HAHN HISTORY Hahn Family Shorthorns began in 1934 when Robert Hahn received his first Shorthorn heifer from his father. Although Poland China hogs were his first love in the purebred livestock industry the Shorthorns began their start on the home farm in Marshall County. As cow herd numbers increased gradually, bloodlines from Oakwood Farms in Ohio and Sutherlands in Kentucky began to be implemented in the herd. In 1965, performance testing began thru the Illinois Beef Performance testing program. Performance records remain a mainstay in the program as birth, weaning, and yearling weights are collected on all cattle along with carcass ultrasound information. In 1969 additional pasture ground was purchased and the herd grew to 40 mature cows. Females from Questing Hills in www.hahnshorthorns.com HAHN 2

Illinois, Miles McKee in Iowa, and western Canada genetics were added to increase the numbers. From this group a bull calf named RH Perfect Leader was born. This larger framed white calf developed into the 1973 National Western Grand Champion Bull. It was then a time that the Poland China hogs were phased out in 1970 and from that point on Shorthorn cattle was the primary livestock focus. During the 1970’s and 1980’s the main focus of the herd was in producing show and sale cattle. A variety of herd sires were used during this period of time as several type changes were chased within the Shorthorn breed The year of 1974 was a great year as Robert Hahn was named with the prestigious honor as a Builder of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. In 1994 the family began hosting a judging workout the 3rd

Saturday of September. This workout lasted for 21 years and hosted hundreds of students over the years. Programs from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Kentucky attended the workout with students from many different states. We continue to have livestock judging teams come to our operation as we will always give back to the livestock judging world because of everything it has gave to us. In 1996 the herd began hosting a production sale in Congerville, IL at the Reel Livestock Center. In 2000 one of the most notable of cattle offered was DPH Roseanna 300HR. A daughter of CF Hero X commanded the record price of $16,500 for our sale. Purchased by Robert Duis of Grant Park, IL. Embryos were retained and from those embryos came DPH Contender SP2104. Possession and 2/3

interest was purchased in this exciting bull calf in our 2004 fall production sale by Rex Tribbett of Linden, IN. Contender SP2104 was division champion that fall at the NAILE and in 2005 was Grand Champion Bull at the National Western Stock Show. Later that fall Contender was also named Reserve Grand Champion Bull at NAILE. Contender’s genetics are continued in our herd to this day as he continues to be used thru AI and embryo transfer. Several sons, including MJH Frazier and HAHN Undisputed continue being used thru AI. Anther sire that was used and has remained a critical component was DPH No Limits 9931. A national show class winner and Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Bull, his influence of strong maternal traits are characteristics of his daughters that remain in our herd. The herd proceeded into the 21st century with more emphasis placed on functional, profitable, low maintenance cattle. Ultrasounding has been used for nearly 10 years. All yearling cattle are annually ultrasounded. In 2005 the entire Dick and Pam Hahn family was honored as Builders of the Breed from the American Shorthorn Association. Richard Hahn also served on the National ASA Board for six years from 2002 until 2008 where he also spent

some of those years serving as the President of the National ASA Board of Directors. During this same time period pelvic measurements began being collected. Females with small pelvic areas are culled, along with bull calves with large birth weights. In 2011 the herd purchased Ash Valley Prestige 0665 from Loving Polled Shorthorns of Pawnee Rock, KS. 0665 became a part of the program. Daughters continue to be easy fleshing, low maintenance, productive females that will keep a name for them for decades to come. A major step was taken in 2015 when Dick and his three sons Jeremy, Aaron, and Matthew formed HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. The herd now numbers

70 plus mother cows. A fall private treaty production sale continues to be held. (The focus remains in production of cattle that continue to have style and balance along with predictable genetics for the PRODUCER!) A freezer beef program has been implemented to bring to the customer quality beef to the table that is expected from HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC looks to the future with the 4th generation of the family raising Shorthorns. HAHN Family Shorthorns, LLC will continue to be a family run cattle operation for another 89 more years with a lot more history to add to this story.

