he holiday season is behind us as we start a new year. The month of January represents a fresh start in a number of ways. New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resolutions can fade away almost as quickly as they appeared. That being said, I want to challenge you as Shorthorn breeders to accept an ongoing tradition and responsibility to continue to help move our breed forward in the industry. This is a continuous 24/7, 365 days every year commitment. Stand tall and relay the Shorthorn story to the world. You may ask what story? My answer is, tell your own story! After all itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what you believe so you will be all the more convincing! The 120 breeders who attended the Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet in December were empowered with loads of information during the forum sessions. We learned that by adding a Shorthorn bull into a crossbreeding program, the use of heterosis is worth $150 per cow per year to that commercial breeder, per Dr. Bob Weaber of KSU! This gives commercial breeders a huge reason to use a Shorthorn bull. Also a Shorthorn is perfect for a 3-way cross such as breeding an Angus x Hereford female to a Shorthorn bull; which keeps the cross British and adds additional heterosis and value. The procedure for calculating indexes and ways to use them was addressed, along with detailed information on the $Fescue index. There was an interesting comparison of how performance data and visual phenotype can affect value - one without the other will not maximize value. The question and answer session with an expert panel focusing on heterosis and selecting for carcass traits was a big topic. This drives home the need to pick a target for your genetic selection that will add value to the product. 53 delegates from 28 states, representing 92% of the membership, attended the annual meeting; giving our membership a huge representation. Committee Chairs reported to the membership and new ASA Board Members were elected. The Awards Banquet was a full house. There were 65 breeders who owned 150 Pacer Performance dams and sires that received recognition, 11 Century Club members were honored, one 107 year old membership was recognized, the regional and national show award winners received awards and the Merit, Heritage and Builder of the Breed award winners were announced. This was a big night for the Shorthorn Breed and its members. On Friday afternoon many breeders participated in the BreakOut Sessions hosted by ASA staff. The committee meetings were well received including a number of members who are excited to help plan the 150th anniversary celebration of the ASA in 2022. The first weekend in December has become known as the annual ASA event that is much more than an annual meeting. If you did not attend in 2017, please plan on attending in 2018 and join the large number of Shorthorn enthusiasts who take advantage of this time for breeder fellowship and education while learning more about your association. Moving Forward in 2018 As I sit down to write this, we just wrapped up a very successful American Shorthorn Association annual meeting. I want to thank all the breeders who made the trip to Kansas City, because without your interest and participation in the breakout sessions, committee meetings and the educational forum those events wouldn’t have been as beneficial. While it may have seemed like information overload, the speakers and panel members laid out some excellent thoughts that can help the breed move forward and gain acceptance in the commercial industry. The opportunity for Shorthorns to increase commercial acceptance lies in becoming a piece of the commercial crossbreeding equation. Speakers and panelists echoed this sentiment throughout the forum, presenting figures to support the need for crossbreeding. Dr. Bob Weaber of Kansas State shared a study that determined a crossbred cow produces an additional 600 pounds of lifetime weaning weight over her straightbred counterpart. Douglas Olsen, a rancher from Nebraska, brought data from his own operation demonstrating that his 8-year old crossbred cows produced more pounds of weaning weight than his 11 year old straightbred cows. Eye-opening figures like these make the compelling case for crossbreeding. If a commercial cattleman is raising his own replacement females, there is a place in his program for Shorthorn bulls. As Shorthorn breeders, you already know that the breed is capable of making quality broodcows. There are a lot of commercial cows in this country that could use a shot of

