This will allow you, or our staff, time to make corrections or gather additional information if there are issues preventing the registrations from being processed. This is also a reminder to get your Donor Dams’ DNA testing completed.

The Breed Moves On!

all sale season is upon us. The Covid-19 Pandemic has changed things for everyone and still, the Shorthorn breed moves on! Farmers and ranchers continue daily activities, feeding and caring for their animals; they continue making breeding decisions, getting the cow herd bred and calving them out. A semi-normal lifestyle continues for Shorthorn breeders throughout the country, all the time optimistically preparing for sales and marketing Shorthorns. Due to the risk of transmitting the virus among large groups of people, sales looked different last spring – a trend that will continue into the fall. We have learned to deal with masks, social distancing and virtual meetings and online sales; features that we are growing accustomed to. This is our new normal as some choose to attend sales in person and others opt to do their bidding by virtual means. The demand for top Shorthorn genetics will prevail and the sale season will move on! Change will persist in 2020; new ways of doing business are being created and many will carry on with these avenues in the future. We must all become open minded to those possibilities while, at the same time, keep in mind and fully understand that our business is people related. Through texts, email, FaceTime, social media, Zoom and GoToMeeting, virtual communication is our new norm. Use all these tools to stay in touch and reach out to fellow breeders, members and your customers. People are still people and cattle are still cattle. The passion people have for the Shorthorn business has not changed. So, make a point to connect and continue attending and/or participating in the fall season, however it is shown or shared! On a different note, we will host the ASA Annual meeting this December in Kansas City. Plans include a social at the 10

ASA Office on Friday evening, Dec. 4th, followed by the Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5th at the Hilton Kansas City Airport. A program Saturday morning will focus on marketing your cattle where panelists and speakers will share the do’s and don’ts of marketing. The ASA Annual Meeting will be Saturday afternoon, followed by a social before the Awards Banquet that evening. There will be some Youth Development Fundraising opportunities this year in conjunction with the Annual Meeting Forum and Awards Banquet. This is a great time to share ideas and meet fellow Shorthorn enthusiast. The best sessions may be the breaks when breeders visit with each other and learn what they are doing. This has become a must-attend event for Shorthorn breeders. Several fundraising changes are on the horizon for Shorthorn Youth programs including the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference. The Resource Development Committee has finalized a number of new recognitions for donors and sponsors. Watch for Lot 50 at sales in which the sale host(s) will donate 50% of the Lot 50 proceeds to the Youth Development Fund, or Lot 100 when an embryo or semen lot is donated by the sale host(s) with 100% of the proceeds going to the Youth Development Fund. The breeders making the donation of a Lot 50 or Lot 100 will become part of the Shorthorn Royal Society. Look for the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund logo to identify these SHORTHORN lots in upcoming sales: Royal Society

The Foundation Heifer Sale will be held in Louisville during the North American. Donors who purchase this heifer will become part of the Red, White or Roan Club. A new pledge system will be in place allowing Shorthorn pledges to be billed through Red, White & Roan the registry. These pledges will also admit you to the Red, White or Roan Club. Donations from these fundraising activities help pay for the Junior National and Youth Conference, plus other AJSA educational and leadership activities. Please check out a full article on new opportunities to invest in the Shorthorn Junior Programs by Shelby Diehm on page 20. 2020 is proving to be a challenging year with many unknowns from cow shows to college and professional sports. Regardless of how Covid-19 continues to affect our daily and professional lives, we need to learn how to live with it; just as everyone who helped make the 2020 Junior National and Youth Conference a huge success, Shorthorn sales this Fall will be a success as “THE BREED MOVES ON!” =

A Series of Numbers: Maternal EPDs Welcome to the second installment of my series on performance data, EPDs, and how we use them in the Shorthorn breed. Last month, carcass traits were the point of discussion. Now, maternal traits will be taking center stage. Defining a “maternal” trait can sometimes be difficult. If you ask 10 Shorthorn breeders to define “maternal”, you can very easily get 9 or 10 different answers. Believe me, I’ve tried it! It’s even more difficult to define with data. There are traits that are absolutely important to making a good cow, such as mothering ability, fertility, and udder quality, that we don’t have the data points to create a genetic prediction tool for the trait (at least not yet). For this article, I will focus on the ones that we do currently have an EPD for while diving deeper into them. The four traits are Milk, Total Maternal, Calving Ease Maternal, and Stayability. For me, the most difficult part of defining and using maternal trait EPDs is remembering that these traits we are looking at are a generation away, thus not as straightforward to define. When studying a bull for traits like CED, WW, and MB, the EPDs are predicting the performance of his progeny directly (how easy his calves will birth, wean, and marble). With the maternal EPDs, we are analyzing the performance of his daughters, but not until they turn two and have a calf themselves. The EPD that is always the most difficult for me to define is the Milk EPD (MK), since we are not in the dairy industry and measuring sheer milking ability of our cows. The MK EPD attempts to measure the effects on weaning weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves due to the cow’s milking ability. The trait is measured in pounds. As the definition might imply, the data that fuels this EPD is weaning weight data. Total Maternal is the easiest of these traits to define mathematically. Abbreviated TM in Digital Beef, the 12

