site context
The MBTA warehouse is located in the South End neighborhood just southeast of Washington street and is currently used as a massive parking lot and venue for weekend events. The existing architecture and location of the site creates great opportunities for connectivity, job opportunities, and neighborhood revitalization.
city blocks
SOWA Market
The MBTA warehouse site is an eyesore for its surrounding residents and is an underutilized space that is not pedestrian friendly. Current residents would like to see the patch of land revitalized into a functional neighborhood space that fits their needs. The design calls for a more pedestrian friendly circulation system that incorporates green space with lush vegetation. A mixed use development is desired to create more access to amenities and flexibility within the community.

Motion: the action or process of moving or of changing place or position. A community node, that will convey motion and speed through the study of formal and informal forces of cultures colliding, creates the basis for this design. Motion created by the subway lines, the city street grids, main highways, pedestrian routes and positive/negative built environment come together to diagram the everyday speed and movement of the residents of Boston, Massachusetts. Using the diagrams led to the construction of a model and an overall abstract version of motion that guided the way to schematic design.

texas urban redevelopment / dallas, senior project (spring 2012)
site context
The 26 acre site located just south of downtown Dallas has been abandoned for several years leaving the historic architecture to deteriorate and has become a popular area for the homeless. The site has many opportunities and connections to downtown Dallas’ business, art and entertainment districts. The proposed design calls for a complete restoration of institutional and historic structures and the implementation of a mixed use development that will allow business and social opportunities for residents and day time users. Within the development, bike lanes, sidewalks, and crosswalks are added to make the environment pedestrian friendly and promote multiple types of transportation.
Downtown Dallas
To attract users from surrounding businesses, restaurants/bars, greenspace/recreation, and retail space has been added and the overall aesthetic quality of the development has been significantly improved. Sustainability and environmental impact was also taken into consideration and has been implemented appropriately through runoff collection, UV collection, roof gardens, and low water use planting.

piazza garibaldi /
castiglion fiorentino, italy study abroad (fall 2011)
Piazza Garibaldi is currently an under utilized urban space that is mainly used as a parking lot for buses, cars, trucks, motorcycles and other small vehicles. Besides the Friday market and the annual community events, Piazza Garibaldi is typically vacant and is an eye sore to the community. Residents would like to take advantage of the piazza not just for weekly or annual events but as an attraction to display the town’s history and unity. Besides the 25’ to 30’ obelisk located in the center of the western half of the piazza, this area is made up of strictly asphalt and concrete.
2
The current site lacks vegetation, greenspace and overall functionality within the current circulation system. The project called for a connection to the community and a focus on site sustainability that would provide the space with more appeal. This site also needs to be flexible to compensate for weekly and annual events.

site plan p The proposed design is consistent with the existing natural and man-made elements on the site and throughout the town of Castiglion Fiorentino and is a much more flexible space regarding community events and circulation. The space incorporates greenspace, functional circulation, and a more attractive design that will enhance the quality and use of the piazza. While taking advantage of existing structures, archaelogical site and topography, the implementation of additional vegetation, statuary and coffee/pastry shop also attracts users to the space.

community events Throughout the year Piazza Garibaldi is used extensively for various events and needs to be functional not just during the usual weekday, but during these events as well. Once a year an athletic competition (Palio dei Rioni) is held in the piazza.

This location map shows the layout of the horse track and the extra seating that is set up for the Palio dei Rioni. The design of this area allows for extra removable seating to be set up during large community events and creates efficient pedestrian circulation when these events are held. The design also allows for easy barrier and structure set up associated with community events.

This is the most accessible area for pedestrians and provides a comfortable setting for non-traditional business to occur.

The Villa Lago residence is a project that derived a lot of its form from Italian villa design. The “Italian Renaissance” design is mostly symmetrical and filled with water fountains, statuary and compact planting. The goal for this residence is to bring pleasure to the user and to have the ability to enjoy the surrounding landscapes sights, sounds and smells. The site which is located on Crystal Bay, has been preserved appropriately and has required buffer zones along ecological systems such as a stream that includes a water fall and a small wetland surrounded by forest.

The residence has its very own vineyard that is watered from recycled gray water from the main and guest house. The main house has two levels of patios that provide plenty of covered and uncovered seating and stunning views into Crystal Bay.

texas professional experience / spring, landology (summer 2012) During my internship at Landology, I had the opportunity to be a part of several types of projects. Park design is Landology’s main focus, but the company also took part in commercial and residential design. Landology consisted of only two employees, but works with entities such as: The Woodlands Township, Gensler, Brickman, Black Forest Realty, etc. Throughout my internship at Landology I also interacted with the clients and was present in project meetings with these clients.

construction details / italy study abroad (fall 2011) Throughout the study abroad trip to Italy, we developed construction details of historic paving patterns, benches, stairs, railings and walls. Measurements were taken on site of each detail and drawn by hand to illustrate what materials and dimensions were used to construct each object. Each detail is unique and a lot of variables were unknown, these variables were substituted by the professor to ensure a complete and accurate product.

baltimore sports complex /
storm drains construction (spring 2011)
drainage area map
This particular project is centered around storm water runoff and an efficient design that will collect runoff from a 100 year storm. Four drainage areas have been identified throughout the complex and have been calculated to determine the amount of runoff in cubic feet per second and the area needed for required storage. The entire site has been graded to accommodate the levels of runoff from all four drainage areas to a system of piping and a bio retention pond. After the amount of required storage is calculated, pipe and pond sizing is then determined to allow enough storage for a 100 year storm. The pond has been designed to hold a specific amount of water throughout the year for aesthetic reasons and to also account for the 100 year storm. The bio retention has been shaped to create interest and includes a pedestrian bridge and sidewalk that connects itself to the rest of the sports complex.
