To meet the diverse needs of our communities, the North Vancouver School District offers a variety of Kindergarten programs, in addition to the standard half-day program. Our Kindergarten programs follow the B.C. curriculum and bring together our youngest learners for self-initiated and teacherled activities, which support the development of cooperative, engaged, and thoughtful students through play-based learning.

Kindergarten Programs
In the North Vancouver School District, we believe that Kindergarten is more than an introduction to school. Kindergarten provides students with opportunities to explore their curiosity about the world around them and nurture their own abilities to learn new things. The learning environment of our Kindergarten classrooms promotes school readiness by encouraging the social, emotional, physical, verbal and academic development of children in a safe and welcoming environment.

InDesign type finetuning options > Doing tables — you have two options: 1) use tab stops and paragraph rules ... fine for simple tabular text, such as a Table of Contents, 2-column tabular data (e.g. consisting of descriptive text across from numbers, as in an annual report) 2) use InDesign tables ... best if you have complex tables, or are receiving tables in Word or Excel spreadsheets from clients, want to re-design them but leave the table cells, rows, columns, headers intact
< 11 >
InDesign tables > 1) using tab stops and paragraph rules To align the numbers in the table on the right, make sure that the tab you’ve created (it has to be a real tab in your tab menu, not the default tab stop that occurs every 0.5 inches) is a right-align tab stop. 1. select your content 2. go to Type > Tabs. The Tabs palette will appear 3. line up the Tabs palette at left with your left text box edge so you can see where you’re placing your tab stops, also pull it out on the right
< 12 >
InDesign tables > 1) using tab stops and paragraph rules 4. Click anywhere on the ruler in the Tabs palette and you will see it puts in a left-align tab by default, highlight that tab stop and change it to a rightalign tab stop by clicking on the little right-align arrow icon in the little menu just above the ruler.
in your text by turning on “Show Hidden Characters” under the Type menu.
7. Finally, when you’ve got your rightalign tab where you want it, go to the “Leader” box in that same menu, and you can insert a character there, such as a period. That will place that 5. Drag that tab stop into the right location along your ruler, close to the character repeatedly between your text and the page number. I often right edge of your text box. go in and select just those periods 6. Make sure that you have tabbed after I’ve inserted them as a leader, the correct number of tab stops and make them smaller and also between your content text and the add tracking to space them apart or page number — now your page closer because I find they’re often numbers should align on the right. too big. You see any superfluous tab stops < 13 >
InDesign tables > 1) using tab stops and paragraph rules To add a paragraph rule, go to “Paragraph Rules” in the “Options” in the Paragraph Palette and set up what you like. By creating really fat rules and varying the offset, you can even create what looks like coloured table cells. That combined with tabs will start to look like a table.
< 14 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables InDesign has a whole “Table menu which is very helpful if you are designing forms or table content with repeating cells and styles. You can put your table into a separate text box or in your main text box, so that it will be able to shift when content is added or deleted above it (be careful though). 1. To create a table, put your cursor in the text box where you want the table to start and go to Table > Insert Table, fill out how many rows and columns, and whether you want a header and footer row (this can all be changed later). Or just place a document from Word or Excel that you know has a table.
< 15 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables InDesign has a whole “Table menu which is very helpful if you are designing forms or table content with repeating cells and styles. You can put your table into a separate text box or in your main text box, so that it will be able to shift when content is added or deleted above it (be careful though). 2. To edit your table overall, activate your text box containing the table, make sure you are using the Type Tool and place it anywhere in a table cell. Now you can access Table > Table Options > Table Setup.
< 16 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables 3. In Table > Table Options > Table Setup you can make decisions on number of rows and columns, row strokes, columns strokes, fills, headers and footers.
< 17 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables This is an InDesign table consisting of 6 columns and 5 rows.
This is a table column (yellow).
Cells automatically adjust in height when text is added.
You can adjust column and rows by dragging the lines between them.
You can even add tab stops within cells, but to tab content, you have to use “option” > “tab”. This is a table row (blue)
Just hitting “tab” on its own will just move your cursor to the next cell over.
Hold down the “Shift” key to just drag one line independently.
You can import tables You can have some of from Word, just check the strokes dotted or “import options” after dashed or a different hitting “place” and make colour. sure you preserve tables. You can merge several cells, here I have merged three.
You can change the thickness and colour of each stroke around each cell.
You can also choose have invisible cell strokes.
Remember, the Type tool has to be active for you to be able to do anything.
You can create table and cell style sheets as well. But they can conflict with each other.
No, there is no colour mixing, I just made this green. Sorry.
You can set cell spacing and cell height.
< 18 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables 3. To select your whole table, hover over the top left edge of your table until the cursor turns into a tiny diagonal arrow pointing to the bottom right. Click and if your whole table has turned black, it is completely selected. Selecting the whole table is useful to access the “Distribute Rows/Columns Evenly commands if you have distorted your table quite a bit.
< 19 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables 4. To select only a row or a column, hover with the type tool at either the left edge of the row you want to select, or the top edge of the column you want to select. Again you will see a horizontal arrow; click to select the row, or in the case of a column, you will see a vertical arrow pointing down, click to select the column. 5. To select just a table cell, click and drag in any cell. You can now make modifications to the strokes around your cell in the teeny menu at the top.
< 20 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables 6. To manually adjust rows and columns, click on any stroke between two rows or two columns, a double-pointed arrow will appear and you can drag to where you want the stroke to go. 7. You can also select two or more cells and merge them. But be careful, it can get buggy if you start to get too complex. Don’t keep merging and unmerging cells, make decisions in advance about your table setup.
< 21 >
InDesign tables > 2) using InDesign tables 8. Finally, if you are: > doing a lot of repetitive tables > or have a preferred way of setting up tables > or if you are creating a template document, > or if you have a house style to follow ... you can set up table and cell styles under Window > Styles > Table Styles. Note that these apply to the layout of your table and cells. You can specify paragraph and character styles from your existing Paragraph and Character Styles within your Table Styles.

