HAHN HISTORY Hahn Family Shorthorns began in 1934 when Robert Hahn received his first Shorthorn heifer from his father. Although Poland China hogs were his first love in the purebred livestock industry the Shorthorns began their start on the home farm in Marshall County. As cow herd numbers increased gradually, bloodlines from Oakwood Farms in Ohio and Sutherlands in Kentucky began to be implemented in the herd. In 1965, performance testing began thru the Illinois Beef Performance testing program. Performance records remain a mainstay in the program as birth, weaning, and yearling weights are collected on all cattle along with carcass ultrasound information. In 1969 additional pasture ground was purchased and the herd grew to 40 mature cows. Females from Questing Hills in www.hahnshorthorns.com HAHN 2
Illinois, Miles McKee in Iowa, and western Canada genetics were added to increase the numbers. From this group a bull calf named RH Perfect Leader was born. This larger framed white calf developed into the 1973 National Western Grand Champion Bull. It was then a time that the Poland China hogs were phased out in 1970 and from that point on Shorthorn cattle was the primary livestock focus. During the 1970’s and 1980’s the main focus of the herd was in producing show and sale cattle. A variety of herd sires were used during this period of time as several type changes were chased within the Shorthorn breed The year of 1974 was a great year as Robert Hahn was named with the prestigious honor as a Builder of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. In 1994 the family began hosting a judging workout the 3rd

Saturday of September. This workout lasted for 21 years and hosted hundreds of students over the years. Programs from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Kentucky attended the workout with students from many different states. We continue to have livestock judging teams come to our operation as we will always give back to the livestock judging world because of everything it has gave to us. In 1996 the herd began hosting a production sale in Congerville, IL at the Reel Livestock Center. In 2000 one of the most notable of cattle offered was DPH Roseanna 300HR. A daughter of CF Hero X commanded the record price of $16,500 for our sale. Purchased by Robert Duis of Grant Park, IL. Embryos were retained and from those embryos came DPH Contender SP2104. Possession and 2/3 interest was
PRACTICAL & PROFITABLE
purchased in this exciting bull calf in our 2004 fall production sale by Rex Tribbett of Linden, IN. Contender SP2104 was division champion that fall at the NAILE and in 2005 was Grand Champion Bull at the National Western Stock Show. Later that fall Contender was also named Reserve Grand Champion Bull at NAILE. Contender’s genetics are continued in our herd to this day as he continues to be used thru AI and embryo transfer. Several sons, including MJH Frazier and HAHN Undisputed continue being used thru AI. Anther sire that was used and has remained a critical component was DPH No Limits 9931. A national show class winner and Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Bull, his influence of strong maternal traits are characteristics of his daughters that remain in our herd. The herd proceeded into the 21st century with more emphasis placed on functional, profitable, low maintenance cattle. Ultrasounding has been used for nearly 10 years. All yearling cattle are annually ultrasounded. In 2005 the entire Dick and Pam Hahn family was honored as Builders of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. Richard Hahn also served on the National ASA Board for six years from 2002 until 2008 where he also spent some of those years serving as
the President of the National ASA Board of Directors. During this same time period pelvic measurements began being collected. Females with small pelvic areas are culled, along with bull calves with large birth weights. In 2011 the herd purchased Ash Valley Prestige 0665 from Loving Polled Shorthorns of Pawnee Rock, KS. 0665 became a part of the program. Daughters continue to be easy fleshing, low maintenance, productive females that will keep a name for them for decades to come. A major step was taken in 2015 when Dick and his three sons Jeremy, Aaron, and Matthew formed HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. The herd now numbers 70 plus mother cows. A fall private
treaty production sale continues to be held. (The focus remains in production of cattle that continue to have style and balance along with predictable genetics for the PRODUCER!) A freezer beef program has been implemented to bring to the customer quality beef to the table that is expected from HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC looks to the future with the 4th generation of the family raising Shorthorns. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC will continue to be a family run cattle operation for another 83 more years with a lot more history to add to this story.

