Junior Board members will be allowed to finish out their term even if they age out of showing. The AJSA junior board application can be found at juniorshorthorn.com. Junior Board candidates are required to attend Youth Conference I, II and III as well as a junior board interview. Email shelby@shorthorn.org for any questions about running for the junior board. • Junior members turning 22 in 2017, your Junior membership is good through Dec. 31, 2017. At that time you will need to become an adult member by January 1, 2018 to maintain membership in ASA. You are still eligible to show at the Junior National in 2017 if you turn 22 anytime during the 2017 year. • New age requirement for Junior Nationals! Starting January 1, 2017 the age to show at the Junior National has been lowered to 7. The junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child was born on 12/15/2009 they will be eligible to show at the 2017 Junior Nationals in Tulsa because they were 7 on January1, 2017.

I

n March, the Shorthorn Breed will publish its first Genomically Enhanced EPDS. We have waited a long time for these combined EPD calculations. We will also add to the list of traits a Stayability EPD formulated with state of the art software, Bolt, which is the new one-step software system. I will explain the difference in the calculating process for the Genomically Enhanced EPDs which we will be receiving for BW, WW, YW and CW. and the process of calculating Stayability. Matt Woolfolk, our new Director of Performance Programs will define and explain the details of the Stayability EPD on page 68. Many of you may have heard the terms “one-step” and “blended” in relationship to Genomically Enhanced EPDs; let’s look at the differences between these processes and the method used to calculate our EPDs for the past 25 years. First, the Shorthorn breed is a partner with International Genetic Solutions (IGS), a group of 12 cattle breeds (over 18 million head) which makes up the largest multi-breed genetic evaluation in the world, producing EPDs comparable among all the participating breeds in the same data bank. These EPDs have been calculated with the Cornell System software developed at Cornell University about 25 years ago. Once the capability to detect trait-related DNA markers and the Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs) was developed, then the blended process combined these values with the EPDs calculated from the Cornell software. This is known as blending for Genomically Enhanced EPDs. The Shorthorn Breed will be publishing, for the first time, this type of Genomically Enhanced EPDs for BW, WW, YW and CW in March. This blending process used for these Shorthorn traits comes from parameters that have been developed and proven by the multi-breed genetic evaluation. The science indicates there are similar DNA markers across breeds that have a high or direct influence on these traits. The Blending Process for the genomics only influences the direct animals having the equivalent of 50K DNA or better in the system. In the Bolt software, the one-step process means, the DNA markers from the lab are directly inserted into the software running the genetic evaluation along with the phenotypes (performance data) and the pedigree. All this data is run simultaneously through the Bolt software. As a result, the DNA has an impact not only on the individual with DNA recorded, but also on all the cattle related to that individual. This enhances the accuracy for each of those animals impacted by the DNA. The Stayability EPD is calculated with Bolt one-step software using the entire IGS data bank. This is the first time the Stayability EPD has been produced from a multi-breed genetic evaluation; it is also the first EPD produced using the Bolt one-step system. These new EPDs released in March will have the benefits of 2 new technologies as part of their formulas and are comparable to the other IGS breed partners that are in our genetic evaluation. Shorthorn animals that have 50K equivalency will have EPDs denoted as GE-EPDs. The only traits that will be GE-EPDs at this time are BW, WW, YW and CW. The parameters used for these first Genomically Enhanced Shorthorn EPDs are the same parameters that will be used in Bolt when the entire IGS data bank is run through the one-step process. IGS is preparing to publish Genomically Enhanced EPDs for all traits using Bolt in the future. When they do publish, Bolt EPDs they will be released in steps, with growth traits first, then carcass traits and then maternal traits. I hope to see the growth traits run through Bolt with our next genetic evaluation. The new GE-EPDs for Shorthorn in some ways is a sneak preview to the upcoming full-blown one-step process. This month will mark a first for the Shorthorn Breed by publishing Genomically Enhanced EPDs. It has been a long time coming, and the old saying “good things come to those who wait” may be appropriate here. Many have been anxious to receive this data and have been waiting patiently. These new EPDs published in March provide one more step that continues to place Shorthorns in a competitive position within our industry for the future! =