Total Maternal EPD combines the effects of weaning weight genetics from the dam along with her effect on weaning weight through milking. The formula for TM is half of the animal’s WW EPD plus MK EPD (½ WW + MK). The WW EPD accounts for half of TM because we are only trying to account for the effect that the dam would have on weaning weight, and since half of a calf ’s genetics come from the sire, we’re really only concerned with the dam’s contribution for this trait. The TM trait is expressed in pounds of weaning weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves. A higher TM equates to a larger effect on weaning weights due to the maternal effects (weaning growth genetics and milking ability). Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is very similar to the more popular Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD, but instead of the direct impact on the ease of calving for a sire’s progeny, it is measuring the calving ease ability of that bull’s two year old daughters. Like CED, CEM is measured and expressed as a percentage of unassisted births. The higher a CEM EPD, you would expect a higher percentage of unassisted births when calving out those two year daughters from a sire. The data to calculate CEM is drawn from the calving ease scores that are submitted to the ASA database from breeders, with the focus being on those scores turned in on first-calvers. The newest addition to our maternal EPDs is the Stayability trait (ST). It compares the number of a bull’s daughters that will still be working at the age of six. The six year old milestone is used because there is research and analysis that indicate that the average break-even point on a cow is six years old. The ST EPD is expressed as a percentage. A higher ST EPD indicates that a bull is more likely to have his daughters still working in your herd when they turn six when compared to a bull with a lower ST EPD. If you compare a bull with a

ST EPD of 12 to one with a 7 for the trait, you would expect five percent more of the 12 EPD bull’s daughters to still be producing at the six year mark. The data that fuels the ST EPD is the disposal code system for our WHR inventories, as well as calving records. Having this trait in place makes it even more important to use proper disposal codes when cows leave your herd, as well as getting those calving records logged on each cow. Even if it is dead or not up to your quality standards, getting it recorded helps us build a more accurate database to improve the ST EPD. One trait of maternal importance that we currently do not have an EPD for is udder quality. Suspension of the udder and teat size should be studied closely in your herd. There is a scoring system in place to categorize udder quality for both suspension and teat size. The scale goes from 1 (poorly suspended, large teats) to 9 (very tightly suspended, very small teats), and there are visual aids available on the ASA website. A score is recorded for BOTH of these characteristics independently of each other, and should be taken on the worst quarter of the udder within 24 hours of calving. I visited with people who have seen a lot of Shorthorn cattle lately, and they make comment that udder quality is something the breed needs to be improving. With more udder scores collected and submitted, we can build our database towards creating EPDs to help us make genetic improvement in these traits. For the final portion of this series, we will take a look at the relationship between performance data and genomics. With genomic technology becoming more prevalent in the industry, some may wonder if old-fashioned data collection is still relevant or necessary. I’ll touch on that topic further in-depth next month. =

Show Points Reminder As announced last month, the ASA Board of Directors followed the recommendation of the Show Committee and as a result, the Super Regional and Regional point system will be suspended for the 2020-2021 show season. With this change, we are still going to move forward with National Show Points. As a way to give out more awards for this show season, the ASA Board approved to add division winners for our National Show Points. We will score these division winners with the same points that allocate for the National Show Female and Bull awards. It is also approved that there must be at least two National Shows during the 2020-2021

show season in order for any national awards to be presented. This does not mean that an animal must exhibit at two National Shows, just that two Nationals Shows must take place. So far, one of the National Shows have canceled, Keystone International Livestock Exposition. If any more cancel we will get these updates to the membership as best as we can. During these unprecedented times because of Covid-19, we all have to anticipate possible adjustments happening to everything we do. The resulting awards for the National Shows will be presented at the 2021 Annual Meeting, which is the kickoff of our 150th Anniversary Celebration. =

