Attention Juniors! • Junior members turning 22 in 2019, your Junior membership is good through Dec. 31, 2019. To receive the adult membership for 2020 at a transitional rate, you must complete the application on the back of the expiring junior member letter mailed out in November 2019 and return it along with payment to the ASA office by March 1, 2020. All memberships converted from junior to adult will become WHR breeders. • Junior members 7 years of age are eligible to show at the Junior National. The Junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child turned 7 on December 31, 2018 they are eligible to show at the 2019 National Junior Show in Lebanon, TN. WHR Breeders WHR Assessments for 2019 were sent in November. If you have not received yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2019 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2019.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2019 to an assessed 2019 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months) 2019 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE: March 1 - December 31, 2019 $25 *Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees as described below

New WHR Non-Assessed Cow Ruling - Effective Jan. 1, 2019 WHR Breeders: as of January 1, 2019, penalties will be added to WHR breeder registrations for calves born to dams not assessed in the year the calf was born. To avoid penalties, assessment of all dams in the herd must be completed by December 31 of that year. Registration fees of calves born to unassessed dams from previously closed assessment years: • under 12 months of age - $75 • 12-24 months - $95 • over 24 months - $135 *This applies only to animals registered to a dam which was not assessed in the year the calf was born.

= Association Outlook “The Importance of a Unified Breed”

would like to address some questions that members have been asking ASA board members. I hope the comments and information provided in this Association Outlook will resolve some of these inquiries. There appears to be concerns from some breeders or membership regarding how much funding is being spent on commercial advertising vs. show promotion. This is easy to answer; the numbers don’t lie. I am going to be a little like the infomercials we see on TV and tease you by addressing some issues before getting to your answer. First, I hope that as a Shorthorn breeder or member you agree that the most important part of any promotional campaign is that Shorthorn cattle are being publicized which of course, helps the breed. When the breed is exposed, all Shorthorn breeder’s benefit. The promotion of show ring animals vs. commercial or bull production question originates with breeders who are devoting their resources to one or the other. I understand their interest is directed to the marketing that benefits their personal operational agenda. I want to assure all members and all breeders that the ASA has many members whose purpose in raising Shorthorn cattle is not the same. It is the position of the ASA, staff and Board of Directors that we provide customer service for the needs of all membership as much as possible. It is also important to provide a united front as a breed. This business of only looking at the breed as a show ring breed or a commercial breed will present failure in the future. It is time to have a united focus that betters all segments of the breed and respects each other’s choices or reasons to raise Shorthorn cattle. True breed growth will only transpire when we as a membership show respect and present a unified image. In the Hereford breed when the polled association and the Hereford (horned) association merged, the ranks were sharply divided, and it took years to overcome. Only after each group conceded some devout beliefs and narrow views, did each segment gain respect for the other. The breed united and flourished. And, as their breed became more commercially accepted, their show type animals sored in price and the breed grew in popularity. If we evaluate other breeds in the industry the same type of progression transpired. It is important to have a commercial base under a breed for all involved to reap the benefits. Now, to answer the original questions. First, the audit for the past fiscal year, showed the ASA spent $108,000 on breed promotion last year this is up from $78,000 the previous year. All show expenses, premium monies, and advertising of any type that benefit the breed are included in the total for breed promotion. Last fiscal year, 45% of total breed promotion was spent on show promotion and expenses. The remaining 55% went to general ASA advertising; including commercial advertising. When I go back to 2016-2017 fiscal year, the $78,000 breaks out very similarly, with around 46% being shows and expenses with the remaining 54% for general ASA advertising; including commercial advertising. Both gross breed promotion amounts include all co-op advertising contributed by the ASA. Perhaps some of these questions arose because the American Rancher shows primarily feature commercial type operations. Just so everyone knows, the time each breeder gets on the show is paid for by that breeder. It is their time to tell the industry about what they do. Some who have paid to be part of this program would be considered both commercial and show operations. Yes, they do exist - breeders who are doing both. They produce commercial cattle and show cattle, and market both. If you are interested in participating in a future American Rancher show, please feel free to contact me. The next question may be how many ASA members are show and how many are commercial. There is really no way to determine this number. We are all members of the ASA and the goal we have in common is to promote the Shorthorn breed. The vast majority of the animals exhibited at ASA national shows are ET born calves. Around 10% of all registrations are ET calves and around 50% of those are shown at national shows. There are many, many breeders who do both – run a commercial operation and support the regional show system, state fairs and/or county fairs – an important function that keeps Shorthorn in front of the industry at the grass roots level. These folks fall into a combination show-commercial group. The ASA does not have this type of information showing how many breeders are combination show-commercial operations. Polling from the 2015 Impact Conference does show that a majority of our membership/breeders most likely fall into this category as a combination show-commercial operation. As an Association and Board of Directors we want to be transparent. Everyone wants what is best for the ASA and the Shorthorn breed, your Board and staff work every day to try and maintain that. Many things are changing in our industry and will continue to change. It becomes important for us to make the Develop Better Shorthorn Cattle (see the difference in 5 years) adjustments that keep us up to speed with the technology our industry provides. I believe our breed is making good strides with Shorthorn Breeders Producing Better Animals new memberships and producing quality Shorthorn cattle. The Use Extensive Culling Practices selection process of improving the cattle in our breed is always Create Sire Test Program (fully operational program in 2 years) evolving. The animals we see in the show ring today contribute to the commercial industry and bull market. The bulls being raised Identify Cooperator Commercial Test Herds contribute to the show ring. An In-Depth Look at Selection Indices: Part 3 We’ve reached the finale in the series of articles discussing the lineup of available selection indices for Shorthorn breeders and customers. After covering the basics of what goes into a selection index in January, and further explaining $Calving Ease and $Feedlot in February, March finds us with two final pieces of the index puzzle to piece together: $British Maternal Index ($BMI) and $Fescue. $British Maternal Index The written definition of $BMI on the ASA website is as follows: “This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.) in a maternal breeding program. Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth (WW) and carcass traits (REA, Fat, MB) are desired with a strong maternal component (CED, Milk, CEM) aimed at moderate mature size (YW), optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity.” A few points of emphasis can be gleaned from this Websteresque definition. First and foremost, you can figure out that there are several traits of interest included in $BMI. In a more comprehensive scenario like this one, there are more traits that become involved. I think you will notice that the production situation outlined in this index is more complex than $Feedlot, and certainly more involved than $Calving Ease. Many of America’s commercial cattle producers have their programs set up with management similar to what is described in $BMI: British-based cows, selling calves at weaning, and retaining replacements heifers. With most commercial cattlemen selling calves at weaning, the economic drivers of this sector of their enterprise are