Keith and Nadene have been active in Church, School, and Community activities for sixty years. They were inducted into the Kansas Master Farmer - Master Homemaker organization in 1990. They feel that their cattle operation contributed to this award. The Lauers’ daughter, Rita and husband Ellis Yoder, who live in McPherson County, Kan., and have three sons - Bradley, Kevin, and Lane Yoder. Keith said, “I am still farming and ranching - partly because I do not have anyone to take it over, which is due to the fact that our grandsons all graduated from Kansas-State University, and the professors made all of them into Mechanical Engineers!” Keith feels the Commercial part of his business has been important, by supplying “sound” and productive cattle in numbers to commercial cattlemen; such as supplying 69 bulls in six years to a Nebraska breeder, 10 bulls each to breeders in CO. and WY., 40 heifers each for two breeders in KS., as well as the majority of customers who only need one bull at a time. Great satisfaction has come from being able to supply breeding stock to such outstanding operations as Deer Trail Ranch, KS; Waukaru Farms, IN; Jungels Polled Shorthorns, ND; Leveldale Farms, IL; Loving Polled Shorthorns,KS; Sullivan Farms, IA; Hugh Moore & Sons, IL; Triple C Shorthorns, KS; Fischer Cattle Co., KS; Fieser Family Polled Shorthorns, KS; 5 J Farms, CO.; and many other good customers. Keith has been a member of the American Shorthorn Assoc. for 63 years. He still loves to raise good Polled Shorthorns, which when handled right, are so docile and their maternal traits are unbeatable! He feels many folks are “missing the boat” by not using good Shorthorn bulls on black cows. Having sold cattle to customers in thirteen states, Keith says, “The most enjoyable and lasting thingis not monetary, but good friends in many places. The few heifers that I had in my teens have proved to be more than a 4H project - - instead, a VOCATION. =

2017 Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year by Shelby Rogers

Bill Rasor, presenting the Lawrence Grathwohl award for Herdsman of the Year to Nate Tice.

The 2017 Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year is in honor of Lawrence Grathwohl, presented by the Grathwohl Family and sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation. This year the winner is Nate Tice. He has been a loyal and long-standing employee of Sullivan Farms. His job performance and numerous National Champions

speak for themselves, but more importantly it is the way Nate carries himself as a human being. Nate is highly competitive as all successful Show Barn Managers are, but what separates him from his peers is his ability to respect the competition and be a truly genuine person that is approachable, gets along with everyone

and that is a fantastic role model for young showman. Congratulations Nate on your success and we are proud to recognize you for your contributions to the Shorthorn breed and the show industry as a whole. (Look in next issue for a more detailed story about this deserving winner.) =

The Cumberland Cow Family mated well with the Low Rider bull. These three heifer calves exceeded our expectations. The 6902 heifer is complete in every dimension and is complimented with a beautiful roan color. 6922 is the most feminine of the three. We like 6908 for her soundness and body design. Cumberland 8425 continues to give us sale quality cattle year after year.

= Beef Business Stayability EPDs: ASA’s Newest Selection Tool This spring brings exciting new tools for Shorthorn breeders to use in genetic selection. For the first time, genomically enhanced (GE) EPDs will be available to breeders for growth traits. For more information on this new technology, see Montie’s “Association Outlook” on page 12. In addition to the GE- EPDS for growth traits, a new GE-EPD for Stayability (STAY) will be available to Shorthorn breeders. The most economically impactful trait in beef cattle production is longevity. The members of International Genetic Solutions (IGS), a multi-breed genetic evaluation, including ASA, developed the STAY EPD as a tool to identify animals with genetic potential to produce daughters that stay in the herd longer. The STAY EPD is part of the IGS multibreed evaluation and can be compared to

STAY EPDs in other IGS breeds. Stayability is the probability of an animal’s daughters staying in the herd until six years of age. The six year old benchmark is used for the STAY EPD because, in general, the average cow reaches her breakeven point as a six year old. Simply put, most cows have to stay around this long in order to make money. The STAY EPD is expressed as a percentage. When comparing two bulls, if Bull A has a STAY EPD of +7, while Bull B has a STAY EPD of +2, you would expect 5% more daughters of Bull A to stay in the herd to the age of six. The STAY EPD is calculated using a method known as the single step method. The single step method combines phenotypic data, pedigree records and DNA results to calculate EPDs via BOLT, the software used for

Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs

single step method calculations. Analysis of DNA testing results has found that there are genes that significantly impact stayability, both positively and negatively. Some of these genes are found across multiple breeds, while others have been discovered as unique to the Shorthorn population. For STAY EPDs, a cow’s lifetime calving records are important to collect as we continue to build the database. Currently, there over 900,000 Shorthorn records in the database. Be sure to study the new STAY EPDs this spring, and hopefully you can use them in genetic selections. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have = any questions!

