I
just returned from the World Shorthorn Conference in Australia, sharing thoughts and ideas as well as meeting with other breeders and association staff from different countries. The common passion for the Shorthorn breed around the globe was remarkable. The Australian Shorthorn Society is a member of the IGS Genetic Evaluation performance data bank; united with the USA and Canada with all our Shorthorn data in the same basket for comparison. I was asked to make a presentation on Breed Collaboration to the conference attendees. This collaboration is the key to a global data bank of Shorthorn genetics to compare around the world. I would like to share some stats that I was given by the folks at IGS regarding the advantages of including more Shorthorn global data in the IGS Genetic Evaluation. First, there are currently 1,680,385 Shorthorn records in the data bank from three countries: Canada has 143,788 head, Australia has 562,923 head and the ASA in the US has 973,674 head presently in the data bank. There are 419 common Shorthorn records from all three counties; which account for 101,280 progeny from those 419 common records. This provides a high degree of cross-comparisons that increases the accuracy of our genetic evaluation. I promoted the collaboration for all Shorthorn associations globally to become part of one broad data bank which would make all Shorthorn
performance records comparable and significantly augment the accuracy of cross-country comparisons, giving our breed more strength against other breeds in our performance data. A breed that may be smaller in numbers in its own country, automatically becomes a powerhouse globally. A representative from each country reported on the activity in their respective country. Agriculture was struggling in most cases around the world - reasons were different, but the hardships were there for everyone. In Australia, we witnessed a severe drought like I have never seen, the UK is dealing with Brexit and the list goes on and on. Shared problems include the continued acceptance of beef globally, new meat replacement products, bovine being criticized for global warming and the animal activist groups are concerns worldwide. There are more similarities for Shorthorn breeders regardless of where they are from than we may think. Collaborating as a bigger group will not only give our performance data power, it will give us strength in winning other battles ahead for our product. These are genuine issues and we must all work together to send a positive message. The Australian government sponsors a group that does research into market share of beef around the world. Their research has determined that only household incomes of $75,000 US dollars or more are targeted. This is
up almost double from a few years ago when they did the same research. Their data suggests this income equivalence is required for families to afford quality beef and proves our product must be superior in quality and taste to keep the consumer purchasing beef. How does this translate to what we do on a daily basis? I believe it means we need more genomics and carcass data to ensure our future and the need to have more animals ultra-sounded; it is imperative to produce a higher quality product. Our future depends on it. I strongly urge you to make plans to attend the next World Shorthorn Conference in the UK in 2022. This will represent 200 years of celebrating the Coates Herd Book for the Shorthorn Breed. The ASA will also be celebrating our 150 years of the American Shorthorn Association in 2022, the oldest beef breed registry in the USA. As a reminder to everyone, our Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet is this month, Nov. 22 & 23 in Kansas City. By the time you receive this issue of the Shorthorn Country, registrations will have closed. If you have not registered and can make it, don’t shy away! Please contact the office and we will try to get you included. We have an exciting program scheduled and the Shorthorn fellowship is the best part. Sharing ideas and the passion for our breed is the most important activity we have as our breed continues to grow! =

Whole Herd Reporting Facts and Tips The end of October through the month of November is as jam-packed a time-frame as you will find on the Shorthorn calendar. The American Royal, North American, ASA Annual Meeting, and several Shorthorn sales all occur in a 5 week window this fall; and of course there is always Thanksgiving on the November agenda. With plenty of events across the country still to attend, I hope to see many of you somewhere on the road between now and the end of the year. It’s certainly hard to think about next year right now, but if you are able to plan ahead, it could be beneficial to you when it comes time to register your 2020 calf crop with the ASA Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) program. Some of the most common questions that we get in the office on an almost daily basis relate to the WHR program. With WHR inventories being mailed out soon, I will take the opportunity to highlight the WHR process and timeline. Your 2020 WHR inventories will be mailed the first of November. The WHR inventory is where you will account for all active breeding females in your herd and remove any cows that have left your place over the past year. There are two ways to complete your WHR for 2020. You can fill out the paper form you receive and mail it back to ASA with payment, or you can log in to your Digital Beef account and do your
assessments there; as well as settle your balance by credit card while on Digital Beef. It is important when removing cows from your inventory to use as accurate of a disposal code as possible. Check the list of disposal codes when updating your inventory to indicate the reason for her removal from the herd (Death, sold for old age, fertility issues, etc.). The disposal codes will be printed with your inventory or available as the drop down menu from the “Dispose/ Exempt” button if you choose to do your assessments on the computer. Yearling heifers that are not going to calve in 2020 do not have to be included on the WHR assessment inventory. To exempt those heifers from your inventory, use the code number 51 “Active-WHR Exempt, Shorthorn heifer held from breeding”. Doing it this way will keep those heifers active so you can do a WHR assessment on them when they have that first calf in 2021. If there is a heifer listed on your inventory that has been culled and will not calve in your herd in 2021, use the proper disposal code to permanently remove her from your account. The fee for a WHR assessment on a breeding female is $20. If you get your assessments completed before January 10, a $4 per head discount is applied, making the assessment fee $16 per breeding female. From January 10 to March 1, the $20 per head rate applies.
