Coping with Covid-19

lot of changes have taken place around the industry in the past month. Some events have been canceled while others are taking place with several restrictions. This list is growing all the time and we need to stay prepared for additional changes. The North American International Livestock Exhibition (NAILE) is still planning to take place, but with restrictions due to Covid-19. No spectators will be allowed at the show. Only those who have a barn badge (obtained by submitting entries) will be allowed in the building – a privilege we all take for granted. The major Deck the Stalls fundraiser benefiting the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference and AJSA which normally takes place on Saturday at the NAILE has been postponed. This year the Foundation Heifer, donated by Martindell Farms LLC, will sell in the “Where Future Generations are Created” Sale during Louisville on Sunday night Nov. 15 at the Hilton Garden Inn. We will also have an auction sale with the normal items offered at the Leading a Legacy and Deck the Stalls at the ASA Office open house reception on Dec. 4, 2020 around 6 pm. This will be in conjunction with the ASA Annual Meeting activities. This sale will also be presented online at www. CCi.live so everyone can participate in this important event for the sponsorship of our Junior National. ASA members should have received a letter explaining the Red White & Roan Club along with a self-addressed stamped envelope for pledges to the Junior National and junior activities. Please review the letter and send in your pledges; we accept credit cards, checks or donations can be billed through the Digital Beef registry on a monthly or quarterly basis. Your assistance is greatly needed to ensure our Junior National is one of the best. 8

The shows have been hit with different regulations for each state. I’m sure you are aware that the 2021 National Western Stock Show in Denver was canceled. As a testament to the resourcefulness of our industry, a group of industry leaders teamed up and formed the Cattlemen’s Congress show to be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in January as a replacement for the NWSS. Most other breeds have committed to this event to be their national show that would normally be held in Denver. The ASA has also committed to the Cattlemen’s Congress as the National Shorthorn Show and will award points towards the Show Heifer and Bull of the Year. We will be holding all the same events at the Cattlemen’s Congress as in Denver, including the Yards Show and the Summit National Shorthorn Sale. I have just received notice that the Fort Worth Stock Show is canceled as well. I am doing a re-write here at the last minute before the magazine goes to press. With the cancellation of Fort Worth, the Cattlemen’s Congress is sure to be the biggest and best show event of the year. Many breeds will be moving their major shows to Oklahoma making the Cattlemen’s Congress the largest cattle show of the season too. I personally urge everyone to attend this event as it may be our largest National Show of the 20202021 show season. The accommodations will be simple and easy - we have hotel blocks reserved at a very fair price and less than two (2) miles from the fairgrounds. The Oklahoma City airport is only three (3) miles from the show grounds. No passes or parking permits will be needed. Just show up and enjoy the comradery of fellow Shorthorn breeders and see some outstanding cattle. This event is destined to be the leading event in this year’s show season. It will be run by professionals whose expertise will make it impressive.

I hope to see everyone there. We launched the Shorthorn Beef Locally Raised program in October and there are more breeders participating all the time. Please look into this - it could be for you. The Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet is Dec. 4 and 5 at the Hilton K.C. Airport in Kansas City. On Friday the 4th, we will host everyone at the ASA Office with a social and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The party begins at 5:00 pm and at 6:00 we will host Deck the Stalls Extravaganza at the Office fundraiser sale for the Junior National and AJSA. The Hilton Airport Hotel will provide shuttle service to and from the ASA Office for this event on Friday evening. Then on Saturday, Dec. 5th our “Building Your Brand” Educational Forum will be held at the Hilton at 8:00am featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Tom Field from the University of Nebraska, discussing and sharing ideas and opportunities to market your products. The Annual Meeting will be that afternoon followed by a social and then the Awards Banquet where the Merit Award, Heritage Award and Builder of the Breed is announced. Registration and hotel reservations can be made online at shorthorn.org. The deadline for registration is November 20 with the hotel reservation cutoff date of November 12. The Hilton has indicated that masks will be required in the hallways and public areas. The private rooms where the activities are held, masks will not be required. The rooms will be set up for social distancing. Please understand during these trying times we must adhere to some restrictions and maintain a safe environment. By doing this we can still have our events and enjoy the fellowship of the Shorthorn Family! =