he only publicly offered daughter of our famed Elizabeth cow family for the fall of 2019. This solid red maternal powerhouse is as functional as they come. Big maternally shaped center body, super flexible joints, and broody profile make this final daughter of Waukaru Benchmark 4014 a must have for the progressive Shorthorn breeder. Her performance profile reads well, highlighted by a group leading pelvic area, $CEZ, and $BMI. Coupling with our new calving ease specialist, Hahn Quiet Night P7F, should ensure a low stress first parturition. B6F is a full sister to a popular sale bred in 2018 and is a maternal sister to the exciting first son of Supremacy, Hahn Vengeance S4G.

o far, the only daughter of Hahn Why Not B5D born here. Why Not, the maternal brother to Supremacy, is the much talked about herd sire sold to the Schroeder family in Nebraska. 9F’s mother is the dam of Bar Rocking X and Hahn Shorthorns’ AI sire Hahn Royal C45D. Needless to say, this female has a stacked pedigree. On the hoof, she is wide centered, attractive, and stout, the kind that should raise herd bulls. Her mating to Quiet Night is linebred for maternal function and calving ease.

awn leads off a special group of Cognac daughters. This densely designed, moderate female is great in her lines, and as easy fleshing as we can make one. Her mother is a massive middled, sound structured brood cow that has placed and sold 3 previous bred heifers through this sale. All have been described the same, so predictability and prepotency are bred in. C13F is a beautiful roan that has been especially easy to look at since going to pasture this spring. We love her mating to Quiet Night as he should really niche well both genetically and phenotypically.

ergie is a redneck roan standout daughter of Cognac. Cool since the day she dropped, C14F is super soggy, nearly perfect back leg and hip design, and up headed. The versatility of this heifer’s phenotype and performance adds a bunch of value. Whether you need to make sale bulls or show calves, this one can match either goal. We appreciate her consistent and moderate performance profile to match her body. With few, if any, extremes, Fergie is bound to be a versatile, long lived matron.

he Alicia cow family is one that we probably undervalue at times. They are so consistent in producing quality. This striking roan Cognac daughter is a borderline show heifer. So much so, she was broke with the other show prospect last fall. We came to our senses and realized her true value would be as a future donor, so she was turned out on grass. She is still the eye appealing standout without the stress of show feed and travel. Her balance, shape, and skeleton allow for multiple breeding options and outcomes. Her mother is 14 and weaned another fantastic daughter, this time by Prestige 0665. That one might not be offered publicly, so take advantage of possibly the last opportunity to purchase a daughter of one of our long-time herd leading matrons.

he Star family quickly moved into elite status in our herd. Her mother, purchased from Loving Shorthorns, and maternal sister are hopefully going to be in ET soon. Every year, the calves from C19F’s mother do two things – they are leaders for performance and have a bold powerful look. Star C19F follows this mold. She is a massive, wide centered female with natural muscle and stout construction. She is really good in her angles and is an attractive, balanced red neck roan. Like many of her maternal sibs, she leads at 205 and 365 weights. She is also a leader in this contemporary group for IMF and pelvic area. Like all in this set, we are huge fans of this female and expect her to be a profit generating machine.

uite easily the fastest riser over the summer. We knew it would only be a matter of time before her maternal influence kicked in, and when it did, hold on. This soggy, long bodied, cow prospect stems from one of our more favorite cow lines, the Roan Gems. Her mother has successfully placed and sold two prior sibs through this sale and this might end up being the best of them. Perfect angles, big maternally shaped belly, and eye appeal wrapped into a genetic package we trust. uiet Night is the newest calving ease sensation at Hahn Shorthorns. His sire needs very little introduction to those that have followed our genetic program. 0665 is the go to sire for quality coupled with sleep all night calving ease. Further utility is added into P7F through his mother. She is a maternally designed, full sister to the great Frazier C806 bull used here to moderate birth weights and maturity patterns while improving carcass quality. In addition to his genetic profile, P7F is cocky fronted, square built, and good at the ground.
