Welcome,
Greetings and welcome to the first look at the fifth annual Durham Nation sale! It is with great anticipation and excitement that I write this as we put the finishing touches on a catalog and prepare it for mailing. What a group of cattle! It’s been especially rewarding to host this sale, taking a front seat in the evolution of it and also the programs that represent it. If you are seeking foundation Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus seedstock, Durham Nation is a worthy source for the most astute cattlemen and women. It has been very humbling to study the catalogs this fall season and note the number of other programs utilizing our genetics by means of service, progeny, or get. Furthermore gratifying to watch those individuals rise to the forefront on many occasions. I have no doubt the offering in Durham Nation 2015 can make a positive impact on your program. It’s not just about the cattle however but also the experience. If you would like to extend your trip and enjoy some relaxing time away we have access to over 2500 acres for upland game and whitetail hunting. Just let us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate! I read a piece recently where former Apple founder Steve Jobs stated “I would rather gamble on our vision than make another me-too product”. The article focused on the fact he made that statement at a time when Apple was nearly defunct and how he stuck to his guns, later taking the company to where it is today. His quote got me thinking about the last 15 years of my life and breeding Shorthorns...I think it could have been my Mission Statement. DURHAMS FOREVER!

All progeny, both natural and embryo guarantees 6 transferrable eggs. Flush to take place on or prior to split 50/50. All costs of embryo transfer split 50/50. 7/1/2016. Buyer has the option of doubling the hammer price and owning full possession, 50% embryo interest. We’re proud to lead off Durham Nation 2015 with a heifer that stems from our most productive cow family and directly from a cow that is responsible for the creation of some of the best herd sires we have ever raised-Capiche, Limitless, Sensation. What makes this one more special? She is the first heifer calf 6S has ever had. That makes her very difficult to sell but our commitment to better the breed with industry driven cattle is why she is offered, and, we look forward to sharing in her future with her new owners if they so choose Marvel 6S’s production record in natural calves of quality is difficult to rival. 9 coming 10 and she sports an impeccable udder, is athletic, all in a traditional, wedge shaped moderate frame. She will go down as one of the best ever to bear the JSF prefix.

Examined Safe. Due 3-16-16 to JSF Broker 157Z. A line bred Marvel, I remember the day I asked long time ND Shorthorn Breeder LeRoy Foss if we could sell this cow along with her heifer calf on Durham Nation. I was happy he agreed. You will not find a more feminine, deep bodied, heavily milking cow that maintains her condition all the while raising a standout heifer calf and does so with a wonderful disposition. Safe to Broker besides. I think LeRoy is gonna be driving a new pickup in early November!

It wasn’t hard to name her, 116C has a booty to make her namesake proud. Her choke front and length of side make her something really special. Everyone knows we don’t breed Shorthorn cattle solely for the purpose of raising show heifers. Every now and then though, we are blessed with one that can run with the best of them and knows what she was put on this earth to do. You could drive an awful long ways and still not find one with a better profile. Can’t wait to see her in the hands of a Junior in St. Paul next summer!

This loud marked Plus heifer has always been a standout here. She has the length of front, natural muscling, and looseness of structure that make her a really formidable ShorthornPlus for next summer’s Jr. Nationals. She’ll be penned with lot 12 on sale day and I’m thinking we may need to hire someone to regulate that gate.

79C represents proven cow power from a very consistent cow. Her last years heifer brought $5000 here and went on to win a couple shows for Katarina Vachal of Valley City, ND. Her better days lie ahead in the pasture and I read this one as much the same. Show her, cow her, sit back and wait for profit.

Awesome April heifer calf here and the only 29W heifer calf we are letting go this year. Talk about a group of future COWS. This one has the most look, was the only roan one, and happens to be a half sib to a steer that Derek Miller of Shreve OH enjoyed a great deal of success with last year. Sweet show prospect here.

BW: 74 lbs. (Mainetainer registration pending) More than one person has told me this is as good a heifer as they have seen all fall, regardless of breed. Black Beauty is proof of what our Plus cattle are capable of when mated for the mainstream show stock industry. Interesting that her sire was also bred and raised in North Dakota by good friend Scott Bailey. She will rep both of our programs in the ring and later in the pasture. Sure glad we don’t have to show against her…looking forward to sharing in a flush one day.

A few years ago we had a group of Commercial Shorthorn heifers on Durham Nation. They were out of the same cows as these few heifers and cut from the same cloth. They all ended up at Respite Farms in Kentucky for Dr. Mike Cavey. He was pleased when they got off the truck but when they started calving he was excited and they have not let him down since. Further proof that our cattle can, and do work in a variety of environments and programs. We wanted to offer a group of these again this fall. Registration papers will be provided for an additional $100/hd.

Blue ROAN FEMALES This group of Blue heifers is FLAT GOOD. If you study this offering and have watched our recent sales you know the job our Blue Top Hand and Jazz descendant females have done in raising some of our best females and top bulls. It is gonna sting when 53-55 leave. 56-58 are poised to make heifers like lot 18. The lot 59 white heifer is yet another example of this, her dam being a Blue Top Hand daughter and sired by Colonel Gus. Top Hand and Colonel Gus will go down as 2 of the best we ever used, and admittedly not near enough. Tie into some great Shorthorn influenced seedstock!