ASA FAQs With the ASA Annual Meeting coming up in about a month, we are gearing our brains for the biggest educational event we host for membership. I hope that a lot of you are making plans to join us in KC on December 5 for this event. With a theme of “Building Your Brand”, there will be plenty of information to be gathered on marketing, promotion, and improving your operation’s footprint in the marketplace. There are also plans for some virtual educational programming in the works, to make up for some lost time on the Annual Meeting schedule. I decided to get into education mode a month early with this article. I will briefly address several topics. Some are tidbits of information you might not have known about, while others are answers to frequently asked questions. There is a bit of variety to the topics of discussion in this article. 1. The term “free by pedigree” is somewhat of a misnomer. If both parents are tested free of a genetic condition, I might be more comfortable with saying an animal is likely to be free as well. But we are working with nature, and in nature genes are always capable of a mutation. While the possibility of this happening is miniscule, it is possible. Describing an animal as “free by pedigree” because there are no tested carriers on the pedigree is not necessarily an accurate representation of that animal. 2. Having a WW EPD of a certain value does not equate to calves that will weigh a certain amount at weaning. We are supposed to use EPDs as a tool to compare genetic differences in two sires’ progeny, not use them as a predictor of an actual weight calves can achieve. There are too many factors that affect weights of a calf to be able to have an EPD as an actual weight predictor. Put ten genetically identical calves on ten 10

farms in ten states, and you will get back ten different actual weaning weights due to differences in environment, feeding programs, and management. 3. As a comparison tool, contemporary groups are very important to our genetic evaluation. I know that I preach the value of turning in the data from your herd, and that the actual measurements get emphasized. Actual measurements and data points are very important, but they are more important for what they give us when submitted in proper contemporary groups. As discussed in Point #2, EPDs are a comparative tool. Contemporary groups are where we make comparisons between individual performance and then use those differences to fuel movement in EPD calculation. While you may turn in a set of monster weaning weights, there will still be some calves whose WW EPD will be negatively impacted because it ranks below the group average. It’s important to remember that EPDs are a statistical calculation. The computer system doesn’t know a calf is the best-looking animal you ever raised, or that his mother is a 14-year old legend in your herd. It only knows what the data tells it and calculates from there. 4. Trying to determine parentage based off genotyped grandparents is not an accurate endeavor. If you have a calf whose sire does not have DNA on file, but his paternal grandsire does, there’s still a lot of missing pieces in the DNA marker puzzle. Simplified genetics teaches us that any mammal gets half of its genetic material from Mom and the other half from Dad. We can test for parentage when the parent is genotyped because we know that half of the puzzle. If we take it a step further, Mom and Dad both get half their genetic material from their parents (the grandsires and

