WHR Breeders WHR Assessments for 2020 were sent in November. If you have not received yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2019 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2019.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) = Association Outlook The 2020 Challenge

pring is just around the corner as March 2020 rolls in. By now, we are all ready for winter to leave and look forward to embracing the next season. Folks are getting anxious to get crops into the ground; newborn Shorthorn calves have appeared in the pastures and new hope and prosperity are in the air. Already in 2020, enthusiasm for the Shorthorn breed was captured in both Denver and Fort Worth. The number of cattle exhibited in Denver was up in the yards and on the hill. The excitement and delight in seeing so many very good Shorthorn bulls and females was a great way to start the new decade. The stalls were buzzing with enthusiasm after the show and before the sale on Sunday night in Denver. The Shorthorn aisles were full of breeders and the sale was packed with people looking for the next opportunity to improve their herd. The Summit Sale was another success in the Mile-High City. Following the Denver show, many headed to Fort Worth for the National Shorthorn Show in Texas. This year, we had over 260 head entered; a record number for this event, which is another sign of the growth we are experiencing in the Shorthorn breed. The Fort Worth Stock Show National Shorthorn Show is becoming our 2nd largest national show. If this excitement and participation is any indication of what we can expect in Texas, the Junior National in Abilene

this summer should be a fantastic affair full of family fun and competition. Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event was voted as one of the Most Enjoyable Junior National of all breeds, by the Showtimes Magazine. The results of both Denver and Fort Worth Shows are in this issue of the Shorthorn Country starting on page 20 for Denver and page 44 for Forth Worth. These shows indicate the excitement and interest in the Shorthorn Breed for 2020 and beyond; our breed is getting positioned to take on a leadership role in the industry. The growth of new memberships and junior programs has been and continues to be strong. The demand for high quality animals with documentation attached will bring premiums in the future, compared to those that are not so good and lack the data. The one thing that impressed me in Denver was the number of high-quality bulls and females in the yards show. Numbers of thick, muscular bulls on a correct running gear; bulls that will make contributions to both the purebred and commercial industries. Cattle that the exhibitors can be proud of and cattle that every Shorthorn breeder should be proud of. When the show was over, the pens where full of people admiring and interested in bulls and many exhibitors selling their bulls or finding buyers for them at their upcoming sales. It was an impressive show and very, very competitive.

One challenge that our breed will always be faced with is ensuring the cattle we produce and sell are desirable or better yet, superior in quality and performance data. Must I always have to mention the importance of a highquality animal with documentation that is acceptable to the industry? A good one is a good one and the definition of a good one includes both quality phenotype and excellent documentation is needed. The two go hand in hand. Without the performance data, the animal does not achieve the sought after added value and if the looks and phenotype are missing, their appeal to buyers is lost. Both are essential to gain the industryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention, regardless of producing commercial type bulls or fancy show heifers. Real value commences when the animal goes into production. We admire the cattle at the shows, but they need to produce at home when they are no longer show age. It is the real-world animal that will survive and carry our breed into the next decade. The Shorthorn Breed is beginning to receive recognition in our industry. It is of ultimate importance that our product meets the challenges for the remainder of this decade and beyond. I think we are off to a good start in 2020; we have to keep the pedal to the floor, breeding and selecting to produce the best Shorthorn possible. That is our challenge for 2020 and beyond! =

Are You Listening? The title of the article is always my opportunity to grab your attention, hoping you’ll read my monthly column. In this instance, I’m not worried about if you are listening to me, but rather the customers that show up to your farms and ranches to buy cattle. There’s one media publication that is trying to get the bull customer to talk about what they want, and their report gives us a chance to listen. For the past six years, BEEF Magazine has put together a project titled The Seedstock 100. The project was printed in the January 2020 issue of BEEF Magazine. The Seedstock 100 sets out to identify those producers across the United States who merchandise the most bulls into the marketplace. This list of elite bull marketers ranges from selling 230 bulls in 2019 to almost 4,000 young sires, and can be found in 23 states coast to coast. Within the breeding programs of the Seedstock 100, there are 33 different breeds, composites, or hybrid breeds of cattle listed. Unfortunately, neither Shorthorn nor ShorthornPlus are included in those 33 bull breed types. As part of their publishing of the Seedstock 100 list, BEEF also included some findings from a producer survey in regards to genetic makeup, purchasing demands, and management practices in their operations. The summary article compiled by BEEF writer Wes Ishmael was pretty enlightening. I encourage you to go read the whole report, if you can. While treating the responses to any survey as pure gospel is always a cautionary tale, it is still interesting to look at the responses from commercial producers in hopes of identifying a potential trend. According to respondents to this survey, 72% of their cow herds were classified as mostly straightbred British or British crossbred females. From that subset of cattlemen, 97% of those straight and British crossbred cattle were classified as Angus (73%), Red Angus (15%) or Hereford (9%). When it comes

