Shorthorns Persevere!
I
t has been busy since the first of the year. 2021 kicked off with the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress National Shorthorn Show in Oklahoma City. This show was originally conceived as a replacement for the National Western in Denver and ended up being a replacement for Fort Worth as well. It was a huge success with numbers that equaled or surpassed the North American in Louisville. I would first like to congratulate the staff and sponsors of this event. It was planned and pulled off in a short period of time; around three months. For a show of this magnitude, it went fabulous. Currently, there is talk of continuing this event and those decisions will be made public in the very near future. In all honesty, it looks like there may be a Cattlemen’s Congress in OKC next year. There have been many positive comments and results for this national event. The sales, for most all breeds, were better than they have ever been, including the Summit National Shorthorn Sale. The cost for exhibitors to attend was less and the same would be true for spectators. The ease of parking and attending made this a very enjoyable event for those who attended. All the positive attendance and activity happened in spite of being in middle of a surge of positive Covid-19 tests. There were regulations concerning this at the show and it was not promoted for large outside attendance of spectators due to the positive surge. It will be very interesting to see how this event could grow if it can be held under normal conditions. The determination of this show’s future should be made public in the next 2 to 3 months. I also want to thank you, the ASA members, for your patience and understanding during January. Right after the holiday break the office staff including Heather, Shelby and myself all 8

tested positive for Covid-19. As a result, it was necessary to close the office for the first part of January. We were lucky to find and have the help we needed for the Cattlemen’s Congress. We have made it through Covid-19 in the office and we are back to normal trying to take care of business for you. Soon, you will be seeing some new faces in the office. We are sad to see Emily Velisek leave March 1st and soon Matt Woolfolk will continue his role as Director of Performance Activities by working out of the office on a part-time basis. Two new staff members will come on-board in February. They are Cassie Reid and Wade Minihan. You can read about them on page 24. The first week in February your Board of Directors met at the office in Kansas City. We were forced to cancel the inperson Annual Meeting due to gathering restrictions in Kansas City because of the Pandemic. In response, we hosted a virtual Annual Meeting which went very well; the Board attended from the ASA Board Room via Zoom and the membership was able to log in from their home computer or device. During the meeting I presented a State of the Association report covering the past year. Joe Bales, Dave Greenhorn and Mark Gordon were each elected for three-year terms during the virtual meeting. Hugh Mooney will serve as your ASA Board of Director President and Joe Bales as the new Vice President. Nancy Grathwohl Heter was recognized as the retiring Board Member and retiring President of the ASA. Hopefully, we will be back to some sort of normalcy soon and put this Pandemic behind us. It has driven a lot of situations and changes over the past year for everyone. On the bright side of things, we have seen a steady growth in activity since our new fiscal year started on Sept. 1, 2020.
A look back at the fall sale season and a review of the demand for Shorthorns indicates a pretty strong year to me thus far. This has carried on into the 2021 year with sales still proving the value and demand for more Shorthorn cattle. I have heard many positive comments about the quality and depth of the numbers at the Cattlemen’s Congress. This includes one the toughest pen shows in Shorthorn history. The Shorthorn Breed was exposed to other breeds in this atmosphere and everyone took notice according to comments about the quality of our breed. Sales have been strong, and the interest has been good for the winter and spring sales. I had a meeting with executives from other breeds and they are taking notice as well; they mentioned the very successful bull sale that week in North Dakota. When we can get positive comments from other breeds it says a lot for our breed and the success and hard work of our membership! =
Thank you Nancy, for your dedication and service to the ASA Board of Directors.

Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs
Tracking Movements Building off of last month’s article, I was curious to see how much Shorthorn cattle have pushed forward on genetics for traits like growth and carcass. After all, it’s not really fair to discuss if some cattle are pushing that envelope too far without knowing where your own breed stands. As I wondered about the best way to convey this message, a colleague at another breed association displayed line graphs for the trend of movement on various EPDs within their association. While you can find this information in table form in Digital Beef (“Genetic Trends” under the Cattle Evaluation heading on the left side), the visual assistance of a line graph helps drive the point home more effectively than just numbers on paper. The graphs below will show the average EPD value for the Shorthorn population for each year from 2001 up to 2020. For traits not displayed in this article, you can find the trend in the chart displayed in Digital Beef. With all the changes that have happened in our EPD calculations over the last two decades, we obviously can’t compare the number that would have been published in 2001, 2010, or even 2019 to today’s numbers. That is why the values used to create these graphs are calculated using the current EPD model that we are using right now on animals from the past. It basically goes back in time and runs an evaluation for those past years to show us how the cattle have changed in the last two decades. Calving Ease Looking at this graph, I see that when Shorthorn breeders are confronted to make changes to fix an issue in the cattle, they can certainly make it happen. Around 2009, the Birth Weight (BW) EPD starts to drop and the Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD starts to rise. Those are signs that the calving ease ability of Shorthorn cattle has improved over the last decade, and breeders are to be 12
shorthorn country = march 2021
commended for that. Growth With a decrease in BW, one might expect Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW) to follow suit. The Shorthorn breed has made some steady progress in increasing growth over the same time frame that the calving ease was changed. The Shorthorn breed’s WW EPD increased 10% since 2010, and the YW EPD increased 9%. While that is progress, our competition is moving their growth trend faster. The same breed that I borrowed this idea from (another British breed) has seen increases of 23 and 20 percent for WW and YW EPD, respectively. If we had moved at that same rate, our averages today would be at 50 for WW and 77 for YW. As it stands, we are five pounds below that for WW (average for nonparents is 45) and eight pounds for YW (current average is 69). Carcass For Ribeye Area (REA) EPD and Marbling EPD (MB), the breed has been pretty stagnant over the last two decades. According to CattleFax, the beef industry saw the percentage of Choice and Prime carcasses go from 67% in 2013 to 83% in 2020. Our MB has barely moved the needle in that time period. The industry’s increase in ribeye size has led to some unforeseen drawbacks at the retail and consumer level. Steaks get cut thinner to keep weights of cuts in line, or portion size is larger than most want on the plate. Maybe the fact that we haven’t moved the REA number isn’t a huge cause for concern. Whether we think Shorthorn cattle have enough marbling in them to be successful in the marketplace or not, the genetic statistics say we have not really changed where the breed is for that trait in the last 20 years. You as breeders proved with CED and BW that you can move a trait when you put your focus on it. I’ll let you decide if marbling is the
next one to get your attention. Indexes Particularly in the last decade, Shorthorns are making progress in their index values, particularly $CEZ and $BMI. The average $BMI has increased almost 9% since 2010, with $CEZ and $F trending up 30% and 4%, respectively. Looking at the previous graphs would give you an indication that $CEZ should have moved more than the other indexes, and that prediction holds true. The CED EPD plays a large role in $CEZ (thus the greater movement) and a low to moderate role in $BMI. With $F driven mostly by growth and carcass traits, the slower rate of change is also in line with what you might expect if you studied the previous graphs. This exercise should demonstrate the direction the Shorthorn population as a whole has moved over the past two decades. On an individual herd basis, I know there are breeders out there who have moved the genetics in their herds at a faster pace than the population average. As those leading breeders, I challenge you to pick up, encourage, and coach other breeders around you that might need a hand in making the right decisions to move their herd towards the goal of more profitable, commercially acceptable Shorthorn cattle. If you are curious about the trend of your own herd for any trait measured by an EPD, you can find that specific information in Digital Beef. On the left-hand menu, there is a “Tools” option. From there, selecting “Genetic Trends” allows you to see graphs similar to the ones published here for each trait and compare how your cattle are trending in comparison to the Shorthorn population. = See Trait Trend Graphs on Next Page

Sire Test Update
Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs
2019 ASA National Sire Test Performance Review The National Sire Test (NST) program has been a valuable tool for testing the ability of Shorthorn genetics to perform in a real-world setting. The third and final year of the NST and our partnership with the University of Illinois provided us with more data on a genetically diverse bunch of Shorthorn sires. Once again, we were able to collect a full set of data on Shorthorn-influenced cattle from birth to rail. The NST provides breeders the opportunity to test the genetics in their breeding program in a real-world setting while gaining more progeny data on their sires. From a big picture standpoint, the NST gives ASA more information on the breed to show to the industry that our cattle have the capability to be used as a profitable piece of their breeding program.