After March 1 through the remainder of the 2020 calendar year, the WHR assessment fee is $25 per breeding female. When you do your WHR assessments for your herd, that fee gives you some value on each of your breeding females. The registration of her calf is included in that WHR assessment fee, as well as covering the first transfer of that calf after you sell it. The WHR assessment only covers the first transfer of the calf, and any future transfers of that animal will be charged to the seller. While it’s not the typical holiday season activity, getting your WHR assessments done before the early January cutoff is worth the time to complete it in exchange for your peace of mind and break on your wallet when it comes time to start registering calves. Being up to date on WHR will bring one less headache to the calf registration process. The monetary savings of getting ahead of the curve on completing the WHR for 2020 are also noteworthy. Even in the tough economic times we are facing in production agriculture, we still have plenty of blessings from the Lord above. November Already? Time Flies! Wow! How is it already November? It seems like just yesterday we were in Tennessee for the National Junior Shorthorn Show and now we are already into fall show season! Time does fly when you have fun – and when you stay busy! There has been a lot happen since June. As mentioned before, the junior board met to start the planning of the 2020 NJSS in Texas. There are some new items that will be being publicized over social media and in the Insider e-newsletter; so be sure watch for those announcements! As we begin fall fundraisers, we contacted breeders for Foundation Heifer donations in preparation for the Leading a Legacy Fundraiser that was held on October 12 in Dunlap. We had
a successful fundraiser and are grateful for all our donors and buyers for their support. The NJSS is a large event and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our breeders! Be sure to check the December issue for a complete list of donors and buyers, plus pictures of the fundraiser. If you plan to attend the North American International Livestock Exposition, be sure to swing by the ASA booth during the week to catch previews of our new apparel worn by staff. This apparel can now be ordered at shorthorn. org under the member services tab and ASA apparel. There are options for everyone. During NAILE, we also hold our Deck the Stalls junior fundraiser on November 16. We will have some
awesome items for live auction and raffle – just for a hint, we have a guitar signed by Confederate Railroad from NJSS this year. You won’t want to miss all that we have to offer! Another event that happened in between NJSS planning and fundraising was my wedding on September 28, 2019. Seth and I had a beautiful day in Oklahoma to say “I do.” We celebrated with many friends and family and I am excited to now be Shelby Diehm, which may get some time to get used to saying! I look forward to seeing everyone soon at upcoming shows and the ASA Annual Meeting. =
= Junior Corner The Extra Mile Contrary to the title, almost all of us will have hundreds of miles to drive as Fall show season is rapidly approaching. The American Royal is over, the North American is coming quick and Denver will be on the horizon soon enough. With that being said, this is the time to keep working hard day in and day out, or “go the extra mile.” We are a part of an industry that, whether we realize it or not, goes the extra mile. If someone needs an extra showman, we help each other get one. If someone needs a can of paint, we let each other borrow one. If someone needs help with their truck or trailer, we help each other fix it. This has become staple in this family that we are all blessed to have chosen to be a part of it. Though, as shows come and go, and we travel from one junior national to the next, that is one thing that always finds a

way to ring true. We go the extra mile. For all you young exhibitors, no matter if this is your first show or 20th show. Continue to go out to the barn and go the extra mile. Work hard on showmanship with your heifer, make sure to rinse and work hair every day. By pushing yourself to go the extra mile that may be the difference between first and second place at the end of the day. Since show season is so close now is not the time to coast and let off the gas. Instead, now is the time buckle down and work even harder, taking no days off. “One of the most important principles of success is developing the habit of working hard, and going the extra mile.” – Napoleon Hill. I would like to challenge all of you whether it is today, tomorrow, or at the next show to go the extra mile and keep working hard.