live calves and pounds of calf at weaning. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for the CED and WW EPDs to play a significant part of $BMI. Weaning weight has arguably the most significant impact on $BMI of any included traits. When retaining females for the breeding herd, they need to be able to have a live calf, produce milk to raise that calf, and do so in a moderate mature size. While we have EPDs to measure two of these 3 traits (CEM and Milk), we have to use YW as an indicator trait for mature size since there is a not current EPD for mature cow weight in the Shorthorn genetic evaluation. A higher YW EPD has a more negative impact on $BMI, as bigger YW indicates a larger mature cow size. Even though it is not a direct point of emphasis in the scenario outlined for $BMI, carcass traits (REA, Fat, Marb) do play a role in the calculation, albeit smaller than the other traits outlined. Once these cattle are sold at weaning and enter the feedlot, the ones with the genetic capability to perform on the rail become more valuable to feeders. When the $BMI index was developed, The American Shorthorn Association did not have a Stayability EPD to include in $BMI. Obviously, the ability of a female to stay in the cow herd productively has an impact on her ability to add profit to the ranch’s bottom line. Like I mentioned in the previous article for $Feedlot, it’s not as easy to edit an index as to just stick the Stayability EPD into the $BMI formula and it still work properly. There have been several discussions amongst staff, ASA BOD and breeders involved in ASA committees on the best way to improve this index going forward. $Fescue The youngest and most unique member of the Shorthorn index lineup is $Fescue. The components of $Fescue are very similar to $BMI, but with an