heterosis to boost their production. We are in a business where inputs are high and profit margins are tight, and the chance to improve outputs and bottom lines through crossbreeding with Shorthorns is a great opportunity for your customers. Our industry is becoming increasingly data-driven. All the members of the panel discussion, Dr. Larry Kuehn, Douglas Olsen, and Jeff Gooden, discussed the need and usage of data in the cattle industry. Dr. Kuehn, a geneticist at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center, showed the audience some production data they have collected on Shorthorn cattle over the years. Olsen discussed the data collected in his operation, as well as his partnership with another breed association in a sire test. Gooden has seen the need for data at his various endeavors from selling commercial bulls to managing a purebred operation and now a feedlot and packing plant. At the breed level, collecting data is important to validate the strengths of Shorthorn cattle. Opportunities like the Illinois Sire Test and other potential tests give us real-world information that we can share with cattlemen interested in the Shorthorn breed. As a breeder, collecting data will give you more tools to make selection decisions in your herd, as well as help your customers make their purchasing decisions. However, Dr. Mark Johnson of Oklahoma State University reminded breeders that not all traits can be measured objectively, and we still have to use our eyes to evaluate some economically important traits. All the data in the world won’t help us sell structurally unsound bulls with no eye

appeal. Visual appraisal still matters to commercial cattlemen. As we move forward as a breed, it will be important to continue to pursue new avenues to make our cattle better. Patrick Wall touched on the new $Fescue tool, as well as other traits of interest on the horizon, such as feed intake. It will be exciting to see what traits we identify as new strengths of the Shorthorn in the ever-changing beef industry. Bryce Schumann displayed a slide that read “If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less.” As an industry with strong traditions, the thought of changing things can scare some of us (myself included). But it is also a very competitive marketplace, and those who are complacent will be left behind. Montie echoed these sentiments during his State of Shorthorns address at the annual meeting. The theme of the weekend was “Make Shorthorns Great Again”, and I think there is certainly opportunity to make that happen. It will take a team effort between staff and membership to grow our share of the bull market pie. We must embrace our role as an important piece of the commercial crossbreeding equation and utilize the advantages of heterosis in our favor. We must focus on breeding cattle that commercial cattlemen want and providing them with the data they ask for. And we can’t be afraid to adapt when new technologies or developments come along and change how we conduct business. With the high breeder enthusiasm coming out of Kansas City, I think there are a lot of people ready to Make Shorthorns Great Again. =

= Junior Corner New Year’s Resolution As we enter the New Year people come in with high hopes of things they want to accomplish in the year 2018. Most people have New Year’s Resolutions whether that be working out, eating healthy, or even for some of us college students getting a full 8 hours of sleep every night. While some of these resolutions are more achievable than others, it is important not to get lazy with them as the weeks and months go on. So, developing a plan, sticking to it, and adding some incentives along the way can make following through with those resolutions a lot easier and more achievable. Though, being able to develop and plan for anything is one of the first steps in completing a task at hand. That may be creating your workout plan to fit your schedule or a game plan for the extremely busy show days we have all encountered. Having a ballpark idea of what to expect and get done can make things run so much smoother and cause less confusion, not to mention limiting the room for error. Knowing the right time when to get your heifer fed and in the barn, gets the ball rolling. After that, know-

ing when to start fitting to give yourself plenty of time to get up to the ring so you don’t miss your class. Developing a plan goes much further than a simple New Year’s Resolution and even the show ring. Being able to develop a plan is a skill that you can use in everyday life. That may be in school while students study for finals, or in your jobs or careers to have a plan on what to get done that week. After that, what is the point of developing a plan if you don’t have the will to stick to it. In this situation, I turn to a quote by Joel A. Barker which states “A vision without action is merely a dream. While an action without vision just passes time. Vision with action can change the world.” It shows us in the first sentence alone that having a plan but no dedication or action with it is a dream, or at that point useless. Most people can dream of success or sticking to their plan, but unless you have action or dedication behind it that plan may never get accomplished. While we are all guilty at one time or another about our action or dedication to