granddams in this instance). If we try to test a calf to its grandsire, that calf usually shares about 25% of its DNA with that grandsire. Even then, we’re still missing half the DNA puzzle to match to that we would have testing to the actual sire. 5. DNA testing for twins should be done on hair cards. Because twins share blood while they are still in utero, this causes complications later on when trying to do a DNA test with blood or TSU samples. The samples come back inconclusive or contaminated more often via these methods, but are generally avoided by using a hair sample. 6. You can find a listing of tested homozygous polled animals in Digital Beef, as well as the other genetic conditions. If you go down the Digital Beef page on the left-hand side (the gray bar) below the menu with the red and green buttons, you will find a link that says “Genetic Conditions”. Clicking that will take you to a page with tabs for each of the genetic conditions that ASA tests for. Results of animals tested can be found by clicking on those tabs. The lists are available for males or females, so make sure you’re looking at the right list if you can’t find the bull you were looking for on the female list! Why are Annual WHR Assessments a Requirement for WHR Breeders? It’s that time of year again. The leaves are starting to change, there is a chill in the air, and WHR assessments should be on everyone’s to-do list! When November hits, I like to do a little refresher on how to get these done- and if you’re a firsttimer, welcome! Assessments are easy to complete and make registrations and transfers throughout the year a breeze. Before we get into the how-to, let’s go over the “why”. Assessments are a requirement of any WHR breeder to complete to register a calf in the current year. Assessments are only done on the females in the herd- not the males. Basically, it is a tool to clean up your inventory. Whatever is left active gets paid for, and that payment covers the cost of that female’s calf from the year to be registered and transferred. There are a few things to remember when assessing: • Virgin heifers are exempt. You only need to pay for a female’s assessment for the year that she will be calving for the first time (and then every year after that, that she remains active). If you have virgin heifers on your list, give them a

code 51. • Any females listed in your herd that are not registered Shorthorn (or Shorthorn Plus) are exempt if they are not bred Shorthorn for the year. Examples of these cows would be foundation cows (FN), or any cows that have been enrolled from any other breed. You can give these cows a code 50 to hold them over until next year’s assessment. • Donor cows who are gone, but you still have eggs on. Give these females a code 52, as they are exempt as well. Now, the other side of that coin is if you have a donor that is still around. If she is still active and can have natural calves, leave her as active and pay her assessment. • Partnership cows only need to be paid for once. They will show up in all owners’ assessments until one party pays for her. • Assessed cows receive one free registration of her calf from the same calendar year as long as said calf is registered before it turns one year of age, and one free transfer of said calf as long as the transfer is completed within 60 days from the date of sale.

• ET calves will always result in a registration fee, but they are cheaper to register when the recipient dam is assessed. This means you have the option to put any commercial cows in as foundation cows and assess them like you would your Shorthorn females. Resulting ET calves cost $20 to register and also get a free transfer. (Note: these foundation cows can then be marked ‘exempt’ in following years’ assessments, as noted in the first bullet point) If you do not assess the recipient dam, the ET calf will cost $40 to register and $20 to transfer (when registered under 12 months of age, transferred within 60 days from date of sale). Doing Your WHR Assessment Online

Follow these instructions to complete your 2021 WHR Assessments through the Digital Beef site.

1) Go to shorthorn.org and select the Click Here To Login link - use your member number and password to log into the registry. 2) On the left menu click Herd Mgmt, followed by Inventory. 3) On this page click the Assessment Age tab in the upper middle area of the screen. 4) If the list is current and no changes need to be made, click Mark My Assessments as Complete in the upper right-hand corner. 5) If you need to dispose of any animals, click the dispose/exempt link to the right, choose a disposal code from the dropdown box, and click save. a. If you are keeping the animal in your herd, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t click the dispose/exempt link this will leave the animal active. b. Once you have gone through your list, click Mark My Assessments as Complete, which is located in the upper right-hand corner.

6) Do not leave this page. Once the assessment is complete you will be redirected to your General Profile Page where your balance due will be displayed. You will log into your account and go to your General Profile Information in order to change these preferences. Thankful Time of Year When I was younger, my parents always told me that as I got older, time would move faster. I didn’t believe them at the time but I do now. By the time you are reading this it will be November and it seems like yesterday we were navigating the start of COVID. Fall is my favorite season and November is one of my favorite parts. The major show season has just begun and we have chilly fall weather. Plus, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! All the delicious food and gathering with family makes it special. My brother, Koby, is a chef and makes the best turkey I have ever eaten. My mom, brother and I make our Thanksgiving dinner for our entire family. And it is one of the few times I get to be in Texas with my family. I am looking forward to this year even more than usual. Even though 2020 has been strange, there is so much to be thankful for this year. We had an amazing National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference

in Abilene, Texas. I am so grateful for everyone that contributed by donating, volunteering or participating. I have an incredible job that I truly love and look forward to each day. My husband, Seth and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary in September in Colorado for a short vacation. I am thankful for all the members of the ASA and AJSA, I enjoy talking to each of you. There are so many things to be thankful for and I could never list them all. One important item to appreciate is all the support we have received for the junior program. We have a great group of junior board members and AJSA members who are passionate about the Shorthorn breed. This year, we have started a new fundraising program, the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund, and we already have many breeders supporting this program. Many breeders have donated lots in their live and online sales to ‘pay it forward.’ Those breeders will become part of the Shorthorn Royal

Society for their contribution. We have sent out letters to our membership encouraging them to donate to the Foundation Heifer and become part of the Shorthorn Red, White and Roan Club. After this year, we will transition from Foundation Heifer donations to annual pledges. The junior members are the future of the breed and supporting them ensures that future. We are thankful for these junior members and their potential to be the breeders of tomorrow. Your commitment to the breed and the juniors help make it a success. Due to restrictions at the North American International Livestock Exposition, we are unable to host Deck the Stalls. We will host this fundraiser on CCI.Live during the Annual Meeting social on December 4 at the ASA office. Be sure to look for more information on this fall fundraiser. We will begin sharing auction items on social media soon! =

Upcoming Fundraiser Announcement!! Due to restrictions at NAILE, we have to postpone our Deck the Stalls Extravaganza. NAILE will not allow spectators this year so we would not be able to gather as we have in years past. The Foundation Heifer will be sold as Lot 1 during the Greenhorn Cattle Co. “Where Future Generations Make A Difference” sponsored sale on November 15. Investing in the Future The Shorthorn Youth Development Fund (SYDF) was established in 2020 to provide financial support that will sustain and expand excellent programming to develop Shorthorn youth as cattle producers and responsible, productive citizens. Since we started our new fundraising program many breeders have donated lots in their sales to become part of the Shorthorn Royal Society. On September 5, Cates Farms, Indiana, and Fred Ripberger, Illinois, sold CF NR Dream Lady 95 AV ET for $2,200 and donated 100% of the proceeds to the SYDF. The female was purchased by GJD Farms and Cattle, Jerry Duvelius of Ohio. Cates Farms also sold three semen lots with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the SYDF. The unit of CF Solution X ET was purchased by James Parnell, Alabama, for $900, the unit of Leveldale Boardwalk 530C was sold to Don Ferguson, Oklahoma, for $300, and the unit of CF S/F Ultimate Reward ET was purchased by GJD Farms and Cattle for $500. Cornerstone Farms hosted an online sale on September 8 and donated 100%

of three units of sexed semen on Hot Commodity. The semen was purchased for $900 by Wesemann Shorthorns of Indiana. On September 14, Smith Family Farms of Indiana hosted an online sale and donated 100% of three embryos to the SYDF. The Free K Kim Hot Commidity and CF V8 Mona Lisa Reward embyros sold for a total of $1,350 to Troy Stoutenborough. During the Tadmore Farms of Texas online sale on September 21, their donation of 100% of one unit of SULL Red Reward sold for $175 to Gary Filippo of Oklahoma. On September 22, Berg Shorthorns of Iowa donated 10 units of SULL Red Valley 5011 ET. The 100% donation sold for a total of $625 to Green Castle Shorthorns and Rosemary Thompson of Iowa. On September 26, Little Cedar Cattle Co., Michigan, hosted the Great Shorthorn Revival sale. They donated 50% of LCCC Amelia Rose 1607 ET and her calf. This pair was purchased for $2,875 by Capstone Shorthorns, Mike and Harriett Meade of Indiana.

