Association Outlook
Montie D. asa executive Soules secretary/CEO
Finishing up 2020 and Starting 2021
H
ere we are at the beginning of 2021. An optimistic outlook for the new year is always refreshing, especially after a year like 2020. As we move forward into 2021 the pandemic and all the related restrictions and changes are not over. The vaccination for Covid-19 is sure a bright spot looking forward and is viewed as “the light at the end of the tunnel” to get Covid-19 under control. We cattle breeders understand viruses and vaccinations, possibly better than most of the non-agricultural population. We’ve had sickness move through a set of calves and have often treated them, when in reality it had to run its course until a vaccination for that specific virus became available. Now, with a vaccination we may be able to return to some form of normality, but until then, the pandemic will continue to affect activities for Shorthorn breeders everywhere. One of the first major changes we had last fall was postponing the Annual Meeting to February 5 & 6, 2021. As of this writing we plan to have the same program. We refunded all registration fees for last December. There is a registration form on the Website to reregister for this important ASA function. I encourage everyone to make plans to attend. If the Covid-19 restrictions have not been lifted or eased, we will have a virtual meeting for delegates to elect the Board of Directors for the year. Please continue to look for updates about this meeting with the Association E-blasts and Insider, along with Facebook posts. We will try to give you as much notice as possible if it becomes necessary to cancel the in-person meeting on Feb. 6th and move to a virtual type meeting. Another postponement from 2020 is the Deck the Stalls fundraiser for the Junior National which is normally held in Louisville during the North American. 10
However, due to no spectators being allowed at the NAILE, we postponed it to be part of the Annual Meeting last fall and then that was canceled. Now, we will hold the Deck the Stalls fundraiser during the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City on Sunday afternoon after the Yards Show on January 10, 2021. We hope to have this auction broadcast on CCi.Live as well, so those of you who cannot be present in Oklahoma can still participate. This is one of the major fundraisers we hold each year to sponsor the Shorthorn Junior National; the largest and most attended event in the breed. Along with the new date, time and location of the Deck the Stalls fundraiser and as a result of the iconic National Western being canceled, a group was formed to host a replacement; the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. There are record numbers entered for this event. Over 700 head of Shorthorns are entered including the Yards Show and halter classes which would have been on “the hill”. This show/event is set to be one of the biggest and best winter shows the breed has ever seen. All cattle folks are welcome to attend. There is no parking or gate admission, just show up and become part of this inaugural event. The hotels are only a couple miles from the show grounds and for those who fly into OKC, the airport is only 3 miles from the show grounds. This is a handy spot and more centrally located. We expect a big crowd and a great show of Shorthorn cattle. There is still time to make plans to attend. Don’t forget about “The Summit” National Shorthorn Sale that will be held in the Barn 3 Sale Arena (Cattlemen’s Club) with a pre-sale social on Monday night, January 11 following the Junior Shorthorn Show and Open ShorthornPlus Show. Then, on Tuesday morning January 12, the Open Purebred
shorthorn country = january 2021
Shorthorn Show will conclude the Shorthorn events. Please continue to check the Cattlemen’s Congress website, ASA Insider, and Facebook posts for possible schedule changes and updates. As I stated at the beginning of this month’s Association Outlook, we have a lot to look forward to this new year as we first work at finishing up 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world. We have seen many new ways to go about our daily lives. Maybe we should have been more aware before, but now that we have dealt with surviving and learning how to deal with the virus, I think we will all be better off in 2021 – which will bring on our new normal! Have a Happy & Prosperous New Year! =

