HAHN HISTORY Hahn Family Shorthorns began in 1934 when Robert Hahn received his first Shorthorn heifer from his father. Although Poland China hogs were his first love in the purebred livestock industry the Shorthorns began their start on the home farm in Marshall County. As cow herd numbers increased gradually, bloodlines from Oakwood Farms in Ohio and Sutherlands in Kentucky began to be implemented in the herd. In 1965, performance testing began thru the Illinois Beef Performance testing program. Performance records remain a mainstay in the program as birth, weaning, and yearling weights are collected on all cattle along with carcass ultrasound information. In 1969 additional pasture ground was purchased and the herd grew to 40 mature cows. Females from Questing Hills in www.hahnshorthorns.com HAHN 2

Illinois, Miles McKee in Iowa, and western Canada genetics were added to increase the numbers. From this group a bull calf named RH Perfect Leader was born. This larger framed white calf developed into the 1973 National Western Grand Champion Bull. It was then a time that the Poland China hogs were phased out in 1970 and from that point on Shorthorn cattle was the primary livestock focus. During the 1970’s and 1980’s the main focus of the herd was in producing show and sale cattle. A variety of herd sires were used during this period of time as several type changes were chased within the Shorthorn breed The year of 1974 was a great year as Robert Hahn was named with the prestigious honor as a Builder of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. In 1994 the family began hosting a judging workout the 3rd

Written by Dick Hahn

Saturday of September. This workout lasted for 21 years and hosted hundreds of students over the years. Programs from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Kentucky attended the workout with students from many different states. We continue to have livestock judging teams come to our operation as we will always give back to the livestock judging world because of everything it has gave to us. In 1996 the herd began hosting a production sale in Congerville, IL at the Reel Livestock Center. In 2000 one of the most notable of cattle offered was DPH Roseanna 300HR. A daughter of CF Hero X commanded the record price of $16,500 for our sale. Purchased by Robert Duis of Grant Park, IL. Embryos were retained and from those embryos came DPH Contender SP2104. interest was purchased in this exciting bull calf in our 2004 fall production sale by Rex Tribbett of Linden, IN. Contender SP2104 was division champion that fall at the NAILE and in 2005 was Grand Champion Bull at the National Western Stock Show. Later that fall Contender was also named Reserve Grand Champion Bull at NAILE. Contender’s genetics are continued in our herd to this day as he continues to be used thru AI and embryo transfer. Several sons, including MJH Frazier and HAHN Undisputed continue being used thru AI. Anther sire that was used and has remained a critical component was DPH No Limits 9931. A national show class winner and Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Bull, his influence of strong maternal traits are characteristics of his daughters that remain in our herd. The herd proceeded into the 21st century with more emphasis placed on functional, profitable, low maintenance cattle. Ultrasounding has been used for nearly 10 years. All yearling cattle are annually ultrasounded. In 2005 the entire Dick and Pam Hahn family was honored as Builders of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. Richard Hahn also served on the National ASA Board for six years from 2002 until 2008 where he also spent

some of those years serving as the President of the National ASA Board of Directors. During this same time period pelvic measurements began being collected. Females with small pelvic areas are culled, along with bull calves with large birth weights. In 2011 the herd purchased Ash Valley Prestige 0665 from Loving Polled Shorthorns of Pawnee Rock, KS. 0665 became a part of the program. Daughters continue to be easy fleshing, low maintenance, productive females that will keep a name for them for decades to come. A major step was taken in 2015 when Dick and his three sons Jeremy, Aaron, and Matthew formed HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. The herd now numbers

70 plus mother cows. A fall private treaty production sale continues to be held. (The focus remains in production of cattle that continue to have style and balance along with predictable genetics for the PRODUCER!) A freezer beef program has been implemented to bring to the customer quality beef to the table that is expected from HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC looks to the future with the 4th generation of the family raising Shorthorns. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC will continue to be a family run cattle operation for another 84 more years with a lot more history to add to this story.

