Pushing forward: This book, aside from displaying the body of work that I have spent the past four years bringing to life, represents my ambition, my passion, and my goals. Raised in south Georgia, I never could have possibly imagined all the things I would learn through my schooling. I consider education a gift and something that I have been very fortunate to receive. After obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the Georgia Institute of Technology, I was unsure of what to do next. Coincidentally, my father who had long suffered from an aggressive brain tumor, finally passed away. Determined to keep a positive attitude and be hard-working, efficient, and increasingly ambitious, I decided to leave my home in Georgia and pursue my Master's in Graphic Design in San Francisco. Words cannot express how happy I am that I made that decision. This book isn't a final crescendo; it's an energetic interlude.

Intent: To design a book sourcing information from a medical text that yielded data for information graphics and comparisons. Inspiration: Growing up in a small town, many of my friends became involved with crowds that were known for habitual drug use. I watched as several friends seemed to "disappear" right before my eyes. Since then, I have tried to promote a healthy lifestyle and preach moderation and harm reduction. I wanted to use this book to focus on the problem of drug addiction and abuse at its root. Solution: I found a text relating to the surge of opiate use in the United States in the 1960s. It was incredibly interesting to me and though it provided information about geographical, social, and financial factors influencing the rise in drugs, I was instantly enthralled with the material. This text was reinterpreted and displayed in a manner that would be easier to comprehend than a typical medical report.

Intent: To extend the existing Knoll identity into urban gardening products while promoting a return to self-sufficiency, sustainability, and community. Inspiration: The influence of this project can only be attributed to my mother, who spent years gardening her own herbs and spices so that my sisters and I could taste some of the finest food ever cooked east of the Mississippi. Solution: Adhering to the existing Knoll identity, a manual was created delineating Knoll’s new view on urban gardening principles. The book also included information regarding protection of the biosphere, sustainable use of natural resources, and environmental restoration, as well as tips concerning soil, pests, and growing your own herbs. To that end, seven herbs were selected and packaged as the Knoll Herbs line. Additionally, a seedling character was developed in an effort to involve children and teach them about urban gardening.

Intent: To use any means necessary to convert the information from an urban biking company's internet blog, entitled How to Avoid the Bummer Life into a physical, tangible, comprehensible format. Inspiration: This project was organized and developed through Michael Sainato of the Academy of Art and Tim Parr of Swobo, a San Francisco-based urban biking company. Swobo specializes in urban bicycles, men's and women's athletic attire, and a myriad of other urban biking necessities. Tim approached Michael with the idea to convert Swobo's internet blog into a physical form and our class gladly accepted the challenge. Solution: Swobo has since created other blogs and forums, but their main online vessel at the time of this project was How to Avoid the Bummer Life. The content on the blog was quite diverse, featuring comments and suggestions from Swobo team members as well as enthusiasts who simply stumbled upon the blog from the Swobo website. Most of the blog entries were hilarious to read and dealt with a broad range of topics from bacon and bars to biking events and other gatherings. I selected specific blog postings that related to "avoiding the bummer life" in certain geographic areas of the United States. Essentially, the blog's content was broken down, reorganized, and transformed into a set of small books.

FEAR TO HELP YOUR FINISH principle vehicle A N I M AT I O N dimensions 680 x 480 px typefaces SLANT CHOLLA
Intent: To inspire FUEL.tv’s younger individuals to be more physically active and to take healthy risks in life while promoting the importance of winning attitudes. Inspiration: This project was heavily influenced by the extreme sports culture. In an attempt to interest and involve the audience, motion graphics were combined with the music of DJ Shadow to create two alluring animated television interstitials. Solution: Two themes were designed; the first–to represent the fear that is common before a sporting event, and the second–to convey the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the finish. Because of the involvement of the concept of time, motion graphics were utilized. These short segments were then converted into small flip books. The content and graphics used in the project were compiled onto a DVD that would make each animation’s elements available to the consumer. The FUEL.tv Experience campaign would feature interviews with famous action sports athletes to stress the importance of overcoming fears and winning attitudes while exhibiting humility during success.

