NAILE Shorthorn Steer Futurity Goes Non-Terminal Shorthorn steers will be ultrasound scanned for carcass traits rather than harvested following the show. As a result, Shorthorn steers can also enter in the Junior Steer Show and exhibit twice. Steers must adhere to Junior Steer Show rules and go through a separate check-in process. We hope this change will encourage exhibitors to bring their Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus steers to Louisville. For questions, contact Patrick Wall at 402-393-7200. Nomination forms due October 1.

New Policy at ASA Effective July 1, 2013: All activities must be paid for at time of request. Work will not be released until payment is made in full. It is recommended that a credit card number is left on file at the ASA or send a credit card number with each processing order to quicken request. Online activities can use PayPal or leave a credit card number on file with ASA. A receipt will be emailed or mailed each time the card is charged. For any questions, please contact the office at 402-393-7200.

Fee Change for Duplicate Request Effective July 1, 2013: $10.00 each up to five duplicates requested. Any additional duplicates requested over five, are $7.00 each as long as requested at the same time.

Transfer Fee for Non-Members Effective July 1, 2013: The fee for a non-member animal transfer over 90 days at $122.00 is no longer in effect. Non-members will be charged $62.00 per transfer after 60 days or more. The 90 day transfer charge is still in effect for WHR and TOC members.

Long-time Oklahoma Shorthorn breeder Jeff Bedwell sorted the Rotational PACE Show, which exhibited 58 head of Shorthorn bulls and females. Grand and Intermediate Champion Bull was awarded to MFK Injun Jo 132K X, owned by Wesley Korthaus of Smithfield, Ky. The July 2012 bull is the son of SULL Final Answer 824. Reserve Grand and Senior Champion went to MFK Profesional X, also owned by Wesley Korthaus. The September 2011 bull calf is sired by Abertees The Professional. The Missouri State Fair was the site for the Area 6 Rotational PACE Show on August 17, 2013. This year’s PACE show was dedicated to the Bertz Family longtime Shorthorn breeders from Mayview, Mo. Judge Jared Boyert, Elwood, Ill., evaluated a tremendous set of 56 females and 19 bulls. In addition 9 ShorthornPlus females were exhibited prior to the purebred show. Digital subluxation (DS) Q&A The research and discovery process behind DS has been a long and winding road with several unforeseen intersections. With a very small number of affected calves reported, the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) has exercised patience but always remained open and honest with breeders about the known condition. Dr. Jon Beever has isolated the mutation and developed a validated test. The test is being licensed through the proper channels and will be marketed by DNA testing providers in the near future. In order to help breeders better understand the condition, Dr. Beever developed a series of questions and answers regarding inheritance, testing, and breeding management of DS. The ASA will handle this defect in the same manner as it has with Tibial Hemimilia (TH) & Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca (PHA). However, the effective management of this defect is a bit different. Please read on. What is Digital Subluxation (DS)? DS is a congenital abnormality that involves the malformation of one or both hind legs usually below the hock. Typically, there is deformity of the leg involving the pastern joint where it joins the hoof (Figure 1). Depending on the severity of distortion, the survivability of affected calves can vary widely from relatively normal mobility to severely restricted movement, sometimes requiring euthanasia.

Is DS heritable? More than two years

ago, the American Shorthorn Association informed breeders that several calves affected with DS symptoms had been reported. However, at that time, it was unclear whether or not DS was controlled by environmental or genetic factors. Over a two year period of time, samples were collected from 18 calves affected with DS, both registered and non-registered. Pedigree information for many calves suggested at least one common ancestor was shared across pedigrees, although this ancestor was not present in all pedigrees. Furthermore, clear evidence of a single common ancestor on both sides of the pedigree was not found. Subsequently, DNA samples from these calves were used to determine whether they shared specific chromosome segments, thus suggesting a genetic basis for DS. This analysis revealed that the majority of affected calves (n=11) did share a common chromosome segment indicating that the condition is potentially inherited as a recessive trait. Analysis of the remaining seven calves showed that each of these calves had at least one copy of the same chromosomal segment, also supporting a genetic basis for the condition; however the mode of inheritance remained unclear. Sequencing of genes within the shared chromosomal segment identified a mutation that was common to all affected calves. This mutation results in impaired function of the encoded gene due to the insertion of approximately 9,000 DNA base pairs. This eventually results in the production of a protein molecule that is non-functional. However, gene expression analysis shows that functional protein is also produced approximately 60% of the time, thus, in part, leading to the variability in the pathology of affected calves. So, is the inheritance of DS similar to TH and PHA? Yes, the inheritance of DS is similar to TH and PHA in that both parents must be carriers of the mutation for a calf to be affected, thus it is inherited as a recessive trait. However, DS is different than TH or PHA in two