our plan. Having little incentives or victories along the way can reassure you of your plan and get you to follow through. When it comes to eating healthy, we all know the sweets are sometimes too hard to resist. Setting up an incentive to allow yourself one sweet on a Friday or Saturday night is an incentive to work hard and stick to your healthy eating plan all week. A more relatable scenario for us college students might be, I can take a nap after I get my homework done for my math class. Little things like that can make it easier to commit and propel yourself through you plan. All in all, I hope you all crush your New Year’s Resolutions this year and maybe take the things we talked about to heart and implement them in your daily lives. Being able to develop a plan, commit to it, and allow yourself some small victories here and there can make 2018 an amazing year for anyone in your job, in school, or just every day work. Shorthorn enthusiasts made the iconic walk onto the green shavings at North American International Livestock Exposition in November. Breeders had come from near and far to exhibit their best animals at the National Show for Shorthorns. This year, from November 11th through the 13th, 437 head of Shorthorn cattle stepped into the ring to compete for the highest honors in the breed. Thanks to each and every one of you, it was another outstanding year as the Shorthorn show continues to grow!

The 2017 North American International Livestock Exposition Jack C. Ragsdale National Shorthorn Show honoree was Doug Schrag from Marion, South Dakota. Doug was a third generation Shorthorn breeder following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. In an operation that has spanned over 100 years, there have been many milestones that have had major impact on the Schrag herd and the Shorthorn breed. Herd sire selection was the highest priority to Doug, through the 60’s and 70’s several herd sires 20

were imported from Canada from the Kenebar program. In 1994, Doug was instrumental in importing Dunbeacon Venture from Australia. This was the first importation of a live Shorthorn bull to North America in over 30 years. Cow families were also a major focus to the operation. Over the years cow families such as Marion’s Delight, Jealousy Par, Revival, and the famed Augusta Pride family originated and were propagated at Schrag Shorthorns. In 1966, Doug and his father Paul started an annual bull sale, marketing

bulls to commercial and seed stock producers across the country. In 1987, the first production sale “Impact for the eighties” featuring progeny from AF Dividend’s Impact was started. AF Dividend’s Impact lead the ASA in number of registrations, weaning and yearling EPD performance and received several sire of the year honors through the eighties and early nineties. Doug was honored as builder of the breed in 1988. He also served several terms on the American Polled Society board of directors and 2 terms on the National board of directors. His son Cory and wife Melissa, along with their two children Sammi and Jaxon currently manage the operation. Both kids are very active in the operation and the Shorthorn breed. Sammi is currently a member of the AJSA board of directors and Jaxon can be found at the chutes on show day. Doug credited much of his success from strong family support. His wife Candace and daughter Tammy, her two children Ashlyn and Tyce, along with Doug’s two sisters Judy and Mary and brother-in-law Jim are in attendance representing the entire Schrag family. Doug left us way to soon, but the legacy and passion for the Shorthorn breed will survive for generations to follow. If Doug were here today he would no doubt like to thank the many dear friends and fellow breeders who worked so hard together to make the breed what it is today. In other news, the Lassies are once again happy to announce that the Lassie Princess Hour and Lassie 101 programs were a huge success at the Jr National Show held this past July. The Lassie Tea has become a big part of Jr. Nationals and we believe it is something that the younger set looks forward to every year. American Shorthorn Association 2017 Annual Meeting - Forum & Awards Banquet The 2017 ASA Annual Meeting – Forum & Awards Banquet had a great attendance of Shorthorn members during the two-day event at Harrah’s Hotel & Casino in Kansas City, Missouri. Friday, December 1, started with the breakout sessions led by the ASA staff. Matt Woolfolk shared how members could build better performance data in the herd. Heather Lange & Rochelle Wilson explained the ASA registry and DNA policies while answering member questions. Shelby Rogers described the opportunities ASA provides to breeders to market Shorthorn cattle and Amy Sampson of Shorthorn Country spoke about advertising with the magazine. Emily Velisek informed state association leaders how to become an ambassador for the Shorthorn breed. After the breakout sessions, members were invited to attend committee meetings. The ASA Genetic Evaluation Committee, ASA Commercial Acceptance Committee, ASA ShorthornPlus/Composite Committee and ASA Promotion Committee had great groups of members eager to learn and participate. The new ASA 150th anniversary committee had an exceptional group of members who are enthusiastic to assist in the planning of the 150th anniversary of the ASA that takes place in 2022. On Saturday, December 2, Dr. Bob Weaber of Kansas State University, spoke