As was the theme with just about every walk of life in 2020, the National Sire Test experienced some unexpected hiccups and changes to plans. With the Tyson plant in Joslin, IL having capacity cut due to Covid-19 restrictions, the cattle had to stay on feed longer than anticipated before they were able to be harvested. Like previous installments of this program, the ten enrolled sires were bred to 200 U of I cows at their Dixon Spring research farm in December 2018 for these fall-born 2019 calves. After weaning, the calves were moved to the beef farm on campus for the feeding trial and finishing phase. The cattle were on feed for a slightly longer time period than in the past. You will see this longer feeding period reflected in higher amounts of backfat and carcass
weights on these animals. Below are data compilations of all the sires from the 2019 calf crop. Data is broken down into steers and heifers by sire. I want to thank all the breeders that participated in this program over the past three years. It has been very rewarding to see Shorthorn-sired cattle perform to industry standards and validate that this breed deserves a chance to play a role in the commercial cattle industry in the United States. Without the help and cooperation of Dr. Dan Shike at the University of Illinois, we wouldn’t have been able to make this project happen. Special thanks to him and his team for all their work, data collection, and being a gracious host and partner over the years of the NST. =

ASA Staff Changes March brings spring and a time for new beginnings, including some changes at the American Shorthorn Association! Emily Velisek, the ASA Director of Events, Show and Membership activities left her job at the ASA at the end of February. Emily joined the ASA staff in July of 2017 and we watched her grow in her position during her time here. We enjoyed working with her and wish her all the best for her future in Iowa! She will be missed, but we know we will see her down the road. Matt Woolfolk, the ASA Director of Performance Programs, Performance Data and Commercial Acceptance recently got engaged and will be leaving us in April. He will still continue to do work in his current position. We look forward to our continued work with Matt, even if it isn’t full-time. We are so excited for him and his future with his soon-to-be bride. Congratulations Matt! Cassie Reid will be joining us as Customer Service Specialist and Co-Director of Shows, Event and Membership Services. In this position she will provide customer support and assist with press releases and eblasts. She will also coordinate shows, events and communicate with membership. Reid comes to the American Shorthorn Association from the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds & Event Center (OEF) in Springfield, Mo., where she served most recently as the Livestock Director. During her 6-year tenure at OEF, she was active with the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE), graduating from the Institute of Fair Management in December of 2018. Most recently, Reid served on the IAFE’s Young Professionals 24

Initiative Steering Committee. Reid began her career in 2014 as the Assistant Ag Director at OEF. She is a 2015 alumna of Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Communications. Reid originally hails from Bosworth, Mo. on her family’s diversified row crop and cattle farm. As a 4-H & FFA member, Reid primarily exhibited Shorthorn & Charolais cattle & Boer Goats throughout her youth. “I look forward to engaging with the members of the American Shorthorn Association and seeing success throughout all aspects of the breed,” Reid said. “My experience in the fair industry provides the confidence needed to see association goals flourish, from start to finish.” Wade Minihan will be joining us as Customer Service Specialist and Co-Director of Shows, Event and Membership Services. In this position he will provide customer support, assist with DNA and weights and measurements management for performance data. He will also coordinate shows, events and communicate with membership. Minihan grew up in Blaine, Kansas on a Commercial Cow/Calf and Registered Hereford cattle operation. While growing up, his family showed cattle at the state and national level. He was an active member of the American Junior Hereford Association, as well as, the Kansas Junior Hereford Association where he served on the junior board. Minihan graduated from Fort Hays State University, with a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness, with a minor in marketing. While at FHSU, he was involved in many clubs/organizations on campus. Minihan was an intern
in 2019 at the American Shorthorn Association. “I think my internship gave me good knowledge and helped prepare me for this position,” Minihan said. “My internship gave me knowledge of the Shorthorn breed and many connections with people involved in the association. I am excited for this new opportunity and look forward to working with the breeders.” The ASA is excited to welcome two new members to our team. We may go through a small transition period at the ASA during training of our new staff members, but we still will be committed and available to assist our membership! After the two new staff members are trained, you can call in and receive assistance from anyone in the office. All staff will be trained to assist you in the registry. =

