HAHN HISTORY Written by Dick Hahn Hahn Family Shorthorns began in 1934 when Robert Hahn received his first Shorthorn heifer from his father. Although Poland China hogs were his first love in the purebred livestock industry, the Shorthorns began their start on the home farm in Marshall County. As cow herd numbers increased gradually, bloodlines from Oakwood Farms in Ohio and Sutherlands in Kentucky began to be implemented in the herd. In 1965, performance testing began thru the Illinois Beef Performance testing program. Performance records remain a www.hahnshorthorns.com HAHN 2
mainstay in the program as birth, weaning, and yearling weights are collected on all cattle along with carcass ultrasound information. In 1969 additional pasture ground was purchased and the herd grew to 40 mature cows. Females from Questing Hills in Illinois, Miles McKee in Iowa, and western Canada genetics were added to increase the numbers. From this group a bull calf named RH Perfect Leader was born. This larger framed white calf developed into the 1973 National Western Grand Champion Bull. It was then a time that the Poland
China hogs were phased out in 1970 and from that point on Shorthorn cattle was the primary livestock focus. During the 1970’s and 1980’s the main focus of the herd was in producing show and sale cattle. A variety of herd sires were used during this period of time as several type changes were chased within the Shorthorn breed. The year of 1974 was a great year as Robert Hahn was named with the prestigious honor as a Builder of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. In 1994 the family began hosting a judging workout the 3rd Saturday of

September. This workout lasted for 21 years and hosted hundreds of students over the years. Programs from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Kentucky attended the workout with students from many different states. We continue to have livestock judging teams come to our operation as we will always give back to the livestock judging world because of everything it has gave to us. In 1996 the herd began hosting a production sale in Congerville, IL at the Reel Livestock Center. In 2000 one of the most notable of cattle offered was DPH Roseanna 300HR. A daughter of CF Hero X commanded the record price of $16,500 for our sale, purchased by Robert Duis of Grant Park, IL. Embryos were retained and from those embryos came DPH Contender SP2104. Possession and 2/3 interest was purchased in this exciting bull calf in our 2004 fall production sale by Rex Tribbett of Linden, IN. Contender SP2104 was division champion that fall at the NAILE and in 2005 was Grand Champion Bull at the National Western Stock Show. Later that fall Contender was also named Reserve Grand Champion Bull at NAILE. Contender’s genetics are continued in our herd to this day as he continues to be used thru AI and embryo transfer. Another sire that was used and has remained a critical component was DPH No Limits 9931. A
national show class winner and Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Bull, his influence of strong maternal traits are characteristics of his daughters that remain in our herd. The herd proceeded into the 21st century with more emphasis placed on functional, profitable, low maintenance cattle.
Ultrasound technology has been used on all yearling cattle for 20 years to measure carcus traits. In 2005, the entire Dick and Pam Hahn family was honored as Builders of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. Richard Hahn also served www.hahnshorthorns.com HAHN 3
PRACTICAL & PROFITABLE
on the National ASA Board for six years from 2002 until 2008 where he also spent some of those years serving as the President of the National ASA Board of Directors. During this same time period, pelvic measurements began being collected. Females with small pelvic areas are culled, along with bull calves with large birth weights. In 2011 the herd purchased Ash Valley Prestige 0665 from Loving Polled Shorthorns of Pawnee Rock, KS. 0665 became a part of the program. Daughters continue to be easy fleshing, low maintenance, productive
females that will keep a name for them for decades to come. A major step was taken in 2015 when Dick and his three sons Jeremy, Aaron, and Matthew formed HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. The herd now numbers 50 mother cows. A fall private treaty production sale continues to be held. (The focus remains in production of cattle that continue to have style and balance along with predictable genetics for the PRODUCER!) A freezer beef program has been implemented to bring to the customer quality
beef to the table that is expected from HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC looks to the future with the 4th generation of the family raising Shorthorns. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC will continue to be a family run cattle operation for another 92 more years with a lot more history to add to this story.

