Welcome! Welcome to the 33rd running of Waukaru’s Cow Power Production Sale. The entire Jordan Family extends the warmest of invitations to join us in Rensselaer, Indiana on September 14, 2013 for good food, fellowship and good Shorthorn cattle. We understand that you have choices when searching for genetics, but all of us want to sincerely say “Thank You” for exploring the cattle at Waukaru. We are proud of our heritage, and understand the study of history is vital for any business to succeed as our eyesight is focused on the future. In the next few pages you find the newest genetics, resulting from the combined efforts of the latest technologies and methodologies. We believe it is imperative to record all the available data and appropriately analyze the information. Then, the cream can be sorted from the top to be reproduced. The drought of 2012 served as a “wake up” call for many beef producers. Waukaru faced these same challenges in 1988. In that year it took twice the number of acres to produce the same number of cattle. Therefore herd reduction became a necessity. Times have changed. Today’s Waukaru-bred female is designed to be much more efficient. These cattle simply require far less inputs for a far greater amount of output. The modern Waukaru female is designed to require less in both feedstuffs, quality of feed, and management. Turn them out, let them work for you. We are in a new era of beef production. Exciting times lie ahead with the rebuilding of the nation’s cowherd. Documented cattle will provide the greatest potential for profit, with less risk. As breeders of Shorthorn cattle, let us all realize that the industry is demanding maternal solutions to complex problems. The industry is demanding documented genetic choices. The industry is demanding cattle that will excel at their assigned job. Thank you for your interest in Waukaru. If we can be of any assistance to you in providing any additional information, to better understand our offering, please feel free to contact us, the sale manager or any of the sales staff at any time.

Polled Shorthorn and Durham Red Cattle Waukaru Farms, Inc. is a diversified family farming operation that began using registered Shorthorn bulls in 1902. From the early 1900’s through the 1940’s all three British beef breeds, Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn, grazed the sandhills and marsh ground at what at the time was named Waukarusa Ranch. Later Barry’s grandfather, Walter Jordan, determined that the Shorthorn cattle had distinct advantages: they were simpler to manage, more adaptable to various feed and fodder resources, and they lasted longer. Through selection and culling, Walter designed the nucleus of Waukaru that could thrive in various environments, required little management, and could convert grass and crop residue to meat and milk. As the years went by and new technologies emerged, we embraced these emerging tools as a way to make smarter and simpler decisions. Waukaru began performance testing and collecting carcass data in 1960, and has become a leader in the Shorthorn breed in data submission. The 1970’s brought the beef industry wide use of artificial insemination and then non-surgical embryo transfer. Waukaru was quick to employ these two great tools to help accomplish our goals. In 2003, planned matings between Waukaru’s elite donor females and the Red Angus breed’s most proven bulls laid the foundation of the Durham Red composite. Currently, Waukaru genetics can be found in forty of the fifty U.S. states, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, South Africa, and China.

The Cow Families that Built Waukaru The Minnie Tribe The Minnie Tribe has had a major impact at Waukaru. This line of cattle stems from Kenmar Minnie 25Z, a donor that was born in 1969 and came to Waukaru as a proven four-year-old in 1973 from Harvey Fulton’s Kenmar Farms of Manitoba, Canada. The Minnie line has always been the go-to family for power, substance, and predictable performance. Over their history, Minnies have been the maternal strength of countless sires here at Waukaru and in seven different countries around the world. Over the last four and a half decades, Minnies excel under intense selection pressure; they adapt, perform, and stay current. They are responsible for sire names like Gold Ship, Copper Deposit, and many more. Today, the family can provide a lower birthweight, moderate mature size option coupled with the explosive power that has become expected.

The Red Nan Group Red Nan brood cows are some of the most attractively designed, well balanced, sound structured females to be found. They have stayed true to their prepotent matriarch, Waukaru Red Nan 504, who was the first cow to enter embryo transfer at Waukaru. This line of cattle has been appreciated by cattlemen across the country; in fact, three daughters of Red Nan 504 all won three different PACE events, in the same week! Herd sires from the group have been utilized by some of the most influential stockmen in the business. Bulls like Gold Card 5042 and Orion 2047 are results of the Red Nans. Today, the Red Nans have maintained their symmetry and eye appeal, while simultaneously providing muscle and rapid conversion that enable them to remain in the forefront of everchanging industry demands.

The Rosewoods of Abilene The family of the Rosewoods has played a major role in the breed for well over a century. We identified this tier of females from Keith Laurer of Abilene, Kansas. The breeding objectives behind the KL prefix were similar to ours. As both programs identified new herd sires, a pattern of genetics developed. Because of this, the Rosewoods of Abilene have responded exceptionally well to our system. These are beefy, broody, foraging machines. They are honest, hard working cows that respond well to pressure. The Rosewoods were developed with a steady hand, without fad or fantasy. Herdsires like Patent 8161 and Gold Mine 2109 are great illustrations of the “real world traits” that the Rosewoods have mastered. Today they are driving forces of dependability and power, producing genetic answers to difficult production challenges.