about the importance of heterosis and presented dollar figures to emphasize the value of using it in your herd. Matt Woolfolk followed by explaining selection indices to the membership. Patrick Wall, Iowa State University Beef Specialist, then described the new $Fescue that was recently released. Dr. Mark Johnson of Oklahoma State University, spoke of the value of using performance data and visual phenotype when making herd decisions. The panel of Dr. Larry Keuhn, US MARC, Douglas Olsen, Olsen Ranches, and Jeff Gooden, Valley Oaks Feeders Operations Manager, moderated by Bryce Schumann engaged the attendees. There were many great questions from membership answered by the panel of speakers. Bryce gave a great wrap-up presentation and encourage members to take what they learned and share with other breeders. After the forum of speakers, the annual meeting was in session. The ASA auditor gave a financial report and told attendees that the association is in great condition financially. Montie D. Soules gave the state of the association report. The highlights of his report being the senior membership has a 14 percent increase in paid membership this calendar year, 19 percent increase in junior membership for the fiscal year, 13 percent increase in new junior membership for the calendar year, and 26 percent

increase in WHR assessments for the calendar year. There were 53 delegates from 28 states that represented 92 percent of the paid membership in attendance to vote for directors. Marty Loving and Mark Gordon retired from the board, Nancy Grathwohl-Heter was up for re-election, Joe Bales and Dave Greenhorn were running as new board members. Nancy, Joe and Dave were elected to serve on the board for the next three years. After the election of the new board members, the board voted on new officers. James Freed was elected as the new president, Rick Leone was elected as vice-president, and Ed Kruse will continue to serve as the executive director. That evening there were more than 120 people in attendance for the awards banquet. Members were recognized for Century Club, Pacer Performance Awards and Show Awards. The new Shorthorn Merit Award was presented to Larry Cundiff. The new Heritage Awards were presented to Kenneth Rogers Bridges, Rocky Branch Shorthorns and Don Hutzel. The Builder of the Breed was awarded to John Sullivan and Laurence Pathy. Thank you to all those who attended this event and congratulations to those who were recognized. We can’t wait to see everyone back in Kansas City next year! =

The Shorthorn Merit Award The Shorthorn Merit Award will recognize individuals that are not Shorthorn breeders who support and promote the cattle industry. This award honors those beef cattle industry leaders who have specifically assisted and had a positive influence on the Shorthorn breed. These individuals have been exceptional supporters and dedicated friends of the Shorthorn breed for many years.

The Shorthorn Heritage Award The Shorthorn Heritage Award recognizes Shorthorn members who have shown exceptional leadership for Shorthorn activities in a state or regional area. These honorees are persons that have shown exceptional passion in all areas of the breed. Award recipients have promoted the breed by taking leadership roles within their respective geographical areas. They are individuals that can be given credit to helping with the longterm success of the breed at any level. They have attended functions, been a mainstay, and have shown their passion and love for the breed and the people in the breed. A Heritage Award winner is a true Shorthorn enthusiast who has positively impacted the breed to the benefit of all Shorthorn breeders.

Dr. Larry Cundiff Larry Cundiff was reared on a livestock and grain farm near Abilene, Kansas. He and his wife have a son, two daughters, and seven grandchildren. Larry received a B.S. degree in Animal Science at Kansas State University in 1961 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at Oklahoma State University in 1964 and 1966. From 1966 to 1967, he was Assistant Professor of Animal Science at the University of Kentucky. In 1967 he joined the United States Department of Agriculture as a Research Geneticist. He conducted beef cattle breeding research and was Coordinator of Regional Research Project NC-1 (1967-1988) located at the University of Nebraska from 1967 to 1973 and at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, NE from 1973- to 2007. At the USMARC, he was an important member of a team of scientists that impacted genetic improvement programs,