Scouting Your Competition If you regularly read this column, by now you know that I am prone to use my page in the Shorthorn Country to build some analogies tying together the things I know and enjoy most: beef cattle production and sports. As we start 2021, I feel that might be the best way to kick off this year of articles. Hopefully, those of you that aren’t big sports fans don’t find these topics too alienating or boring. Before I found gainful employment in the breed association sector out of grad school, many fall Saturdays were spent either in the football stadium of my alma mater, or on the couch watching every game I could. Over time, the style and philosophy of offense in college football has completely evolved. Offensive strategy used to be focused on being stronger and more powerful than your opponent on defense. Plays were run from offensive formations with most of the 11 players close to each other, hoping to create space for a running back to gain yards. Passing the football was much less common across the sport, but there were a few coaches who built their strategy completely different than the norm. These coaches felt that if they spread out their players in formation across the field, then the defense must spread out to cover those players. Once you spread out the defensive players, there are more gaps and spaces for an offense to successfully gain yards and score points. As a kid, I remember watching coach Steve Spurrier at the University of Florida use this spread out type of offense. He won a lot of games and championships using this philosophy. Because football coaches all want
12
to win games, they study film on their opponents, looking for weaknesses they can exploit with their game plan. Because football coaches are also good copycats, they find things from other teams to incorporate into their own playbook. Eventually, other coaches started adapting some of these new spread tactics to fit their team, and a revolution was born. Today, you are hard pressed to find a college football game where both teams aren’t running some variation of the now commonplace “spread offense”. The game was forever changed by some coaches looking for an advantage that weren’t afraid to try something new. The principles of scouting and evaluating those around you can easily be applied to our business. As a cattle breeder, I feel it is part of my responsibility to study what others are doing in their operations that I can incorporate into my own. By watching more successful programs, I have picked up some pieces that I can adapt and adopt to hopefully make my herd better. It could be a genetic line I have not considered using, a marketing tactic to employ, or a new twist on customer service after the sale. During bull sale season, I will read catalogs featuring every major breed in the cattle industry from breeders in every corner of the United States. Some of the neatest things I have learned have come from outside my region and from a different breed. If I stayed just within my realm of interest, I might not have ever picked up some valuable information. As a Shorthorn breeder, if you aren’t spending some time studying outside of the breed, I challenge
shorthorn country = january 2021
you to do so. Identify some breeders in your region that aren’t raising red, white, and roan cattle, but align with your goals and are successful. Notice what they focus on in their programs and see if you can find a way to implement something similar. You might surprise yourself with what you learn. While it may seem like a fruitless endeavor to some to study nonShorthorn magazines and catalogs, I can promise you that there have been things drawn from others that have allowed me to do my work for ASA better. Programs like the Genomically Enhanced Female Program were born from studying other breeds’ similar programs and making some adjustments to better fit the needs of Shorthorn breeders. You will likely see some new graphics in bull sale catalogs this spring to help better educate buyers on EPDs and indexes. The idea was born from seeing a similar piece in another breed’s leading bull sale catalog, and then adapted to fit the Shorthorn breed with input from the Genetic Evaluation Committee. While we all need to be focused on what is going on in the Shorthorn breed, looking out the window to see what those around us are doing can help us be even stronger. This year, make it a point to learn something new from another operation outside your usual circle of influence. You don’t have to go as far as changing your entire philosophy, but maybe you want to give your operation a “spread offense” type of rejuvenation. Even a small tweak or two might be just the adjustment you need to score a big victory in your herd in 2021. =

No matter who you are, you are going through one of the most challenging times you will ever face. It is easy to fall victim to the ever-pressing disasters of politics, pandemic, drought, riots, economy, and honestly the list goes on. At this point there is a good chance that the only calm you feel is when you get to go outside and check those beautiful Shorthorns in your pasture. That is where I challenge you to also appreciate all the other normal things in your life. One thousand things that happen every day are still happening. The sun rose this morning and the birds still chirped at the sight of light, the cows still came to water and yes, you had to walk out in the freezing cold this morning to break ice. Regardless of what happens, agriculture is still here, we are resilient, we are optimists and dreamers of better days through better ways. We will keep showing up, keep on keeping on. This has been true for all of existence and anyone who thinks otherwise can try to live without us, but they will fail. Do not let your faith in our lifestyle and beliefs
waver, rather stay strong and steady. Keep raising your cattle with passion and your children with love, for this too shall pass. Keep supporting your fellow breeders and investing in your herd, for this too shall pass. Travel to the spring sales and tell other Shorthorn enthusiasts how your cows are bred to calve this spring, for this too shall pass. Attend every show and event offered, if not only to prove to those non-believers that this too shall pass. We are agriculture, we are resilient. When we get knocked down we come back stronger. When we lose one means of working we come up with two more. Tonight, the sun will set just like it has at the end of every day before. But tonight, when you lay your head down for sleep, I encourage you to think about all of the blessings you experienced in the last 24 hours. Appreciate what is okay, and know that whatever isn’t can be dealt with tomorrow. Wake up each morning and know that whatever you face, you will survive. Because you are agriculture, you are resilient. =

