he theme for our 2018 Annual Meeting and Forum is “Position Yourself for Success” and this idea begins with relevance, which is using information or focusing on a particular method to reach success. Each breeder or member has their own approach or technique to reach their particular goals which represent their particular idea of what is to be accomplished. It is important to position yourself to be relevant in order to reach your individual idea of success. The program at this year’s Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet is designed to provide you with ideas and information relevant to “Position Yourself for Success”. There are a number of changes going on behind the scenes in our industry right now. We need to be exposed to these modifications and directions to allow each ASA member and breeder to make determinations that will prepare them for success and sustainability in the future. “Understanding the Future Markets of the Beef Industry and How the Consumer will Drive It” is the first topic. We may be in the registered seedstock business but we had better pay attention to the consumers who purchase and consume our product; it is relevant to our success. There’s a new customer consuming beef today. The newest group of shoppers is young; they have demands and want answers to their questions before they purchase and consume their food. As a result, we as producers have opportunities to provide the type of product and information to satisfy their demands. Just being certified and documented as a specialty product can add $.20 per pound to a set of feeder calves. Feedlots are pursuing new systems like grass feed beef. Some feed yards and packers are looking at running their own cows to make sure they have the genetics to generate a product that will fill the market needs. Today, AI studs in the dairy semen business may own more cows than herd sires. The same principles are in place in the beef industry, ensuring the company has the resources to provide the type of animal or genetics relevant for the consumer. The educational sessions we have assembled are focused on topics geared to helping you “Position Yourself for Success.” The speakers at this year’s event have experiences and information we all should consider essential in order to stay relevant in our industry. This may mean some different goals and definitions of success as new markets emerge and technology continues to develop. This event is full of Shorthorn fellowship which is just as valuable as the educational forums. = Beef Business

Prepping for Sale Season October is right in the heart of the busiest season on the breed association calendar. From state fairs in August through the last sale in December, and all the meetings, sales, and national shows in between, the fall is much like trying to sprint a marathon to get everywhere I have to be! It’s an enjoyable sprint, however, with lots of high-quality cattle and top notch cattle people along the way. I hope to find just enough time to squeeze in as much college football and playoff baseball as possible out on the road. Hopefully, you are in a situation where you can bring in some new stock to your program. There will lots of opportunities to find Shorthorn genetics that can improve almost any cow herd. Whether you are looking for a donor cow, a show prospect, bred heifers, or some young cows to replace your older stock, having a plan will help you sort through the sea of information in catalogs, advertisements and online. Here are some of my thoughts on what to emphasize when shopping for seedstock. 1. In my mind, the most important aspect of a building your game plan when looking to purchase cattle is your

budget. I am a firm believer in buying the absolute best cattle you can afford without getting yourself in a financial pickle. Having an amount you are comfortable with spending (and not being afraid to spend it for the right animal) is a big part of the selection process for a buyer. 2. Knowing what type of animal you are in the market for is another important piece of the puzzle. If you need to bring in some young cows to replace your older females, then there’s not much benefit to spending a lot of time studying open heifer calves. If a donor cow is at the top of your wish list, then the bred heifers at the end of the sale probably don’t garner your attention. Know your need and stick to it. 3. Whatever you are in the market for, it’s important that any animal you bring in is improving the quality of your herd in some way, or else she may not be worth bringing home. Obviously, phenotypic improvement is an easier measure of quality to determine. If she’s phenotypically good enough to be in the top half of your herd when she enters your pasture, she should be a good fit. If she has production records from her

calves that would outperform a portion of your cows, then she’s shaping up to be a good investment. Genetic values (EPDs) that improve your herd in specific traits of importance certainly merit consideration for purchase. 4. I think there are some untraditional methods to consider when you think about improving the quality of your herd. Buying a few cows because you were able to get more pasture for next year is an improvement over leaving the pasture ungrazed. Bringing in bred heifers while removing your oldest cows brings the herd’s average age down and increases the long-term production potential of the group. Being in the stands for an auction is a thrilling event that gets your blood pumping, especially when you are in the market to bring home some new genetics. Having a game plan and sticking to it can help you make more confident purchases and avoid buyer’s remorse. Knowing your budget, your targets, and finding prospects that will improve your herd quality are all good things to keep in mind to make the right purchases this fall. Happy hunting! =