choice of breeds, crossbreeding systems and composite populations used for beef production in the United States and other countries. His colleagues included Drs. Gregory, Dickerson, Koch, and Van Vleck and many key scientists, staff and graduate students at the USMARC, University of Nebraska, and other cooperating institutions. Dr. Cundiff was leader of a heterosis project evaluating effects of heterosis over four generations of systematic crossing of Herefords, Angus and Shorthorn cattle. Results from this program had a major influence on use of crossbreeding globally to utilize heterosis and reduce cost of beef production. Dr. Cundiff also served 32 years as leader of a comprehensive Germplasm Evaluation Program to characterize performance of 37 diverse breeds of beef cattle. Results from this research have impacted choice of breeds used in beef production in the U.S. and other countries. Data from this ongoing program provided the basis for across-breed EPD’s (expected progeny differences) used widely to compare animals of different breeds for 25 years. =

Don Hutzel Don Hutzel was born in Cincinnati and raised in the area of southwestern Ohio. His father was the oldest of a large family of brothers. Some of his brothers operated a farm in Warren County where they milked a herd of registered Jersey cattle. One of the official “Elsie” cows was bred there. Hutzel’s love and enthusiasm for purebred cattle began there. Near Hutzel’s homeplace farm was a registered herd of Shorthorn cattle, Landen Farms. He had no experience in showing beef cattle but he was hired to help prepare the show cattle for some local fairs. This is how he got his start with beef cattle. Hutzel enrolled in agriculture at Ohio State. Since he came from an urban/dairy background, he decided he wanted to make a name for himself in the beef cattle world. Hutzel spent his spare time at the beef cattle barns which is how he got to know Herman Purdy. When Herman was hired to transfer to Penn State to improve their beef cattle herds, Hutzel was one of the few students that went to Penn State with Herman. They fitted and showed large numbers of cattle in all three of the major British breeds at state, regional and the International Livestock Exposition. Their most

famous champion was the overall international champion steer, a Shorthorn named Troubadour. After graduation and a short time in the Army, Hutzel took his first real job as herdsman at Acadia Farms, a purebred Shorthorn Farm near Cleveland, Ohio. Shortly after taking the herdsman position, he was offered the manager position. After some hard work and support, they had best 10 head at the International in 1960. During this time, Shorthorn cattle were greatly influenced by Scotch bulls. While at Acadia, Hutzel inherited two bulls, Calrossie Troubadour and Kinellar Napoleon. Much of what was done at Acadia was influenced by these two bulls. After working for an Angus farm for a few years, Hutzel returned to Ohio to launch a career in cattle breeding working for AI companies. Hutzel has had many successes from career, to family and everything in between. He says that he has seen cattle breeding come from the short-legged fat cattle, then giant lean cattle to where it is today. He believes that beef cattle breeding is on target for what the market desires and we now have great genetic tools to keep improving. =

The Shorthorn Heritage Award

Kenneth Rogers Bridges Kenneth Rogers Bridges grew up as on a 140acre cotton farm in Jackson County Georgia. He started showing beef cattle in 1951 as a member of the local high school FFA Chapter. This experience was his introduction to the Shorthorn breed. In 10th grade, Mr. Bridges decided he wanted to be a teacher of agriculture, and gained a higher education to reach this goal. In 1960, Mr. Bridges became a vocational agriculture teacher and worked with students to develop a strong livestock program with an emphasis on Shorthorn show stock. His 32-year teaching career in vocational agriculture maintained a central theme in promoting Shorthorns as the breed of choice for his students. In 1966, Mr. Bridges purchased the 140-acre farm he was raised on and began his registered Shorthorn herd. He has con-

