Thank you for taking time from a busy schedule to investigate our offering in the 37th Cow Power. This is an exciting group of females; we were able to dig into the heart of the three- and four-year-old females deeper than ever, put together more choices of bred heifers, and include a select group of heifer calves that I am confident will turn big profit over their lifetime. The past year has been better than ever to be raising Shorthorn cattle. More conversations have been had with non-traditional users of Shorthorn genetics and they are buying bulls and females at a fast rate. Also, more of our purebred clients have had more than ever before. Even with the fall of feeder and fat prices in 2016, we marketed a larger volume of Shorthorn bulls than any other year in our history. These new cattlemen continue to demand more information on the seedstock they purchase. They are asking the tough questions, and have been unrelenting in their quest to identify hassle-free seedstock that can deliver profit. The cattle in the next few pages will do that. The steers we feed out through the Tri-County Steer Co-op continue to impress. This year they generated an average profit per head of $408. That is more than $100 above the feedlot average. In the last fifteen years, retained ownership on the males that are not suited to be herdsires has been the profitable choice every time. Thank you again for allowing us to tell the Waukaru story. Throughout most of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 we witnessed unprecedented price levels in all segments of the beef complex. Despite a serious downturn in the market last fall, our commercial markets, feeder cattle and fed cattle, have rebounded to very profitable levels. With the current strength of the economy comes solid domestic demand for our great tasting US beef, the opening of the Chinese market and strengthening of all beef exports, our future indeed looks bright. With that comes opportunity to broaden one’s margins with superior genetics, technology and management. Now’s the time to invest in superior and proven genetics to insure optimum production & performance in your breeding operation. As we evaluated the sale cattle candidates, my conclusion: This is the most quality filled offering of truly breed improving brood matrons ever offered from Waukaru. A powerful statement, but after reviewing the data and the cattle, it became even more apparent to me the Waukaru breeding program is so much more than ”A Powerful Performance Herd”. You will find a long list of females in this catalog that have already produced herd sires, future donor dams & Waukaru replacement daughters that are being offered. It is a breeding program based on facts measured in all aspects for the efficient production of high quality beef. It all started as early as the 1960’s with Waukaru entering the Indiana Gold Medal Steer & Carcass program where carcass quality & yield were measured against all breeds. It continues today with possibly the largest & most complete data bank in the breed for not only performance but includes maternal production, carcass merit & feed efficiency for a commercially acceptable composition and superior genetic product. Again the 2017 American Shorthorn Association Genetic Evaluation Sire Summary is dominated by Waukaru sires in most all categories. Today Waukaru genetics are being used in North & South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, China and South Africa. Where Have We Been, and Where is Waukaru Going? This question is often asked throughout the year and we thought we should put it out where all can see. Waukaru intends to use and embrace all technologies available to make better cattle. This includes recording birth, weaning and yearling weights on all cattle born every year. We use ultrasound measurements for carcass traits, mature cow weights, kill data on fat cattle, and include as much genomic information as possible. Incorporating embryo transfer and artificial insemination is vital to replicating the top end of the cow herd. Using estrus synchronization, we were able to AI 200 females this spring. That number will continue to grow in the future. All of these tools combine to build a better beast. The following charts were generated by the American Shorthorn Association and compare the genetic trend of Waukaru genetics to the entire Shorthorn population for the last 20 years. We are proud of the advancements we have made, but humbly recognize that we are not done, and there is still improvement to be built.

These two charts show the change in genetic trend for birth weight (BW) and yearling weight (YW). Waukaru genetics are represented by the black line with red dots, the rest of the breed is the yellow line. Weaning weight and carcass weight have a nearly identical curve as yearling weight, and were only omitted due to space limitations. It is often said, “If you select for growth, you will get birth weight,” or the inverse. This simply is not true. As shown, you can design cattle that start small and grow rapidly.

Here are charts depicting calving ease direct and calving ease maternal. The two traits are often antagonistic of one another. It has been often noted how difficult it is to find sires whose calves are born easily and their daughters calve easily. Obviously, we are making progress to breed cattle that can do both, but there is still work to be done.

These two charts show that even though Waukaru genetics represent an advantage for both marbling and ribeye area over the rest of the breed, we are not yet where we want to be. Waukaru will continue to search out, acquire, and include high marbling cattle that have real muscle mass. Knowing that these traits are less heritable, marbling and ribeye area will be more easily influenced by the environment than the growth traits, will make progress more difficult but not elusive.

This pair of females are full sisters and from the Minnie 7063 donor that has a perfect record to date in her ability to produce herd sires. She has weaned five bulls that have been marketed through The Gathering in previous years for an average of $7,750. These sires are busy at work in Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Indiana and Kansas. Most recently, Waukaru Optimus 4095 topped The Gathering 2015 for $8,000 and now is a herd sire for the Loving Shorthorns of Kansas. Optimus 4095 is now a trait leader for WEPD, YEPD, $BMI and $FEED. Red Nan 7134 is sired by a son of KL Prime Time Teddy that we used heavily here for two seasons then sold him to Lost Valley Ranch of southern Indiana. She traces back to the dam of Gold Card 5042 and fills her pedigree with a set of sires that lead the breed in multiple traits. I believe Red Nan 7134 to be one of the real promising cow prospects from our herd.