ways. Firstly, because normal protein can be produced even in the presence of the mutation, the severity of the DS deformities can be highly variable. In fact, an estimated 40% of homozygous calves may appear relatively normal in appearance. In genetic terms, this is called penetrance. Penetrance is defined as the proportion individuals that express the trait out of the number of individuals that have the appropriate genotype. Secondly, homozygosity for the specific mutation causing DS is not required for a calf to be affected. Although the majority of the affected calves were homozygous (n=11) for the mutation, seven of the calves were only heterozygous; however, these seven calves were also carriers of the PHA mutation. This is able to happen because the mutation causing DS occurs in the same gene as the mutation causing PHA. In the case of the PHA mutation, no functional protein is produced and calves that are homozygous for this mutation display the PHA phenotype. In contrast, calves homozygous for the DS mutation or heterozygous for both the DS and PHA mutation are susceptible to the DS phenotype. This is because enough functional protein is produced to avoid the PHA pathology, yet there is still a deficiency in function so the DS pathology occurs. In addition, for the calves collected in this project, those that carried both the DS and PHA mutation were always displayed a more severe DS phenotype. Say what? These data indicate that a specific mutation causes an individual to be susceptible to DS, however, the susceptibility is not 100% (penetrance). In contrast to abnormalities like TH and PHA, where the mating of carrier parents results in 25% of the offspring being born with the disease, the mating of DS carriers would only result in approximately 15% of calves (25% multiplied by the estimated penetrance of 60%). Additionally, in matings where one parent is a DS carrier and the other is a PHA carrier, one would expect the same number or more affected calves,

often times with a significantly more severe DS phenotype. At the most basic level, DS Carriers need to avoid being mated with other DS Carriers and PHA Carriers. In addition, any untested candidates of DS and/or PHA should also not be mated to one another. Keep in mind, this genetic condition may be present in other breeds, specifically those that already test for PHA. Since the DS condition is non-lethal and the individual phenotypes can vary greatly, breeders need to proceed with even

more caution. Any animal that exhibits two (2) copies of the DS defect can actually have no visual signs of the condition. These animals are also known as “homozygotes” or “affected” individuals. Any animal that is the progeny of a tested or potential DS Carrier sire and dam should be tested to be of Free or Carrier status before applying for registration papers. This practice will help prevent animals that do not display obvious outward signs of a genetic condition from entering the breeding population. The ASA will be working diligently to add DS status to

pedigree information as soon as possible. In the meantime, any animals in your breeding herd can be tested for DS today. Since I was crowned as your National Shorthorn Lassie Queen this past November at the North American International Livestock Exposition I have gained a lot of experience, friends, mentors, and memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. It’s hard to explain and summarize a whole year of my experience and gratitude in one small thank you article. This time last year, I would never have dreamed that I would be where I am today. I want to start off by thanking my amazing family. Through this journey they have been with me every step of the way. My mother and father have been a huge inspiration to me. When I got discouraged, I could always count on them to help me find my way and work through all of the planning, traveling, and finances. I can never thank them enough for the countless hours they have spent with me on the road chaperoning me and assisting me when I needed it. I also want to say thank you to my brothers and sister-in-law, David, Fran, and Jeffrey, for al-

ways being there for me and encouraging me, even when I didn’t think I needed it. This experience has enabled me to become closer to you and I have loved every minute of it. I love you all more than I can ever describe. Over the course of this year I have traveled to Denver, Colorado, Fort Worth Texas, The Kentucky Beef Expo, Junior Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa, The Missouri State Fair, The Kentucky State Fair, Star Search Sale at Cates Farm in Modock, Indiana, The America Royal, The Keystone Show, and the California Shorthorn Association Picnic. It has been a very busy year, but I wish I could have attended more. Each of these events has given me the opportunity to meet the most amazing breeders and members in the beef cattle industry. Without all of the love and generosity I have been given, I would not have been able to travel as much as I have. A few more people I want to be sure to mention are the wonderful breeders and members within the state of Kentucky.

