WHR Breeders WHR Assessments for 2020 will be sent in November. If you do not receive yours, please contact the ASA office as soon as possible. 1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2019 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2019.) 2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) = Association Outlook 2019 Annual Meeting & Forum, Nov. 22 & 23

he Fall season is upon us. This is a busy time for Shorthorn Breeders - weaning calves, getting crops out/in, breaking calves for sales, going to the shows and possibly attending a few Shorthorn sales. Fall is one of the most demanding times of the year for those of us in agriculture that are farming and ranching. I hope you will find time to attend this year’s Annual Meeting and Forum Nov. 22 & 23 in Kansas City at the Hilton Airport Hotel. The schedule for this event is in the right-hand column. This year’s theme is Building a Positive Breed Image. We can all do our part to improve in this area. We are judged every time we are in front of a potential customer. Every breed is judged and assumptions for the entire breed result from each person’s actions and reactions. As united Shorthorn breeders, it is time to take care of each other and ultimately take care of ourselves. From standing behind our cattle with integrity to making positive comments about the breed; being positive sends a message of confidence and pride to the cattle industry. The program at the forum includes very successful livestock breeders from our breed and other breeds who will share their philosophies on this subject. They will share why they feel their breeds are successful and the practices they use daily to guarantee continued success. These are the pillars of our industry who have worked hard to build their own programs and reputation, and in turn build a breed’s reputation – such as Donnell Brown from RA Brown Ranches and Paul Hill from Champion Hill and our own Derek Jungels’ Shorthorn success story. We also have livestock professionals like Marty Lueck who managed a herd of purebred Herefords for private enterprise and then donated it to Missouri State University and Randy McCabe of a hard-working family that sells numerous bulls and females in a commercial setting. There is Virgil Husemen, a successful purebred operator and Jim Husz who, over 25 years, has developed commercial markets for two beef breeds at NW Missouri State University as well as developing his own personal herd. Ben Lohmann who procures AI sires for a stud along with Patrick Wall at ISU and Matt Woolfolk at ASA will also be included. This program is loaded with years of expertise and knowledge open for your questions and understanding the importance of that positive image for all. Focusing on Fall Weaning Even with most Shorthorn herds being spring calving, the fall season is still plenty busy on and off the farm. Friday and Saturday night lights glow across the country as football season will be in full swing by the time this hits mailboxes. Hopefully, you can catch your favorite team in action when you aren’t under pressure to finish farm chores. In addition to many of you being in the midst of harvest season, there are plenty of sales and shows to prepare for or attend. On top of all that, the spring calves at home need to be weaned! Weaning can be an exciting time, as you get to see if your breeding decisions from over a year ago worked like you planned, if you exceeded your goals, or if some matings just didn’t work out. With those spring calves getting ready to come to the weaning pen, there will be plenty of decisions for you to make. I’m sure there will be some Shorthorn family debates about which replacement heifers to keep, as well as which bull calves will be lucky enough to stay bulls. If you are already collecting weaning weights on your calves, you’ve made the choice to incorporate performance into your program and realize the benefits to having data at your disposal when making these decisions. Individual performance records don’t just tell you the story on a specific calf, but also add to the knowledge on sires and dams you’ve used in your program. You can use your eyes and evaluate this year’s calves to make culling decisions without performance records. However, is that single calf crop the best snapshot of the

= Intent to Run Members Announce Intent to Run for ASA Board of Directors John R. Russell DVM – My love of Shorthorns began in the 1960’s when my maternal grandmother encouraged me to consider the breed for an FFA project. Her family had initially crossed Shorthorns with their herd in order to bring docility and improve milking ability. As a ranching granddaughter, daughter and wife, she was very knowledgeable of the breeding programs for their ranch and was confident the Shorthorn would provide a great future. My first Shorthorn heifer was purchased from L. M. Haupt Shorthorns in College Station, Texas. That first purchase started the burning desire to raise my own Shorthorns. Throughout my high school years, I continued to show Shorthorns and was heavily immersed in the Shorthorn world when I worked for the Haupt Ranch during college. After graduating from Texas A&M University, School of Veterinary Medicine and opening a solo practice in Cypress, Texas, my passion for Shorthorns remained strong. I turned that passion into a reality by starting my own herd of Shorthorns and Maines in there early 1990’s. By using a variety of popular bulls of that era, studying genetics and outcomes for best breeding results, my operation continued to grow. When I built my ranch in 1998, I chose the name Tadmore Farms to honor my great-great grandfather’s homestead “Tadmor” which was established in 1846 in Matagorda, Texas. In 2001, my wife Barbara and I made the decision to phase out the Maines and focus exclusively on our Shorthorn herd genetics. We achieved this primarily by using WHR genetics with an occasional addition of V-8. In more recent years we have enhanced our herd by adding a variety of genetics through embryo transfer. We currently market primarily to Texas 4-H & FFA students, offering heifers and steers to show. Each cattle purchase also provides access to a team who assists in: Showmanship, Feeding program, Fitting for shows. The American Shorthorn Association 16

