nutritional needs of your cows can be drastically different. If a fall calving cow in Oklahoma gets one of those unseasonal wet snows on Christmas followed by extreme wind, her calf wants more milk and she wants more feed to get dry, stay warm, and lactate. Put more feed out until the weather passes. From another perspective, consider offering your spring-calving cows that “rank” 1 st cutting hay first followed by your better hay as nutrient requirements increase and weather gets more challenging. Fall-calvers need the best hay first, during peak lactation, followed by the poorer hay at weaning time. Remember this as you store hay; don’t bury the 1st cutting in the back of the barn and have to feed it in the most challenging

shorthorn country = december 2013

period. Also remember that cows like good hay; as the quality of the hay goes up, intake increases as well. As a general benchmark, gestating cows will eat 1.52.0% of their body weight of low quality forage, 2.5-3.0% of good quality forage. Lactating cows consume a bit more, say 0.25% more. Adjust your supplementation accordingly. If you think you may run short of hay or silage, consider limit feeding. Research shows that cows will consume their daily needs in 6 hours a day or less. Stringing a hot wire or gating off your feeding area can be a simple fix, and a huge feed savings. Open the gate with morning chores and shut it at lunch time. Be careful to offer baby calves a safe bedded area away from the feeding pad; they may seek to lie down in the wasted forage. As cows crowd the feeding area calves can get in harm’s way. Always Remember to Exercise – Human nutritionists always talk about “diet & exercise” in their health plans for us. Why do our cow herd’s ‘health plans’ tend to stop at the feed bunk? Where you place the feed bunk may be as important as what you put in it. Making your cows heart-healthy by placing feed and water at distant locations ensures they have the endurance to push out a calf and get up to lick it off on their own. Ruminant nutritionists are far better sources to answer your particular management questions than this article. Hopefully, the previous paragraphs at least help you ask the right questions. With all of the environmental challenges beef producers have faced in recent years, proper nutrition on the cows we have left is crucial in turning the corner to significant herd expansion again. =

The Maternal Legends Sale held at Sullivan Farms is always one of the high points of the fall sale season. As witnessed over the last eight years, the cattle sold in this sale have went on to be very successful for their new owners in both the show ring and in the pasture. Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus open heifers were offered in volume and sold with excellent demand throughout the entire sale of each division. It is also interesting to note that the Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus bred heifer demand was as strong as we have ever seen in this sale. A huge crowd gathered to take all this in and the result of the auction was one of the most successful sales in recent memory. $100,000 - Lot 25 - Open Heifer -

The Welcoming Breed I was standing at the Leading A Legacy Sale in Dunlap, Iowa waiting for the sale to start that would help support one of my most awaited events of the year- Junior Nationals. There as I stood, Montie Soules, our new executive secretary, began to speak to a unique crowd of people. He expressed how he felt very welcomed into the breed and he was speaking to some of those very people that welcomed him. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last that a new member is welcomed into the Shorthorn breed. In fact, I am certain that many of you were welcomed into the breed by a local member, a friend, a family member, at your first junior national, or as a junior getting a note from an AJSA board member. Some people were most likely welcomed in multiple ways by multiple people. I actually just finished writing some of those notes to new members of the junior association and those notes were part of how I was welcomed into the breed. I still have that very post card I received. In addition to the postcard, two area Shorthorn breeders, Charlie Bennett and Chad Carlson also welcomed me onto their farms, into

their homes, and even into their families. At my first junior nationals, I met some of the very people I would consider to be some of my greatest friends today. It is amazing how something so seemingly small, can stay with a person long after the initial act. These grassroots actions and connections are how our membership continues to grow and how our membership is retained. These examples are why when you go to cattle shows like Junior Nationals and events like KEY Conference you see young Shorthorn enthusiasts that live hundreds of miles apart talking, laughing, and relaxing together in downtime. Often these Shorthorn youth initially meet at Junior Nationals participating in contests and having a great time. Even though the youth may only see each other a few times a year, friendships pick up and continue exactly where they left off from the last cattle event. These friendships and connections will last these youth a lifetime. One may ask what connects all of these breeders and youth in these ways and I argue that it is their passion for the Shorthorn breed. This passion is why the Shorthorn breed is thriving.

Mackenzie ajsa Nickels director

These youth and even adults that are welcomed into the breed are quick to share that passion and start welcoming others and give back to the breed incredibly quickly. Our executive secretary was welcomed into the breed and has already begun to make changes for the better. Mr. Soules is also giving back to our junior program. He donated his iconic cowboy hat to the Leading A Legacy Sale. It may have been a little dirty and possibly sweaty, but it shows Mr. Soules willingness to help out a breed that has welcomed him in. The Leading A Legacy Sale is not just a fundraiser for Junior Nationals. It truly is about crafting friendships, connections, and memories; leading this legacy of being the welcoming breed and showing our youth how to continue this tradition. “I have never been involved with any other group that has a love for cattle as I have seen with Shorthorn breeders,” says Ricky Guidry in his retiring address as an ASA Board Member. I would like to go on to add that Shorthorn breeders are also some of the most welcoming and caring people in the cattle industry. =

=New & Notes Happy Anniversary

Warren and Lena Campbell, 1905 17th Road, Geneseo, KS celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Welcome!

Warren Campbell and Lena Tummons were married November 3, 1963 in Lawrence, KS. Their children are Jennifer Campbell and partner Anthony Johnson, Salina, KS; Valerie Nichols and husband Terry, Alvord, TX and Jamie Westerhaus and wife Tammy, Granbury, TX. They have two granddaughters Taylor and Lacey Nichols and one grandson Clay Hokr. They have devoted the past 50 years to farming and raising registered Shorthorns under the farm name Blue Gate Shorthorn Farms. They are members of the Kansas Shorthorn Association and the American Shorthorn Association.

Luke & Betsy Bowman of Greens Fork, IN would like to introduce to the Shorthorn world, Oscar Knox Bowman. Oscar was born on October 17, 2013, weighing in at 5 lbs. 15 oz., and 19 in. long. Although he is the only one in his contemporary group, Luke feels that he would perform and ratio well with competition; shorter gestation, lower BW, vigor, good appetite, and rapid growth. His easy nature, moderate bone, slick hair and big rib cage are also welcomed. Mom and baby are doing great, and dad couldn’t be prouder!
