WHR Breeders WHR Assessments for 2019 were sent in November. If you have not received yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2019 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2019.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) Positive Attitudes are Contagious

ust when we think spring has arrived, here comes another dose of winter. As I write this article, midApril, we have had a few days of green grass weather. At the same time, nearly 30 inches of snow is forecast in South Dakota and a large cold front is sweeping the nation. Consequently, it looks like a late spring for grass in most parts of the country and then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the flooding in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. The adversity of these extreme weather conditions creates hardships on agricultural communities across this great United States. Positive attitudes can become difficult for breeders to maintain. These are trying times in the world around us from political views to the global economy. I will not delve into the politics of our nation, but I would like to address the political divisions we have in our country with no energy to find a good-for all solution. This non-cooperative action sends a message across the land increasing uncertainty and frustration. Negative attitudes are addictive and infectious. It is important to compare this to how we function as a breed. Cooperation and unity are essential if we are to grow our breed! There are many positives to focus our efforts upon and to be optimistic about that will build a better future for the Shorthorn breed. We can start this building process by concentrating on several constructive areas. For example, the new Mission and Vision Statements and Core Strategies and Objectives will help build a stronger and better Shorthorn Breed. Many of these focal points have been addressed in the

past, but are now being made a priority. Over the past three weekends, we had some fabulous Shorthorn sales. The demand for good Shorthorn genetics is proving to have more value. The positive attitude of those producing and those purchasing Shorthorns carries on. This little run of weekend offerings started in Texas with a great sale where the demand for young show stock was bringing premiums. Then on to Ohio for a very successful bull sale; proving that there is a strong market for good Shorthorn bulls. The industry is recognizing the value of Shorthorn genetics. The third weekend in Oklahoma saw two back-to-back sales sponsored by several families and breeders joining together with a positive plan to offer Shorthorn genetics to the industry and breed. These two sales were comprised of a few consignors with a common goal - to produce and market good Shorthorn Genetics. The market was strong for all aspects of the breed, from embryos and semen to show heifers, replacement females, bred females and donor cows. These folks over the past three weeks have focused on producing and offering good cattle with performance data and pedigree acceptance. The results speak for themselves with success for the breeders and the breed. The credit goes to the breeders for their efforts in being leaders in our great breed. I have focused on this three-week run of sales and those members and breeders who made it happen because it proves how success can be achieved even when there are adversities to overcome. If you stay positive and work at having success, the

upbeat confident attitude becomes very contagious. We have several activities in place and being planned to continue the positive movement of the breed. In 2021-2022, the ASA celebrates its 150th anniversary as the oldest beef breed association in the United States. The ASA Board has commissioned a 150th anniversary commemorative book to be published as part of this celebration. The early chapters are already written, with some cool and interesting historical facts; such as the Shorthorn influence in the origination of the Angus breed in England. This book will be a must have item! Behind the scenes at ASA we are in the organizational phases of designing a new advertising campaign for TV and print with Grant Co. advertising firm. This will be an exciting three-year project to promote our great breed. Shorthorn families with junior members are preparing for the Junior National in Lebanon, TN in June. This is a great family affair and the largest Shorthorn event of the year! We have had fantastic participation in the GEHP program to get Genomics recorded on the young females in the breed. Data from the Illinois Herd Sire Test is being promoted in the industry. Many breeders are now selecting their best in preparation to show the cream of the breed at fairs and national shows this year. It is time to get excited about our breed. The message and positive attitude each of us share daily in the industry and with other breeders is contagious â&#x20AC;&#x201C; catch it! =