Shorthorn Pen Shows Strong at Cattlemen’s Congress Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus Pens :: Judge: Scott Werning, Emery, S.D. by Matt Woolfolk
Forty-eight head of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cattle were exhibited in fourteen pens during the National Shorthorn Pen Show at the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. Judge Scott Werning of Werning Cattle Company in South Dakota praised breeders for bringing pens with uniformity, excellent phenotypic quality, and strong genetic documentation. In the ShorthornPlus show, Stepping Stone Ranch of Edson, KS exhibited the Champion Pen of 3 heifers. This pen of July-born red heifers, all sired by SSRB MR Man 104 2017, averaged 522 lb and a WDA of 2.99. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 heifers went to Lakeside Farms of Hersey, MI. This pen of April and May calves averaged 600 lb and a WDA of 2.41 Jungels Shorthorn Farm of Kathryn, ND took home Champion Pen of 3 honors in the ShorthornPlus bull show. These black-hided spring bull calves weighed in at a 935 lb average with a WDA of 3.02. In the Shorthorn Pen of 3 heifer show, Pearl Valley Shorthorns (Valley City, ND) exhibited the champion pen for the third year in a row. The Vachal family brought a trio of white heifers to OKC. These late March heifers averaged 765 lb with a WDA of 2.66. The pick of this pen of heifers sold in The Summit sale the following evening and was a hotly contested lot with plenty of bidding interest. In the Shorthorn bull show, Paint Valley Farms of Millersburg, OH exhibited the Champion Pen of 5 with their junior bull calf entry. The bulls averaged 1040 pounds and a WDA of 3.24. Reserve Champion honors went to Jungels Shorthorn Farm with the winning pen from the spring bull calf class. These March bulls weighed in at 971 lb with a WDA of 3.18. The final show of the morning was the Shorthorn Pen of 3 bull division. Jungels Shorthorn Farm took home champion honors with a trio of spring bull calves. All three bulls crossed the scales at 1000 lb each and a WDA of 3.38. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 went to Gilman Shorthorns of Stuart, Iowa. The winners of the junior bull calf class, 26

these bulls averaged 1138 lb with a WDA of 3.23. Thank you to all the breeders who made the trip to Oklahoma City to exhibit their pen cattle at the Cattlemen’s Congress. It was an outstanding exhibition with a good crowd ringside analyzing the cattle. If
a breeder couldn’t find a herd sire that could fit the needs of their breeding program while in OKC, I’m not sure that bull can be found anywhere! Data and results for all the pen cattle are on the following pages. We look forward to another exciting National Pen Show in 2022! =

Resilience [noun]: The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. According to the Oxford Dictionary, this is the definition that comes up first when you look up the word resilience. Well if 2020 doesn’t show that the cattle industry has resiliency, then I don’t know what does. WOW, what a year it has been, from shutting down last March to where we are now, a year later. Who could have ever imagined the challenges we would face? However, they have simply been just that. Challenges that our industry has taken head on and never backed down from. That is why the word resilience sticks out to me. For those of us that had the opportunity to attend the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City in January, I think we can all agree that is proof alone to how tough and dedicated the leaders of this industry are. After the National Western Stock Show was cancelled, industry leaders from Oklahoma saw an opportunity to provide an event for the cattle industry and give back. The number of government leaders alongside educational and industry leaders that made the show a success, is amazing to me. I have to say, I’ve learned many things from this challenging year about myself
and the agricultural industry. I’ve learned we are a strong group of people, who will persevere through good times and bad, in order to feed a nation and improve the lives of others. History doesn’t just remember the bad things that happen in a crisis, history also remembers those who rise above the crisis to improve things. I think there will be many people this year that will be remembered for their leadership in agriculture during these trying times. I am proud to be a part of history where we just kept moving forward! From an amazing Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Texas to the culmination of the show year in Oklahoma at the Cattleman’s Congress, records were broken for numbers exhibited, quality was highlighted, and records were broken for livestock and genetics sold. Thank you to all of the Association and industry leaders, sponsors, and volunteers, who were resilient and made these events happen. You go down in my history book as some of the greatest people I’ve met, and I hope to be able to give back to the industry and people who have given me so much. I can’t wait to see you all at the 2021 Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Louisville, KY. Until then, take care and show off how resilient you are! =

