Greetings and Welcome to Durham Nation 2016!

Having just put the finishing touches on the catalog, I can’t wait for October 29th. I am extremely excited to present this set of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cattle for appraisal and in turn auction them. In terms of depth, diversity, and quality, they will rival any to sell all fall, of any breed. While some want to focus on current headwinds facing the cattle industry, I choose not too and see this as an opportunity for you, the customer, to select from the highest quality set of females we have ever offered, at a price point providing immediate value, and in turn equaling opportunity. This will be the coming out party for a couple bulls destined to leave a lasting impact on not only our herd, but the Shorthorn genepool, Saskvalley Outlaw and Jake’s Reincarnation. Outlaw has exceeded expectations with his ability to transmit performance and eye appeal without sacrificing the important convenience traits this herd was built upon. Speaking of convenience, when it comes to that, Reincarnation does that as well as any bull we have used. His ability to be a calving ease sire of quality is unmatched in current times. Be sure to find each of these bulls sons in the pens leading out to the display cattle on sale day, they will not disappoint. New this year will be our start time of 6PM. We are doing this to better serve our customers from both the surrounding area and afar, not to mention making the day truly yours. We will have football up on the big screens starting at 8AM, with a tailgate party in the barn starting at 11AM and going to 5PM. The sale cattle will be available anytime after noon. This will allow you , the customer, to not be rushed, take your time evaluating the cattle, enjoy the day and a wonderful beef meal prepared by the grad students from NDSU and their Carnivore Catering enterprise, culminating with the auction at 6PM. Once the sale is over, we’ll switch the big screens to our NDSU Bison vs Northern Iowa and hopefully celebrate another Bison win! As always, visitors are welcome to view the cowherd, herd bulls, and cattle in the feedlot throughout the weekend. We take pride in the holistic approach to our program and believe these elements are important proof of our commitment to the breed and industry as a whole. If you would like to extend your stay to do some hunting, just let us know. As always, we are happy to accommodate. Lastly, thanks again for taking time from your busy schedules to view the offering. We look forward to seeing you on October 29th, 2016, rest assured you will not be disappointed! DURHAMS FOREVER!

If there is a cow that has been the example of a profit center here at JSF its 53U. Every year she calves, bull or heifer, I know it will make the sale. Every year she proves me right. She will be remembered for her cool markings and her excellent production. Admittedly, I will probably miss this cow as much as any I’ve ever sold. She is smart, has a great disposition, and is a leader in the cowherd. The only thing I’ve done wrong with this cow is not flush her. If the new owner so desires, I would love to partake in a flush next spring after she calves. She works to everything as is evidenced by her progeny. Her heifer calf at side is set to follow in her footsteps of as an outcross, show and later donor quality female.

Ultrasound Examined Safe. Due approximately February 25th , 2017 to Saskvalley Outlaw. This Patty pair is a special lot. 806U is an own granddaughter of the great JR Patty 120K cow, purchased from us in 2006 by Cyclone Trace Cattle Company. She went on to be a powerful donor for them, landing several high sellers and show champions. John used to write about how there was power in the blood with her progeny and descendants. I couldn’t agree more. Born in the year 2000, 120K was a female ahead of her time. A moderate powerhouse, she combined as much hip and outward rib shape as any cow I have been a part of and tied that together with a long, sleek front and an head that read cow. 806U embodies those same qualities PLUS an incredible amount of depth and capacity. She has landed bulls in purebred and commercial operations from Indiana to Wyoming as well as left us with some outstanding daughters. It’s no accident her heifer calf at side could be her best yet. Bred back the same way and due to calve early again next year. Bull or heifer, I bet she pays for herself x2. Her heifer calf at side is proof of that. She’s been awesome since she hit the ground. One last thing, she has a maternal grandson in the bull pen, 199D. Don’t be surprised if he gets syndicated next February.

The Sara’s have been here for nearly 2 decades and alive and well at the JR Ranch in WA far beyond that. 84X’s dam, 323 lived here til she was 12 and likely could have stayed longer. She was a cow Phil & Luke Bowman found every time they visited the ranch. 84X has the same look of longevity with youthfulness her dam had. Her heifer calf, 135D is flat awesome. I don’t think we’ve raised a more powerful Plus heifer from end-to-end with the kind of cow potential that 135D has. Show her and then mate her anyway you want, she can raise steers, show heifers, or ShorthornPlus herd bulls.

The Lovely lady cow family from the Bollum’s in MN is one I have the utmost respect for and am privileged to have been witness to their quality for over a decade. They are production driven cattle with eye appeal and replicate those qualities time and time again. 34Y is proof of this. If you can find me a better designed red cow from nose to tail, I want to see her. Her last years bull by JSF Reload 32T is at the front end of our 2 yr old bulls that will be offered on Durhams in the Dakotas 2017. It isn’t often that a Maude gets sold here. She goes back to an absolutely exceptional beef cow, JSF Maude 14U. Ask Dale Studer about his daughter out of 14U. Our first Maude, A42, arrived at the ranch nearly 25 years ago via Shorthorn Central, raised by J&H Cattle Co in CA. She was sired by Byland Challenger and an own daughter of J&H Maude P42. Those that have been around awhile will recall Byland Challenger and the P42 cow. P42 did a fair bit of winning out on the coast in the late 80’s. Both her and Challenger were ahead of their time. I’m sure glad Mike Dugdale convinced dad to buy Maude A42. I owe them both.