Little Cedar Cattle Co. donated 100% of additional auction items to the SYDF. They sold a bear game table for $175, Little Cedar Bass and woodpecker on Birch Tree to Woodlawn Farms for a total of $525, turned wood bowl to Mary Ann McMahon for $250, and Birders basket for $100 to Narrow Brook Shorthorns. Paint Valley Farms, Ohio, donated 100 % of two lots in the online Ohio Shorthorn Breedersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association Fall Showcase Sale on September 27. The five units of Byland Flash sold to Debra Zaktansky, Pennsylvania, for a total of $750. The five units of Byland Soggy Bottom sold to Shawn Vachal, North Dakota, for a total of $950. On September 30, Shoufler Shorthorns, Indiana, sold 100% of two units of CF S/F Upperhand X ET to Tammy Nemeskal, Michigan, for $570. National Sire Test Yearling Weight Update The third installment of the ASA National Sire Test at the University of Illinois is winding down, and once again the cattle are performing well in the feedyard. Below is a performance update on these calves in this cycle of the trial through their yearling weight collection.

Walking down on those green shavings in Louisville or being on the hill in Denver – there’s nothing like it. Maybe it is raising the best cow herd you can by capitalizing on Shorthorn’s great traits like docility, the tenderness gene, or cutability. No matter what this drive is for you, the Shorthorn breed is the breed for you! For me, it’s the showing aspect and the great leadership opportunities that the AJSA provides. It all started when I was awarded the Red Coat award. I’ve always looked up to those juniors wearing the red jackets. Now, it’s my chance to be the role model and I take this position very seriously. Whether it’s in the show ring or

back in the barns, it’s our responsibility to show the younger generations the ropes. The Shorthorn breed has led me to create some of my closest friends and make some of my fondest memories. It is my drive to give the younger generations the same opportunities that I’ve had throughout my time as a member of the AJSA. Isn’t it great that we can be a part of a breed that welcomes everyone from the small family farm to the large rancher? Where we can follow our passion to better the breed. The “Babe” cow family started at Martindell’s in 2003 when we purchased a bred heifer from our good friends Dedmon Shorthorns in North Carolina. There has been 34 females registered so far that go back to that original “Babe”. This heifer has been a standout since day one and just continues to get better. Moderate framed, thick, and as fancy as they come. This young lady has an outstanding pedigree and excellent E.P.D’s. She can truly be a “Foundation” heifer.

National Board of Directors Enlists Several Changes Proposed By-Law Changes and 2020-21 National Queen The National Board of Directors for the National Lassie Association met on September 29, 2020 to discuss numerous topics that would need to be evaluated for the upcoming year, and presented at the National Lassie Annual Meeting, open to all members. In hopes of creating larger participation, the Board has decided to propose a By-Law change to the location of the National Queen Contest. If passed, Effective 2021, the National Queen Contest will be held at the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference. With this proposed change, current National Lassie Queen Desirae Logsdon has elected to stay on as queen until the 2021 contest. The following reads as the potential By-Law changes for the National Queen Contest Location.

No State Queen or queen contestant may wear her crown during the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen selection week held during the National Junior Shorthorn Show North American International Livestock Exposition.

The Board would also like to highlight several benefits of becoming National

In addition to the National and Alternate National titles, the queens are also competing for a scholarship provided by the National Board, as well as the Shorthorn Foundation. The National Queen receives a $1000 scholarship, as well as additional travel funds, as the Alternate National Queen receives $500 in scholarship with additional travel expenses. The women who decide to run for the National Lassie titles do not need to be current State queens, but they need to be endorsed by their state to be able to compete in the National contest. Due to constraints at the NAILE, the Board has decided to hold a virtual Annual Meeting. All members are invited to attend, this meeting will be covering National board elections, voting on ByLaw changes and more. News & Notes Farewells Donald Keith Johnson, longtime Johnson County farmer, passed away peacefully September 5, 2020 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at age 91. Donald was born on December 26, 1928 in Iowa City to Elmer and Ella (Moynihan) Johnson. He graduated from Cosgrove High School before attending the University of Iowa. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, being honorably discharged in 1952. On May 8, 1956, Donald married Darlene Kessler in

Iowa City. The couple lived near Cosgrove, where they farmed and raised their five children. The couple enjoyed 63 loving years together until Darlene passed away in 2019. Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, where he was also a lector. Active in the community, Don was a member of Extension Council, Catholic Order of Foresters, Iowa and American Shorthorn Breeders Association, American Legion, and was a Union Township Trustee. He also served as president on the Johnson County Fair Board, director for the Tiffin Fire Association and spent 10 years as a 4-H leader. He was most proud of raising the 1963 Iowa State Fair Grand Champion Steer.