Calf Registration & Disposal Codes: Do’s and Don’ts Nearly everyone has seen the “Disposal” drop down menu when recording calving records in the Digital Beef registry. If you have calves that you do not plan to register, but need to submit the information on the dams on your WHR inventory, using the Disposal menu is the proper way to do so. Calves

that die prior to weaning or are sold commercially should be noted using the Disposal menu, in order to maintain a complete record for your herd inventory. However, if you have calves that you plan to sell as purebred stock, do not use the “Sold before weaning” disposal code. Short term problems arise as this animal

is removed from the registry and can not be transferred to the new owner. Long term, maintaining proper disposal codes will allow us to build our database for the Stayability EPD that will be added to our suite of genetic selection tools. =

Keys to Correct Contemporary Groups When entering calving records into the registry, it’s important to maintain proper contemporary groups, even if the data is not all entered at once. It’s necessary to have correct calving groups, as calving contemporary groups impact all your future contemporary groups (weaning, yearling, etc.). Calves of the same sex, age, and similar management practices should be grouped together

68

(Example: all your fall heifer calves from Pasture 1). If you enter your calf crop into the registry in several different sessions, you must indicate which contemporary group each calf belongs to. To do this, use management codes (the “Mgmt” box) and the “Season” drop down menu when submitting calves to the registry. All calves in a contemporary group must have the same management

shorthorn country = march 2017

code and same season submitted in order to be properly grouped together. If these are not used, the registry will groups calves by the day they are submitted. To avoid future problems, be sure to doublecheck your contemporary groups before submitting them to the registry! =

=Tartan Plaid Meet the Board National Shorthorn Lassie Board Members 2016-2017. With a new year, come new changes with the National Shorthorn Lassie Board Members. The National Shorthorn Lassies serves as the women’s auxiliary of the American Shorthorn Association. Officially organized in 1956, Lassies encourage and extend the influence of Shorthorn Breeding, promote the interest of its membership, stimulate greater activity, and cultivate closer relationships. The Lassies also arrange exhibits at national shows, present awards, publicize the breed provide reception committees, and conduct activities that pertain to the National Queen contest and other promotional activities. As president of the board, I would like to take a moment to introduce the amazing women you will see represent the Lassies throughout the year. P res ident: Jessica McCall from Louisville, Ky. Over the past few years I have been on the National Shorthorn Lassie Board serving as Secretary and Ways and Means Chair following my reign as National Shorthorn Lassie Queen from 2012-2013. I have since graduated with my Masters degree in Organizational Communication from Murray State University. I have been employed with the United State Department of Agriculture: Farm Service Agency as a County Program Technician for the past year and a half. I have a strong passion for agriculture and I love to help other women in agriculture become more influential in our industry. Vice-President: Shay Bakenhus from Columbus, Neb. Ms. Bakenhus has been on our board for the past year and previously served as the publicity chair. Her daughter, Macy Bakenhus, was crowned 2015-2016 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. She is very active on her family farm and is passionate about the Shorthorn industry. The Bakenhus Family has been raising Shorthorns for over 75 years. Over the years the family has received several awards including Builder of the Breed and was recently honored at the National Meeting for the many years of Shorthorn involvement. Shay's family includes husband Ward, (former National Shorthorn Board member), Josh and Annie (grandchildren Gage and

70

Ellison), Jacob and Shelby, Levi and Macy. Josh, Jacob, Levi and Macy are the 5th generation to breed and show Shorthorns. Shay also is active with the Neb. Jr. Association and works at Neighborworks Northeast Nebraska, a non-profit organization specializing in finding housing for low-income residents. She is happy to serve the association however she can. Se cretar y: Sydney Miller from Charlotte, Michigan. Sydney has been an active member of the National Shorthorn Junior Association since she was a little girl. She was our 2013-2014 National Alternate Shorthorn Lassie Queen. She is a fifth generation Shorthorn breeder and is very passionate about the industry. Treas urer: Pam Dressen from Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Ms. Dressen has been serving on the National Shorthorn Lassie Board for many years and has been a huge influence within our organization. She has a passion for agriculture and the Shorthorn breed. As a former Lassie, she loves to help young women grow within our industry and make lasting friendships along the way. Publicity Chair: Angel Dornak from Damon, Texas. Ms. Dornak is the mother of our current National Alternate Queen, Shelby Armstrong. She is also the mother of Brooke, 23. Her daughter Shelby has been involved in the Shorthorn Association serving two years as a Texas Shorthorn Lassie Princess and as the Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen. She supports Shelby with StrongArm Cattle Company providing cattle for kids who do not have the means of having their own cattle. Angel is currently serving her third year as the Vice President of the Texas Shorthorn Lassie Association. She oversees the Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen and Princesses at all shows and events. Queen Chair: Gwen Crawford is previously from Nebraska and now resides in Kathryn, ND, with her significant other, Derek Jungels and his son Brock. She came from a small cattle operation; so being a part of Jungels Shorthorn Farm where Derek maintains a spring calving herd of over 325 head has been quite the eye opener for her. She enjoys helping with JSF’s female sale in the fall and bull sale in February. Crawford, once a Lassie