Rocky Branch Shorthorns

Rocky Branch Shorthorns began in 1978 when Lee, Joy and Hannah Kerby purchased three registered Shorthorns, a bred cow and two heifers. Joy grew up on a farm in Daisy, Tennessee, that was first a dairy and then a commercial beef cattle operation. Herman Yarnell, Joy’s father, used purebred Shorthorn bulls to cross with Hereford based cows. Dr. Fred Mitchell, breeder of the bulls, saved his best steer each year for Joy to show, fostering a lifelong love of Shorthorns and emphasizing the importance of Junior activities. Lee learned about cattle from the other end of the production chain from a father who had careers as a butcher and federal meat inspector. The log cabin home at Rock Branch Shorthorns shows the deep history of the Shorthorn breed. From the 1822 edition of the Coates Herd Book and Durham Ox print to the first active Shorthorn website, created in 1997, it is obvious the importance Shorthorns play for this family. Oil paintings, prints, books, sculpture, porcelain and stained glass portray an array of Shorthorn heritage and that’s before you’ve even seen the cows.  In 1986, with the home farm now located inside the city limits and facing encroachment on all sides, Rocky Branch Shorthorns moved to the Paint Rock Valley in Roane County, Tennessee. This farm is part of an original land grant. The old dogtrot house and double pen log barn date back to 1835.  The Shorthorn herd has grown significantly since the first purchase in 1978, numbering around 60 head, and now consists of primarily home bred cows with sire influence from Glengyron Shorthorns of Australia, Shadybrook Shorthorns and Masonic Homes.  Lee and Joy have had the pleasure of attending nine World Shorthorn Conferences and are planning on visiting Australia in 2019. Serving as Secretary for the 11th

centrated on the promotion of the breed throughout the Southeastern US and consistently strives to improve his own herd. His cattle have primarily been used for show stock throughout the region and as registered Shorthorn herd starter stock. In 1972, Mr. Bridges was a founding member of the Southeastern Shorthorn Association and served as the President of the organization from 1980-1982. In 1985, he was the Southeastern Delegate to the National Shorthorn Association. In 1992, Mr. Bridges was the top Shorthorn recorder for the State of Georgia. From 2001-2005, Mr. Bridges served as the President of the Jackson County Cattlemen’s Association. Mr. Kenneth Bridges has tirelessly promoted the Shorthorn breed in the Southeastern United States. His cattle have won many championships both in same breed competitions and also against other British breeds combined. He is greatly honored to be here today to receive the Heritage Award from the American Shorthorn Association. =

Shorthorn World Conference held in the US in 2004 provided an opportunity to return some of the outstanding hospitality received on previous trips, renew friendships, and meet and visit with the US breeders whose cooperation made the conference and tour such a success.  Some other Shorthorn activities they have been involved in include: Secretary of the 11th Shorthorn World Conference organizing committee: Multiple terms as state delegate to annual ASA meeting, ASA committee chair; Multiple terms as ASA committee member; Multiple terms as director of the Tennessee Shorthorn Association; Long time supporter of Junior Shorthorn activities on national (AJSA), regional (Southeast Junior Shorthorn Assoc.), state (Tennessee Junior Shorthorn Assoc.) and local 4-H and FFA activities Hannah lives outside Washington, D.C. She manages the website and computer logistics for Rocky Branch Shorthorns and joined Lee and Joy in welcoming the 11th World Shorthorn Tour to Roane County (where better to raise Shorthorns?) along with her late husband Dave. Hannah holds a Master’s Degree in International Agricultural Development from Texas A&M and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design. As an undergraduate at Duke she was able to obtain a summer internship at the Irish Ministry of Agriculture in Dublin through the Shorthorn connection with Austin Mescal, deputy agriculture minister. The Shorthorn cattle and Shorthorn artifacts at Rocky Branch Shorthorns are important, but the most significant Shorthorn connections are with the people who love and promote this great breed, both here and around the world, now and for the future! They are honored to be named a Heritage Award Winner. =

Builder of the Breed The Builder of the Breed honoree is or has been an active breeder of Shorthorn cattle. This person has true dedication for a lengthy period of time and contributed to the stewardship of the Shorthorn Breed. This award recognizes their efforts in breeding and promoting Shorthorn cattle which have contributed to genetic improvement of the breed. They are also recognized as individuals that have continuously been supporters and promoters for both the Shorthorn breed and the beef cattle industry. Builder of the Breed award winners are recognized for making a lasting impact on our breed.