will benefit by having me on the National Board of Directors, as I vow to: Represent the state of Texas as well as all other southern states. Be a voice for the people in my region including neighboring southern states. Explain the views southern breeders have in order to improve the entire national association. Bring my vast experience with people, different breeders, all aspects of breeding cattle, and my extensive education to provide a more calculated approach to the improvement of the Shorthorn breed. Credentials: Member of the Texas Shorthorn Association fulfilling a BOD term; served as Vice President & President and am currently the Vice President for the 2nd time. ASA Ambassador for two years representing the American Shorthorn Association in local Texas Shorthorn shows and at different venues across Texas. Jerrell Crow Myself, Jerrell Crow, and Stephanie Crow are co-owners of Crow Creek Farms in Lawton, Oklahoma along with cousin Steven. Jerrell graduated from Elgin High School in 1987. While attending Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Oklahoma, I became a certified welder in 1988. In 1990, I married my wife, Stephanie. The start of my work career began by working in the cable telecommunications and fiber optic industry. I have obtained numerous national certifications in installation and safety and later founded K&M Satellite, Inc. This company completed large residential and commercial projects from St. Louis, Missouri to Reno Nevada. During this time, managing a fleet of employees located in Lawton and Oklahoma City was a task of mine. Following a recovery from an accident, I sold K&M Satellite, Inc. Currently, I sever as an E.M.R. for Rush Springs, Oklahoma Ambulance Service. In addition, I’m a Lieutenant and the Public Information Office

for Hulen, Oklahoma Volunteer Fire Department. Stephanie and I are active members in the Cache Creek Cowboy Church. Additionally, I serve as the President of the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association; serving in this post for the last six of the seven years. I have been a member of the OSA Board of Directors the last ten years. In 2017, I served as the Co-Chairman of the Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Tulsa, OK. Together, Stephanie and I served as the OSA advisors for seven years while our son Ethan was the OJSA President. During this time, OSA experienced tremendous growth and returned to national prominence. My wife and I have two children, Jobie Cash and Ethan Crow; and are the proud new grandparents of Kensi Cash, born in June of 2019. Jobie is a wonderful wife and mother and assists her husband in his work as herdsman at Londigan Farms in Granite, OK. Jobie was the AJSA Breeder of the Year in 2011. She and her husband show and raise Shorthorns and Angus Cattle. Our son, Ethan Crow, is a supervisor for an oil field equipment company. He serves as Herdsman for Crow Creek Farms. Ethan is the 2019 ASA Herdsman of the Year. Currently, Ethan is developing a herd of club calf cows. For several years, I have served as the Shorthorn Superintendent for the Tulsa State Fair. As well as servings as the Shorthorn Co-Superintendent of the Tulsa State Fair and the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Stephanie and I have raised and developed several National Champion Bulls. We have raised numerous bull and heifer Champions in the ASA South Central Region. Currently, Crow Creek Farms owns and exhibits the ASA Purebred Show Bull of the year. TJH Bo’s Maxim and the ASA ShorthornPlus Show Bull of the Year, CCF Nicholas. Together, we co-own and manage 125 purebred and plus cows on 800 acres in Southwest Oklahoma. Crow Creek Farms has a fall production sale and participates in the annual Oklahoma Sooner Sale and Show in Duncan, OK. I help co-manage the Future Sale and Show Back and Open Junior Show. Furthermore, I look forward to being able to serve on the ASA Board of Directors.