Planning for the Future Even though the 2020 National Junior Shorthorn Show is over, I feel like I am just as busy as we begin planning for fundraising and the 2021 NJSS. As mentioned in the ‘Investing in the Future’ article, we have formed a new Resource Development Committee to plan and execute fundraisers for the new 501 (c)(3), the Shorthorn Youth Development fund. The last few months have been filled with weekly Zoom committee meetings to discuss details and changes to fundraising. The committee has made modifications and look forward to the upcoming fundrasisers. This year the AJSA will not host the Leading a Legacy fundraiser in Dunlap, Iowa. We will host a larger fundraiser, the Deck the Stalls Extravaganza, at the North American International Livestock Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, where we

will have live auction and raffle items as in the past. We will also be selling the Foundation Heifer, Martindell Babe 048, donated by Martindell Farms, LLC. You can learn more about the differences to fundraising in the ‘Investing in the Future’ article on page 52. The junior programs wouldn’t be possible without fundraising and donations. It is an investment in the future of the breed! During the first weekend in August, the junior board met in Kansas City to begin discussion of the 2021 NJSS to be held in Louisville, Kentucky. They discussed the negatives and positives of the 2020 NJSS so changes could be made for the better. They selected a theme – to be announced when the logo is released this fall. The junior board evaluated the contests and scoresheets to make improvements for competitors.

They decided to replace extemporaneous speaking with a career development/job interview type contest for seniors only. The board hopes this new contest will be beneficial for the competitors and their futures. They selected topics for speech, team sales and the beef cut for cook-off. It was also decided between the junior and senior board to continue with another two-year period of 25% ShorthornPlus Steers. After this two-year period, it will be reevaluated again. It has been a pleasure to work with sale hosts, Bryan & Marti Warner, Warner Ranch; Bill & Ron Bos, Sha Ron Farms, Jay Cech & Family and J. Adam Edmundson, Shalimar Ranch the guest consignors. Dear Shorthorn Friends, Welcome to the 2020 Fall Harvest Sale. This sale will feature a large group of quality bred Shorthorn females and heifer calves which represent some of the top genetics in the breed. Our fellow consignors and friends are offering the best of their herds. Some may feature a different genetic focus or type of cattle, but all will display strong Shorthorn quality cattle. You will find excellent Shorthorn females throughout this sale. There will be cattle available that will be suitable for a wide variety of programs. The cattle at Warner Ranch Shorthorns, in Riverton, Wyoming, are managed like a commercial herd. A cow is expected to raise a calf every year and maintain her body condition efficiently. Our program has focused on calving ease and maternal strength. We have selected cattle which possess plenty of natural muscle and are structurally sound, with much consideration given to good feet and legs, and udders which will hold up over a cowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s breeding career. Moving Forward with AJSA As the summer comes to an end, we look back on our memories from AJSA National in Abilene, Texas; and start looking ahead to our next big event. Now, it is time for us to begin planning for the upcoming fundraiser during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 14th, 2020. While you are in Louisville, you can show your holiday spirit by participating in “Deck the Stalls Extravaganza.” During NAILE, money will be raised for the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference through the sale of a Foundation heifer and other items. Why Should You be a Lassie? Many state queens say the same thing when asked if they are going to run to be a National Lassie Queen; “I don’t have time”, “It is too expensive”, or my personal favorite “I can’t show cattle and do all that is required of me”. These are all common misconceptions that young ladies have when considering running for National or Alternate Lassie Queen. So let me tell you a little bit of my time as a National Lassie and you tell me if you still have these misconceptions at the end. I can personally tell you that my time as National Lassie Queen has been extraordinary, with my year starting off normal and the ending looking like it might be a little different than most. However, my first stop as National Lassie was at the National Western in Denver, Colorado. This was one of my favorite trips. I had the amazing opportunity to meet many different Shorthorn Breeders that you usually don’t meet on the Eastern side of the United States. This opportunity allowed me to build relations with breeders from out west that I usually would not be able to do if it wasn’t for this. During this time, I was beginning my last semester of college