Twig Marston said that whenever he and his dad needed to bring things “back in line” they went to Keith Lauer’s and bought a bull, and that oftentimes they were out of Cassandra cow. In my estimation this line of KL cows embodied all of the qualities the KL cows are known for but with more punch and eye appeal. 130D and 167C are evidence of that. 130D will stand some tough competition with a halter on her head. She didn’t come to the yard til Sept. 19th, which was the day we weaned the bull calves from her pasture. I said if all went well I’d hoped to get a pic of her and we’d get her broke after pics. The boys tied her twice, washed her the next, and by the following weekend, she was clipped and ready. Why all this you ask? I was tired of people asking me why she wasn’t up in the yard with the sale heifers. First it was Rick Osterday in mid-August. Then it was Marty Ropp from Allied Genetic Resources in late August. Lastly, Cody Nelson the 2nd week of Sept trying to buy her out of the pasture. So, here she is, likely pick of the entire heifer crop. An Adelaide besides. Hopefully at least 2 of those 3 guys bring their checkbooks October 29th. 190C is easily one of the top breds to sell all fall. Her dam has landed numerous bulls on the sales and heifers retained. She has a bull calf this year that is one of the best on the place. Look him up sale day or in Denver, tag 79D.

I am so fortunate to have the relationship I do with long time fellow Shorthorn breeder LeRoy Foss at Lisbon, ND. LeRoy has assembled an incredibly productive set of bred cows and each year the very best come to Durham Nation. 66D is an own granddaughter of JSF Top Hand’s dam, 8048. Her half sister was a top seller last year and sold to Sam Braun in OH. 57D has been a standout all of her days. I’ve always liked the Bellringer’s and this is yet another great one. Calves like her keep us using the bull and will have a good jag again next year. Last but certainly not least, Cathy 157D is a truly special female. The Cathy’s have long been known at Byland for their quality and production. Thanks again LeRoy, you’re one in a million.

She is also the dam of one of the few heifers she ever had, JSF Pasque 52Y. 52Y is the dam of the 2 full sisters selling here. 87D & 49C had another full sister that sold in the fall of 2014, JSF Risque 40B. Some will recall that red knockout, wow did she have a lot of friends. Risque 40B ended up being our second high selling ShorthornPlus heifer that day, going to Whitney Miller in OH. The only time she got beat was when the judge wanted to use a 1600# yearling heifer instead. To each their own. The original Seven Eleven cow came from Gordon Brockmueller in SD and was one of the most unique cows I have ever owned. An own daughter of Venture she would have been considered small by most accounts but she was so big middled, wide hipped, and had one of the best heads on a cow I’ve ever seen. I remember buying 2 trailer loads of cows to get 711 on one of them. That was 10 years ago this fall. Gordon called me the next day telling me he had sellers remorse for letting 711 go and wondered if I would consider bringing her back. I declined. He was a great man and breeder of Shorthorn cattle. I’m proud one of his best continues to further her legacy via JSF. She will be best known as the dam of JSF Navigator T2, a bull we can’t get enough daughters of here. Her last natural calf was 75W. 75W will be one of the best Shorthorn cows to sell in 2016. She has raised $10,000 bulls, high dollar heifers and left several pretty awesome ones here. Her mating to Outlaw is one of extreme intrigue. If you are looking for a great cow, 75W deserves the utmost attention. 65C’s great grandma was 711. She has same powerful hip, body, and eye appeal the 711’s are known for.

She is a beautiful roan powerhouse. Her dam is proving to be a stalwart here in short order, landing a bull on the sale her first year, this female year 2, and year 3…well, she raised a rockstar. He has a quite a fan club already. #91D. When Rick Osterday says he would normally never even look at a calf with that color, but is still thinking about him the next day, he must be good. They all go back to a cow from Iowa named Pacemaker Miss Favorite. I can still picture that old roan Mr. Minot daughter that came to the farm when I couldn’t have been more than 6 years old. THE BLUE’S :: LOTS 60-71

It is both amazing and humbling the calls we get about our blue roan ShorthornPlus cattle. I truly believe if we are going to continue to make inroads commercially, blue roan cattle will be one of the drivers doing it. We understand that our ability to offer these cattle in volume, both bulls and females, is critical to making those inroads for the breed as a whole. We dug deep into our coveted blue roan group to offer the most striking and deepest quality set to ever sell on Durham Nation.

Everyone knows we don’t breed for steers, but AI a handful of cows each year to some of Matt Lautner’s bulls to have something different around the place and have a little fun. You could drive a lot of miles and not find 2 better ShorthornPlus steers. This was endorsed by our photographer Katie Smith. She sees a lot of club calves every fall and was pretty gushy about both of these. If you are looking for a special steer to make next summer a memorable one for your family, be sure to be in the seats the evening of October 29th.