Jungels Shorthorn Farm was established in 1953 with the purchase of a registered Shorthorn heifer. She was added to a herd of commercial cows as a 4-H project for Derek’s uncle, LeRoy. From there, the herd grew to a base of 50 registered Shorthorn cows. Top bulls were purchased throughout the years from National Sales and the family was one of the first in the area to employ performance testing. In 1974, Dennis and Rita Jungels purchased the farm and cow herd of longtime North Dakota Shorthorn breeder, Melvin Dronen. The 50-head cowherd was maintained for the next 25 years with performance testing at the core of selection. Expansion began in 2000 when Dennis & Rita’s son, Derek graduated from college and began to seek the best real-world, industry-driven genetics available in the Shorthorn breed to enhance their existing core cow herd. In 2002, Derek purchased a farmstead south of Valley City, North Dakota. It began with a couple pole buildings and 2 pens which evolved into the ranch headquarters to house production sales animals, and display pens with a sale facility. Derek took a risk in 2007 that would later be beneficial to the operation. Derek took as many as 50 bulls to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, not only displaying them but auctioning them off after in an effort to reintroduce Shorthorns into the industry. This put JSF on the map with commercially focused Shorthorn genetics on a national stage. Today, the operation runs a state of the art 999-head capacity backgrounding feedlot along with barns for calving and staging new pairs, as well as working facilities. This, coupled with 1,050 acres of owned tillable, pasture, and irrigated land, all within a 3-mile radius of headquarters, is utilized for feed production and supports residual and winter grazing of 225 head of registered Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cows, plus the development of 100 purebred and composite Shorthorn heifers. In addition to the core Shorthorn herd, JSF also maintains groups of Registered Angus, Red Angus, and Simmental cows. These females are mated exclusively to JSF Shorthorn bulls for the development of unique composite cattle, marketed with the commercial producer at the forefront of their mind. In addition to the cow-calf operation,

JSF acquires heifer calves from their bull customers. These females are developed and then mated to Shorthorn or Red Angus bulls via artificial insemination. These bred heifers are marketed in groups, based on calving date, at their annual bull sale. At any one time, Jungels Shorthorn Farm supports 400 registered cows from 4 breeds, and up to 1,000 head of registered, commercial females, and backgrounded steers. The operation spans over 3,300 acres, on a combination of owned and rented land. JSF currently holds 2 sales annually, “Durham Nation” the first Saturday in November and “Durhams in the Dakotas” the first Tuesday in February. Due to International Genetic Solutions, Jungels Shorthorn Farm is able to evaluate their operation on many levels. Performance information from purebreds and composites all feeds into the same system and animals can be evaluated on the same EPD base. More importantly, his customer base can view his entire sale offering using one uniform set of genetic tools. He gathers performance data on bulls and females to provide a better understanding to his customers of his herd and what he has to offer. Derek served on the ASA Board and was an integral part of the “push” to develop and implement three $Value Indexes, the British Maternal Index ($BMI), the Feedlot Index ($F), and the Calving Ease Index ($CEZ). Since that time, JSF has participated in every performance driven program offered by the ASA including

the Great State Feedout, the annual Sire Evaluation, and numerous other research trials and genomic tests for hide color, horned-polled status, and genetic defect status. In addition to his successful cattle operation, Derek also serves his community. He is a member of the American Shorthorn Association and North Dakota Shorthorn Association. He is a 22-year member of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association and represents the Shorthorn breed on the Seedstock Council. He is a member of the North Star Classic Livestock Committee and has served as an officer of the Ransom County Fair Association. He organized and founded the Southeast North Dakota Junior Livestock Expo in 2001 that continues to grow. He was a founding board member and continues to serve in that capacity for the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation. From 2006-2011 Derek served as vicepresident and also as a member of the executive committee for the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. For the last 20 years, Derek has been a scholarship sponsor for North Dakota State University’s Little I show and had donated Shorthorn heifers for the event in excess of a decade. Congratulations to Derek Jungels of Jungels Shorthorn Farm for being selected as the show honoree for the 2020 National Western Stock Show. It is well deserved.=