InDesign — getting files ready to print Overview > print specifications > reading a print quote > imposition > CMYK > spot colours (PANTONE colour fans) > separations preview > bleeds > trim > pressready PDF > packaging files for printing, zipping, upload > proofing > press checking
< 27 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > print specifications You can use a check list at first, create a list of variable the printer needs to know. You need to submit this before you get a quote anyway. Make adjustments as needed, get a revised quote. Submit details again with your print job. Do not assume they know anything about your project. Good business practice: Put everything in writing. Get client to sign off in writing (email OK).

InDesign — getting files ready to print > imposition Printer Spreads vs. Reader Spreads OK to leave your file in reader spreads, printers have imposition software. You do not have to set up a separate file for your cover, unless the cover is a different size due to pockets, or in case of a book.
< 31 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > CMYK Convert to CMYK and resave all files as name_cmyk.psd and make sure they are at least 300 dpi resolution at 100%. Check CMYK output in your Pantone colour book to be sure of what the colours look, or get a high-quality CMYK laser print at least once. < 32 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > spot colours (PANTONE colour fans) Choose spot colours from these fans, not from your screen. Clear spot colours with clients, show them the PANTONE fan or swatches. Especially important for identity/ logos. Create correct spot colours in InDesign. Check for unused colours and delete them. Look for duplicates and resolve them.
< 33 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > separations preview Window > Output > Separations Preview Careful with InDesign drop shadows, colours set to multiply or partial transparency, duplicate colours, and even text wrap around EPS files. Make sure you only have the colours in your file that will actually be printed. Dielines are a separate “colour”, call it “dieline”.
< 34 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > bleeds 1/8” normally or check with printer > trim size confirm this keep any text at least 1/8” or more away from the trim edge
< 35 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > press-ready PDF Printers often have settings for this — ask what they prefer Otherwise set up a saved setting yourself I always include InDesign packaged files, as well as press-ready PDF
< 36 >
InDesign — getting files ready to print > packaging files, use conventions for naming folders and files > zipping files > upload to printer via ftp or other methods
< 37 >
Printing followup > proofing be clear on what proofs you are getting - digital proof or blueline is for folding - “kodak” or “press proof” for colour > press checking clear with the printer, they will call you get a tour of the print shop I always, always press check (few exceptions, as in a reprint or I have another calamity) < 38 >
