Hello, My name is Stephen Scanlan and I am writing to you to apply for a summer internship within your practice. To give you a little background on me, I am currently in the two years master's program at Carleton University. I am originally from Toronto but have been living here in Ottawa for the past six years. I have had the opportunity to work at a variety of architectural, landscape, and engineering practices with over three years of experience. Currently and along with my studies, I am working part-time for a landscape architecture firm based out of Toronto. Our work specializes in terrace upgrades for luxury condominium units. Being a part of a start-up organization and a staff of three, I am extremely confident and comfortable with the development, construction, and management of our projects. To list a variety of my skills. I am proficient in most architectural programs like CAD, Sketch-up, Rhino, and Revit. I am also familiar with the latest architectural render programs such as Enscape, Twin-motion, and V-Ray. I have strong graphic and video skills working with the adobe suite of photoshop, illustrator, Premier, and after-effects. I am more than able to create plans, sections, renders, detail drawings, diagrammatic planning using these respected programs. As well, my current employment uses mostly BIM program Revit, in which I hold high proficiency. Alongside my work and studies, I also know python scripting and the in-house Revit program dynamo. I have created a series of scripts ranging in building form design and floor pattern design. Working with the ability of design optimization and using the coding program python, I want to further this knowledge within the creation of construction drawings and schedules. Specifically using Microsoft excel, I am aiming to learn more about minimizing the amount of work required to create material orders and construction schedules. This in turn I hope can provide new opportunities and libraries within your firm's office, while making me a strong candidate. Lastly, I also hold an interest in real estate and urban planning. During the summer of 2021, I ventured with a group of young professionals in purchasing a multi-unit residential building in Sudbury Ontario. The team and I are focused on keeping the current buildings while adapting new renovations and additions to our projects. Later ventures might impose future development but currently, we are organizing finances and structures to be sustainable and nonimpactful to the current demographic. The knowledge that I have gained is very fundamental but I hope that it will guide me into future understandings of building construction and development. Please find attached a copy of my resume and portfolio to this letter. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me through my email at stevie.scanlan@rogers.com or through my cell phone at 416-272-2185. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and looking forward to hearing back. Regards, Stephen Scanlan B.Arch, M.Arch (Candidate)

Forestry Research Centre Leave those Trees alone! The project explores Canada’s history within the logging industry and its displacement of indigenous cultures, environmental concerns, and landscape sustainability. Using the old Logging road and bridges as the central axis of the project. The Design fosters the inherent overgrowth of the site. Rather then stripping and rebuilding, the landscape design and architectural design coordinates itself within the existing topography. Acting as a sapling nursery the project undertakes sustainable measures within its design to maximize its energy efficiency.

COVID-STACKED!
The drawing represents an illustrated design concept for a COVID-19 vaccine distribution Centre. Beginning with the sub terrain space, in order to accommodate the intensive cooling procedure the vaccine requires the design to store all vaccines below grade. The Structure is held together using three systems; a thin column grid, a steel framed glass flooring, and repetitive insulated cement structure. Patrons lineup and assemble to receive their COVID- 19 Vaccine. Space is divided based on age range.Older generations receive vaccines lower to the surface while young adults acquire it higher objectively spreading the population out. Inside each vaccine distribution structure there are a series of staggered insertion desks, proper vertical and horizontal air circulation, as well a universal vaccine recycling system. As the virus spreads best within dense indoor space the idea for the concept is to maximize the space both vertically and horizontally within a subject area. The structure is able to change form depending on area population size.
SUDBURY WARMING HUT WINTER 2016 Studio Project - Time of completion: 4 months
This project is a design build installition for the yearly Ramsey Lake Skating path located in Sudbury Ontario. The Project was designed and build in a spam of 4 months working in teams of 10. Through Exploration of wood Joinery and connection, the project illustrated the ability to push a material to its limits. With over 250 hand chiselled wood joints the project expresses both welcoming and relaxing emotions onto the participant. The project was completed in first year. So all Architectural drawings are drawn using standard drafting techniques and traditions