Sixty-one head of Shorthorn and Shorthorn-influenced cattle were presented to judge Dean Jannsen (Peoria, IL) at the 2020 National Western Stock Show Pen Show. In one of the more competitive showings in recent years, 17 pens of bulls and heifers were exhibited by 12 different Shorthorn outfits from eight different states. Stepping Stone Ranch of Edson, Kan., exhibited the Champion Pen of 3 ShorthornPlus Heifers and Champion Pen of 3 ShorthornPlus Bulls. The May and June 2019 heifers weighed in at a 704 lb pen average with a WDA of 3.06, while the May-born bulls tipped the scales at 766 lb, with a 3.23 WDA. One of the heifers from the winning pen went on to be a division winner on The Hill in the Open ShorthornPlus show the following day. In the very competitive Shorthorn Pen of 3 Heifer show, Pearl Valley Shorthorns of Valley City, ND took home the Champion banner for the second year in a row. Their pen of March and April 2019 heifers averaged 781 lb with a 2.65 WDA. The pick of this pen was a feature in The Summit sale the following night. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 Shorthorn Heifers honor went to Horton Farms Shorthorns of Saint Charles, Ill. Weighing in at 765 lb with a 2.45 WDA, these March heifers were second in class to the champion and followed right behind them to claim Reserve Champion overall honors. In the Shorthorn Pen of 5 Bull show, Jungels Shorthorn Farm of Kathryn, ND took home the major award of Champion. The March and April group of red bulls weighed in at 941 lb with a WDA of 3.15. Reserve Champion Pen of 5 Shorthorn Bull honors went to Leveldale Farms of Mason City, Ill., with their winners of the junior bull calf class. These January and February bulls weighed at an average of 1,091 lb, for a WDA of 3.11. Jungels Shorthorn Farm also took top honors in the Shorthorn Pen of 3 Bull show with a set of February and March bulls. This pen averaged 1,142 lb for a WDA of 3.42. Reserve Champion Shorthorn Pen of 3 Bulls honor went to the champion pen of Yearling Bulls 20

from Kaehlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Homedale Farm, St. Charles, Minn. These August and September 2018 bulls weighed 1,571 lb on average and posted a WDA of 3.04. Congratulations to all our exhibitors

On the Road Again Even though it seems like I was living out of my suitcase as January and February took me to Denver, Fort Worth (twice) and San Antonio, it has been a great time to represent the Shorthorn breed. We had a great show in Denver with many breeders attending to exhibit their Shorthorn cattle at the National Western. It was exciting to see so many people who are passionate for the breed. After returning home from Denver, I headed to Fort Worth to speak at a Livestock Appreciation Luncheon. Each year, they invite a former junior exhibitor and scholarship winner to explain the benefits of stock shows to youth in the industry. As someone who has attended the Fort Worth Stock Show for 20 years – only missing one show in all those years – I was able to encourage scholarship contributors to continue donating to support youth. I discussed my experience showing at Fort Worth, thanked them for the scholarship, and told them about my

current job as a youth activity director for the ASA. It was exciting to be able to share my passion for working with youth in the Shorthorn breed and how important they are in the agricultural industry. Just a few days later, Emily and I headed back down to Fort Worth for the final National Shorthorn Show of 20192020. Numbers were up and we had a wonderful show to finish out the season. Once we finished up in Fort Worth, we headed south. Cattlemen from all over the world gathered in San Antonio, Texas, February 5-7 for educational sessions, networking and more. The National Cattleman’s Beef Association Convention and Trade Show is an exciting event for the American Shorthorn Association to be represented in front of more than 9,000 attendees. The Shorthorn booth attracted attention from many current breeders and potential members during the three-

day trade show. Emily and I handed out printed promotional materials while discussing the advantages and growing popularity of the Shorthorn breed with attendees. The 2021 NCBA Convention and Trade Show will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, on February 3-5. We hope to see you there! It is nice to be home and back in the office after so many days on the road. fort Worth STOCK SHOW FWSS Show Honoree M J Shorthorns Mary & J.O. Bass