Lee Miller - I am from Millersburg, Ohio where my wife Dawn and I have four children and run a beef operation in the heart of Amish country. From the time I was old enough to carry a bucket and throw hay bales, I have been involved with livestock. Growing up, we had dairy cattle and fed out beef steers and hogs. While I am also involved in other business ventures today, time spent on the farm is always better than a day at the office. Little did I know that when we bought a few Shorthorn cows in 2005 that I would be bit with the “Shorthorn Bug”. Today, I truly believe that the maternal values our breed can offer the beef industry are unmatched. What started as a hobby has turned into a

business venture at Paint Valley Farms as our herd has grown to 150 Shorthorn and Shorthorn influenced cows. Come December we will host our fourth annual Maternal Event where we will offer 70 Shorthorn females along with our sale partner Byland Polled Shorthorns. In April we hosted our first annual bull sale along with Byland and successfully sold 45 Shorthorn bulls to 13 states. This past January, the Ohio Cattleman’s Association recognized us as the 2019 Ohio Seedstock Producer of the year. I have been fortunate to play a progressively more involved role in the Ohio Shorthorn Association where I served as President from 2016 to 2019. I am confident in taking my leadership skills and involvement in the Shorthorn breed to the next level. I have also served as a member of ASA’s Commercial Acceptance Committee and as the Chairman of our local beef committee,

which oversees the youth program at our county fair. For the past 20 years, I have been a partner with my father in the manufacturing and distribution of heavy equipment parts globally. We currently employ 60 people and have been in business 35 years. The experiences I have gained in leadership and staff management as well as market development with Paint Valley Equipment have been invaluable. Most of all I have made it a priority to create a positive and productive work environment for our staff. With the above-mentioned skills and experiences, I share with you my desire to be a part of the leadership team that moves this breed forward as a Director of the American Shorthorn Association.

Attention NAILE Exhibitors! New & Important NAILE Information Stalling Policy:

We will be following the NAILE stalling policy. NAILE uses our entries from the previous year to plan how much stalling we receive for our breed. They will take a percentage away from our previous year entries and then take a percentage away for estimated no shows of current entries. So, what does this mean for you? We get less stalls assigned for Shorthorns than what are entered. We advise that you enter more head then what you plan to bring, because we will cut down on your stall space from what you enter by the same percentage that we are cut by NAILE. If you have any stalling requests, we will take them, but we cannot promise that you will get them as we will be stalling where you fit best. Stalling requests need to be in by November 1st to Emily at emilyv@ shorthorn.org, in order for them to be taken into consideration. If you sent stalling requests in with your entries to NAILE, make sure to send to Emily as well; as we cannot guarantee we get those requests from NAILE! Also, please contact Emily as soon as you know if you are for sure coming or not coming to the show. Again, stall space will be determined solely off of number of head entered.

Example: IF North American was to take 30% away from us then we will take 30% off of what you entered. So if you enter 10 head you will get 7 stalls.

The North American has put out a press release for what is new in 2019. You can find it at the following link, https:// www.livestockexpo.org/images/Documents/ NewAtNAILE.pdf. Some important things we would like to point out are; • All animals must enter the grounds at Gates 4 or 6. Gate 4 will be open 24/7. • Health papers will be checked at the gates before you are allowed to enter the grounds. • All Beef Cattle will be required to have a USDA 840 EID Tag. • All cattle must have a negative report for ELISA or PCR BVD-PI test that has been collected by an accredited vet. The results should be recorded on the CV issued for entry onto the KEC for the NAILE. • Junior heifer show will accept electronic papers, but they will need to check tattoos. Can you believe it? Fall is approaching us, which means sale season is in full swing. With upcoming sales, it is almost time for the Leading A Legacy sale on October 12th. The fundraiser will be hosted at Sullivan Farms in Dunlap, Iowa, the evening before their Maternal Legends Sale. This year we have outstanding lots for the auction. This year our foundation heifer is being donated by Peak View Ranch of Fowler, Colorado. According to Rick Leone, owner of Peak View Ranch, they are honored to provide the foundation heifer for 2019. “This young April heifer is our pick of the spring heifer calves,” said Rick. “She exemplifies our program that utilizes the diverse and exceptional genetics our breed is blessed with. Her sire, Peak View Journey, was shown very successfully and is utilized now in our operation as a herd sire. He carries breed greats like SFS Danny D and MAV Charisma. She is out of a cow that brings performance orientated cattle like Waukaru Gold Card and Peak View Cosmo to the pedigree. She is extremely well balanced in her EPDS and will be easy calving and maternal as a cow. We are also offering 2 units of semen as part of this lot on Peak View Marksman, a tremendous son of SULL RGLC Legacy. Marksman stood reserve champion Shorthorn bull in Fort Worth and caught so much attention from cattle enthusiasts of all breeds. Peak View Stevie is halter broke and ready to show or go home and be part of your operation’s replacement pen.”

