Welcome to Waukaru! Thank you for taking the time to investigate our offering of the 36th installment of Cow Power. We are excited about this year’s offering and believe that this set of females can bring profit to any beef enterprise. This year we brought out more of the younger, three and four-year-old females than before. These cows have produced great replacement females, and offer many years of production and profit generation for you. Also, you will find more references to cows that have yielded herdsires for cattleman across the nation. The demand for Shorthorn genetics with documentation continues to expand. It has been a fun year. We were fortunate to breed and exhibit the Champion Pen of Three and the Reserve Champion Pen of Five Bulls at the 2016 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. Many of their dams and sisters sell on September 17, 2016. Our bull sale in March, The Gathering 2016, was our most successful ever with more bulls sold at a higher average than ever before. The outlook for the Shorthorn breed is positive, and I continue to field calls from new users of Shorthorn genetics at a fast rate. The beef industry can be challenging. As the nation continues to restock the cow herd a couple of things standout: No matter the market, cattle with information sell for more dollars. Beef demand has stayed strong through challenging pressures globally. Despite beef complex price declines from 2014 & 2015, we are still experiencing the third highest price levels in our life time. These are exciting times to raise beef cattle. The signals forecast that the cow/calf sector is the place to be. Being in the driver seat gives cow/calf producers leverage as never before, and great responsibility. It will take cattle that have withstood intense culling pressure, have documentation, and can excel in any environment, to keep our industry vibrant. Thank you for this opportunity to tell our story. Royal Rose has been at the forefront of the cowherd her entire tenure. 8172 has consistently produced herd sires that have been sought out by seedstock producers from around the country. Her 2012 son was a member of our 2013 NWSS Reserve Champion Pen of Bulls and is now at work in Utah for Doug Moore. Her next son was a sought after Patent 8161 that also made it to the yards in Denver and is now in North Dakota at Westridge Shorthorns. Most recently, her 2015 son by Top Shelf 8165 was selected by Dover Ranch and now resides in Billings, Montana. 8172 has proven herself profitable every year. Unlike most progeny of a true calving ease sire, the Gold Mine 2109 daughters have mass and dimension, and maintain shortened gestation and moderate birthweights when mated to high-power bulls. Waukaru Red Nan 1049 is a full sister to senior herd sire Waukaru Orion 2047. Orion 2047 is a highuse sire here at Waukaru and his influence will continue to dominate for many years. Most recently, the Tri-County Steer Feedout Cooperative released their 2015 sire summary which named Orion 2047 the most profitable Shorthorn sire in the history of the feeding study. Orion 2047 really stamps his progeny with muscle and presence. Augusta 6114 is from the 0081 donor that was the second-high selling female last fall. Her two full brothers were impressive to watch all last spring; Kincaid 5146 was a member of our 2016 Res. Champion Pen of Five bulls at the National Western Stock Show. Combined with Demetrius 5148, the two demanded $12,000 and are breeding cows for The Plateau Partnership in St. Johns, AZ.

Waukaru Herd Sires Dominate TriCounty Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative Waukaru has continued its unwavering effort to collect carcass data. This commitment began in the 1960’s; the past ten years we have consigned to the TriCounty Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative (TCSCFC) based in western Iowa. The collection of data has been vital to our breeding program, but the revenue stream from the test cattle is paramount in our business structure. The crew at TCSCFC just released the 2015 Sire Profit Summary, and Waukaru bred bulls claimed the first, second, and fourth high spots based on total profit. The sire profit comparison program is for sires with five or more progeny consigned to the TCSCF program. This program equalized environmental impacts on the cattle, and then evaluated all sire groups for profitability under varying market and pricing grids. This year’s summary includes carcass data on over 69,000 head of cattle that are from 4,579 different sires of various breeds. The majority of the steers that Waukaru sends to TCSCFC are born at the farm; the remaining few are Waukaru bull battery progeny purchased from our customers. Most of the cattle are purebred Shorthorn and red, thus do not qualify for CAB premiums. Still, Waukaru bulls sort to the top across all breeds. Waukaru Orion 2047 leads the Shorthorn breed for total profit at the TCSCFC. Orion 2047 ranks in the top 96 percentile of all the 4,500 sires represented, placing 15th overall. The Orion 2047 steers have averaged 1,394 pounds at harvest, with the highest breed ADG of 3.82. They post an 853-pound average Hot Carcass Weight, Yield Grade 2 and over 50% low choice or better. Orion 2047 beats all of the Gelbvieh, Hereford, Maine Anjou, and Limousin. His data would rank him 2nd as a Charolais or a Red Angus, and 6th as an Angus or Simmental. Waukaru Orion 2047 generates profit; his semen, sons, and daughters are available at Waukaru. Waukaru Top Shelf 8165 is second in the breed at TCSCFC for total profit. This eight-year-old has proven himself a generator of dollars. A daughter produced the high selling bull in the recent The Gathering 2016. The Top Shelf 8165 steers went 80% Low Choice or better, and were Yield Grade 2’s. Top Shelf is in the top 93% of the over 4,500 sires tested, beating all Hereford and Gelbvieh cattle and also being second against the Charolais and Red Angus. We have been evaluating sires for over 12 years. This summary has grown from 35 sires in 2003 to 3,451 evaluated in 2012 and 1,128 reported in the printout. In this year’s sire summary over 69,000 head of cattle were evaluated, but TCSCF does not print sire averages and comparison unless there are 5 or more progeny by the bull. Additionally, in 2010 the board of directors decided to print only sires that had progeny born in 2011 and after.