Registered Shorthorns came to the Rufus Hinton Farm, south of Mansfield, Texas in 1961. Mary Hinton began showing through Tarrant County 4-H in 1963 with a bred heifer from T.P Coburn, Blum, Texas. This was her first entry in the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. She was a charter member of the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association and served as one of the first four princesses in 1968 when the Texas Shorthorn Lassies began the Lassie Princess program. She served as the Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen for the 1969-1970 year. IN 1974 she was named the junior breeder of the year by the American Junior Shorthorn Association. Following graduation from Tarleton State University, she worked for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. In 1977 she married J.O. Bass III from Plainview, Texas and her small her of Shorthorn cows was moved to the Texas Panhandle South Plains and M J Shorthorns was formed. The first calf registered for M J Shorthorns was born September 1, 1977. In 1978 Mary Bass became the first woman elected as a director of the Texas Shorthorn Association. She was elected secretary/treasurer of the state association in 1981 and served until 1995. Since 1998 she has served as publicity officer. Through the years, Mary remained active in the Shorthorn auxiliary, serving the state and national group. From 19811986 she served on the board of directors of the National Shorthorn Lassies, ladies auxiliary, including two years as national president. She was honored with the national Lassie of the Year award in 1986. J.O. served as a steer classifier for the Texas Shorthorn Association in the 1980’s; a state director from 1984-1987; and as state president from 1987 to 1989. He also served one term as a director of the American Polled Shorthorn Society. M J Shorthorns has been elected a voting delegate to attend the annual meeting of the American Shorthorn Association many times. The couple managed the Cowtown Classic Shorthorn Sale at the Fort Worth Stock Show and the Texas Shorthorn Association state sale in the 1980’s. The Texas Shorthorn Association named them the “Progressive Breeder” of the year in 1986. In 1992 M J Shorthorns was selected a “Builder of the Breed” by the American Shorthorn Association and in 2012 they were honored with the “Pioneer Breeder” of the year award by the Texas Shorthorn

Association. Cattle have to perform in the semi-arid west Texas plains, so a moderate size cow works best. Calving records have been kept on the cows since 1977. The Basses continually strive to improve the herd and keep up the trends in the Shorthorn industry. A son of Columbus, a Milking Shorthorn, was purchased in 1978 to use on the beef type cows. In 1980, an Irish influenced bull calf was purchased from Alden Farms. Several home bred bulls have been used through the years, including MJS Mr. Benson, who was Reserve Senior Champion Bull at Fort Worth in 1991. M J Shorthorns has always promoted their breeding program through the show ring. In 1978 they began exhibiting cattle in the Tri-State Fair, Amarillo and in 1979 they showed their first cattle at the Fort Worth Stock Show. MJS Cattle have also been exhibited at the Panhandle South Plains Fair in Lubbock, the Houston Livestock Show, Louisville and Denver. In addition to private treaty stales, cattle have been sold through the 5-state Shorthorn sale, the Cowtown Classic, the Texas Shorthorn Association Spring Sales and the Oklahoma Sooner Sale. Son, James, exhibited his first heifer in 1993 at the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association Preview Show and continued

showing heifers and steers through 4-H and FFA. He served as a director of the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association as well as a local 4-H and FFA officer. He still maintains his small herd of Shorthorns and helps with showing cattle when his job permits. In the last 12 years artificial insemination has played a major role in advancing genetics in the herd. Particular attention has been placed on structural correctness, sound feet and calving ease. A.I. sires must be polled and clean of the three major genetic defects. The current herd numbers 20 cows. J.O. retired at the end of November 2019 from Olton Welding and Machine after 21 years as parts manager. He is active in Masonic Lodge and serves as Lay Leader at church. Mary is a 4-H leader, secretary of the Olton Junior Livestock Association, heifer superintendent for Panhandle Parade of Breeds junior livestock show and assists with the junior heifer show at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo. The couple attend First United Methodist Church in Olton, Texas. They have 3 grandchildren, Makayla and Weston McCarver and Brittyn Bass. = Junior Corner New Year New Challenge As we have returned home with our bellies full of crepes, a bag of free stuff from the yards, and the all great memories we made attending the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, it is a great time to reflect. We have had many amazing moments and times, not only in Denver but within this industry. It was a great few days in Denver spent with family and friends watching Shorthorns on the hill and in the yards. All these events are possible because of all the incredible support we have throughout the year. On behalf of the Shorthorn board, I would like to say thank you to all the people that donated or purchased at our Funding the Future fundraiser, all the proceeds will go towards NJSS and AJSA. We truly appreciate your support and know things could not be possible without your generosity. Now since the days are getting longer it means that in less than five short months we will be back together. We will all be sitting under a fan in the