The AJSA has gathered some very exciting items that were donated to the auction this year. If you are looking for an outstanding opportunity to feature your program, here’s your chance! The American Shorthorn Association donated the back cover of the 2020 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference program. Your special ad will be featured in front of all juniors in America. Cindy Cagwin-Johnston and the Shorthorn Country also donated a full color, one-page ad in the May/June issue of Shorthorn Country and a revolving banner ad on shorthorncountry.net. Designs by Arin donated a $300.00 voucher to apply towards the design of sale catalogs, advertising, marketing pieces, graduation announcements, wedding announcements and logo. Many photography sessions and promotional photos were donated as well. Rosemary Thompson of RM Photography donated a photography session at the 2020 National Junior Shorthorn Show, as this would a would be great place to have senior pictures, family photos, or just for fun pictures taken. Caseelynn Johnston donated a senior photo session at the 2020 Junior Nationals. An ALM Promotional photo was donated by Alison Manchester to capture a promotional photo of your herd sire or leading donor. We also have a wonderful opportunity donated if you are looking to get away for a weekend and explore beautiful scenery. Paint Valley Farms donated a weekend stay at the Pine Loft Bed & Breakfast,

with excellent accommodations in the Heart of Amish Country in Millersburg, OH. The Pine Loft package will offer a three-night stay and a $100.00 gift certificate to Bags, a local favorite downtown restaurant. There’s more to be seen than scenery alone in Amish Country, it has a variety of attractions for families, groups, couples and individuals varying from shop tours, wineries, festivals sight-seeing and museums. Also feel free to stop and visit Paint Valley Farms as it just a ½ mile from the location of the Pine Loft bed & breakfast. = News & Notes Farewell Mrs. Lillabelle Mae “Belle” Steck, 88, of Wataga, Ill., died Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Hawthorne Inn, Galesburg. She was born June 7, 1931 in Highland, Illinois to Clyde and Mildred (Rogier) Lebegue. She married Darrel E. Steck June 20, 1953 in Highland, Ill. He preceded her in death October 18, 2017. Surviving are two sons, David (and Sharon) Steck of Galesburg, and Dean (and Janice) Steck of Laurel, Neb., a sonin-law, Lee (and Stephanie) Steele of Gilson, a sister, Elaine Goodwin of DeKalb, Ill., a brother in law, Jerry Buzzard of Trenton, Ill., a sister in law, Shirley Steck of Wataga, five grandchildren, Craig (and Stephanie) Steck, Dirk (and Lindsey) Steele, Darla (and Chris) Donovan, Crystal (and Ryan) Dunklau and Michelle

(and Scott Montilla) Clague and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Debra Steele on November 1, 1991, a grandson, Cole Steele, two sisters, Myrtle Buzzard and Gene and her husband Herb Luginbuhl, and a brother in law, John Goodwin. Belle graduated from Highland High School in 1949 where she was the valedictorian. She graduated from Illinois State University in 1953 with a home economics degree. She was a member of the Kappa Omicron Phi home economics honor society and Kappa Delta Phi education society. During her years in college, she was the head waitress at Fell Hall where she served the college presidents luncheons. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Galesburg where she was a Deacon, Mission Board member and in charge of funeral luncheons. She was also the White Cross chairman for her church. She was a 4-H leader for Oneida, Mix-N-Fix and was a judge for local

4-H and county fair’s exhibits. She was inducted in to the Illinois 4-H foundation Hall of Fame in 2011. She was a charter member of the Knox County Home Economics and a 50 plus year member of the Knox County Home Extension. She was a member of the Tuscarora Study Club. She enjoyed the outdoors which included helping on the farm, gardening and yard care. Belle was well known for her cinnamon rolls, jelly, pickles and lima beans. She loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, where in many cases, she had her own reserved seating. When it came to Shorthorns, Belle was very active with the Shorthorn Lassies. Her involvement ranged from the state level to the National Shorthorn Lassies; including being a chaperon for many events.