PHOTOCOPYING DISINTEGRATION principle vehicle BOOK dimensions 9" x 12"
Intent: To artfully capture the life of a simple black one-inch square over the course of repeated photocopying until its disappearance into tones of gray and white. Inspiration: I have always been inspired by pieces of art that depict a change in some way. I also have an affinity for motion graphics, so I saw this project as an opportunity to create something extremely simple yet intriguing. Solution: A one-inch black square was printed onto a single sheet of paper. This sheet was photocopied and enlarged by 200% over and over again. The initial changes were slight but after several rounds of photocopying and enlargement, the square began to lose its shape and give way to random forms and splotches. These shapes varied in tone and continued to disintegrate as the page was photocopied further. Finally the pages were all folded in half and bound together, tracking the life of the square from black to white.

THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE principle vehicle BOOK dimensions 6" x 9" typeface H E LV E T I CA N E U E
Intent: To design a book detailing the cycle of domestic violence, from the honeymoon phase through the battering incident. Inspiration: I was lucky enough to grow up with a very loving family, but I've always identified with those who have experienced different forms of abuse. I wanted to use this project to research and understand the cycle of abuse, with the hope that I could help people identify patterns that may have a tendency to create negative impacts in their lives. Solution: I conducted research through several domestic violence associations and requested reports from helpful contacts that I established. A large portion of this course was spent gathering different perspectives and points of view from a diverse crowd of individuals. Additionally, the concept was studied from the angles of economic impact, social impact, and political impact, among many others. I also used this book as a means to convey the different forms of abuse, from physical and sexual to mental and verbal.

TWELVE HOURS OF TERROR principle vehicle BOOK dimensions 6" x 8" typefaces DIRTY HEADLINE DIN GA R A M O N D
Intent: To design a film festival commemorating the works of John Carpenter and focusing on underlying themes in his horror and sci-fi films. I n s p i r a t i o n : I fell in love with classic horror films the first time I saw John Carpenter’s Halloween. I was inspired by its simplicity and the fact that it was produced in 1978 on an incredibly cheap budget of only $300,000. I wanted to use this project as an opportunity to pay homage to the man behind the Michael Myers mask that had scared me so much as a child. I enjoyed the project even more when it took me on several road trips to find filming locations in California. Solution: A film festival needs an intriguing title to draw in its audience. When Donald Pleasance’s character Dr. Loomis knows that Michael Myers has returned to Haddonfield, he warns the sheriff in Halloween, “Death has come to your little town.” The festival was set at the Rialto Theatre in South Pasadena, California, just a few blocks away from many of the filming locations of the movie. I visited the actual location and was able to take on-site photography there, as well as in Point Reyes, California, one of the filming locations of John Carpenter's The Fog.

SEX AND SURFBOARD WAX principle vehicle BOOK dimensions 9" x 12" typefaces SOUVENIR AV E N I R
Intent: To redesign the Sex Wax identity to appeal to a wider, more youthful, and progressive audience while extending the brand into uncharted territories. Inspiration: Always a fan of coastal living and sea life, I grew up surfing in the Florida ocean and water-skiing in the rivers of Georgia. I’d always used Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax on my boards and noticed that many people shared the same affinity. The existing challenge was to create an identity that appealed to a new demographic without losing the faithfulness of Sex Wax veterans. Solution: There are four types of Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax used for surfing: original Sex Wax, Quick Humps, Really Tacky, and Navel Wax for bodyboarding. After redesigning the Sex Wax logo by hand and incorporating aquatic characteristics, the brand was separated into two distinct entities, Sex Wax: nice and Sex Wax: naughty. The Sex Wax: nice identity carried all surf-related collateral, while Sex Wax: naughty extended into the realm of adult lubricants, condoms, and massage oils.