warm Texas sun, hanging out in Abilene, Texas. I am extremely excited for what the junior board has planned for this years junior national. We have made some changes as we are always striving to improve the event, so make sure to look ahead and stay up to date on information. Also, I want to challenge all the junior members while attending this year’s junior nationals. I would like to see each junior to go outside their comfort zone in Abilene, Texas. For example, do a contest you have never done before, try to meet someone new every day, try to meet all the junior board members, or do something that makes you step outside of your comfort zone. To prove to you that you can do this and will survive, last year I went outside my comfort zone and ran for the National Board. I was so scared because I was always the shy, quiet kid but, I wanted to go outside of my box, meet new people, and be involved with a great association. I have learned that if we stay in our boxes, don’t try anything new, we aren’t challenging

ourselves, and trying to become the best person we can be. So, I challenge all the junior members at Junior Nationals in Abilene to challenge themselves, and do something new. See you soon Shorthorn family. =

In intermediate showmanship, the judges will place the top 10. They will not fit the animals, just be placed 1st-10th. Awards for team fitting and showmanship will be given at time of placing instead of the awards ceremony. The schedule has been changed. Cattle and contest check-in will be on Monday, June 22. National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference

= Tartan Plaid Meet the National Lassie Board I would like to take the time to introduce to you the National Lassie Board for this upcoming year. Feel free to reach out to any of us with questions you might have for the National Lassies. President - Sommer Smith has served several terms on the National Lassie Board since 2001 and is a former queen mom. She and Troy own M Bar Shorthorns in Walton, Kansas. Outside of the cattle industry Sommer is the CFO of Moundridge Communications Network a rural telephone and internet provider. In her spare-time she follows their son Clayton’s sport seasons (football, wrestling and golf ) and daughter Faye’s activities. Vice President - Megan Dragstrem is a past lassie queen from Amboy, Indiana; as well as a past junior board member. She currently works for the National Swine Registry as a recent graduate from Western Kentucky University. You will find Megan behind the camera at many of our shorthorn events. Little known fact, she traveled to 14 states during her year as a lassie queen. Secretary - Sydney Miller is from Charlotte, MI, a former lassie queen. She currently works for Michigan State

University Extension as a Community Nutrition Instructor. Recently, she moved back to the family farm, Narrow Brook Shorthorns which allows her be part of the operation again. Outside of work she enjoys volunteering with her local FFA chapter and 4-H club and spoiling her pup! Treasurer/Membership - Pam Dressen is from Ellsworth, Wisconsin and a former queen mom and was a MN state queen. Her daughter Brianna and son Caleb help manage the family’s Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus operation. Their family has been in the shorthorn industry for over 100 years. Pam is a kindergarten teacher that utilizes ag in the classroom as much as she can. She not only teaches, but she is the secretary treasurer of the MN Shorthorn Association. In her free time she enjoys reading and baking. Queen ChairmenElaine Dragstrem is a 3rd generation Shorthorn breeder. She has 2 daughters Megan and Allison, that both served as junior board members. Megan is currently a lassie board member and served as an alternate queen. Bob and Elaine not only raise Shorthorn cattle

in Indiana, but also farm corn and soybeans. Elaine has been a pre-school teacher for 18 years. Gwen Crawford is a former junior activities director for the ASA. She currently lives in North Dakota. Gwen served on the junior board and has been active with the association her entire life. Gwen is the economic development director and auditor for the city of Lisbon, ND. Public Relations - Faye Smith is a former alternate lassie queen from Walton, Kansas. She is a student at Kansas State University majoring in Ag Communications. Faye is currently working for the college of ag in the associate dean’s office as well as a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She is active in the AJSA and is looking forward to Jr. Nationals this summer. Director - Faye Korthaus is also a former lassie queen from Kentucky as well as a queen mom. She and her family have been involved in the Shorthorn breed for many years. Faye served on the AJSA board when she was in the junior association. We welcome Faye back to the board again after many terms. =