The Legendary Lassies The Lassie name has been synonymous with “curve benders.” This group likes to excel at antagonistic traits. They can provide low birth with powerful growth and shortened gestation, direct calving ease and maternal calving ease, marbling and ribeye. The Lassie line stems from a female that was line bred to Nodak King’s Tradition from the Hilltop herd of Carvin and Gerald Guy, Veblen, SD. The Lassie females have a look that is unique, wide based, powerful, and sound. It continues to breed true, decades later. The Lassie family is noted with sires such as Coppertop 464 and Carnegie.

The Ruby Rose Dynasty The Ruby Rose family has been landing sale toppers and cattle that are in high demand. The Ruby Rose line transmits substance, power, and muscle in an attractive, predictable package. Discriminating cattlemen from around the continent have sought out the Ruby Rose family to serve as donors to provide shape, expression, and dimension.

The Influence of Ridgecrest Maria 4th The family lines of First Lady, Prima Donna, and Kiss all stem from Ridgecrest Maria 4th. This family not only has produced multiple champions, but more importantly reproduced predictably in a performance based schematic. Names like Primabella 804, Kiss 229, First Lady, Prima Donna 7102 and Kiss 8053 give credence to the claims that the Marias are fancy, attractive, and designed to be functional. This group of special ladies has proven time and again that being data driven does not have to come at the cost of balance and eye-appeal.

The Proper Prima Prima Donna 7102 is the base that produced the Primabella group. This line has maintained the symmetry and near perfect balance through the decades. Their genetics have been rewarded as being “front pasture kind” cattle in nearly every state and six countries.

The Kisses First Kiss was a full sister to Prima Donna 7102 that always had a slight advantage of power. As you follow through the generations, the Kiss name usually brings more shape and dimension with amazing eye appeal.

Selling Full Interest & Full Possession. Bred on MARB 7/21/13 to Waukaru Coppertop 464 x. Cows like Melita Rose 5021 don’t happen accidentally; it takes generations of selection for pertinent traits. Melita Rose 5021 has generated more dollars than any other female in the history of Waukaru. There are five sons of 5021 from the Waukaru herd recorded with the American Shorthorn Association. They have generated just under $200,000; most notable is Waukaru Patent 8161. Twelve sons of Waukaru Patent 8161 were sold at The Gathering 2013 for an average of $7,375. The demand for documented cattle that can convert, grow, and have muscle and reasonable birth weights and mature size will continue to expand. Brood matrons such as 5021 are integral to serve the breed in replicating the tools that the beef industry demands. For us to offer this female to the public, Waukaru has kept every daughter she has produced. It has been said that some donors produce a lot of eggs, some a lot of pregnancies; most importantly, Melita Rose 5021 produces a lot of dollars.

Waukaru will pay flush expenses and include semen from any bull in our herd bull battery. Red Nan 9043 has been in the making for a long time, decades. We selected Red Nan 9043 for our donor pen because she encompasses so many attributes simultaneously. Here is a female that addresses calving ease and birth weight, mature cow size, and udder design while keeping growth, muscle, and volume at optimum levels. Red Nan 9043 has posted a ratio of 111 for birth weight, 102 for 365 day weight, 103 for %IMF, and ranked first for post wean gain in her contemporary group. Her curve bending EPD’s place her in the top 20 percentile for $CEZ, and 10th percentile for both $F and $BMI of active dams. Breaking breeding antagonisms have become the norm for the Coppertop daughters, and Red Nan 9043 is from a proven lineage of real world genetics. She is a maternal sister to Waukaru Gold Card 5042, the third bull in breed history to be awarded the Pacer Performance Sire, and the youngest. She has brothers breeding cows in Oklahoma, Montana, Indiana, and Florida. Her first son was a member of our team of bulls at the 2012 NWSS, was second high selling bull in that years The Gathering, and gave his new owners, Jim and Stephanie Sneed of Missouri, a perfect calving season with no assists and an average birth weight of 82.75 pounds. This cow line has the unique ability to always stay current for the times, and adapt to industry trends. Open & ready to flush immediately.