lizabeth heifers always catch our customers’ attention and this heifer will also. B3E is a power bred with added length of body, rib shape, muscle, and huge bone and hoof. Although this may paint a coarse, terminal picture, she is still extraordinarily smooth, sound, and feminine. The Benchmark x Prestige 0665 cross has been a successful mix to create replacement heifers. Her data suggests added growth, muscle, and carcass quality. Her pedigree and genetic profile ensure longevity and maternal excellence. We are focused on blending our superior maternal lines and B3E is bred to an exciting 0665 son of our Leading Lady cow family. Prominence was designed for excellent calving ease without sacrificing look and profitable carcass traits.

his lot offers a unique buying opportunity. This female comes to you as an unplanned, plus 1. She was somehow bred shortly after weaning last fall. She delivered unassisted in June a R/W polled Royal bull calf that has done well in the summer heat. This young cow has a beautiful udder, is flexible and athletic and has maintained, if not added, to her natural fleshing ability nursing her first calf. She sells with your choice of two units of semen from any of our herd sires. Please contact any of us for an accurate list of available sires.

14E is a super sleek, level designed Contender daughter. This female is a genetic opportunity of the highest level. Her full brother, Watchtower, is one of our favorite Contender sons of all time and we have a full sister in production that recently produced a top selling fall heifer calf doing her share of winning in Texas. This female is attractive in her profile, has a great mother and grandmother in production here, sire was a national champion, and is bred to the exciting 0665 son, Prominence. Needless to say, lots of maternal ability stacked into this one.

Fondly is one of the most powerful breds we will offer this fall. She is long bodied, big middled, and stout from any angle. The Undisputed bull has generated sappy, bold featured heifers for us the past couple years and has re-worked his way back into our AI program. Additionally, this female reads exceptionally well on paper. She has balanced growth coupled with a huge REA and pelvic area numbers. Her pregnancy by Supremacy will earn immediate dividends.

29E is potentially one of the last 0665 daughters we will offer. We have had many discussions about how we are probably crazy letting this one go. We love this heifer’s smooth pattern, huge deep middle, sound skeleton, and natural thickness. This female posted a big IMF and pelvic number. A full sister was one of our top sellers a couple of years ago selling to Michigan. We lined up 0665 in her pregnancy breeding her to Prominence for an early 2019 calf. This line breeding will work as their phenotypes compliment nearly perfectly.

ognac has been propelling our program forward at an accelerated rate with heifer calves and sire prospects selling quickly. This female was overlooked a little last fall as she was more moderate in her growth, but this one has quietly pushed to the front of the group. She is stoutly constrtucted, big ribbed, and attractive in her design. Her mother has placed her last two daughters in the sale and they have each sold quickly. This edition came easy at 74 lbs. at birth, posted a huge IMF and pelvic number, and settled early to Prominence. The Cognac x 0665 cross will be awesome.

he Elizabeth line is the most maternally oriented cow family we have and this daughter of Benchmark out of one of the bright young 0665 stars of our herd is no different. This is the most impressive bred heifer on paper in this year’s sale. She posted accelerated growth, extraordinary carcass traits, and has a huge pelvis. Phenotypically, she is wedge shaped, massive, and sound. Blending in the Leading Lady cow family will be exciting. This is as close to a can’t miss as we can sell.

his massive Cognac daughter was exhibited last fall at NAILE and garnered attention for her sweeping rib design and impeccable profile. C35E is a big time cow prospect whose mother is simply one of the best Contender daughters we have retained. We lined up the great Leading Lady cow family in this lot. The extra stoutness, flexibility, and eye appeal from Prominence will compliment C35E. Study this one’s data and you will find exceptional growth coupled with high IMF. We love this female and expect to hear great things from her in the future. Donor cow in waiting.

nother Leading Lady, another front line cow prospect. Leading Lady F37E is a more eye appealing Frazier daughter with a little more stretch. She has developed on a super sound frame and has measured near the top of the group for REA/cwt, IMF, and pelvic area. Additionally, we selected her to AI back to the original 0665. he bred offering concludes with our youngest, but potentially the most exciting lot. Chantilly is as complete in her phenotypic balance and genetic profile as any. She is so sleek through her front end, deep through her center body and flank, while being level and wide at her pins. Dad says you can’t carve a better profile with an exacto knife (even though some may have tried). Her measurables are solid throughout her performance profile showing balance without extremes. Her mating to Prominence is ideal blending her superior eye appeal and structure with his power and presence. A full sister was a top selection in a previous sale by Leveldale Farms.