added genomic piece to the puzzle. The addition of $Fescue is only for those animals who have had the Fescue Tolerance T-Snip test that is offered by AgBotanica performed and recorded with ASA. The test results are reported on a 0-50 scale, with cattle scoring a 50 considered to be most tolerant of toxic fescue. Research from AgBotanica indicates that cows with incrementally higher scores for the fescue tolerance test weaned off heavier calves than those with lower scores (40s weaned off heavier calves than 30s, who weaned off heavier than 20s, etc.) The methodology behind $Fescue includes the calculation of $BMI with the Fescue Tolerance test score incorporated into the equation as a weighted factor. With the research conducted by AgBotanica showing how much of an effect the score has on weaning weight produced, it was possible to weight the score into a selection index. The most logical piece to incorporate with $Fescue is $BMI, as a production scenario that is most likely to be impacted by grazing toxic fescue is a cow/calf situation like the one outlined for $BMI. Wrap Up With this look into the components of each selection index that is offered to ASA members, hopefully you now have a better idea of what makes up these tools and have more confidence to use them in your mating decisions. As always, these are just a few of the available tools out there to help you breed better cattle. A tool is only useful if it’s used properly, and only using one tool to try and do a complex job (like breeding cattle) can prove very difficult. Use your knowledge of your herd, in addition to the available tools like EPDs and selection indices, to make the most informed decisions. =

NationalWEstern Stock show 2019 NWSS Show Honoree Dr. Les Mathers III Leveldale Farms

Dr. Les Mathers III graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Finance, as well as from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine with an M.D. He then completed his residency in Family Medicine at the university of Illinois as the Chief Resident. He taught and directed a family medicine residency program in Texas before returning to Illinois to start his full-time medical practice in Peoria. He was the fourth generation in his family to graduate from the University of Illinois. Over the years, he has served in multiple leadership roles in medicine, finance and agriculture. He is still active in healthcare education as he teaches and gives presentations to students all over the country. Leveldale started by Les’s great-great grandfather, in 1852. The name Leveldale came from the level ground where the farm began. Leveldale was known for having the “ideal Shorthorn breed” image in the 20s, 30s and 40s. Les and his sister Laura own Leveldale Shorthorns in Mason City, IL. His family includes a son, Tom and his wife Kristin (they weren’t able to make it today), and daughters, Katie and husband Paul Velting (in attendance) and Lindsay Mathers, whose daughter, Mary Ainsleigh Mathers, stayed at home. Laura and her husband John Coniff also raise cattle at their home in New Mexico. The operation includes corn, soybeans and specialty crop production; seedstock genetics, including Shorthorn

and Durham Red; and antibiotic and hormone free, specialty custom beef. In breeding seedstock, Leveldale Farms has been dedicated to breeding highly fertile, easy calving, rapid growth cattle on moderate nutrition and low maintenance. Their goal is to breed, raise and sell cattle with traits which are functional in both the purebred and commercial industries and are attractive enough to adapt to the show ring. Over the years, Leveldale Farms has been termed the “Headquarters for Herd Bulls.” The list of prominent sires used in the past and presently have sired many national champions including many of the animals shown in the pen show at Denver. Mathers is a lifetime Shorthorn breeder and was the president of the Illinois Junior Shorthorn Association in 1965. He has been a junior and open exhibitor at the Illinois State Fair for

many decades. His love of showing cattle spans over 50 years as he has exhibited at regional and national shows. As an active member of the Illinois Shorthorn Association, he has served on various committees and led numerous activities. In addition, Les has served on almost all of the ASA committees. Les is the third generation in his family to receive the prestigious Builder of the Breed award in 2007 and the third generation to serve on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors, including a term as ASA President. Currently, he serves as a Director of the ASA Shorthorn Foundation Board. He has also been recognized as the Illinois Beef Association Seedstock Producer of the Year. Congratulations to Dr. Les Mathers III on being selected as the 2019 National Western Stock Show honoree. =

NationalWEstern Stock show 2019 Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year by Shelby Rogers

The 2019 Shorthorn Herdsman of the Year was awarded to Ethan Crow of Crow Creek Farms in Lawton, Oklahoma. At a very young age of nine years old, Ethan began raising and showing Shorthorns. Since then, he has continued to help his family develop their outstanding Shorthorn herd. “My family decided to start raising Shorthorns because they are a very gentle breed and easy to work with,” Ethan said. “That combined with them having many other great characteristics made it an easy choice for us.” Since they began raising Shorthorns, they have had success with many National Champions. Crow Creek Farms raised the 2017 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference Reserve Grand Champion Prospect Steer. They have also had many other National Champions, notably bulls. Most recently,

their bull, TJH Bo’s Maxim, was Grand Champion this year at National Western Stock Show & Fort Worth Stock Show. He was also Reserve Grand Champion at the 2018 American Royal Livestock Show. Maxim was named the 20172018 South Central Region Shorthorn Bull Runner-Up. Crow Creek Farms also had other division winners in the South Central Region. Ethan’s role model in the cattle industry growing up was Jeff Sargent. He watched and learned many things from Jeff; from cattle techniques to life skills. He also worked for Dustin Glover in his show barn for 1.5 years and learned to fit from Kirk Steirwalt. Ethan was very involved with the Oklahoma Junior Shorthorn Association; serving as the youngest president at age 14 and continuing until he was 22 and aged out of showing.