Intent: To design a graphic interpretation of Martin Luther King’s famous speech. Inspiration: Because Martin Luther’s speech has always been referred to as being so moving and influential, I wanted to research the style behind it. I planned to use my graphic design skills to map out the speech visually to be better understood. Solution: After thorough research, I was able to find a linguistic analysis of the famous speech that emphasized all the different writing styles and techniques that were utilized. I was then able to reinterpret the speech and create informational graphics depicting how Dr. King used repetition, biblical references, and alliteration to make his speech one of the most powerful of all time.

I n t e n t : To design a brand guidelines manual for Local, a casual and relaxed restaurant in the Rincon Hill district of San Francsico, California. I n s p i ra t i o n : This project was completed under the direction of John Gordon, a designer at DDB San Francisco. The inspiration behind the general look and feel for Local sprung from the idea of a non-pretentious neighborhood hangout. John created graphics and a color scheme for the project. His illustrations were fun and friendly and I was excited when asked to compile the existing work. Solution: A book detailing the identity standards for the Local restaurant was created using and manipulating existing graphic elements. The book utilized newsprint pages to display the main identity followed by white pages used to show applications and extensions of the brand.

Intent: To design a Flash site that would popularize new genres of music from all areas of the globe while providing artist information and sample tracks. Inspiration: This project was completed in a course focusing on digital design. I wanted to create something that would help people learn about music and its origins. I have always been heavily influenced by all types of music throughout my life, so I wanted to impress that on others. Solution: Once the dimensions of the site were selected, a world map was created with white strokes lines. This was placed on a green background and served as the central graphic of the website. Users could navigate using the vertical tabs as they were programmed to slide across the screen. Additional content would then pop-up into the frame providing details, information, images, and sounds.

Intent: To collect an urban artifact in the city of San Francisco and find a way to represent all of its information in a clear and interesting manner. Inspiration: This project was completed in an information design course I took toward the end of my time at the Academy. Because of my love for music, I chose to seek out a music-inspired artifact to study. Solution: Probably because of the fact that San Francisco has a coveted nightlife scene, the artifacts I collected were club and event flyers. This ended up being helpful visual research for my thesis project, but the information collected from the flyers related to the event name, location, performers, duration, genres of music represented, and graphic styles. Additionally, this information was compared against the flyer's origin. Information graphics were used to deduce which districts of San Francisco promoted the most parties, what type of music was being played there, and how far a person would have to travel from flyer origin to event location.

What is a graduate thesis project? A thesis project for a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design is driven by passion and excitement. It allows the designer to address a topic that is unique to their own interests and goals. It is an opportunity to deeply explore one subject and determine how design can transcend expectations, encourage communication, and become a force for change. Conceptual design, extensive research, and thoughtful analysis are combined to create a compelling body of work that encompasses the essence of the topic. Projects are both visual and narrative in nature and reflect a designer's ability to address numerous facets of one subject matter while weaving a comprehensive storyline throughout. What is my thesis project? My thesis project, named the xstatic experience, is a promotional identity that highlights and advocates the positive aspects of the clubbing scene. The identity's first initiative takes form in the creation of a music festival and conference experience–one determined to unify a progressive, eclectic crowd in positivity and physical well-being. The xstatic identity serves to create a safe learning environment, generate a love of new music, and stress the benefits of an active lifestyle. A positive attitude increases efficiency and is necessary for optimal productivity. The identity affirms that inspiration is the place where the heart and the mind are connected.

UP NEXT
Where am I headed? After living in San Francisco for five years, I'm excited to begin my career as a designer. I hope to stay in the city for a few more years while gaining experience and winding down after the rush of grad school. Eventually, when the opportunity presents itself, I plan to move to southern California and aspire to become involved with a motion graphics firm. I'm ready for warmer weather, surfing, eating seafood, and being out in the sun. What are my future plans? I don't know that my educational track will necessarily come to a close with my Master's degree. I've always had hopes of owning my own company, so a degree in Business Administration, Marketing, or Management may someday be in my future. However, I plan to learn and grow as much as possible and I enter the field with success as my top priority.