During my reign I traveled to nine different states for various shows, sales, and KEY Conference. You have been so generous and supportive of me on this journey. I especially want to thank Faye Korthaus and Fran McCall. You have both been there for me from the very beginning when I decided to become the Kentucky State Queen three years ago. From the loaning of the tartan, to helping me with my crown, to advice on how to walk, talk, and even wave, you have been there and because of your help I have become the third National Queen to come from the state of Kentucky, which I consider to be a huge honor. The National Shorthorn Lassie Association is excited to announce the two young women vying for the 2013-2014 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen at the North American International Livestock Exposition. These young ladies will have opportunities to interact with breeders, help at all of the shows at NAILE, form bonds and learn about each other better, and interview with a panel of judges over the weekend. The National and Alternate Queen will be announced during Monday’s Open PACE show preceding the Grand Champion Female drive. Good luck to all the young ladies entering the Queen competition this year and be sure to stop by the Lassie booth during North American Livestock International for a cup of coffee and to check these two young women’s photobooks. The Great Lakes State’s own Sydeny Miller will be in competition for the National Lassie crown this year; and has served as Michigan’s Shorthorn Lassie Queen. She is a junior at Michigan State University majoring in Environmental Studies and Agriscience with hopes of becoming a high school agriscience teacher. She is a lifelong Shorthorn enthusiast and since she has been a litter girl, she has dreamed of serving as a Lassie Queen.

Victoria Osburn will be representing the Lone Star state after serving as the Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen this past year and the Texas Lassie Princess prior to that. Brittany is a freshman at Texas Tech majoring in animal science with hopes of getting involved in agriculture law. Ever since she got involved showing Shorthorns when she was in the fourth grade she knew she wanted to part of the Shorthorn Royalty to promote the breed.

Fall The air gets crisp, and the show season starts to come to a slow down, but it’s no reason to fret! Football is now on everyone’s TV and we all throw on our favorite team’s jersey to show our undying support. There is no better time to root for our team as they make their way the Super Bowl XLVIII or in college terms, of the Big Ten Network, the Rose Bowl. Which I have no doubt in knowing that my favorite NFL and college team will both make their way to the Bowls! Well, at least a girl can hope! As we support our football teams we must remember to support the red, white, and roan. Sales start to pick up this time of season and this is the time to really get the attention of other breeders and show them how introducing Shorthorn blood to their

herd is the way to go! Our breed is truly something to be proud of. Seeing the involvement of the junior members at this year’s Junior Nationals was quite incredible and heart lifting! Not only do the juniors deserve a hand, but so do the parents for the encouragement that they have provided throughout the year. The parents are what help give juniors new experiences and gain skills that they would not have been able to develop if it wasn’t for being introduced into this breed. Not only do you help your own kids in bettering themselves, but you all have done an outstanding job in helping the Junior Board. Your support is what helps the Junior Board make it to every show; such as Junior Nationals, NAILE, and the North Western Stock Show. Junior Board is an opportunity to

We believe the Ladies of Leveldale INVESTMENT Sale offers some for the most unique individuals and genetics seen in the beef industry! The Bowman and Leone families have consigned GREAT additions to the sale and represent some of the best documented genetics in attractive packages in the Shorthorn World. Many do not realize the effort and constant focus on genetic improvement by these two firms joining Leveldale. Their documentation includes top carcass performance. You will be evaluating cattle from herds with advanced genetic offerings. Leveldale prides its self in avoiding single trait selection. MULTITRAIT SELECTION for "Elastic" cattle that can adopt and thrive in many environments is our goal. RERPRODUCTION and low maintenance traits are necessities for our program! We raise many cattle ready to join the Elite Show ranks, but they also must fit into our modest nutrition, low maintenance, calve every year program. None of our cattle in the sale have had feet trimmed. The calves received no creep feed. We want you to know what you are buying and INVEST in what you want. Calves from our last sale became state fair champions and leading foundation females and bulls in herds across the nation. We are offering top calves and young productive females - a true production sale. We are also offering a small group of service age bulls from top females. We bring to you for your assessment very special genetic combinations with detailed data supporting them. They also have the eye appeal and structural soundness to help take your program forward in the show ring and on the ranch or farm. For example, two of our top cut of bred heifers in the sale offer multi-generation low maintenance, no calving assistance or other costly issues while having carcass ultrasounds in the top 1 percent of the Shorthorn breed in marbling and rib eye size. This is even more impressive in a breed that excels in carcass traits. These same heifers and others offered could have won many fairs if fed and groomed for that target. One was in the Champion Pen at National Western Stock Show this year.

