Non-Certificate Bulls To make a bull non-certificate, ALL DNA requirements for an A.I. Sire must be completed before we will make them non-certificate.

A.I. Certificate Bulls As of January 1, 2017, any bull releasing its first A.I certificate, will not be able to until ALL DNA is completed.

Transferring Bred Females Bred females being transferred must have all the breeding information including name and registration number of sire(s), type of service, date of service and/or pasture exposure dates.

Contemporary Groups

If you enter your calf crop into the registry in several different sessions, you must indicate which contemporary group each calf belongs to. To do this, use management codes (the “Mgmt” box) and the “Season” drop down menu when submitting calves to the registry. All calves in a contemporary group must have the same management code and same season submitted in order to be properly grouped together. If these are not used, the registry will group calves by the day they are submitted.

WHR Breeders 1. WHR Breeders cannot register any calves until their cow herd inventory assessment is completed and paid in full for that calendar year. 2. To take advantage of the free registration benefit of being a WHR Breeder, you must register your natural calf before it turns one (1) year of age.

Last year, ASA and the University of Illinois embarked on a new journey together with the creation of a Shorthorn sire test. This partnership gives ASA and its members a great opportunity to showcase the capabilities of Shorthorn genetics in a commercial setting. By the time this issue hits your mailbox, the first calves from the inaugural sire test will be on the ground! The test began when 300 Angus-based commercial cows in the U of I commercial cow herd were bred to one of 15 Shorthorn bulls that were nominated by breeders and then selected based on EPD criteria developed by ASA staff. The data collected in this sire test is one of the most indepth sets of information compiled on Shorthorn-sired cattle. Data points measured include calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, feed intake and conversion, carcass data, genomic data and more. We’re excited to announce that ASA and the U of I are teaming up again for the 2nd annual Shorthorn Sire Test. Once again, the University of Illinois has made available 300 Angus-based commercial cows to be artificially bred to Shorthorn sires. Again this year, sires will

be selected and comprehensive data will be collected from conception to carcass. Opportunities are available to all breeders to nominate bulls to the ASA/U of I Sire Test. Nominations will be submitted to ASA and reviewed by staff. If a bull is selected, the nominating party will then provide 20 straws of semen to U of I for breeding. To cover the expenses associated with labor and data collection over the 2 year span of the test (from breeding to harvest), the University of Illinois charges $125/cow to participate in the program. In order to breed 20 cows to your herd sire, it will cost $2,500. There are several benefits to enrolling your herd sire in the U of I Sire Test. Obviously, the data collected on your herd sire will be advantageous. The ability to generate data in large, multisire contemporary groups is something that many breeders don’t have the herd size to accomplish. The multi-sire comparisons within the test build strong links of comparison within the data set. Participating in the sire test is one way to gather carcass data on your sire’s progeny without the risk of retained ownership. If you have a young herd sire, this is a

chance to gather more data on him outside of your own herd. Participating in the sire test allows you to identify areas of strength for your herd sire’s progeny, while helping you also recognize potential areas of improvement in your breeding program. Participating in the Sire Test will result in publicity for your program and your sire. Selected bulls will be featured in the Shorthorn Country and ASA Insider e-news. Articles and information will be published with data from the trial, showcasing sire group performance. If you’ve been looking for a unique way to get your bull noticed in the Shorthorn industry, the ASA/U of I Sire Test is a great option. Nomination forms are available on the ASA website under the “Forms” tab, or you can contact me (matt@ shorthorn.org ; 731-694-6469) for more information. The deadline for sire nominations is October 25, and all semen on selected sires will need to be shipped to U of I by November 15. = Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs

he fall sale season is in full swing as October rolls in. The election for State delegates to the annual meeting was completed in September. Those elected are being contacted by Emily from the ASA office to confirm their intent to serve in this capacity. The goal is to have 100% representation of every member at this event. If you are contacted please reply to Emily at your earliest convenience so we can have a final list to publicize in next month’s issue of the Shorthorn Country. This year’s annual meeting is being designed as a full-fledged exciting event. Please review the program to the left and see more details on page 61. This program is packed full of meaningful assistance for you, the members of ASA. Remember to make reservations on the ASA website before the space is filled up. Beginning Friday afternoon there will be 4 separate 45-minute breakout sessions you can choose from. These sessions will cover proper methods for turning in performance plus understanding performance records. Also there will be a time slot for understanding registration policies and using the system online. This will explain the DNA policies and how samples should be submitted. We scheduled a session on sharing the available opportunities at ASA for assistance in marketing your animals. The suggestion to develop an ambassador program was mentioned at last year’s event, so there will be a session on how to become a Shorthorn Ambassador in your state. The final 45-minute rotation will consist of ASA Committee Meetings. The ASA Board will be attending to gather ideas from membership to develop in the future. The day will conclude with a social including light hors d’oeuvres and great Shorthorn fellowship. Saturday morning the forum begins with 3 fantastic topics. The scheduled speakers will make this especially interesting. After the morning break there will be a panel discussion with representatives from MARC, a family ranching enterprise that researches association performance plus an experienced cattle manager who is also running a feedlot and packing plant. The panel will be moderated by Bryce Schumann. Following the panel discussion, Bryce will tie everything together with a presentation themed “Making Shorthorns Great Again”. After lunch will be the main feature of the event, The Annual Meeting, where the Board Directors will be elected and association reports given. Later in the early evening there will be a social and then the fun and exciting Awards Banquet, at which all our performance and show awards will be presented, including Century Club and Membership Awards. The coveted Builder of the Breed will also be announced. This event is a must attend for all ASA breeders and members. The Shorthorn Fellowship may be one of the most important parts of this activity; it is a great time to share ideas and information with fellow Shorthorn enthusiasts. Make your reservations early by going to the ASA website on the home page under “Quick Links” and click on Annual Meeting Registration. Also mark on your calendar to watch The American Rancher on RFD-TV, November 20. This will be the first in a series of Shorthorn shows featured on the American Rancher. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Kansas City on Dec. 1st & 2nd at “Making Shorthorns Great Again”. =

= Beef Business

Let’s Grow the Yard Show One of the neatest places in the entire beef industry is in The Yards during the National Western Stock Show. Being in The Yards is a historic link to all the great cattle and stockmen who have occupied those pens in the past, as well as all the outstanding animals and stockmen who continue to carry on the tradition. For several years, The Shorthorn Pen Show has been the 4th largest breed exhibition in The Yards. However, there’s always room for more participation, as it’s a long climb to the top 3. If you want to display your top Shorthorn or ShorthornPlus cattle, there are Pen of 3 classes for bulls and heifers as well Pen of 5 bull classes. A new addition to the 2018 NWSS Yard Show is the option to

16

show one bull and/or heifer from your pen in the National Open Show on The Hill. Exhibitors can ENTER multiple pen animals in the open show, but only one bull and/or heifer may be chosen from your entries to exhibit on The Hill. Entry deadline is November 20 for the Denver Pen Show, so don’t let time pass you by! The marketing opportunities that come with being in The Yards are tremendous. The history and popularity of the National Western brings cattlemen from all over the world to experience the event. If you have a bull or female sale, it’s a great time to display your offering before auction. It’s a chance to unleash your competitive side while still sticking

to your roots of marketing breeding stock. While everyone wants to bring home a banner, showing in The Yards is a fun atmosphere and a chance to learn more about your fellow breeders’ programs. I’d love to see the Shorthorn Pen Show at the National Western grow, and that starts with 2018. With commitment from breeders, we can show all the cowboys in Denver that Shorthorn cattle are ready to play a big role in the commercial cattle business. If you have any questions about making the trip to The Yards, please do not hesitate to contact me. =

GeneSeek Breed Forum Last month, Matt Woolfolk and I traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska for