Further Thoughts on the 2017 National Sire Test In the February issue, there was a Performance Review from the 2017 ASA National Sire Test (NST) at the University of Illinois highlighting what we gathered from the data on the first set of Shorthorn-sired calves to go through the NST program. The first round of the NST created some positive energy among breeders who are interested in performance testing and using data in their breeding programs. With this project, a lot of data was collected that is either new to the industry or hasn’t been as prevalent in the Shorthorn database. There have been some questions as to what data is the most important or should be emphasized by Shorthorn breeders. I don’t think there is a single correct answer to that, but I certainly have an opinion on what I think is important to consider as a breeder, as well as the Shorthorn breed as a whole. Feed Intake Having the NST calves on a GrowSafe system is the cornerstone for building a data bank for feed efficiency traits. While we do have some breeder submissions into our database, the NST data is the largest and most diverse set we have been able to collect to this point. While there are several pieces and parts to feed efficiency data, I feel that feed intake measurements are an integral piece. Measuring feed intake is a direct tie to feed costs. Simply put, cattle that eat less are going to have a lower feed bill. As agricultural input costs continue to rise, identifying cattle and genetics that can perform adequately on less feed is becoming more valuable. We have been able to collect and analyze cattle’s ability to gain on feed for a long time, but adding the intake piece to the puzzle gives us more opportunity to dissect the information. Figures such as Feed to Gain ratio and cost per pound of gain allow us to measure growth performance while factoring in efficiency and the economics of feeding cattle. Over the 188-day feeding trial, the average dry matter intake for all cattle was 18.6 pounds per day, with a range from 13.1 to 23.6 pounds of dry matter per day. 10

Over the course of that feeding period, the difference in the high and low intake calves from the NST comes out to 1,974 pounds of dry matter consumed.

While labeled by many as a “convenience trait”, I believe there are more cowmen that would define it as a necessity rather than a convenience! In the 2017 NST,

Carcass Merit As seedstock producers, carcass traits are several steps removed from our operations at the cow/calf level. In general, I think as seedstock producers we sometimes do not emphasize carcass traits because they don’t directly affect our bottom line (unless we are retaining ownership of feeder cattle). However, producing carcasses that meet industry standards does have an impact on our customers, as well as those who are buying and feeding their calves. Cattle need to meet grading standards in order to be eligible for premiums on the grid, and they need to do so with an acceptable yield to avoid discounts. The cattle in the 2017 NST were successful in meeting these benchmarks, with 85% of the cattle grading USDA Choice or better, which is right in line with the current “85% of the industry standards. cattle grading In terms of USDA USDA Choice Yield Grade, 86% or better” of the cattle graded YG 3 or lower. These cattle were able to produce enough “86% of the red meat product cattle graded YG without excess cover. The 3 or lower” fat protocol for the NST is a good representation of what cow herds are like in our nation’s commercial industry, and these cattle met the marks that they needed to hit in order to produce cattle that are profitable on the rail. Docility I think we can all agree that docility is a trait of importance in the operation.

docility scores (1 to 6 scale) were taken on all cattle at weaning. 74% of the cattle graded as a 1 (Very Docile) when evaluated for temperament at weaning. While docility is viewed as a trait to make cattle work easier and safer, it had an effect on performance in the NST. The average weaning weight ratio for the cattle that scored a 1 for docility was 101, while those that scored 2 or 3 averaged a 97 weaning weight ratio. The cattle with scores of 1 had higher marbling scores and better feed to gain ratios as well, requiring less feed per pound of gain. Over the 188 day feeding trail, the 1-scored cattle had an ADG 0.19 pounds per day more than their counterparts scored as 2 or 3. That’s an additional 36 pounds gained.

In our constantly evolving industry, we can’t sit still in our pursuit of breeding better cattle that fit what the customer wants. In recent times, demand has developed for docile, above average carcass merit, and low-maintenance, feed efficient cattle. I don’t see those traits becoming deemphasized anytime soon. In fact, I would bet that we continue to hear more about the need for cattle that fit these criteria moving forward. The breeders and breeds that make a commitment to raising these cattle will take a place at the forefront of the industry. Thanks to the NST, we have an opportunity to identify Shorthorn genetics to fill the needs and gain our position at the front of the herd. =