“Raising Shorthorns and fitting great show cattle is what Ethan truly loves to do,” said Jerrell Crow, Ethan’s dad. Jerrell said he has a passion for cattle and it has made him who he is today. “It was a great honor to be selected because there were lots of other breeders that may have deserved it more than I have, and it is very cool to be awarded this prestigious award,” Ethan said. “It is a huge accomplishment to be selected.” When he isn’t working at Crow Creek Farms with their Shorthorns, Ethan spends his time working in the oilfield. The Shorthorn Herdsman award is in honor of Lawrence Grathwohl, presented by the Grathwohl family and sponsored by the Shorthorn Foundation. It was an almost perfect weather day for the Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus Pen Show in The Yards, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 50s. Fifteen pens totaling 55 head made the trip through the Stockyards Arena to be evaluated by Dr. Dan Shike. Following the competitive action in the ring, Shorthorn enthusiasts packed the pens studying the offerings from each exhibitor and enjoying the ASA Social. The number of interested lookers visiting with all the breeders was even stronger than last year. In the show ring, Champion Pen of 3 ShorthornPlus Heifers went to Stepping Stone Ranch of Edison, KS. These April and May heifers averaged 782 pounds and had a WDA of 2.87 pounds per day. The Champion Pen of 3 ShorthornPlus Bulls was exhibited by Jungels Shorthorn Farms of Kathryn, ND. The trio of white calves averaged 993 pounds with a WDA of 3.17. Champion Pen of 3 Shorthorn Heifers went to Pearl Valley Shorthorns of Valley City, ND. These heifers averaged 802 pounds and posted a WDA of 2.49 pounds per day. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 Shorthorn Heifer honors went to Vogel Shorthorns of Rogers, ND. Their March and April entry weighed in at 742 pounds with a WDA of 2.42. In the Pen of 5 Shorthorn Bull Show, Champion Pen went to Leveldale Farms of Mason City, IL. Their junior bull calves averaged 1156 pounds and a WDA of 3.38 pounds per day. Jungels Shorthorn Farm exhibited the Reserve Champion Pen of 5. These spring bull calves averaged 1046 pounds with a 3.42 pounds per day on WDA. The show finale, the Pen of 3 Shorthorn bulls, saw Champion Pen of 3 honors go to Jungels Shorthorn Farm and Cates Farm of Modoc, IN. Their pen of spring bull calves average 1083 pounds with a WDA of 3.51. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 honors went to Crawford Shorthorns of Roca, NE. This trio of junior bull calves averaged 1122 pounds with a WDA of 3.17 pounds per day. Congratulations to all exhibitors on 22

Livestock Marketeers induct three into Hall of Fame DENVER — The Livestock Marketeers — An informal fraternity of livestock fieldmen, auctioneers, sale managers and related livestock business leaders met for their 54th Annual Banquet at the National Western Club on January 19th. The event was hosted by American Live Stock; master of ceremonies was J. Neil Orth, Executive Vice President of the American-International Charolais Association and 1984 Hall of Fame inductee. The Livestock Marketeers group was formed in 1965 by Harry Green, Ross Miller and Claud Willett. Their purpose was to establish a fraternal organization of livestock professionals, and to make annual awards to encourage younger members of the industry to succeed in their chosen profession. Tommy Barnes Tommy is a graduate of The University of Tennessee where he received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. Directly out of college he took a job with T.E. Mitchell and Son in Albert, New Mexico. The ranch raised both registered and commercial Hereford cattle along with registered quarter horses. After that he began his nine year career with the American Hereford Association. He initially travelled the states of Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois after which he serviced Oklahoma. When he finished his tenure with the AHA he moved directly

into his career as an auctioneer. He serves as an auctioneer for several elite purebred operation all over the country Stuart Wilson Stuart Wilson grew up on a purebred livestock and grain farm near Findlay, Illinois, where he raised Shorthorn cattle and Poland China hogs. He was active in both 4-H and FFA showing at the local, state, and national levels. He was a member of the 1966 Illinois State FFA winning livestock judging team which placed second in the national contest at the American Royal. Stuart graduated from Western Illinois University in 1971 with a BS in animal science. While at WIU, he was the founding president of the Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity, and a member of Block and Bridle. He was on Western’s highly successful livestock judging team in 1970. Graduate work followed at the University of Missouri. In 1971, Stuart began his career right out of college as a field representative for The Shorthorn World. He was the publisher of the magazine at the time it was sold in 1976. In 1972, he became an insurance agent for American Live Stock Insurance Company/Harding and Harding. In 1973, he formed Stuart Wilson Sale Management which managed cattle sales throughout the United States and Canada for over four decades.