Investing in the Future The Shorthorn Youth Development Fund (SYDF) was established in 2020 to provide financial support that will sustain and expand excellent programming to develop Shorthorn youth as cattle producers and responsible, productive citizens. Since we started our new fundraising program many breeders have donated lots in their sales to become part of the Shorthorn Royal Society. On November 7 during the ‘Durham Nation’ sale, several breeders donated lots in support of the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund. The host of the sale, Derek Jungels sold 1 cane of semen on JSF Wall Street

Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year - Scott Winkle by Shelby Diehm
Scott Winkle receiving the Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year Award at the 2020 NAILE.
In 1985, his parents, Jeff and Susie Winkle, started Cedar Lane Farms in Cedarville, Ohio, after working for Isaac’s Land and Cattle. Once Scott reached 4-H age, Jeff and Susie decided to get back into the Shorthorn breed. Jeff’s family had been involved since the 1920’s, making Scott a third generation Shorthorn breeder. The Winkle’s purchased a bred cow from the McLaughlin (10 M’s) family and a bull from Waukaru Farms. This allowed Scott to start building his own herd as a junior member and he has been expanding it for the last 10 years. Scott spent eight years working for and traveling with his childhood friend, Josh Greenhorn and the Greenhorn Cattle Company. He is recognized by those in the cattle industry as someone that is always willing to help whether that be dialing one in or pep talks outside the ring. Since 2014, Scott and his girlfriend Katie have been the Ohio Junior Shorthorn Association advisors, leading 18
the state to multiple Outstanding State Awards at the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference. Scott and Katie assist junior members attending the NJSS with their projects, speeches and more. The role as advisor has showcased his passion for building youth in order to build our breed. When not working as a machinist in Cincinnati, Ohio, he devotes his time to helping the Kennedy Family of Seaman, Ohio, as well as other juniors and their families across Ohio. Cedar Lane Farm raised CLF Foolin’ Around 1401 ET, a Sonny son out of a full sib to CF Bravo. This bull was a three time undefeated Ohio and Kentucky State Fair Grand Champion Bull. Many of his calves have gone on to be successful at NAILE, NJSS and other shows. Scott enjoys working with his family at Cedar Lane Farm while assisting juniors all across Ohio. The Herdsman of the Year is a prestigious award sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation and honored with a trophy buckle in memory of Lawrence

Grathwohl. Lawrence Grathwohl was a loyal member of the ASA who passed at the young age of 41. He was best known for raising Shorthorn cattle, which he showed all across the country. The award is voted on by fellow Shorthorn breeders and announced during the National Shorthorn Show each year. Congratulations to Scott Winkle for being selected by his peers for this special award - The 2020 Lawrence Grathwohl Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year. It is well deserved. =

We feel this is a special female that can show with the best of them and also be a herd changing donor. She is a moderate framed sound structured female that is very three dimensional in her build. She is out of a new exciting young donor that brings in some different genetics to the show cattle gene pool. I can definitely see this female raising a big time herd bull in the future. Due January 15, 2021; bred to 3ACES Skyfall 9576 (Angus) SULL SWEET DREAMS 9134G comes from a long line of the most dominate genetics in the shorthorn breed. Her full sisters have finished in the top 5 at the NJHS in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. This female is also a full sister to the dominate SULL Dream On 5158c that is the dam of the 2020 NAILE Grand Champion bull SULL Dream Maker that was also recently syndicated for $70,000. Sweet Dreams will hold her own in this long line of success in this decorative cow family. She was selected as a calf at the 2020 NWSS as the Grand Champion female in the Jr show and carried that success into the 2020 NJHS where she was selected as the Reserve Grand champion female. Her added foot size and bone worked combined with her structural correctness and extra body mass will make this powerful female a dominate donor for years to come. If you’re serious about raising elite shorthorns with elite genetics this female without a doubt will be one to add to your program. Sullivan Farms will retain two successful flushes on SULL SWEET DREAMS 9134G. CONSIGNED BY: SULLIVAN FARMS, 402-650-1380