She hopes to find herself working for the cattle industry one day as she continues to pursue her passion for advocating the agriculture industry. Wade Minihan YOUTH ACTIVITIES INTERN Wade Minihan grew up on a commercial cow operation, as well as a Registered Hereford operation in Wheaton, KS. The operation is managed by his parents, along with his older brother, twin brother, and younger sister. Wade is currently attending Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS pursuing a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Agribusiness, with a minor in Marketing. His involvement on the collegiate level consists of VicePresident of Block and Bridle on the campus of Fort Hays State University. = Junior Corner Trading in Textbooks for Showsticks As students zip up their backpacks and close their textbooks for the year, they’re picking up blowers and turning on fans instead. It’s time for sunshine and lots of hours logged in the barn. This is because one of the best times of the year has officially arrived – Jr. National season. The days until Tennessee are ticking, and we are all so excited for the week planned! But something we can’t plan is the positive energy that exhibitors and their families never fail to bring to the show year after year. I have been to a few other breeds’ Jr. Nationals and I don’t think any other one is more inviting than Shorthorns are. The beauty of this show is the fact that

each exhibitor has the chance to showcase their best skill. They might not exhibit the champion heifer, but they could be a wiz on the grill or have a knack for public speaking. One of my most vivid memories is being a sweaty palmed, white-as-a-ghost little girl waiting in line to give her speech. While waiting in line, I ended up meeting one of my closest friends to this day. I encourage everyone to participate in contests, no matter how nerve-racking it may be! We are looking forward to seeing everyone and wish you all safe travels to the land of Music City! =

Show Region Winners Winners will be recognized at the American Shorthorn Association’s Awards Banquet. * Editor’s Note: Winners are selected through a point tally process based on points earned at various Regional shows and provided by the American Shorthorn Association and the Regional Shows. Point amounts are based on the show and number of head exhibited. As with the reporting of show results, Shorthorn Country assumes no responsibility for partial or incomplete listings of multiple ownership of animals. Ownership information was provided by the American Shorthorn Association. We regret any errors or omissions which may have occurred.

Regional Qualifications To Qualify for Regional Points, an animal must be exhibited at a minimum of two (2) shows within the region. Any combination of the following shows will meet the regional qualifications: • Regional Show • Super Regional Show • National Show within the designated region Only shows that are attended within that region count towards that region’s points. A National Show within its region will count towards Regional Points, BUT Regional Shows do not count towards National Points. In order to be awarded the Regional Show Bull or Show Female of the Year and Runner-Up, you must win a division within that region. In the event that the regional show does not use the provided ASA Division breaks, the following policy will be used: Any points that an animal receives at a regional show where ASA division breaks are not used, the animal and points will be moved to the proper division that the animal qualifies for based on ASA Show Classifications.

Junior Board Candidates Allyssa Obrecht is a senior at Harlan Community High School. After graduation, she plans to attend Iowa State University to obtain a degree in Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary Medicine and continue her education at Iowa State Veterinary School. Allyssa is the daughter of Donald and Jennifer Obrecht of Harlan, Iowa. Allyssa is a fourth generation Shorthorn breeder who has a passion for growing her own Shorthorn herd. She is even able to AI all of her cows, choosing bulls to use and setting cows up to be bred. Allyssa has been very active in 4-H over the years including serving as local club president and county council president. She was a member of her FFA chapter soils team that placed 12th at the National FFA Soil Judging contest. Outside of raising Shorthorn cattle, she also raises, shows and sells goats. She exhibited the third overall breeding doe at the Iowa State Fair. “AJSA board members have motivated and inspired me to do my best in contests at junior nationals,” Allyssa said. “It taught me to be a good example for younger members who hopefully will look up to me one day as a board member.” Emily Dahse is currently attending Colorado State University, studying Animal Science. She hopes to become a food animal veterinarian with a focus on bovine reproduction. Emily is the daughter of Matt and Angie Dahse of Thurman, Ohio. She has been a part of the Shorthorn breed since she was eight years old. She first fell in love with Shorthorns when looking at a Shorthorn Country. Emily is a member of the CSU Block and Bridle Club and helped with the Green and Gold show they host in con36