Augusta 0081 is deep ribbed, easy fleshing and maternally designed. She fared better than most through last year’s drought with a consistently higher body condition score than her contemporaries. As a yearling, Augusta 0081 posted an adj. 365 day weight of 903 pounds with a ratio of 103, REA ratio of 102, and was a modest 5.9 frame. Augusta 0081 is no stranger to the flush pen; her last flush to Orion 2047 yielded 12 transferable embryos, and her ET calves by Patent 8161 to wean this fall will be highlights in next year’s bull sale. This pair of brood cows are full sibs to Waukaru Rambo 8606, a sire that sees heavy use here at Waukaru. They are also maternal sisters to Waukaru Gold Card 5042 x, the youngest Pacer Performance Sire. These two females are similarly big footed, heavy boned, wide structured, and stay in good flesh. Marion 9069 is the type of female that keeps a company turning a profit. She is long patterned, bold sprung, and sound in her skeleton and udder. It’s always hard to part with a Heather Rose female. This family consistently produces high quality, accountable, predictable cattle. Heather Rose yields amazing stats: a birth ratio of 106, weaning of 110 and yearling of 102. Her 2012 daughter by Waukaru Patent 8161 replicated the dam’s performance measures with a 106 birth ratio, 107 for weaning and 109 for yearling, and we’re depending on that daughter to replace the dam. 9202 ranks above the top 15% of active dams for BEPD and above the top 4% for all other growth and maternal traits. Polled. Due October to Waukaru Coppertop 464. Ruby Rose 8801 is sired by a full brother to Lot 1. Bodacious 5017 was the second high seller in The Gathering 2006 and was selected by Roster Charolais, SD. Ruby Rose 8801’s dam was the high seller in a previous Share the Harvest event and anchored the donor program at Hansberger Cattle Co., Colo. Like her sister selling as Lot 48, 8801 is a bold sprung, heavily constructed female that readily transmits muscle and efficient growth. Her 2012 bull is currently on test, and posted a birth ratio of 104 and weaning at 119.

Kiss 8803 is maternal sister to the high selling female in the 2011 Cow Power sale, Kiss 8053. 8053 is now a donor for Shadybrook Farms of Quebec, Canada. 8803 is built from the same mold as her famous family; this is a great patterned, big volume female that reaches above the top 20% of active dams for $CEZ, $F, and $BMI. The brood matrons such as 8803 that break breeding antagonisms always lead the pack. MARB

The Coppertop 464 females are proving themselves a sire group that brings in the big dollars. In fact, 12 daughters of Coppertop 464 produced bulls for The Gathering 2013; that set of bulls averaged $5,840! On a per acre basis, that Shorthorn bull crop is better that anything else you could grow! First Kiss 9023 is the type that generates profit; she is big centered, attractive, and has genetic predictors that are difficult to replicate. Flush Option: At the discretion of the new owner, First Kiss 9023 could remain here & enter our donor program for the coming fall and winter. Waukaru would cover all feed, maintenance & flush costs for one-half of the embryo production.

These three females are full sisters to Waukaru Orion 2047 x. Every once in a while a sire is born that is better suited for the day than can be described. Orion 2047 ET was born unassisted to a three-year-old half Shorthorn commercial cow and weighed 90 pounds. Very soon we knew that he would be elite among the 2012 bull crop. Orion 2047 weighed 742 pounds for his adj. 205 day, then continued to gain 3.99 pounds until his 365 day weight when he weighed 1348 pounds. In the yards at the National Western, the ASA staff measured Orion to be a 6.0 frame, and his scrotal measurement adjusted to 38.7 for a year of age. When he was scanned, his ribeye area was 17.8 square inches for a ratio of 110 and he had a %IMF of 3.63 for a ratio of 107. Orion 2047 froze semen the day after he left the yards at Denver, and is being used by Leemon Stock Farm, Leveldale, and Ruem Bros. all of Illinois, Cates Farms of Indiana, Horseshoe Creek of Saskatchewan, Canada, and Yamburgan Stud of Queensland, Australia. Red Nan 2035, 2037, and 3107 are important instruments for a breeder to replicate genetics that are demanded in tomorrow’s beef industry. All of these females perform at the level predicted by their EPD’s. This genetic package is predictable, marketable, and most importantly, profitable.

When we selected sale cattle from the replacement heifers, everyone agreed they had to be the very top. Kiss 2066 is from an elite group of cattle that starts small and grows rapidly. If you enter 2066’s growth and maternal EPD’s into the search function of the ASA website, only three other animals are equal or better: two of her paternal sisters, and a full brother who is breeding cows in Ohio. Kiss 2066 also has maternal brothers serving cows in Montana, Missouri, and Florida. To help ensure success in Waukaru’s relentless search of curve bending genetics, we will retain two full sisters to Kiss 2066.

It is exciting to see an entire flush of calves that are as similar phenotypically as these three young females. The predictability that has been bred in for generations to get three so similar speaks highly of their parents. All three are big bodied heifer calves that have tremendous shape over their rib and loin. They are stout hipped, big quartered, and have presence, eye appeal, and style. Take your pick; we can’t decide between them, but are confident that all three will be legendary.