shorthorn country = march 2017

herself, went to Forth Worth the one and only year they held the National contest there. Although she may not have been chosen as the National Queen, she was selected as Miss Congeniality. This award was voted on by the other contestants and is one of her fondest memories with the Lassies Queen Chair: Elaine Dragstrem, from Amboy, Ind. She resides on her family farm consisting of corn, soybeans, and Shorthorn Cattle, with her husband, Bob and two daughters Megan, 21, and Allison, 18. Her daughters have been very involved in the Shorthorn Association and thus, as a parent, she has become involved. She grew up raising and showing Shorthorns in 4-H at the county and state level. She always had a dream of being a Lassie when she was young, but fell short of that dream. With her daughter, Megan, being crowned 20122013 National Alternate Lassie Queen and Allison, 2013 Indiana Lassie Princess, she has had the opportunity to become very involved and work hand in hand with the Lassie Association. In November 2013 she had the opportunity to serve as a member of the National Lassie Board of Directors. Director: Cari Pennington from Grandview, Texas. She lives on a small cattle farm raising Shorthorn cattle with her husband, Rick and teaches 4th grade where she instills the love of agriculture into her students. Her family has been involved with raising Shorthorns for the last ten years. She has two daughters that attend Texas A&M University. Lauren, 24, is a third year veterinarian student and Danielle, 20, is an undergrad majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in ruminant nutrition. Danielle also serves on the Jr. National Board. Dire ctor: Roberta Francis from Fordville, North Dakota. Ms. Francis is the mother to past National Alternate Lassie Queen, Riley Francis 20152016. She is a full time Registered Nurse and loves to come home and help on the family farm. Roberta has served on the board for the past two years as Director. Dire ctor: MaLaine Strope from O’Neill, Neb. Ms. Strope is the mother of current National Shorthorn Lassie Queen, Tejlor Strope 2016-2017. MaLaine is a third generation

Shorthorn breeder and grew up showing cattle. She received her BS Degree in Accountancy from Kansas State University. She is currently the HR Director and CFO of Tri County Bank. Her husband, Boyd, is a past president of the ASA Board of Directors and their son; Berren is an active junior member. The entire Strope Family has a passion for the

livestock industry and plans to continue its involvement and support of the Shorthorn breed. As a board, we hope to encourage more participation within the National Shorthorn Lassie Association. You do not have to have any previous experience as a Lassie to become a part of our strong tradition within our

breed. Please feel free to visit our webpage at https://shorthorn.org/national-shorthornlassies/ and join our page on Facebook: National Shorthorn Lassies, for updates on our current Queens and their journey over this next year. =

=Junior Corner Calving Season As this year’s show season comes to an end whether it was successful year or unsuccessful the most import season for cattle producers is coming into full swing. Calving season is a stressful time of the year without a doubt. If you are young or old this season means everything; could have your next national champion born or just have another calf to help pay the bills. Before the craziness of this calving season comes into full swing it is important to have a plan and be up to date on all calving practices. Having a plan on your steps to follow is crucial to be successful. Having experience with dystocia is critical. If you do not have lots of experiences and know how to go about solving the calving issue don’t be afraid to talk to fellow breeders and get input and advice that could be beneficial to

you in the future. Another great way to be prepared is having a veterinarian that you can call at any time if the need arises. The obstacle after calving is keeping the calf healthy and alive. The biggest part of keeping a calf healthy is getting the calf properly vaccinated. Keeping up to date and researching the products that you using is always a great idea. Talking to your vet about what he thinks is the best course of action for vaccination to give you to best outcome. Talking to other breeders, veterinarians, and your own personal research is always good idea having other inputs or other way of doing things could potentially help you out immensely. Another thing that we as producers need to do is making sure we are taking all birthweights accurately. With the new EPD system we have the