junction with the Showtimes Blackout Jackpot Show. She has been active in the Ohio Junior Shorthorn Association, serving as the treasurer in 2017 and secretary in 2018. Emily has also attended the Ohio State Fair for many years exhibiting Shorthorn cattle. “I have always admired the Red Coats,” Emily said. “I have wanted to apply for the board for a few year and this year I decided it could be my year.” Josh Vachal is a junior at Valley City High School. After graduation, he plans to attend North Dakota State University to obtain a degree in Agricultural Business. Josh is the son of Shawn and Kim Vachal of Valley City, North Dakota. His family raises Shorthorns and exhibits them all over North Dakota. They also exhibited a pen of heifers at National Western Stock Show this year. Josh is active on many boards in North Dakota and has put together a regional Simmental show. He enjoys being involved in the cattle industry and being a leader in the industry. His involvement on boards has made him find an interest in politics and he plans to pursue that one day. “I love to be around people and cattle,” Josh said. “I am very social and I would love a way to represent the Shorthorn breed. The AJSA is like a family to me and I would love to serve with the other board members.” Korbin Collins is currently attending Joliet Junior College. After completing her associates degree, she plans to attend the University of Illinois to obtain a degree in Ag Leadership. Korbin is the daughter of Brian and Tiffney Collins of Flanagan, Illinois. Korbin has grown up showing Here-

fords, but recently gained an interest in Shorthorns after showing her first Shorthorn a few year ago and after attending junior nationals for the first-time last year. While at Joliet Junior College, Korbin is a member of the livestock judging team as well as serving as an officer for the Student Agriculture Association. She was also very active in her high school FFA Chapter, serving in many officer positions, receiving her state degree, and competing in contests. “After attending Shorthorn Junior Nationals, which was one of the best junior nationals I have ever attended, I decided right then I wanted to run for the Shorthorn board.” Korbin said. “I always had an interest in being on a national board but after becoming part of the Shorthorn breed, I knew that I wanted to become more than just a member.” Mikayla Wetzel is currently a senior at Faribault High School where she will be graduating with honors. She plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall to obtain a degree in Agricultural Business and Accounting. She is the daughter of Mike and Lisa Wetzel of Faribault, Minnesota. Mikayla was selected as the 5th Overall ShorthornPlus and Reserve Champion Bred & Owned ShorthornPlus Heifer at Junior Nationals in 2018. Mikayla has been on 4-H and FFA livestock judging teams that have participated at the national contests. She was active in her high school National Honor Society serving as the secretary in 2018 and the vice-president in 2019. She has been attending NJSS since 2013 and has been an officer for the Minnesota Junior Shorthorn Association. “I have a passion for animal agriculture and have participated in many activities to help prepare me for this role,” Mikayla said. “I am ready to take it on and be a positive role model for the youth of our association.” ...continued on next page

Tayler Bacon is currently attending Kansas State University to obtain a degree in Animal Science and Industry Production Management with a minor in Business. She is the daughter of Joel and Rebecca Bacon of Powhattan, Kansas. Tayler grew up around the show industry. She has attended many national shows including the National Western Stock Show, American Royal Livestock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show and more. Tayler has attended 11 junior nationals and currently serves as the vice-president of the Kansas Junior Shorthorn Association. She also recently served as an intern at the National Western Stock Show. She grew up active in both FFA

and 4-H participating in many contests at the local, state and national level. “I want to give back to the organization that has given me so much,” Tayler said. “It has been a dream of mine to wear the red jacket since I was a little girl. I want to help show youth what they can gain from being active in the Shorthorn industry.” Whitney Miller is currently attending the ATI branch of The Ohio State University to obtain a degree in Agricultural Business. She is the daughter Lee and Dawn Miller of Millersburg, Ohio. Whitney helps with her family’s Shorthorn operation, Paint Valley Farms, by assisting with management,

selection of breeding, and as a farm hand to take care of the herd. Whitney’s family has been awarded with local, state and national level awards for their Shorthorn cattle. She has held offices in her local 4-H Club and FFA Chapter. While in high school she was also on the varsity soccer team for all four years. Whitney is part of the OSU ATI Honors Society. “The relationships I could make with the fellow board members and junior members in the Shorthorn breed would be life changing,” Whitney said. “I would love to be a part of the innovative group that establishes ideas for junior national and other breed activities.” =