= News & Notes Farewell CHARLESTON, IL – Heaven gained a farmer on January 14, 2020 as Robert J. (Bob) Wilson departed this earthly home for his eternal reward while surrounded by loving family and friends. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. The Funeral Service, honoring and celebrating his life, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020 at the funeral chapel with long time family friend, Reverend Kenin Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Memorial gifts in his honor may be made to the Charleston High School FFA Activity Fund Account; the University of Illinois 4-H Foundation (Coles County) or CrossTies Christian Ministries. Gifts may be left at the visitation/ service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Bob was born on November 8, 1929, the youngest child of Arthur and Clara (Esch) Wilson. He grew up on the family farm in Hutton Township, and graduated Charleston High School in 1950. During his schooling he was invited to the Sadie Hawkins Dance by who was to become the love of his life. He married Joyce J. Scribner on May 29, 1951, with whom he has celebrated 68 years of love and friendship. From that union came two sons, Gary L. Wilson of Terre Haute, Indiana and Dr. Larry W. Wilson of Evanston, Illinois. Bob was a farmer at heart throughout his life. For the first 14 years of marriage he worked for and managed the Kroger store in Charleston. At its closing, he was employed by the A&P Store on the south side of the Charleston Square. In the fall of 1965 he accepted a position at Eastern Illinois University, working in the athletics equipment room; a job he would enjoy for the next 26 years. In 1968, Bob and his family moved to a small farm in Westfield, Illinois where they lived for 36 years. During their

time on the farm, the Wilson’s two sons, showed Corriedale Sheep. Together, Bob and Joyce founded Robjoy Shorthorns, raising, exhibiting, and selling Registered Shorthorn Cattle. You could find Bob and Joyce along the bleachers at the Illinois State Fair, DuQuoin State Fair, and the North American International Livestock Exposition. Robjoy Shorthorn were honored by the American Shorthorn Association in 2010 as Builder of Breed. Bob was also noted for his half acre garden, his green thumbs, and producing vegetables for his family, friends, and neighbors. Not to be left unnoticed, were his beautiful flowers and plants. You would also find Bob’s faithful companions, Captain, Sebastian and Sydney, the family pets by his side. Bob was an avid sports fan of the Eastern Illinois Panthers and the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. He also enjoyed gospel and traditional country music, originating from playing the mandolin and violin with his sister and extended family in his early years. Bob was member of First Baptist Church in Charleston and of both the American and Illinois Shorthorn Associations. Above and beyond all of that, the greatest joy in his life was watching his sons grow into outstanding young men; as well as his grandchildren, Darrick (Christy) Wilson of Terre Haute, Indiana and Kelsey (Jarrod) Barrett of Farmersburg, Indiana. Those who kept him young at heart were his three great-grandchildren, Maci Grace Wilson, Brookelee Kay Barrett and Gradon Barrett. He was preceded by his parents, brothers, William, Albert and Charles Wilson; a sister Florence Goble, and infant sister, Mildred Alice Wilson. Bob’s family wishes to extend sincere thanks and heartfelt appreciation to Bob’s caregivers; Carolyn Birch, Barbara Catron, Julie McDivitt , Fred Jaeger, Jeanie Davis and Judith Stapp. The same is extended to the doctors, nurses and staff at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and Lincolnland Hospice for their compassion and caring during Bob’s final days. =

Livestock Marketeers 2020 Hall of Fame Induction DENVER — The Livestock Marketeers — An informal fraternity of livestock fieldmen, auctioneers, sale managers and related livestock business leaders met for their 55th Annual Banquet at the National Western Club on January 18th. The 2020 inductees into the Hall of Fame were Hoover Case, Marshfield, Mo, Alan Sears, Eaton, Co and Jerry Gliko (Posthumous), Belt, Mt. Hoover Case - Hoover Case, of Marshfield, MO, has dedicated most of his life to auctioneering purebred cattle and helping youth in agriculture. In 1966, 16-year-old Hoover Case stepped into the sale ring with his Charolais heifer at the American Royal Charolais Sale. Case remembers, “George Morse was the auctioneer on the block. I listened to him and decided that was what I wanted to do.” For the last 36 years Hoover has been heavily involved with Santa Gertrudis, Beefmaster-Brangus, Simbrah and other “Eared” breeds, auctioneering purebred sales from Texas to Florida. Highlights of his career include selling the King Ranch 150th Anniversary sale in 2003, as well as continuing to this day selling Registered Livestock around the country after a devastating onset of bacterial meningitis left him paralyzed in 1993.