In 2006, Stuart joined American Live Stock Insurance Company/Harding and Harding as the manager of the cattle department. Today he is the manager and head underwriter for the Livestock Division of American Live Stock, a subsidiary of Markel Services, Inc. Stuart and his wife, Ann, reside on the family farm near Findlay, Illinois. They have a daughter, Robyn, and a granddaughter, Avery. Stuart and Ann have been married 45 years, and they are both active members of the Findlay United Methodist Church. Fred Stivers (Posthumous) Fred Stivers was a sought after ringman for over four decades and regarded by many as the best photographer in the business. Growing up in Ohio, Fred was competitive in the show ring with Angus, Shorthorn and Hereford steers, winning the Ohio State Fair and Champion Shorthorn in Chicago. Fred’s livestock marketing career began with the Charolais Way and continued with the Simmental Register and then the Drovers Journal. Stivers portraits of the ideal bull and cow for several breeds were featured in Herman Purdy’s book “Breeds of Cattle”. While Fred did not have any immediate family his extended family of cattle people covered the entire country. =

fort Worth STOCK SHOW FWSS Show Honoree

Bill Rasor - WHR Shorthorns Bill Rasor, owner of WHR Shorthorns, began showing Shorthorn cattle in the 1960s, and exhibited at the Fort Worth Stock Show for the first time in 1963. The Rasor family had been involved in raising Shorthorns since the 1920s, but Bill started developing the current herd in the 80s, with initial purchases from Jack Ragsdale, Cates Farms, and several others. Bill and his wife Becky have two children, Will and Ann, who were active showring participants in the late 80s and throughout the 90s, competing at shows throughout Texas as well as at Junior Nationals, Denver and Louisville. A major early accomplishment occurred when Will won Grand Champion at the 1991 Junior Nationals. WHR has bred several other Junior National Champions since that time, as well as champions at the major livestock shows across the country. WHR began hosting the Lone Star Edition sale in 1994, and the 25th annual sale will be in March of this year at the ranch in Van Alstyne, Texas. The production sale has approximately 60 lots of breeding cattle, including show heifers, bred cows, herd bull prospects, and embryo packages. Bill credits his success in the industry to staying consistent with moderate, functional cattle, investments in proven cow families, and the use of fresh herd bull genetics for continuous improvement. The Cumberland and 3D cow families

are some of the most prominent and successful in the WHR herd, and their influence can be seen throughout the breed. WHR currently has 150 purebred Shorthorn females, as well as an active embryo transfer program that includes 100 recipient cows. They calve September through November, and again from January through April, avoiding the more extreme winter and summer months. One of Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite parts of raising and selling cattle is seeing his customers enjoy success in the show ring and with their breeding cattle. He especially enjoys working with his junior customers, and appreciates the scholarship opportunities that showring success often brings. Bill and Becky treasure the friendships they have formed over the years with customers and fellow Shorthorn breeders. Bill has been an active leader in the Shorthorn breed, including being a

past President of the Texas Shorthorn Association, and 2 terms as President of the American Shorthorn Association. Currently, Bill is active as the President of the Shorthorn Foundation, a position he has held for many years. Under his leadership, the foundation has grown and now awards scholarships to 11 juniors involved in the breed each year. The Foundation also works with families to establish memorial scholarships, and supports the education and research missions of the association. Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contributions to the Shorthorn breed, through the superior genetics of the WHR herd as well as his personal leadership in breed activities, is to be commended. Congratulations to Bill Rasor of WHR Shorthorns for being selected as the Fort Worth Stock Show Honoree. =