ASA and University of Illinois Host Successful Field Day By Matt Woolfolk

A crowd of Shorthorn breeders gathered on the campus of the University of Illinois for the first ASA National Sire Test Field Day. Attendees had to opportunity to get an inside look at the UI Sire Test program, learn more about the ongoing research at the University, and view the cattle on feed from 2017 calf crop of the ASA/UI Sire Test. Dr. Dan Shike from the University of Illinois Animal Science Department welcomed the group to campus and gave them an overview of the process of the Sire Test from conception through harvest. He shared information about the cow herd used for the test, management practices throughout the testing timeline, and shared some of the data collected and how a sireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance in the test compared to their current EPDs. Dr. Shike was a very knowledgeable resource who continued to share facts and information with attendees throughout the day. Dr. Josh McCann, also from the Department of Animal Science, highlighted some of the current research at the university. With approximately 30 projects currently going on, McCann highlighted research that focused on protein requirements in growing calves, the effects of transitioning and diet changes on calf performance, and the effects of rubber matting on performance and structural soundness in a confined feedlot setting. With the sire test calves being fed in a

confined scenario, this was especially unique and informative research for the audience. University of Illinois Beef Extension Educator Travis Meteer joined the program to discuss early weaning. He mentioned advantages and opportunities to incorporate early weaning into an operation, as well as the potential drawbacks and obstacles that come with this management practice. All the calves that were a part of the ASA Sire Test were early weaned, so it was valuable for those who attended to learn why U of I uses this practice in their program and the benefits they have found. The final spot on the program was Matt Woolfolk from ASA. Matt discussed what programs like the U of I test can do to help the breed continue raising the type of cattle the industry desires. Woolfolk mentioned that breeders can use information gathered in a sire test to help them make decisions in their breeding program, while the association can use the data collected to demonstrate to the industry what Shorthorn-influenced cattle can do in a commercial cattle enterprise. After lunch, attendees were handed data sheets and given the opportunity to view the cattle from the 2017 Sire Test calf crop. Many breeders enjoyed the opportunity to see how progeny from different sires compared to each other and get to see the sire test in action instead of just as a data set on a spreadsheet. were made about the quality of these feeder cattle being outstanding. The cattle will be on feed until the early part of December. They will be sent to harvest at that time and we will receive the carcass data from all the cattle in the test. We are also looking forward to receiving feed intake data at the conclusion of the trial. The cattle are currently on a GrowSafe system collecting this information. This will be some of the first data of this type added to the ASA database. I want to thank everyone at the University of Illinois for being such a pleasure to work with throughout the entire process. Dr. Shike and his team have been extremely helpful at every turn and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them. Thanks again to everyone who attended the field day. Faye Smith is the 17 year old daughter of Troy and Sommer Smith from Walton, Kansas. Faye is currently the Kansas Shorthorn Lassie Queen. She is currently a senior at Newton High School,

planning to attend Kansas State for a degree in Agriculture Communications. A fun fact about Faye, she received the prestigious Red Coat award at her first Junior Nationals.

Emily Fry is the daughter of Tim and Emily Fry of Danville, Indiana. She is a 17 year old senior at Danville Community School, plans include attending a Junior College and major in Animal Science. Emily is currently

serving as the Indiana Lassie Queen and is looking forward to the National Contest. Emily attended her first junior national show at six months old and has attended 13 junior nationals since.

Rae Gresso hales from the great state of Texas. Rae is the 19 year old daughter of Steve and Beth Gresso of Sugarland, Texas. She is a sophomore at Texas A&M College Station majoring in Animal Science. She aspires a job

in the Agriculture industry. Rae is currently serving as the Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen. In 2017 Rae was the top Shorthorn Livestock exhibitor.

Once again, the American Shorthorn Association and the University of Illinois are working together to give breeders the opportunity to showcase and compare their genetics in a commercial setting through the ASA/U of I Sire Test. Over the past 2 years, 250 Shorthornsired calves have been born in the U of I commercial herd and are going through complete and comprehensive data collection from birth through carcass. The ASA Board of Directors and Staff are looking to grow commercial acceptance of Shorthorn genetics, and our partnership with the University of Illinois on the Sire Test is one of our best outlets to collect relevant data in a commercially-oriented operation. For the 2019 Sire Test, we have access to 300 of the U of I’s SimAngus commercial cows to be bred artificially to up to 15 Shorthorn bulls. In discussions with Dr. Shike at the University of Illinois, a minimum of 10 sires are needed in order to make the test work