Josh ajsa Lorenz director

numbers is very important for us as a breed. When calving we cannot forgot about our cows that do the producing. Making sure after they calve that the cow is healthy and uninjured is extremely important. Pinched nerves tearing the cows can be detrimental to the cow if not properly handled. The next few days will be crucial for the new calves. Remember to keep checking on the calf until it is up and moving well. Also making sure the calf has nursed and received colostrum is important. Tubbing may be needing if the calf refuses to nurse after some time. Hopefully everyone has a great and very productive calving season this year! =

More Fescue Management It appears the recent attention to fescue grass at the ASA Annual Meeting has a few folks discussing the issue. That’s good. However, it’s probably necessary to attack the topic from all angles; the most successful ‘fescue farmers’ are doing that anyway. There are far more ways to deal with the grass than to find your cows a new zip code or disperse the herd for more tolerant genetics. We’ll start at the beginning. If you, like me, are not a trained forage agronomist, fescue grass can be difficult to identify. I would encourage you to look at color photos online or pick up a forage identification book. Many Extension offices have these on hand. The simplest way to identify the grass is to grab a leaf by the tip and run your fingers along the edges downward towards the base of the leaf. If it feels like a serrated knife, it is likely tall fescue. The kind or species of fescue plant is much more difficult to spot with the naked eye. There are actually 3 main types of fescue that plant breeders and forage companies have developed over the years: 1.) Endophyte-free varieties, also known as non-toxic fescue, are not detrimental to cattle, but they are also less hearty and tolerant to grazing pressure. These varieties are not persistent in the south. As you move north, with shorter summers and less pressure from disease, insects, drought, and with deeper soils, they can persist better. If producers want this grass to survive long-term, it should not be overgrazed. 2.) Novel-endophyte varieties were developed by inserting different endophyte strains in to the fescue plant, but since endophytes occur naturally, it’s not a GMO grass! These grasses are more tolerant and aggressive, but also more expensive. 3.) Endophyte-infected varieties are what we most commonly see in pastures…and in road ditches, construction sites, etc. The grass establishes quickly, holds soil well, and persists in a drought, plus the seed is cheap. Many folks refer to this grass as “Kentucky 31,” though several varieties exist. If you have planted fescue on your farm and are unsure what variety was seeded down, try to find out. The proper management for each type of grass is slightly different. Many pastures thick with toxic tall fescue were never

seeded down to the grass by any farmer. Birds, deer and other animals carried the seed in from road ditches and other farms. Other cattle producers may have purchased toxic tall fescue hay and fed it on the pasture, or the cows seeded it down via feces when they were turned out. As a result, many farmers or ranchers don’t know they have the toxic grass; the fescue spread through the pasture over a number of years. As you move north in the United States, the success of fescue grass dwindles. The old toxic fescue performs well across a wide band of eastern and Midwestern states, and novel varieties also do well unless they are overgrazed. Given the cost of the seed, overgrazing can be a very expensive mistake. The endophyte-free varieties can thin out from overgrazing, drought, and pests. The further south you go, the less persistent they are because of the long summers and constant pressure from insects and diseases. The novel varieties do a bit better than endophyte-free ones. More recently, producers have tried to effectively eradicate the toxic grass and replace it with a better variety for their cows. One of the more popular methods is referred to as “SpraySmother-Spray.” In other words, use chemicals to kill everything including the toxic fescue, plant a smother crop like sorghum-sudan grass, then spray the pasture again to kill any remaining toxic fescue that remained in the seed bank. Weather can make this pretty challenging, there’s an obvious loss in production, and fence rows, steep terrain, and tree groves make it nearly impossible to achieve an adequate kill in some areas. Long story short, toxic tall fescue is likely here to stay. It is important to note that not all toxic tall fescue has the same level of “infection.” Some fields may have less endophyte than others. The endophyte itself actually helps the plant survive and produces the alkaloids (toxins) that harm the cow. The part of the plant is crucial as well; less endophyte exists in the leaves, much more in the seed head and the stems at the base of the plant. Consequently, mowing the seed head off or keeping the plant in a vegetative state has proven effective in spring pastures. Forcing cows to eat mature fescue plants (in a drought situation or overgrazing) is often when we see