Laurence Pathy Laurence Pathy graduated with a BA from Princeton University—went on to Law School at New York University. He never practiced law because he went into the family shipping business until he recently retired in 2010. Laurence knew nothing about farming or the cattle business when he acquired his first Shorthorns in 1973, the year he bought Shadybrook Farm. But the Shorthorn breed quickly became an important part of his life. And has remained important in his and his family’s life. He now has a herd of 120 Shorthorn cows. They have been having Production sales at the farm – every two

years—since 1984. Shadybrook Farms have had a number of National Champion bulls and females in Canada. Laurence was a director of the ASA for a total of 12 years. He served for 6 years and after a break served another 6 years. For part of that time he served as the Vice President and as a member of the Executive Committee. Laurence is the only Canadian to have served on the ASA Board. Shadybrook has been honored to have received a Century Club award several times over the years. He has also been a director of the Shorthorn Foundation since 2004. Laurence and his wife Constance have two sons – Mark and Paul with wives Jess and Marie-Michelle, plus 5 grandkids. Paul is now running the family shipping business. Shadybrook Farm is honored to receive the Builder of the Breed Award this year. =

John Sullivan John Sullivan grew up showing cattle with his brother. They showed and taught each other along the way. John’s parents taught them a strong work ethic that has been carried on the rest of his life. His parents supported showing livestock but had a bigger interest in the feedlot and commercial cow-calf operations. In 1989, John and Dede Sullivan established Sullivan Farms and Sullivan Supply in Dunlap, Iowa. Sullivan Farms is currently a 500 head cow calf operation with deep roots in Shorthorn and

ShorthornPlus genetics. Sullivan Farms has marketed genetics to cattlemen in 47 states, Canada and international markets. John and Dede’s daughters, Sara and Sage take a active roll in the cattle operation as well. John is a strong believer in the youth of agriculture and always takes the next step in his support of the youth in the Shorthorn breed and agricultural industry. He offers $20,000 of scholarships each year through Sullivan Supply which really shows his dedication and support of the youth. He says they are the future of our industry so we must support them. John is passionate about the breed and privileged to receive the Builder of the Breed Award. =

Farewells

Bruce Franklin Leemon, 41, of Hoopeston, Ill., passed away Friday November 24, 2017 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston, Ill. He was born October 11, 1976, in Hoopeston, Ill., the son of Charles E. and Dixie (Shoemaker) Leemon. He married Courtney Seymour on August 2, 2008. She survives in Hoopeston. He is survived by his parents; two daughters, Isabella and Sophie Leemon both of Hoopeston, Ill.; one sister, Laura (Jeff ) Leemon-McGinnis of Westmin-

ster, Colo.; his paternal grandmother, Elaine Leemon of Hoopeston, Ill.; six nieces and nephews, Caleb, Hannah, Zoe, Jude, Luke and Mara Seymour and many cousins, Katrina and Twyla Watkins, Jeremy, Melanie, Holly and Matthew Shoemaker, John, Jeff and Adam Barten, Adam and Steve Winzenburger, Matt Payne and Cody, Wes, and Clint Leemon. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Glen and Thelma Shoemaker; paternal grandfather, Charles B. Leemon and three uncles, Kevin Payne, Scott Leemon and Max Watkins. Bruce worked for Champaign Danville Grain Inspection for 20 years. He

was an active member of the Prairie Green Church of Christ where he was currently serving on the church board and was a past president of the board. He was also a member of the Hoopeston Boosters 4-H Club and coached his daughter Isabellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s t-ball and little league teams. Bruce won many awards showing cattle including having Grand Champion Heifer in the Junior Shorthorn Show at the 1989 North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky.
