Former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognizes Georgia Tech as an institution with a “longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion” during his Commencement speech. Alternative Media Access Center Director Christopher Lee and Institute Diversity Associate Vice President Julie Ancis receive a U.S. Department of Education First in the World Grant to expand access of digital content for students with print-related disabilities at minority-serving institutions.

Even though privacy and safety are often concerns, it is important to raise awareness about programs like Trans 101 to continue building a stronger trans community and inclusive culture at Georgia Tech.

UNITS AND INITIATIVES

AT A GLANCE Institute Diversity is comprised of the following units and initiatives addressing the needs of historically underrepresented groups within the Georgia Tech community: ADVANCE Program • Works with academic administration and faculty to promote an integrated institutional approach to the advancement of women and minorities in academia. Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion Focuses on the recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented minority and women students and houses the following units and initiatives: • Office of Hispanic Initiatives (OHI) – Provides programs and pathways to success for the Hispanic/Latino community, including current and prospective students and their families, faculty, and staff. • OMED: Educational Services – Provides programs and pathways to success for traditionally underrepresented students: AfricanAmerican, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, and Multiracial. • Outreach Initiative – Assists Georgia Tech in discovering and developing our future pool of talented and diverse students. • Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology (WST)’s Student Partnerships – Develops initiatives and collaborations that promote faculty and student interaction around research and practices in STEM.

LGBTQIA Resource Center • Provides programs, events, and resources for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and ally community, including students, faculty, and staff. Research and Institute Collaborations • Develops funding proposals directed to local, state, and federal agencies, foundations, and corporations to achieve Georgia Tech’s vision for inclusive excellence. Staff Diversity, Inclusion, and Engagement • Offers programs, events, and resources for staff to guide cultural transformation. Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology (WST)’s Faculty Partnerships • Establishes and expands collaboration among faculty through research and programming initiatives.

At the LGBTQIA Resource Center’s annual Lavender Graduation and Lavender Awards, graduating students stand beside Student Life Vice President and Dean of Students John Stein (front left) and Institute Diversity Vice President Archie Ervin (front right). Student participation has increased significantly since Lavender Graduation was introduced to the campus community several years ago. Institute Diversity, in collaboration with Georgia Tech’s ADVANCE Program, offers workshops for faculty focused on implicit bias and perceptions of competence. An overwhelming majority (88 percent) of participants would recommend the workshop to colleagues.

OMED: Educational Services’ Challenge, a five-week intensive summer program, helps prepare incoming freshmen for a successful college career, both academically and socially. “Because of the Challenge program, I met some of my closest friends and earned a 4.0 GPA during my first semester at Georgia Tech.” - Kyle Woumn, undergraduate student, School of Computer Science

Staff Diversity, Inclusion, and Engagement offers six Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) at Georgia Tech to provide forums where likeminded employees can enhance their employment experience. There are more than 1,400 faculty and staff members of the ERGs.

Residents in the WST Learning Community participate in monthly dinner conversations focusing on academic and career development topics. More than 1,200 young women have lived in the WST Learning Community since 2000 and remain connected as an online alumnae community.Â

Goizueta Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship recipients gather to be honored at an annual reception, hosted by OHI. More than 200 Hispanic/Latino students have been supported by Goizueta Foundation Scholarships and Fellowships to date.

• MLK Lecture – Features a renowned thought leader who addresses the ongoing global struggle for social justice, social courage, and sustainable social change during Georgia Tech’s commemoration of the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. • Black History Month Lecture – Presents a renowned thought leader who discusses culture and climate on college campuses during Black History Month. • WST Distinguished Lecturer – Honors an outstanding contributor to research, practices, and/or policy on women, science, and technology. • Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture – Hosts a renowned thought leader who spotlights the contributions of Hispanics/ Latinos in science and society during Hispanic Heritage Month. Diversity Symposium

• Features a variety of lectures, panels, and workshops on building and sustaining an inclusive campus community.

EXCELLENCE Institute Diversity offers the following award opportunities to recognize campus community members who are achieving academic and inclusive excellence: • Diversity Champion Awards – Honors faculty, staff, students, and units who actively demonstrate and positively promote the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the campus community. • Faces of Inclusive Excellence – Recognizes faculty, staff, and students who have distinguished themselves in research, teaching, and/or service, and are committed to making Tech among the most highly respected technology-focused learning institutions in the world. • Lavender Awards – Recognizes faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have made Tech a safer and more inclusive environment for the LGBTQIA community. • Tower Awards – Celebrates the academic achievements of underrepresented minority and women students.