P1D’s full sister was offered in last year’s sale. We told anyone who would ask about the cattle that she was a special female and worth their consideration for purchase. She was a no sale. When there were no takers, we decided to see if we could break her and take her to NAILE. We did. She won her class. She calved unassisted with a really good 4014 heifer in January. P1D is just as good. We don’t think we need to say much else. You should come find her.

U12D is the result of using some of our previously successful older AI sires on the Ediger cows. Undisputed was one of the soggiest made, stoutest featured sons of the great Contender bull. This daughter follows his lead as a super big volumed, easy fleshing cow prospect. Her flexible frame and flat build should afford her great longevity in your herd. Her mother is a nicely balanced, great uddered granddaughter of Captain Obvious.

We are often wondering what this one would be worth if she were roan and sired by a “popular” bull. This Prestige daughter has a magnificent phenotype and the genetic merit to end up in a donor pen. She is smooth, wide centered, sound, and stout. Coupled with her ideal angles on both ends and she is one that many will pick out first. Her mating to 4014 should be fantastic as we had five 4014x0665 heifer calves born this year that will be ones to watch for next fall if someone doesn’t convince us to sell them sooner. Like so many this year, 15D combines muscle and quality in nearly unprecedented fashion scanning with 12.3 in2 REA and 7.24 IMF.

This maternal half sib to a popular Fusion sired sale bred from 2016 is as soggy and easy fleshing as they come. Solid red, built like a truck, and super sound, this heifer is a can’t miss brood cow prospect with bull producing capabilities. Like many others her measured performance includes many highlights such as her 7.47 IMF and 225 cm2 pelvic area. This maternal line is on quite the hot streak right now no matter the sire as her little Cognac sister will be one to watch for next fall.

Another soft made, easy fleshing 0665 daughter here in P26D. This is the type of female that will gain on the most minimal of forage. She is moderate and square in her body design and came as easy as any hanging in the scale at 56 pounds at birth. Her mating to 4014 should result in a stress free easy growing offspring. Pay attention to the ratio of weight on her frame at a year of age: 953 pounds on a 4.7 frame.

P35D is another full sib to a 2016 sale bred. The 2016 model stayed here and produced one of our top 2017 heifer calves. Do not be the breeder that misses out on this special female. P35D is a big stout heifer with added dimension of rib and is great on her feet. She is honestly a better version of last year’s sib, so this one should do big things her first time through the calving barn. As a member of our great Elizabeth clan, she has predictable performance and eye appeal bred in.

We offered this heifer as a potential show prospect last fall since she is one of the few roan 0665 daughters and is super sleek in her neck and shoulder. We couldn’t convince someone then, but we won’t need to do much talking now. She has developed into the big power bred that so many are looking for. Giant legs, big belly, and flat shoulder place her right at the forefront of the current breeding trends. She is another heifer with spectacular birth to yearling spread, unheard of carcass traits, and a pelvis that would birth a moose.

Hahn Leading Lady C38D will be the first Cognac heifer offered as a bred and she is setting a very high bar. Solid red, moderate, chunky, sound. These are the most common adjectives used when describing this half sib to Bedwell Cattle’s calving ease herd sire, Prestige 39B. This heifer’s mother is a calving ease leader in our herd, with her calves averaging 75 pounds at birth. We are excitedly anticipating the maturation of the Cognac daughters as we feel they will be model Shorthorn cows.

The old Wynonna 504 cow is saving her best for last with this special Contender daughter. C53D has had two full brothers work as herd sires here and there are currently two full sisters in the early stages of their careers here. However, as successful as the siblings have been, this version outshines them all. She is so stout, attractive, and sound but is easily the most modern of the litter. She is moderate framed and has exceptional performance values highlighted by her spectacular 7.90 IMF. This is the kind that will build herd sires.

Although the youngest yearling heifer in the pasture, she certainly more than holds her own. Out of the impressive and profitable Polly 422 cow, this Prestige daughter is huge footed and big legged. She reads with a big hip and top while dropping a long and deep ribcage. You would think that her age would put her at a disadvantage from a management standpoint, however, she was one of the first to breed and grew efficiently to match her older counterparts. We would rather keep heifers like this in the herd, but we are committed to offering you the best.