= Junior Corner Junior National Mindset Hopefully everyone is having a great start to the year. We are getting more comfortable with writing 2019 and so I’m sure you are counting down the days for the 2019 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference in Lebanon, Tennessee. Before I jump into the exciting junior nationals updates, I have some business to take care of. The junior board would like to thank everyone that donated and/or bought items from the Funding the Future online fundraiser we held February 19. All the support from the Shorthorn breeders is greatly appreciated and is the reason the NJSS is able to do what it does. Juniors, if you know someone who has contributed, donated or purchased something from any of our fundraisers; Leading a Legacy, Deck the Stalls, Funding the Future, or the Shorthorn Foundation, please be sure to personally thank them. If the first thing that popped in to your head was, Shorthorn Junior Nationals, that’s a great answer. Even adults look forward to their “showcation” each year and the Junior National won’t disappoint in 2019. The Junior Board has some exciting things planned for our week in Tennessee; some new and some tried and true activities. Just imagine being on a game show in front of a big audience. Well, if you make it to the final round of quiz bowl, the championship round is going to be held at the banquet in front of everyone. Start studying your Shorthorn and beef facts now! Also, at the banquet this year we will hear the winning speech from the senior speech division. Don’t forgot to participate in the state cook-off night. Well that’s all for now and remember

Shorthorns Represented at NCBA The National Cattlemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beef Association Convention and Trade show was held January 30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; February 1 in New Orleans, Louisiana. There were more than 9,000 attendees that made their way through the trade show booths. This was the second year of the American Shorthorn Association re-designed booth and pull-ups with ASA data. Due to the size of the convention center, traffic through the trade show seemed a little slower, as attendees stayed by session rooms. Even with slower traffic, the booth attracted many attendees to stop and talk to the ASA

staff about the Shorthorn breed. The ASA staff handed out promotional materials to attendees and Shorthorn goody bags to those who stopped to learn more about the breed. There were many potential members and current breeders who stopped by the booth. Attendees enjoyed seeing the materials we had to offer and look forward to seeing us next year. The 2020 NCBA Convention and Trade Show will be held in San Antonio, Texas, on February 5-7. We hope to see you there! =

= News & Notes Farewell Gregory W. Smithers, age 70, of rural Pittsfield, Ill., passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at his home. He was born on February 12, 1948 in Pittsfield to Bill and Kate Roberts Smithers. He married Pam Griggs on August 14, 1971 at the United Methodist Church in Baylis, and she survives. Greg graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1966 and went on to work construction until he was drafted into the United States Army serving for two years. After his Honorable Discharge, he returned back home to work construction again. After marrying Pam, he began farming with his dad on the Smithers

Family Farm. In earlier years, he raised hogs, but spent many years raising Shorthorn cattle until present time, winning many state and national awards. Greg loved his horses and enjoyed breaking them and taking them on trail rides. He also liked to hunt in earlier years. Greg was a member of the Pike County Saddle Club and the Tri County Shorthorn Association. He was also a member of the American Legion, a 4-H member and later a 4-H committee member. Greg was a strong willed man with quick wit who greatly loved his family. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and always enjoyed watching and attending the events or sports they participated in. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pam; four sons, Travis Smithers of Pittsfield, Mike (Teija) Smithers of Pittsfield, and Jason Smithers of Pittsfield, and

Jess (Tracy) Smithers of Blue Mound; eight grandchildren, Schae Moore (Austin Hill), Isaac Smithers, Eli Smithers, Kameron Smithers, Raegan Smithers, Drew Smithers, Maggie Smithers, and Caleb Smithers; brother, Chuck (Tammy) Smithers of Pittsfield; two sisters, Debbie (Mike) Bruner of Springfield and Cindy (Mark) Allen of Pittsfield; and two aunts, Joan Renoud of Jacksonville and Gertrude Hobbs of Pittsfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; two nephews, Josh Bruner and Doug Lord; and his in-laws, Ralph and Rosie Griggs. Paint Valley Farms Awarded Cattlemen’s Seedstock Producer of the Year Award (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) –The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Paint Valley Farms of Millersburg, Ohio, the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award at the OCA awards banquet held Jan. 12, 2019, at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio. OCA and Farm World jointly sponsor the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award, which was created to recognize top beef seedstock producers in Ohio. The award presentation featured a video of Paint Valley Farms that was generously sponsored by the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders’ Association. Paint Valley Farms is owned and operated by Lee Miller and his wife, Dawn; 58

their children, Megan, Whitney, Grant and Derek; and herdsman Gretchen Straits. The family manages close to 160 brood cows, 120 of which are registered Shorthorn females. The Millers sell cattle through online and private treaty sales and have sold cattle through the Ohio Beef Expo for nearly 10 years. In 2019, Paint Valley Farms will host their first live bull sale at their farm on March 23.