He is survived by his children, Barbara Taylor (Harvey Diehl) of Iowa City, Kristine (Phillip) Austin of Champlin, Minnesota, Keith Johnson (Stienie Laubscher) oflowa City, Joan (Kevin) Vondracek of Fairfax, and Gary (Lisa) Johnson of Cosgrove; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Billy) Bergner, Rachel Austin, Corey Johnson, Kyle (Megan) Johnson, Moriah Johnson, Collin Vondracek and Courtney Vondracek, and one greatgranddaughter, Celine Bergner. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brothers, Earl and Patrick Johnson. His family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Pleasantview Home for the love and care they provided Donald.

George Allen McLachlan, Jr , of Evart, MI died on October 3, 2020 in Big Rapids, MI. George was born at the family farmstead on Pogy Lake in Chippewa Township on June 27 in 1929 to George Alexander and Agnes Anna (Bush) McLachlan. George attended the Johnson Country School and graduated from Evart High School. He also attended Michigan State University where he received his “short course” certificate in Animal Husbandry. A search for a Shorthorn heifer to add to the herd brought George his loving wife Gloria Gail Cregg and they were wed on December 18, 1965. George and Gail have four children: Jennifer (Charles) Skotynsky of Barryton, Carla (Jeff ) Geeseman of Evart, Sue (Donna Rohrs) McLachlan of Hersey and Craig (Holly) McLachlan of Big Rapids. George found great pride in his four grand children Joe (Angela) Taibl, Hunter and MacKenna Geeseman and Ryker McLachlan. George spent his life as a stockman and farmer. He farmed at the family homestead

during his younger years, raising cash crop potatoes and forage crops. He bred and developed an elite herd of Shorthorn Cattle. These cattle were exhibited at regional and national events for many years. George used skill in merchandising these cattle successfully throughout the U.S. and Canada. George was a longtime member of the American Shorthorn Association and he and Gail were recognized as Builders of the Breed, by the ASA. Additionally, George severed in a multitude of leadership roles in the Michigan Shorthorn Breeders Association serving as secretary, treasure, and president. George loved to share his livestock knowledge and was a generous 4-H leader for over 30 years. Teaching young people about selection, nutrition and development of their livestock projects was a favorite endeavor. He judged hundreds of County and State livestock shows over the years. George also worked at Dean’s Liberty Dairy in Evart and in the late 1970’s was presented with an opportunity to manage the care of the commercial and purebred Simmental beef cattle herd at the Michigan State University, Agriculture Biological Research Center in Lake City, MI. George worked on research projects under the guidance of MSU great’s like Dr. Harlan Ritchie and Dr. Ron Nelson. George set

up the first rotational grazing system at the MSU center in the late 1990’s. After retiring from MSU in 1998, George and Gail returned to the family farm in Evart to work a large garden and tend a small herd of Shorthorn Cattle. George loved his family, good livestock, Tigers baseball and watching the Spartans play good ball. He had a firm handshake, an easy smile and a warm hug for his friends and family. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren excel in whatever endeavor in which they chose to participate. George is remembered fondly for his generosity, knowledge as a stockman, easy way and his love for family. George was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James and a sister Lila. He is survived by a sister Marilyn Meads of Big Rapids, his very close cousin Jake Ludy of Evart, his children and grandchildren and the love of his life Gail. =