problems like missing tail switches, poor reproductive performance, or “fescue foot,” where the feet actually die or freeze off from poor blood circulation. Ranchers can test their grass or hay for the alkaloid “ergovaline” to get an idea of the toxicity level. Making hay from toxic tall fescue reduces the toxin level by half as sun curing lowers toxin levels. Inter-seeding legumes like clovers and trefoil has proven effective at diluting tall fescue, offering a better ‘salad’ to the cows consuming forage. It works best if the fescue is grazed down tight or hayed in order to open up the canopy and allow sunlight to help the legumes grow. Remember, legumes produce their own nitrogen, which can reduce fertilizer needs. One common mistake producers make is applying heavy “N” fertilizer to pastures with toxic tall fescue. The fescue grass loves nitrogen and will grow at an alarming rate, smothering out other grasses and legumes in the mix. Nitrogen also feeds the toxins. Good intentions for pasture renovation often have the opposite effect in this scenario. Rotational grazing can be an effective management tool as well, keeping tall fescue in a vegetative state where cows are just asked to consume the leaf material. If the pasture has been renovated with novel or endophyte-free fescue, allowing ample recovery time will extend the life of the more desirable varieties. Again, if stocking rates are increased and/or drought conditions persist, some of the desired varieties will not likely survive the challenge. Some producers have found that overstocking pastures during heavy spring growth then relaxing the stocking rate through the summer helps take advantage of the growth pattern of the grass and limits the toxicity level. Many herds will turn stocker cattle on to fescue grass or even wean them later off the cow when grass growth slows in early summer. Obviously, this only works in a fall calving scenario where winter conditions are tolerable or (continued on page 78)

Applications due April 10 (continued from page 73) supplemental feed can be offered to meet the animals’ requirements. The increase in popularity of fall calving is a direct result of producers learning to manage toxic tall fescue. Another successful management tool with toxic fescue grass is stockpiling for winter grazing. If the producer can prevent the grass from producing a seed head, he/she can also take advantage of the substantial fall growth offered by the plant. The toxin levels increase through the early fall, so grazing can be delayed until late winter, when the toxin levels drop again. Keep in mind, when temperatures plummet in the winter months, poor blood circulation to the extremities can have severe consequences. Producers should test winter forages for nutritional levels and presence of toxins. Remember, you’re not spending all that money to cut, rake, bale, transport, and deliver hay to the cows. They do the baling for you and place the nutrients right back on the ground where you need them. Tall fescue does an amazing job of holding protein and feed value in stockpiled form, often exceeding the nutrient requirements of a gestating cow. If the grass is held under a snow pack, it can be tremendous winter feed. Cows can

78

bury their heads in over a foot of snow to consume forage…and gain weight doing it! Now, on to the cow. Regardless of breed or genetics, producers can do several things to help their herd thrive in a fescue environment. 1.) Acclimation – Cows that are accustomed to toxic fescue, on average, simply do better on the grass…and so do the calves they produce. That’s not to say that cows naïve to the grass cannot adjust, they can. The longer we give them to adjust before the challenges of lactation and rebreeding begin, the better. Much of the drive for the research discussed at the ASA Annual Meeting was to see if genomics can help us identify which cows do it better, regardless of their zip code. 2.) Supplementation – As the word implies, offering cows some better feed in addition to the fescue diet can help. Of course, added labor and feed costs make this a less desirable option for many producers. However, increased conception rates, tighter subsequent calving intervals, heavier weaning weights, and fewer health problems can help offset the added expense. Some commercial minerals also offer additives that can help cows maintain their body temperature and overall immune

shorthorn country = march 2017

function. Be sure to follow label instructions enforced by the new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) and consult your veterinarian if necessary. 3.) Shade – This may seem quite simple, but allowing a cow to cool her body temperature can help immensely with performance, displaying estrus, first service conception, etc. Adequate water supply can be beneficial as well; any calories a cow burns walking to water are calories she cannot put in to her calf. Likewise, a good blade of grass that’s too far from water likely won’t get consumed There are a number of other successful management strategies for toxic tall fescue not described in the article. I would strongly encourage producers to read up on the subject even if you don’t live in the Fescue Belt. I have included a number of resources for you to study at your leisure. http://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail. cfm?number=C861 http://www.oregontallfescue.org/publications /tall-fescue-endophyte-booklet.pdf http://extension.missouri.edu/p/G4669 https://plantsciences.missouri.edu/roberts/exte nsion/tallfescuetoxicosis.htm http://www.oregontallfescue.org/forage_info/ Forageinfo.html =