She is a flush mate to the bulls that ended birth weight issues CWT -19 and restored fleshing ability to our cow herd. As a heifer calf she was Nick -0.34 Hammetts pick of her flush mates. Besides her flush mates that were REA chosen as herd sires, her steer mate won the 1st ASA feedlot trial. He 0.03 FAT posted an ADG of 4.2 pounds and a feed efficiency of 5.2 with a prime + 0.14 MARB carcass. He did all this profitably in a year that nearly all other producers experienced a loss in the trial. She has produced herd sires for some of the most discriminating cattle operations. Masterplan's MW ownership was initially shared with Doug Inness of the MCE -1.2 outstanding Inness Farms program, who had purchased 5 him in the Baukenhus sale ( we did not send enough CWT money on our bid to purchase him). We were optimism REA 0.06 that he would contribute to our program being the deepest 0.01 FAT son of MF Pacer, with testicles at one year of over 40cm, a great hoof and foot, adequate flexibility, not to straight in MARB -0.02 his makeup, coming from a dam with low birth weight on her calves and top performance on her weaning weights, a good udder and calving interval. He proved to be better than expected. He demonstrated good calving ease direct and in the last decade we have only assisted one 2 y/o daughter. =New & Notes Farewell Tribute Arlan Inghart Stangeland, age 83, died on July 2, 2013 at his home on Lake Lizzie. Arlan was born on February 8, 1930 in Fargo, ND to Inghart and Pearl (Olson) Stangeland. He attended the first eight grades at Oak Mound School. He graduated from Moorhead High School where he participated in football and music. He was baptized and confirmed at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Fargo. He was active in church choir throughout much of his life. For several decades, he was a frequent soloist at weddings and funerals and often sang duets with his mother. On June 24, 1950, he married his life partner, Virginia Trowbridge. After a brief stint working on the railroad, Arlan joined his father-in-law at Trowbridge Farms and worked for many years with his father-in-law and brothers-in-law before buying Deerhorn Farm in 1966. He raised a variety of crops and many types of animals: Registered Shorthorns, hogs, sheep, chickens, and registered Brittany Spaniels. He especially loved cattle and was President of the Minnesota Shorthorn Association and served for many years on their board of directors. Arlan was a natural leader and public

servant. Throughout his life he was the Sunday School Superintendent and President of the Brotherhood at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barnesville. For years, he cooked lutefisk at the annual church supper. He served on the Barnesville School Board. He was active in several farm organizations and the Republican Party. In 1966, Arlan was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives where he served for 8 years. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 - 1990. While in Congress, Arlan served on the Agriculture Committee where he was the ranking member of cotton, rice, and sugar. He was instrumental in keeping the sugar program in the 1985 farm bill. He also served on Public Works and Transportation where he was the ranking member on water resources. He was the co-founder of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, and he was active in the Congressional Prayer Breakfast. Arlan retired to Lake Lizzie where he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and having coffee with friends. Arlan was an avid Bridge player. While in Congress, he represented the United States in a contest with legislators from Great Britain. Arlan loved people. He

Ohio Shorthorn Association members gathered on August 11, 2013 for the annual Ohio Shorthorn Picnic hosted by Turner Shorthorns of Somerset, Ohio. Attendees enjoyed a potluck lunch, viewing cattle, contests and door prizes. Montie Soules, American Shorthorn Association executive secretary, was the featured speaker and addressed current issues within the Shorthorn breed and cattle industry.

was in a local ROMEO group, played Bridge several times a week, and continued to meet with classmates from Moorhead High School several times a year. He loved his family and friends and faithfully kept in contact with aging relatives and friends. He spent many hours in his wood working shop creating gifts for grandchildren. Arlan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia; his children; David of Amarillo, TX; Beth (Darrel Randklev) of Grand Forks; Brian of West Fargo; Jean of Pelican Rapids; Todd (Erica) of Otsego; Jeff of Barnesville; and Stuart (Pam) of Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and a grand son-in-law. Also surviving him are a brother, Loren (Vivian) of Richland, WA; and a sister, Sonja Diehl of Fargo; and sisters-in-law, Bert Stangeland of Moorhead; Peggy Gunderson of Boring, OR; Mary Trowbridge of Barnesville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Hugh and Delia Trowbridge; a brother, Gordon; brothers-in-law, Harlan Diehl, Perry Trowbridge, and Gordon Gunderson; in-laws, Don and Marion Anderson; Arvid and Delia Shulstad; and granddaughter, Morgan. =