Glossary & Use of Shorthorn EPDs and Dollar Value Traits Calving Ease Direct (CE, DIR) The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers is Calving Ease Direct. As the name implies, this measure predicts the ability of a sire to produce calves that come out easily, without assistance. Expressed as a percent of unassisted births, the more positive numbers are the more desirable. For example, a bull with a CE of -2.5 is expected to sire 4.0% more assisted births than a bull with a CE, DIR of +1.5 (1.5 plus -2.5 = 4.0). Put simply, if the bull with a +1.5 CE, DIR EPD sires 100 calves and 1 birth requires assistance, then the example bull should sire 5 calves that need assistance at birth. Calving Ease Maternal (MCE, DTRS) If you plan to retain daughters from a particular bull, then Calving Ease Maternal EPD becomes more of a priority. This measure often has an inverse relationship to Calving Ease Direct. Cattle breeding logic tells us that when calves come easier, the natural pelvic area of the females may also get smaller. As a result, daughters from a sire known for Calving Ease may be less desirable due to this antagonism. Maternal Calving Ease is basically one generation further than Calving Ease Direct. Expressed as a percent of unassisted births, CEM reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters that calve unassisted. As a result, a more positive number is more desirable. Although CE, DIR and CEM, DTRS values tend to be antagonistic, a bull that is positive for both CE and CEM should be given strong consideration if one wants to market bulls suitable for use on first-calf heifers and sell or retain replacement females that can calve on their own. Birth Weight (BW) This trait needs little introduction, but the emphasis on Birth Weight can be overdone. At the most basic level, Birth Weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease. For decades, the weight of a calf at birth was the only hard number collected by breeders to tell bull buyers what they could expect at calving time. Economically, over-selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. The most important figure is the number of live calves that hit the ground with no assistance from a ranch hand. Still, threshold values for BW are on the minds of many bull and female buyers. In the Shorthorn breed, bulls suitable for use on heifers need to be significantly less than breed average. Use BW EPD in conjunction with Calving Ease Direct (CE). Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone, and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weight and calving ease. Weaning Weight (WW) Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. By itself, Weaning Weight EPD has limited use, merely pounds of calves attributed to the sire or dam of interest. However, when used in conjunction with other traits (CEM, BW, YW, & Carcass), WW gets much more significant. Within the 2011 sire summary, the top 5% of the Shorthorn breed should wean calves approximately 24.7 lbs. heavier on average than the bottom 5% of the breed. More importantly, bulls within the sire summary that may have identical WW EPDs can be drastically different for traits like CE and Carcass Marbling. As a result, finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success. Milk The dairy industry measures the success of a cow in pounds of milk produced and the nutritional attributes or fat content of the milk. Research has shown that the nutritional quality of milk offered by a beef cow is just as important as the amount produced in generating heavier calves. Since beef cattle breeders don’t milk our cows, success is measured in pounds of calf attributed to milk at weaning. A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans the heaviest calf every year, does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf could be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of other environmental factors eliminated in the EPD calculation (age of dam, birth date, etc.). Shorthorn breed average Milk EPD (sires) is +2.1. In environments with severely limited feed resources, Milk EPD can be too high, having a negative impact on rebreeding rate. However, in most cases, keep moving Milk EPD in a positive direction. Total Maternal (TMat, TOTM) Mathematically, Total Maternal EPD is nothing more than ½ of WW plus Milk EPD. For example, the 2011 Sire Summary has breed average (sires) WW at +13.8 and Milk at +2.1. If you take ½ of 13.8 (6.9) and add 2.1, you land at breed average (sires) TMat (TOTM) of +9.0. This trait simplifies the process of selecting a bull to produce replacement females by using one number that expresses a cow’s ability to bring in a heavier calf. Yearling Weight (YW) Yearling Weight EPD has long been the “end all” measure of performance. However, single-trait selection for YW can lead to far more serious problems, especially at they relate to bottom-line profit. Mature size or frame score must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. In other words, a mature bull that weighs 2,700 pounds cannot naturally breed an 800-pound yearling heifer. As you select bulls that exceed breed average YW of +24.8, be careful of CE, BW, and WW. You may talk yourself into a very labor intensive calving season and more expensive feed bill. $ CEZ ($ Calving Ease) This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. This index is also a good measure of Shorthorn females’ ability to produce calving ease sires. Overemphasis of $CEZ may cause unwanted depression of weaning and yearling performance. $F ($ Feedlot) Similar to a Terminal Sire scenario, $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F. Over-selection may cause detrimental harm to longevity, reproductive efficiency, and fleshing ability. $BMI ($ British Maternal Index) As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Breed Average: *CE: -1.9 *MCE: -1.75 BW: 2.4 WW: 15.0 YW: 24.4 Milk: 2.2 *$CEZ: $4.49 *$F: $24.94 *$BMI: $21.71