RC Show Cattle once again with guest consignor hosted a fantastic event on a beautiful August evening. With the pens packed with lookers they crowded into the tent to bid on their favorite animal both in person and on the phone. The bidding was at a very fast pace for the great group of heifers and steers assembled. Congrats goes out to everyone involved for this event. Events like this make the cattle industry continue. $11,000- Top selling lot was KSD CSF Dynamic Charm 119 ET. This January heifer sired by Free K-Kim Hot Commodity and out the ever famous
Lucky Charm cow family. The Lucky Charms have long been known for their show ring presence and cow making ability and this roan, polled, heifer will be no different with her power and rib structure. Mary Henry Auburn, Ind., was the lucky bidder on this heifer raised by KSD Farms and Corner Stone Farms. $6,600- Top selling ShorthornPlus/ Maintainer was lot 16. RC Drivin Alicia. This extremely fancy April, blue roan, female had a lot of friends on sell day. She was sired by Drivin 80 and out of RC Alicia’s Proud Blue. Brian Binkley Newark, Ohio, won the bid after very active excited bidding. RC Show Cattle, Eaton, Ohio was the consignor. $5,700- Top selling Steer was lot 32. This major contending steer was powerful throughout his structure. He was sired by Damn Proud and out of KSD Athenas Belle 611. Kolten Greenhorn Waynesburg, Ohio, jumped in to buy this stud and has already
claimed championships with him. KSD Farm was the breeder of this calf. $4,800- Lot 4 the full sister to the top selling female was next in line. This fancy February was sired by Hot Commodity and out of CF Lucky Charm 060 BSX ET. KSD Farm and Cornerstone Farm bred these two excellent females with Dylan Collett Liberty, Ind., winning the bid. Dylan will be at the top of his class and division with this championship caliber female. $4,750- Second top selling steer was lot 31. This powerful roan beast was sired by Damn Proud and out of CF Cumberland 186. This heavy muscled sound moving steer will see his fair share of championships before his campaign is done. On a brisk but beautiful sunny day in Ontario Canada. Hill Haven Shorthorns along with their guest consigners put on a fantastic Shorthorn Sale. It was a very active crowd socializing before the sale, looking at the cattle in the lots and while the auction was going on. Interest in these progressive firm livestock was also good on the phones and internet. These firms dug deep into their herd to bring the best both phenotypically and genotypically. $28,500-Top selling lot was Lot 1A, 1B, and 1C Choice lot. After much discussion both in the pens and at the sale ring Jody Hawkins, Glenavon Sask. Selected Lot 1C for 21,000 this stout, fancy made, roan, March 2019 heifer was sired by Little Cedar Aviator 503x and out of Hill Haven Breathtaker 35Y. 56
Jody then selected 1a for 7,500. This roan, powerfully made, February 2019 heifer was also and Aviator but out of Hill Haven Breathless which is the mother of Breathtaker. Lot 1B will stay at Hill Haven and join their impressive female battery. $24,500-2nd top selling lot was another choice Lot 14A and 14B. Wow! What a set of full sisters and what a decision. 14B which was my choice of the sale was a powerful, red, January 2018 female sired by Hill Haven Firestorm 28C and out of S/F Lily 394 HC and bred to Hill Haven Bullitt 25B for a Jan 2020 calf. Samantha Lundy, Collingwood, Ont., was the winning bidder at 17,000 and I am sure we will see future progeny from her. Congrats. Lot 14A which was a full sister to lot 14B was a roan, polled, January 2019 heifer. This stout made, thick deep bodied calf was selected by George Brown Nottawa, Ont for 7,500. This heifer has all the making to turn out just like her full sister. $12,500-the next in line is Lot 11. Hill Haven Pretty Rose is an ultra complete, dark roan, January 2019 female sired by the ever popular Hill Haven Firestorm 28C and out of SULL Pretty Woman 2302. = News & Notes Farewell Dale L. Wernicke 75, of Lena passed away on Friday September 13, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisc. He was born on February 23, 1944 to Louis and Marie (Breed) Wernicke in Freeport, Ill. He married Anita Rood in Monroe, Wisc., in 1970. He graduated from Lena-Winslow High School in 1962. He was a 3rd generation farmer and raised purebred Shorthorn cattle and exhibited all over North America. Dale loved the cattle business in all aspects. He was a member of the American Shorthorn Association and served on the board of directors. He was a past Builder of the Breed award recipient in 1986 and received numerous National and State awards showing his cattle. He is leaving his legacy to his 4th generation son Ryan. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren show cattle and pigs. He is survived by his son Ryan (Mary) Wernicke of Lena, grandchildren; Laci, Ty and Isabella, Siblings-Alan Wernicke of NY and Lynda (Reggie) Greeley of Colo.,