Christina National Shorthorn Wenderski Lassie Board Director
Opportunity Awaits Exciting times are ahead as the National Lassie Association has voted to move the National Queen contest to the 2021 National Junior Show in Louisville. With the move, the deadline for applications will be May 1st. I know there are some ladies out there who have been dreaming of running for National Queen for as long as they can remember, but there are also some that may be thinking why run? For those of you who are the latter, let me tell you why. As a former National Lassie, I can tell you that the opportunities are huge! For me, I wanted the opportunity to meet more breeders across this great country as well as sharing my love for the breed with those who may not know anything about the livestock industry, let alone Shorthorns. I was able to grow and develop skills that I have utilized well into my adulthood, especially public speaking and interviewing. Besides these opportunities, the National Lassie receives $3000 in travel funds and $1000 in scholarship and the Alternate National Lassie gets $3000 in travel funds and $500 in scholarship. In order to be considered for candidacy, ladies must be at least 16 years old and current members of the National Lassie Association and submit the application. Applications can be found on the Lassie page of www.shorthorn. org or by contacting a member of the
board. Remember, this is your initial opportunity to “Wow the judges” so do not be afraid to promote yourself! Completed application should be typed and consist of a cover letter expressing your intent to run and two letters of reference. Judges will be looking for educational information, description of your involvement within the Shorthorn breed and your personal goals for the future within the livestock industry, activities, achievements, and/ or honors that you believe to be relevant to your candidacy, and also your state queen experience/activities. There are also three pages allowed for photos and clippings that highlight your time as state queen and you as an individual. After you’ve promoted you to the best of your abilities, simply submit to Elaine Dragstrem and prepare for contest time! While at Jr. Nationals, you will be encouraged to compete in individual contests that are held, but this is not a requirement. During the week, candidates will participate in panel interviews, sharing a photo book highlighting you and your experiences, and most importantly interacting with fellow breeders. The National Board is looking for someone who will be active and involved. Although it may seem like a long and tedious process, please remember that this ultimately leads to amazing
opportunities! As a former National Queen, I can tell you that my time in the kilt was some of the best time of my life. I was one of those who had dreamed of wearing the plaid for as long as I could remember and I eagerly applied to be a state princess when I was old enough. From princess to state queen, I eagerly awaited the opportunity to share the heritage of our great breed. I never anticipated the amount of life lessons that would occur, the skills obtained, and most importantly, the lifelong friendships and connections. It does not matter if you have been thinking of being a Lassie for as long as you can remember or just in the last few years. By being a Lassie, you represent long tradition and history of the Shorthorn breed. Being a Lassie is more than just walking in classes at shows. It is about sharing and promoting Shorthorns across this great country. If you are even the tiniest bit curious, I encourage you to reach out to myself, any member of the board, or previous queens to learn their views and ideas. Although the process may sound tedious, please do not let this turn you away. One thing is for sure, Lassies are here to support Lassies. Most importantly, do not be afraid to dream big! If you love Shorthorns, we want you to share your love further. =

Roy Lee Johnson, age 91, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, January 23, 2021 at the Laurels Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He had been living at his home outside of Fredericktown until December 13, 2020. He was born in Flushing, Ohio on October 4, 1929, the son of Roy T. and Naomi (Croskey) Johnson. Lee grew up in Flushing on the family farm called Mill Brook as a 3rd generation Shorthorn cattle breeder. He and his wife, Frances K. Johnson, their six children and Lee’s parents moved from Flushing to their Fredericktown farm location in 1967. Known as Lee or R. Lee, he was involved in farming and raising and selling Shorthorn cattle from Mill Brook Farm his entire life. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Lee and his family showed cattle at many state fairs and National Shows in Chicago, Kansas City, Baltimore, Harrisburg, Houston, Ft. Worth, Louisville, and Denver and
even as far away as San Francisco. They exhibited several National Champion bulls and females and were recognized as one of the top Shorthorn breeders in the country over those two decades. They also held cattle sales at their farm in Fredericktown during that time drawing breeders from across the country and promoting the breed. Lee had been actively involved with the Shorthorn Association, acknowledged as a “builder of the breed” and having served as President of the Ohio chapter, and a long standing member at the national level. Besides cattle, he also liked draft horses and attending horse pulls in his later years. Lee was an extremely hard worker and instilled a high-level work ethic in his children. He was very proud of his six children and the extended family that followed. He also loved the land and liked improving his farm and working with other farmers to help make improvements on their land with his equipment. Between work he loved dancing and music and playing volleyball and basketball with his family at their farm. Lee was a big sports fan and especially enjoyed rooting for the
Ohio State Buckeyes and professional teams from the state of Ohio as well as the Boston Celtics. Lee is preceded in death by his wife Frances, his parents, and his brother and sister. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Greg Fisher, their 3 children and 7 grandchildren, his son Ron, his 3 children and 3 grandchildren, his daughter and son-in-law Chris and Tom McGuire and their 3 children and 4 grandchildren, daughters Cindy Johnson and Francine Johnson, and son and daughter-in-law Rob and Lisa Johnson and their 2 children. A memorial service will be scheduled by the family at a later date in the year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lee’s memory to the Shorthorn Foundation. The foundation provides youth scholarships, educational programs, and research to improve performance of the Shorthorn breed. Donations can be sent to Shorthorn Foundation, 1800 Lovers Leap, VanAlstyne, TX 75495 (Tax ID: 366221032). =