from a cowherd management and data comparison standpoint. With less than 10 bulls, the test is not feasible for the U of I to continue with the program. In order to keep the Sire Test going, we need breeder buy-in and support. There are several benefits to enrolling your herd sire in the U of I Sire Test. The data collected on your herd sire will be advantageous to your program. The ability to generate data in large, multisire contemporary groups is something that many breeders don’t have the herd size to accomplish. The multi-sire comparisons within the test build strong links of comparison within the data set. If you have a young herd sire, this is a chance to gather more data on him in addition to your own herd, building EPD accuracy more quickly. Participating in the Sire Test is one way to gather data that may be difficult to collect otherwise, such as carcass data, as well as feed intake and efficiency information from a GrowSafe system.

All calves in the Sire Test are tested by ASA with the uLD genotype test to verify parentage and add genomic information to the database. To collect all this information yourself would cost you approximately $150-$200/calf. Selected bulls will be featured in the Shorthorn Country and ASA Insider e-news. Articles and information will be published with data from the trial, showcasing sire group performance. If you’ve been looking for a unique way to get your bull noticed in the Shorthorn industry, the ASA/U of I Sire Test is a great option. Farewells

Charles Rollie Arbaugh, 65, of Alderson, WV passed away unexpectedly on his farm. Born January 29, 1953 at Ronceverte, WV he was the son of the late Charles Baylous and Mary Elizabeth Wickline Arbaugh. Charles had farmed all his life and taught Agriculture at the Federal Prison at

Alderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Jack Wayne Surgeon, Jr and a cousin, Jackie Wickline. He was a member of the Alderson Nazarene Church. Charles was instrumental in getting the Greenbrier County Livestock Show started for the youth to get experience before the fair. He was a member of the Farm Bureau where he served on the Young Farmers Committee and was also a member of the American Shorthorn Association. . Survivors include his sister, Chita Sur-

geon, niece, Katrina Lynn Alderson and great nieces, Katelynn and Alyssa Alderson all of Alderson, WV, aunt, Margaret Wickline of White Sulphur Springs, WV, special cousins, Jacqueline Wickline Brown, Jamie Wickline, Joan Arbaugh and Wanda Carr, several cousins and numerous friends. With sale season started it’s time for the Leading a Legacy sale that is hosted at the upcoming Maternal Legends sale at Sullivan Farms in Dunlap, Iowa. This year we have some fabulous lots for auction. Our foundation heifer for this year is being donated by David Ragsdale from Sutherland Shorthorns. The heifer is bred to an Argentinian bull owned by Little Cedar Farms in Michigan. Isn’t that cool! We have some tremendous items that were donated to the auction this year. The Fox Family donated a weekend in Keystone Colorado where you can go hiking, fishing, horseback riding, sailing, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. While you are outdoors you need a fun family game to play which is where the wooden cornhole game that was donated by Braden Bowers comes in handy. We have some fabulous items that are for the home. We have super special 13x40 canvas prints called “Beefy Babes” from the Steel Cow Americowna Collection. This has five of their most popular images in one awesome print. C.J. Brown is donating a print that will be unveiled

for the very first time at this auction in support of the National Junior Shorthorn Show. It will not be offered to the public until the NAILE. This print will feature the red neck roan calf with an ear tag that says “American Shorthorn Jr. Nationals 2019.” If the buyer desires to personalize the ear tag with their own herd and cow number, she has offered to switch that for them in Louisville. She can also change the reflection of the boy to a girl if so desired. Overall framed size is 19 x 30. Braden Bowers donated a custom wooden side table with a color inlay show heifer. These items are perfect for those who are always searching for that perfect unique touch to their homes. This year we also are featuring the vintage “We Raise Shorthorns” sign which is the last of its kind that is going to be offered for sale donated by Bakenhus Cattle Company. We also have some fabulous donations for those in need of marketing assistance. Designs by Arin has donated a voucher to apply towards the design of marketing materials. Focus Marketing Group is donating $400 towards any logo design. Stephanie Steck donated an ad design. Rockin’ K Productions has donated a

Potential buyers walked the display pens on the afternoon prior to the sale and filled the sale ring on sale day. A truly top quality offering was presented with leading individuals in all categories. The bidding was very active during the snappy auction from those in the seats as well as those on the phones and on the internet. As always, the hospitality at this event was excellent.