and, numerous friends that he considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Anita in 2012. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.leamonfh.com. Andrew M. Humphreys, 68, of Wolcott, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Franciscan Health Hospital of Lafayette. He was born August 27, 1951 in Lafayette to the late John and Arlene (Ruemler) Humphreys. Andrew was a graduate of Wolcott High School and Valedictorian of his 1969 class. He attended Purdue University where he was a member of Farm House Fraternity. His marriage was to Jacqui Misch on December 8, 1973 in Wolcott; she survives. Andrew was an Elder of Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church of Wolcott, Secretary and Treasurer of the Indiana Shorthorn Association, member of the National Shorthorn Association, Chairman of the White County 4-H Beef Barn for 30 years, on the Peoples Feed Mill
Board, and member of the White County Extension Board. Andrew loved being a self-employed farmer and cattleman, he also worked for Indiana Animal Health of Wolcott for 25 years. He thoroughly enjoyed showing cattle throughout the years and passed that hobby to his grandchildren. Andrew also enjoyed a good game of Euchre with friends. Surviving along with his wife is a son, Josh (Jane) Humphreys of Wolcott; grandchildren, John, Jaylynn, and Sophia Humphreys. Sisters, Sandra Hipsher of Tennessee and Susan (Mark) Stevenson of Franklin, IN. Mother and father-in-law, Bill and Mary Misch of Wolcott; sisterin-law, Pam (Don) Nesbitt of West Lafayette; brothers-in-law, Bill (Fran) Misch of Lafayette and Jeff (Marleta) Misch of Brookston. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and long-time friend, Tom (Candy) Byers of Wolcott. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Andrew’s name to the National Shorthorn Association, White County 4-H Beef, or the Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church.
Dale Hart Honored at Amarillo Shorthorn Show By Mary Bass, Texas State Publicity Officer The 2019 South Central Regional Shorthorn Show held September 15 at the Tri State Fair, Amarillo, Texas was dedicated to Dale Hart, Hartsdale Polled Shorthorns, Friona, Texas. The South Central Region of the American Shorthorn Association includes Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Louisiana. Hartsdale Polled Shorthorns started in 1948 with the purchase of one polled Shorthorn heifer for an FFA project Hart’s freshman year in high school. 90% of the present cowherd of 60 mother cows are descendent’s of this heifer. For many years the herd was maintained at 100 mothers. A severe drought between 2010 and 2013 forced the sale of 60% of the cowherd in 2013. All heifers have been kept since that time for rebuilding the herd. Cattle have been purchased at the Texas Shorthorn Association sale and the Fortune 500 Sale in Oklahoma in recent years. A Grade A dairy was run until 1958. Since that time the herd has been maintained as a cow/calf operation. In the early 1970’s, the American Shorthorn Associa58
tion opened its Herd Book to accept Dual Purpose Shorthorns, who traced back to the herd book in the 1940’s. Hartsdale Polled Shorthorns contained these cows and thus the cows could be registered in the American Shorthorn Association as well as the American Milking Shorthorn Society. In the late 70’s and early 1980’s Hart consigned cattle to the 5-State Shorthorn Sale in Guymon, Oklahoma. The firm continued to exhibit cattle on the county, state and national level in Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and occasionally Arizona. In 2005 and 2006 Hart exhibited the Grand Champion bulls at the National Dual Purpose Shorthorn Show in Hutchinson, Kansas on Hartsdale Texas Chess and Hartsdale Texas Big Red. He also exhibited the Reserve Champion Female at the 2005 show. Some of the herd bulls used in the past include Willbro Harvester, Ridgeview MM Chief P, QCC Impressive Jax P, Kahoa’s,Wabash Harvey P and Cherry Plus Chess. Hart has also done some line breeding with home bred bulls with good

success. Hart is a rural mail carrier. He has been a member of the Friona Baptist Church for 75 years and was a 4-H leader for over 20 years. He and his wife Laura have 4 children - Xarene Bass of Canyon, Holly Campbell of Friona, Evelyn Romero of Canyon and Jeremy Hart of Friona and 10 grandchildren. =