PRACTICAL & PROFITABLE 2021 Sale Bred Heifers Thank you for taking time to sort through our female offerings this fall. Despite the uncertainty and volatility in all of our lives, Hahn Family Shorthorns is so very grateful to have so many great friends, mentors, and partners throughout the Shorthorn and beef industries that provide stability and continuous inspiration and guidance. Additionally, we rely on our belief in family, honesty, and hard work to keep us grounded and to give us principle during good and difficult times. Ours is, like so many, a family operation. Grandpa started this passion of raising Shorthorn cattle that has now spanned nearly 90 years. The knowledge and work ethic that is now being conveyed to a fourth generation of Hahn Shorthorn producers has been built through a belief in our family operation. We stubbornly hold on to the ages old trust in the Shorthorn momma cow to do her job without complication. We strive to make cattle that will function in a variety of environments while still being pleasing to the eye. As we look to the future, we are driven to design predictable, repeatable genetic
profiles that can reduce risk and maximize profitability for our own and customers’ needs. The heifers offered this fall in our offering are elite. The breds are rugged, maternally designed cow prospects developed solely on grass and hay since March. We strictly evaluate and cull to ensure you will be selecting from the best we can offer. This selection includes a spectacular group of Cognac daughters showcasing the mass and look his offspring have become famous for. As his popularity continues to skyrocket, the Supremacy daughters offered will surely catch your eye as maternal powerhouses. As a sale feature, our great friend, William Milashoski, has consigned an overwhelming ShorthornPlus daughter of Hahn Royal C45D that is carrying a very special pregnancy. If you haven’t checked him out yet, please take some time to study Hahn Revelation P21G. This up and coming Ash Valley Prestige 0665 son is our go to calving ease sire and is the natural service sire of all of our bred female offerings. We firmly believe he is one of the best calving ease options available today. Although we only had 8 purebred heifer calves born here in the spring of 2021, we have gathered an impressive set of show heifer prospects with the look, balance, performance, and disposition to provide a great experience for your junior project. Sired by bulls such as Hahn Supremacy C42E, Hahn Crown R23F, Hahn Revelation P21G, and Hahn Royal C45D, these

heifers will also have the ability for continued success as brood cows after their show career is over. Get to Minonk to sort through them early or watch for them through social media, they have the potential to be special. As always, please do not hesitate to contact any of us with questions about the sale or our operation. We would love to have you get a first-hand view of the cattle, so please give us a call and schedule a visit.

favorite of many, Alicia C7H is an absolutely perfect start to this special selection of bred heifers. She is bold ribbed, nearly perfect structured, displays great balance and eye appeal, and is powerful in her build. She is also so good on the move with an ideal angle to her shoulder and athleticism and cushion off her rear two. Her sire, Cognac, was a great herd sire that added body mass and look. Her dam, Alicia C21B is a spectacular, easy fleshing daughter of Contender that will enter ET work soon. Three full sib heifers to C7H have sold to an average of $4800. We continue to use Revelation in our heifer pasture and C7H is due to him in late February. Revelation’s first calf crop reports from our customers around the country have been very exciting. Calves come easy, have eye catching profiles, and are great structured.

13H is another beautiful profiling daughter of Hill Haven Cognac 39B. She has long been a favorite for her extra sleek neck and head and nearly ideal shape to her shoulder and chest. To compliment this, she is so level down her top and hip while having a great set to her hock. She blends together very well and exhibits exceptional balance. We really like the mating to Revelation here. His muscle design and overall rugged build can generate profit potential with this first calf.

his may be the stoutest legged and biggest footed female in the set. An absolute monster at the ground, C15H is one that is as sound as a cat while still being bold in her proportions. Lace has been a fast riser this spring and summer and has been at her best just being out on pasture learning to be a cow. Even though her maternal pedigree isn’t a fancy name, C15H’s mother is as easy fleshing and sound as we have and is a spectacular milk producer. C15H’s pedigree is one of our most successful – Cognac x Prestige 0665 daughter. It is the cross that created Supremacy among many others. This heifer is a sleeper and could be primed to generate a great herd bull prospect sooner rather than later.

JM Cattle sent us this wildly stout, dual registered Royal daughter to develop for this sale, and she has not disappointed. R1H is wide based, has an exceptionally bold rib cage and is easily the heaviest muscled heifer in the group. Ideally, we suppose it would be cooler if she were blue, but this solid black, high % Chi, halfblood Shorthorn is a very unique, outcross breeding piece. She is bred to TRAC Fetish 750E for a late January calf. Fetish is a cool designed, former NWSS Champion herd sire for Tracy Cattle Company. e have had comments in the past about only selling the “leftovers”. If that were the case, this heifer wouldn’t sell. This is a genetic powerhouse and is bred to have a great one right out of the gate. The Wynonna clan started as Matthew’s junior project and he developed them into a cornerstone cow family that will forever have an impact on our genetic base. C26H is a beautiful roan donor cow in training. She is as attractive up front as any in the pasture while possessing the stoutness of feature and rib shape necessary for brood cow function. The addition of Prestige 0665 and Roan Gem in her pregnancy should be an absolute home run. This one is special.

nother that we really shouldn’t let go of (and if up to Jeremy, we wouldn’t). Supremacy stamps the vast majority of his offspring this way: perfectly structured, great patterned, and maternally designed. This heifer checks all of the boxes. Her maternal heritage has been built for longevity and productivity and those that have been paying attention to our program know, the Leading Lady females are big time good. This one could end up being one of the very best we have ever offered. She is a maternal sister to herd sires Hahn Prestige P39C, Hahn Phantom C34E, Hahn Spirit C28F, and coming soon, Hahn Sandman S13J.