Warp & Weft “In weaving, the weft of a piece of cloth is the threads which are passed sideways across the other threads...”
The objective of this studio was to develop a series of housing blocks and blocks and developments along Carling avenue. Following a simple design approach, the projects main catalyst was to create a series of row blocks perpendicular to Carling. Then by tying each block together, the buildings would be bridged with a series of residential bridges. The building that this project will outline rests on Carling and Clyde street. The buildings main purpose and function is to initially give back to the existing community. This project explores the use of mix used space while applying dense housing typologies for all ages, and social wealth status. Key features to the project are the combination of an active community center where residence have sports and recreation space, an active library, and day care. Apart from the first two floors of residential space, the buildings holds a series of townhouses running along the top of the building. These Town homes can accommodate a full family of five. Other key aspects to the project are the repetitive brick facade along all orientations. As the project is centrally focused around the existing community, brick was the main material of choice as many of the surrounding buildings are decorated in it. The Building fits the identity of the weft as it the residential program winds around and stitches the mixed use community center.
Shown below is a master plan outlining the surrounding context and plan development. As can be seen from plan view that the development shows the exploration of weaving in between building blocks that creates a compound of interconnected spaces. Key notes to the project are the vast amount of green space.
Context Map
Dining Retail Grocery
As can been seen from the outlined diagrams follow the design pattern of weaving and vertical stacking. Some outlines to the master plan that may have been overlooked are the vast amount of exterior space. The idea behind this function was to create a wide range of bio diverse outdoor activity. From a central market square to an urban lifted park, the development emphasizes maximizing space. In following a d esign a pproach that organizes space and program to be divided through vertical difference, the considerations were taken a step further in reference the individual housing block.
Here, it begins to look at the overall form ofthe housing block building. Following basic push and pull movements, the building allows multidisciplinary function to organize its space. The building is divided into 2 central programs of public and private. Both the ground floor and building core are dedicated to serve as an active C ommunity Centre that includes a libary, daycare and community centre Surrounding the core the building the follows a simple wrapped housing scheme. Range in unit size varies from 1 bed rooms to large 4 bedroom towns. The building itself is a microorganism of mixed use and growth.
Residential Floor Plan
The Building is meant to act in self function but in direct function toward overall development. When addressing housing, espically in regards to de housing structuresArchitects and Planners neglect social and communial due to many budget and development issues. This project aims to adress the issue of lack of public and communial space. The Project is best sitaut to lower income families as where they can use the conivnces of the gym and daycare facility.

AN ONTARIO FOLLY A Study of Water and Its reaction to Temperature
canada as a nation holds an exponential amount of fresh water marking over 50% of the worlds supplies. majority of which lying amongst the 5 great lakes (superior, ontario, erie, huron, and michigan.) the project that is being proposed is a large lifted water pavilion that sits within a small bay of lake huron. the pavilion is set to connect hikers and participants embarking on the many day bruce trail. the trail holds many great views and vistas of canada’s wild shores. inside the pavilion it breaks down each state of water and explores each characteristic and quality they have. they are solid, liquid and gas. the pavilion is set to enhance the knowledge of this precious compound and why its roll within our world is vital towards not only ourself ut the entire natural world.

this detail drawing is an exhibit of the first phase and stage of water. the vapour stage represents a room that inhabits the beauty and aw of water. the room encapsulates the patron in a large cloud of steam. the sensory feeling behind the room will calm the patron when entering and press self meditation and reflec- tion while inhabiting the space. the angular basin is a multi purposed architectural feature where it one holds water with the pavilion and provides sitting and resting space for the patron. along the right side of the drawing it outlines a property line break within the space. this rather then being a literal representa- tion is a symbolic form where passing through represents the passing into a new environment.

For - With Making a Scene
In collaboration With Dark-Matter University (Jelisa Blumberg, and Curry Hackett) The For- With project, is a six week studio that employs and legitimizes Black material culture to reveal emergent strategies for shaping spaces of care and maintenance. A series of improvisational exercises will take cues from cultural methods of the Modern African Diaspora, and invite students to discover unrecognized patterns and challenge traditions of ego and single-party authorship in the design discipline. These exercises will inform a large-scale urban case study in Baltimore, MD, USA, intended to encourage collective–individual exchange amongst students, while working to promote the agency of marginalized publics.
Film Real
From detail analysis of selective readings and design mediums of film, diagrams, drawings, and sketches the project aimed to portray a detailed analysis of an outsiders perspective of green-mount avenue a central road in the downtown of Baltimore. Working in group work, and using collaborative program figma, a set film was developed aimed to bring to live the lived experience within Baltimore. Using handmade models, stop animation, and selective sounds the short film eludes to the live of green-mount avenue. Along with the film, a oblique/plan drawing of the street is presented to outline the development of the film.