ease expert, DMH Cherry Fillet. Galbreath Farms from Enderlin, ND, brought her to town and Cole Brenden from Vienna, SD, took her home. We haven’t seen the last of her offspring at the Farm Show. Reserve Champion Purebred and Plus Females went to Stangl Shorthorns and Osterman Shorthorns respectively. Clay Osterday brought a purebred beauty named SBR Jerri 695D, while Jessican Osterman brought a half blood red & white show prospect named OS Dottie 65D out of their Proud Jazz bull. John Morrison of Belle Plaine, Minn., will show the deep, roan female, again and again next summer. Ketts Shorthorns of Storden, Minn., have just begun to see the donor potential of the March plus female. Always the highlight of any auction was the Bi Annual Junior Semen Auction. Thanks to all the buyers and breeders who donated semen lots for the South Dakota Junior Shorthorn Assn. We were able to raise $3,765 for the future of the Shorthorn Breed in South Dakota. =

February 7, 2017 Kathryn, North Dakota Auctioneer: Bruce Brooks Sale Management: Aegerter Marketing Services, Inc. by: Darryl Rahn

A good crowd gathered for the 2017 edition of Durhams in the Dakotas on a cool breezy day. Offered this year may well be the strongest set of herd bull prospects ever put together for this sale. This set of bulls excelled in EPD numbers that indicated calving ease, added performance and they had the look of herd bulls. The bidding was active throughout the sale from those in the sale arena as well as those on the phones and on the internet. Again this year, the JSF brand is spread throughout the land. From Utah to Texas to Maryland and Virginia as well as many points in between. Congratulations to the JSF crew for another great event. $25,000 - Lot 9 - JSF Chain Reaction 201D. A roan, polled, March 18, 2016

son of JDMC Big Sky 15X and out of JSF Golden Chain 38A. This is a powerful young sire. He has a great structure to go with the thickness you like to see. He is soft made and free moving. The Big Sky sons were well accepted at the sale. He will be a great one. Purchased by The Chain Reaction Group. Possession was purchased by Paint Valley Farm of Millersburg, Ohio. Other shareholders are Nick Anderson of Minn., Greg Beckler of Wooster, Ohio, Bret Buck of SD, DuLynn Farms of Ohio and Leveldale Farms of Ill. $20,000 - Lot 1 - JSF Justice 199D. A red, polled, March 18, 2016 son of Saskvalley Outlaw 173Z and out of JSF Patty 3Y. This was another very popular bull in this sale. His sire is proving to be a top sire at JSF and his dam is by Red Demand. A great combination. This bull has great style to go with the thickness and correct structure that make him a favorite. His numbers say that he will be a performance maker. Purchased by Nick Anderson of Blooming Prairie, Minn. $18,000 - Lot 3 - JSF Big Ticket 131D ET. A roan, polled, March 12, 2016 son of JDMC Big Sky 15X and out of KL Gold Rose. Another really good Big Sky son that has great calving ease numbers to go with built in performance. Out of a

top Lauer female in the JSF herd. He will be fun to follow. Purchased by Roger Haley of Waseca, Minn., and Semex Corp. $15,000 - Lot 8 - JSF Optimizer 261D. A red, polled, April 1, 2016 son of Saskvalley Optimal 220Z and out of Leveldale Blossom 112Y. This is another top bull with great performance numbers. This is a little different pedigree but this one has the thickness of structure and soundness to make him a top sire. Purchased by LaPlant Ranch of Binford, ND. $8,500 - Lot 24 - JSF Platinum 97D. A white, polled, March 8, 2016 son of Jake's Reincarnation 228Y and out of JSF Rhinestone 176A. This meat wagon could be a top sire when mated to females at his new home. He has the performance numbers to work in any program. Purchased by 4 Bar S Shorthorns of Bellville, Texas. $7,500 - Lot 5 - JSF Nasdaq 191D ET. A red, polled, March 18, 2016 son of JSF Broker 157Z and out of KL Gold Rose. The Broker sons were very well accepted in this sale. They have added performance in a desirable package. He is thick made and very correct on his feet and legs. Purchased by Matt and Tia Moore, Detroit Lakes, Minn. =