GeneSeek’s annual breed council forum. Here, we were fortunate enough to meet

Heather customer service, Lange registrations, DNA

with the other breeds who use GeneSeek and share with each other the “methods to our madness” for submitting and requesting DNA. We were introduced to the GeneSeek staff and I was especially thrilled to meet Rebecca Kephart, who I work with on a daily basis. She is my go-to person at GeneSeek and is a huge help in getting the results broken down and back to us in a timely manner. We learned new ways of working with the LIMS (Lab Information Management System) site as well as some new and upcoming offerings from GeneSeek (release TBD). Stewart Bauck was a gracious host as well as keynote speaker. He went indepth with parentage innovations, which we can all look forward to in the future as well. Another person of note who I met for the first time was Gary Felger, who is our territory sales manager and an absolute riot. He presented to the breeds about growing your commercial heifer business and touched on important points to grow more breed loyalty. GeneSeek was kind enough to send us a batch of their new GGP (GeneSeek Genomic Profiler) portfolios, so if you are interested, just contact the office. I appreciated the opportunity to have experienced this forum and collected knowledge to bring back to the ASA. I look forward to learning more about the world of DNA and meeting the people involved throughout the breeds. =

= Junior Corner Fall Fundraising As Fall has approached us, we are going to sales to mingle with friends and family, and meet new Shorthorn family traveling the country side. I hope everyone is enjoying their time as the AJSA Junior Board is traveling to the different sales. The next sale we will be attending is the Maternal Legends sale, in Dunlap, Iowa, where on that Saturday night, October 14, is the major fundraising event for the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference. The junior board auctions off many items such as photography packag-

es, semen or embryo packages, and more. Our major lot of the night is the foundation heifer which is donated by WHR, Bill and Becky Rasor, this year. All of the proceeds from the auction that Saturday night help make the junior national we have each year possible. Without the help and assistance from sponsors and donors these events would not be made possible. The junior board hopes to see everyone in Louisville at N.A.I.L.E. and wishes safe travels to everyone this fall.

A.I. safe to Muridale Jaxson. Due 3-2-2018. Certainly a sale feature female from the heart of the Leveldale herd. She is without question, one of the most powerful and massive Taylor Made daughters to date! She is not only very impressive phenotypically, but also has a curve bender calving ease and growth genotype. She produced the high selling heifer calf in last year’s Investment Sale. She sells safe to Jaxson, who has worked extremely well in limited numbers for us. He sired our syndicated, featured herd sire Reload, as well as one of our most powerful replacement females. I think this female is a home run Investment!

LOTS 27-36

We are very proud to present you this set of show heifer prospects. We had a very successful AI program in 2016. Using the top bulls in the breed. The result is an outstanding set of calves. Study the pedigree and you will find that they are from cows that will produce show heifers. But, maybe more important they are bred to make profitable foundation females. They will be top producers in your cow herd for many years. All are Land of Lincoln eligible with the exception of 3 lots...33, 34 & 35.

Dear Shorthorn Enthusiasts,

Practical Ideas. Practical Cattle.

It is that time of year again where we get ready for the Leveldale INVESTMENT Sale and we could not be more thrilled with the cattle we plan to make available to you. We proudly offer these females as we delve into the next generation of Shorthorns at BSG. After dispersing the cows 4-years and older mature cows last December, our remaining females are young and offer the most cutting-edge, maternal genetics with an extra punch of power from the finest genetics we can source. Folks have come to expect our very best from our bred heifer offering, and we are happy to compare them to any offering you will find. Many sell bred to Saskvalley Banjo 268B, a stunning son of Ultra 12J who’s service was a sale feature at the Great Shorthorn Revival. Also in our offering you will find two Power Cows from the heart of the mature cow herd whom were not in the dispersal as they were owned with a long-time friend whom many of you have met in our travels. The substance and genetic merit in these cows impress all that have seen them this summer. Their service sire has been used at BSG for a couple years, and was hand selected this summer to run in a commercial herd of several thousand cows. Thank you for your interest in BSG. We look forward to seeing you at the sale. Stop by or call anytime. Sincerely, J. Phillip Bowman & Family