Assembling a pen of animals that match up in type and kind is not easy. Now try to match them up in color. Well this pen of heifers checks all the boxes, and by the way all three are really good. The two ET flush mates are so similar it is hard to tell them apart from day to day. Marvel 173H ET and Marvel 178H ET hale from an awesome cow. 978W is going on 12 years old and looks as good as the day we acquired her on the Durham Nation sale from JSF. These two will be cows in your herd for many years. Kendra 192H is out of a bull that needs no introduction after this past Durham Nation sale. JSF Battlefront stamps them with eye appeal and structurally sound. This heifer is good and she knows it as you can tell from her picture and video. She will show at any level and when she is done showing will make you money producing outstanding offspring.

To say the day Reverence was born at the farm was a great day, is an understatement at best. With the mating of his mother, KOLT WW Sable Girl 533Y ET, who was the Junior Calf Champion in Denver in 2012, and our herd sire SULL RGLC Legacy 525, the 7 time National Champion Bull, we envisioned the next sire the Shorthorn breed needed. Reverence’s phenotype is near perfect with incredible stride and reach in his movement. He is extremely stout in his structure and design which compliments his muscle design. We believe he is a bull with that extra “punch and power” that is needed in the current gene pool used in the Shorthorn breed. Conversation around the farm all summer amongst ourselves and the visitors that have seen Reverence is that he could be a better version of his daddy. That is saying a lot, and we believe at this stage of his life he is. CONSIGNED BY: ROCKIN G LAND & CATTLE, 217-737-7905 & SULLIVAN FARMS, 402-650-1380

At the crossroads of Generating Potential and Show Ring Success sits ASM MAGA. An own son of CF S/F Ultimate Reward, this impressive individual has already caught the eye of many. His length and extension coupled with a truly bold upper rib shape and sweep through his lower rib should lend itself to building daughters that can replicate, if not surpass, his own show ring success. Having already hung banners as a division champion at both Shorthorn Junior Nationals and the American Royal, bid with confidence on a herd sire prospect that puts maternal merit, visual performance, and quality together in one package. Sire - Muridale Thermal Energy 15A
Waukaru Pendleton 0061 is the combination of mainstay genetics from across North America. Sired by the Canadian bred and internationally prepotent sire Thermal Energy who has designed easy fleshing progeny that result in calving ease with growth coupled with marbling and red meat yield. Waukaru Pendleton 0061 is the product of the Red Nan cow family. The Red Nans have been vital at Waukaru for 50 years and have recently built globally dominant sires such as Gold Card 5042, Patent 8161, and Orion 2047. The first nonsurgical embryo flush ever initiated at Waukaru in 1978 was the foundation dam, Red Nan 504. Waukaru Pendleton 0061 is a powerfully constructed sire that is bold through his chest and rugged with huge turn to his rib cage that traces back to Red Nan 504. Pendleton 0061 displays as much honest shape and dimension of real muscle as one can find. His dam, sired by Patent 8161, posts a combined progeny birth ratio of 103, weaning at 103 and yearling at 103. Pendleton 0061 lands in the top 1% for $BMI, top 4% for $FEED, WEPD, YEPD, Total Maternal, and REA as well as the top 10% for CEM, CED, CW and STAY. Here is a “real deal” cow herd changing herdsire in whom Waukaru has complete confidence. Waukaru Farms, Inc. is retaining a silent, in-herd only semen interest.

LEAVE FRONTIER DSF PHAF THF LEAVE ELVIRA X1013 ET DSF PHAF THF X4210704 LEAVE ADELAIDA-T/E DSF PHAF THF We’re taking the unusual step of sharing our extremely limited bank of 100% pure Argentine genetics because of the success we’ve had with ARG Hector and his siblings. We embarked on the Argentine project to introduce proven, outcross genetics for calving ease, low maintenance, ease of fleshing, moderate size, and thickness with balance and eye-appeal to the Shorthorn breed of North America. The Cabaña Santa Cecilia advertisement recognizes the herd’s 60 years within the framework of the 2021 Bicentennial of Shorthorns in Argentina. The three embryos we are offering are full siblings to ARG Hector 1777 ET, sired by the 2013 Palermo Grand Champion “Matias Star” and out of the 2016 Palermo Supreme Champion, “Elvira.” Breeders using Hector across the U.S. are finding that Argentine genetics crossed on North American cattle are producing bulls and females that are stout and deep and grow remarkably well on forages. These embryos are stored by EastGen in Guelph, Ontario. We will provide connections for accessing Canadian recipients for your ET project. We can say without reservation that the risk of our venture has been worthwhile because the rewards are unmatched. You can be assured that this offer will not be repeated – ever!