and my professors were more than willing to work with me. While at the National Western, I did a 50/50 drawing that allowed me to raise money that would help me with traveling expenses for the year. I donated items to the Summit Sale that benefited the National Lassie Association as well as help fund my travels. My next stop was the Fort Worth Stock Show in Fort Worth, Texas. This was another amazing opportunity. I helped with the Texas State Lassies silent auction and raffle and was able to meet some of the Texas breeders. I was very much looking forward to visiting the Lone Star state again for WHR Sale, but Covid-19 interfered with the rest of my spring travels. However, I am very much looking forward to the fall sale season! The most recent of my travels was to the 2020 Shorthorn Junior National and Youth Conference in Abilene, Texas. I exhibited four head of cattle and participated in every single contest throughout the week. I ended up being named the high point senior individual for the third year in a row. I was able to show and participate in contests all week and still do my duties in the ring with

help of the Texas Lassies and other State Lassies. To all the State Lassie’s that are thinking about running you can still do all the things you love about showing cattle and still be a Lassie. I was able to show at NAILE and run for Lassie. Nothing is impossible! The National Shorthorn Lassie Association is a great way for you women to get involved in the Shorthorn industry. Farewells C h a r l e s Vincent Meisner, 90, died at 3:20 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at his residence. He was born in Jersey County, Illinois on Oct. 9, 1929, and was the son of the late Henry and Ida Lena (Hoehn) Meisner. Charlie was born, worked, raised his family and passed away on the farm that he so cherished. He tirelessly worked the ground day and night in order to raise his family, and was able to ride his tractor for the last time just over a week ago. He also was employed as a rural mail carrier for many years through the Jerseyville Post Office, which was a perfect fit for him, as he knew no strangers, and the route sometimes took a little longer than necessary with his gift of conversation.

He graduated in 1947 from Jersey Township High School, and he proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was very active in the Jersey County community, and was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #492, Jersey County Fair Board, Tri County Shorthorn Association, Rural Mail Carrier Association, Knights of Columbus (where he volunteered many years for Sunday night bingo), and was a former leader for the Jersey County 4-H. He married the former Helen Elaine Schaefer on December 29, 1951 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville and together they shared 49 years of marriage, prior to her death on June 30, 2001. Surviving are his seven children and their spouses, Carolyn Meisner of Jerseyville; Carl Meisner of Virginia, IL; Theresa and Butch McGowen, Marilyn and Dennis Brunaugh, all of Jerseyville; John and Donna Meisner and Joan and

Marcus Schaefer, all of Piasa; and Louis Meisner of Jerseyville; 16 Grandchildren and their spouses, Jacalyn Meisner of Farmer City; Garrett Meisner of Jerseyville; Greta Meisner of Okalhoma City, OK; Kari and Justin Hart of St. Jacob; Nathan and Sarah Brunaugh of Jerseyville; Justin Brunaugh of Brighton; Ryan and Lauren Brunaugh and Ashley and James Wadlow, all of Jerseyville; Jacob Meisner of Princeville, IL.; Kayla and Spencer DeUel of Jerseyville; Rachel Meisner of Hillsboro; Tim Schaefer of Manhattan, NY.; Brian and Ashley Schaefer of Louisville, Ky.; Jennifer and Justin Cottingham of Alton; Chase Meisner and Logan Meisner, both of Jerseyville; and 11 Great Grandchildren, with two more on the way. In addition to his parents and his wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two sisters, Mildred Busker and Mary Corlas. =

Richard Craig Scott was born June 14, 1943 in Fort Monroe, VA and passed away in Bedford, TX. R i c h a r d graduated from We s t m i n s t e r College in Fulton, MO in 1965. Richard and Linda Gerred were married August 7, 1965 in Kansas City, MO. After the marriage Rich and Linda went to Fort Eustis, VA to begin his military service. Richard spent his military service in Germany attaining

the rank of Captain. Upon leaving the service, Richard (Dick) graduated from UMKC School of Law and worked as a Labor lawyer in a variety of places including the Dept. of Labor in Kansas City, Eastern Airlines in Miami, Western Airlines in Los Angeles and Delta Airlines in Atlanta before moving to Ft. Worth and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Upon retirement from BNSF Richard and Linda moved to their ranch in Jewett, TX, where they enjoyed ranching and raising Shorthorn cattle. Richard and Linda were active in the Texas Shorthorn Association and the American Shorthorn

Association. After leaving their ranch, they moved back to Hurst, TX. Richard is survived by his wife, Linda and daughter Erika of Ft. Worth. He is also survived by his sister Kathy Scott of St. Louis and brother John Scott of Kansas City and many other family members and friends. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. Rich will be placed at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas. =
