Motoring Ahead £1.7m Vehicle Workshop development for Leicester College

On Site £5.4m contract to develop Oxford Homes and Community Centre

Stepnell Motors Ahead with £1.7m Vehicle Workshop “We’re excited to be working with Leicester College on this state of the art vehicle workshop which will further enhance its already excellent teaching facilities. Our team has solid expertise in the delivery of highquality educational buildings providing learners and staff with the best possible teaching environment.” David Brill – Design and Build Director

Construction work has just started on the modern single-storey teaching facility at the further education college’s Abbey Park Campus in Leicester city centre. The leading-edge facility will cater for the growing numbers of learners signing up for motor vehicle engineering courses at the College, which is one of the UK’s largest further education institutions Designed by Leicester-based Moss Architecture, the building will also be the first phase of the College’s new vocational Skills Village development. The new single-storey motor vehicle workshop will incorporate two classrooms and extensive practical facilities for both cars and motorcycles. The steel-framed building, due for completion in summer 2015, will provide 600 m2 of workshop space with facilities for up to 80 learners at one time. Modern and contemporary in design, the front of the building includes a large, arched feature window.

“The Motor Vehicle Engineering Centre is the first phase development of Leicester College’s Skills Village. The new building will allow the College to accommodate the growing demand for motor vehicle training within Leicester and the wider region. The building also represents the investment and importance that Leicester College and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) place on delivering exceptional training facilities for the engineering sector.” Jim Bowditch, Director of Estates and Campus Services

And the award goes to.... Stepnell proposed a care home concept called StepCare, which scooped up an award at the Annual NFB Awards 2014. Stepnell also received an Award for Craftsmanship by the Leicestershire Joint Consultative Committee for the Building Industry (LJCC) for the Denton House Scheme at Loughborough Grammar School delivered by our Grantham team. Earlier this year, Aylesbury Vale District Council awarded Stepnell a 'Commended' Design award for the new Music School at Stowe School.

homes and a state of the art community and sports centre set for completion in December 2015 The scheme will create a brand-new four-storey mansion block of 28 one and two bedroom apartments: 15 affordable homes and 13 properties for private sale. Homes are positioned either side of a central ‘winter garden’ – an external covered walkway beneath a glass and aluminium apex roof – which will provide more daylight for residents and create a social community space where they can meet and interact. All homes will meet high standards for environmental performance, achieving Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, with sustainable

Next to the mansion block, will be a modern three storey community centre with ground floor facilities including a community café, shared community space, reception area, kitchen, bar and changing facilities. The first floor will feature a multiuse hall, committee room, computer room and external terrace while the second floor will house three meeting rooms. The community centre is designed for a range of uses including social occasions, sports events and conferences. It will also be built to exacting sustainability criteria, achieving the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard and incorporating sustainable technology

such as an air source heat pump and heat recovery ventilation. Photovoltaic solar panels on the roof will enable it to generate around ten per cent of its energy requirements. The project also includes the creation of a new wetland area and pond for great crested newts at the site. As part of its commitment to providing support for community organisations, Stepnell has pledged to work with local schools and Oxford Brookes University throughout the construction programme, arranging events such as site visits, work experience opportunities and other activities for students.