Dam Sprys Aces Primrose K45
We purchased the North American Semen rights on Spry’s Heritage P73 while on the World Shorthorn Tour in Australia last fall. P73 excelled in overall phenotype, structural soundness, and fleshing ability. He was a standout in his contemporary group for mass and dimension. When Gerald showed us their cowherd, we loved every female that went back to P73’s cow family. They were a group of beautiful females - uniform in design and moderate in size with beautiful udders. When viewing them from behind, we were impressed by their capacity and dimension. P73’s dam, Spry’s Aces Primrose K45, has raised P73 and another bull that both sold for $24,000 at auction. We are excited to see P73’s progeny and his impact in the U.S. Semen is stored at Hawkeye Breeders in the United States and Alta Genetics in Canada. We will be marketing a limited amount of semen. He has been 50K tested and also tested negative for myostatin. He is homozygous polled. Make sure to check out P73’s video that was taken while he was at stud last February: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM6GAZ9dizk CONSIGNED BY: DTR CATTLE COMPANY, 785-587-7947

News & Notes Farewells Charles Laverne Obrecht was born on February 4, 1939 to Donald L. Obrecht and Helen (Jensen) Obrecht on a farm west of Corley, Iowa. Later, he moved with his family to a farm southwest of Harlan where he grew up. He attended Center #7 (Windy Knoll) Country School through the 8th grade, and then went to Harlan High School where he graduated in 1957. He was united in marriage to Judy Kinsinger of June 5, 1966 at the Methodist Church in Grundy Center, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Walnut for six years. They then purchased a farm near Jacksonville and moved there in 1972 where he spent the remainder of his life. To this union, three sons were born: Donald Dean, Charles William and Gregory Laverne. Charlie’s passion has always been his Shorthorn cattle. He showed them at shows across the country, including Chicago International; San Antonio,
60
Texas Livestock Exposition; Fort Worth, Texas; Louisville, Kentucky; Kansas City American Royal; Denver; Nebraska State Fair, Ak-sar-ben; and for over 67 years at the Iowa State Fair. His fondest memory was showing his Shorthorn steer, Willie, at the International Livestock Show in Chicago, in Denver, at San Antonio, Texas where he was the Reserve Grand Champion Steer, and in Fort Worth and Austin, Texas. Charlie’s interest centered around the cattle as a member of the Shelby County Cattlemen, and serving as county president and also as a District officer. He has been a member of the Iowa Shorthorn Association where he served as State President for two years, and also as a member of the American Shorthorn Association. When his children were old enough to join 4-H, he helped restart the Jackson Jets 4-H Club as a 4-H Leader. He strongly supported his children and grandchildren in their activities including sports, showing livestock, and farming. Charlie could talk to anyone, never knew a stranger, and always had a story or a joke to tell. Charlie died on November 25, 2020 at

the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, Judy of 54 years; sons Donald (Jennifer) and Chuck (Renietta) both of Harlan; seven grandchildren: Allyssa, Wyatt, Addison, Reanna, Ryleigh, Cheyenne and Coy; siblings, Donna Scheel, Karla Lemon, Lyle (Carol) Obrecht, Larry (Sally) Obrecht, all of Harlan and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Helen Obrecht and his son, Gregory in 1986. The Tradition: Some folks just don’t get it. They think owning cattle makes no sense. It takes too much time, too much equipment, not to mention the expense. But the fondest memories of my life - they might think sounds funny - were made possible by Mom and Dad, ‘cause they spent the time and spent the money. You see, the most important lessons helping values grow so strong, come from loving cattle and passing that tradition on. =