I would say that this this the most massive Colonel Gus daughter we have made; she has so much rib and mass in her lower 1/3. We vision this to be the type of female people will point out as when they do pasture tours at her new home. It took a lot of arm twisting to get Phil to part with this natural daughter of the great Saskvalley Maggie 73R. 73R as many know, is the model Shorthorn cow found on your membership card and other ASA promotional items. The Maggie family isn’t just known for their stellar eye appeal, power or outcross pedigree but also their ability to inject genes of economic value and maintenance free merit in all of their progeny. This is likely the best Colonel Gus female out there for total balanced performance and genetic prediction. Folks, this a donor cow in the making, no doubt. Her future calf by the latest Select Sires feature Shorthorn, Goldenrod, is destined for greatness and curve bending power traits.

Thank you once again for including Peak View Ranch in the Leveldale Investment Sale 2017. Shorthorn cattle have never been better and offered more to such a wide cross section of the cattle industry. Shorthorn cattle have so much to offer owners. Shorthorn cow herds can thrive in diverse and some very harsh environments. They have carcass quality that is truly an asset. They are a docile breed that is easy and enjoyable to handle. They can cross in a number of ways to yield success. While our children have been in 4-H it has been enjoyable to take a very functional and sound set of cows and cross them to club genetics and see in one generation that a shorthorn cow can produce fair champions. Then these same cows go back to producing performance oriented cattle for the commercial industry that are profitable and practical. This would not be true for many breeds. Val raised the reserve champion steer this year from a two year old purebred Shorthorn. This steer also won the carcass contest with a yield grade 2 prime carcass. Gabri was reserve champion previously with a purebred Shorthorn steer. Gabri also won multiple breeding championships against all breeds with Shorthorn heifers. Showing against other breeds in a competitive arena and winning is great promotion for the Shorthorn breed. Peak View Ranch has cattle that serve my passion of being productive, functional, profitable cattle in a commercial environment. You will see consignments filling both needs in the sale. The show heifers are halter broke, gentle and ready for a youth to show and enjoy. The fall calvers represent some of our best and most productive performance cattle. Like always, for us they have to be able to cross over and succeed where ever they go and are asked to perform. The Leone Family All Heifer calves have received: Official brucellosis vaccination Enforce Three intranasal vaccine Bovishield 5 One Shot pasturella vaccine Ultrabac 7 Dectomax injectable

Fall calvers have received: Staybred Vibriolepto vaccine Dectomax pour on Bovishield 5FP VL5

As far as I am aware this is the first Sull Red Value heifer to sell at public auction. She is not a disappointment. Her dam was a successful show heifer for Val and raised a Jessie James that was reserve champion at our very competitive county fair all breed and crossbred market steer show. The same steer had a prime yield grade 2 carcass. These are the cross over genetics that make Shorthorns fun. Peak View Kim is a heifer that will be very competitive for a youth down the road.

with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Best of the Buckeye provides Ohio seedstock breeders with an enhanced marketing opportunity for Ohio bred, born and registered steers and heifers, creates a source of more moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and attracts new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair. This year’s generous sponsors are Garwood Cattle Co., heifer division; Jones Show Cattle and R.D. Jones Excavating, steer division; and Ohio

CAT and Ohio Ag Equipment, scholarship division. $30,000 will be presented between the two shows in the form of premiums, scholarships and awards. Every winning Best of the Buckeye exhibitor received a basic premium of $300 for champion, $200 for reserve champion, and $100 for third overall. The Ohio Angus Association also contributed additional premiums. OCA would like to thank these sponsors for contributing to a successful year of the Best of the Buckeye program. The local winners of the Ohio State Fair event were as follows:
