It is our goal to meet the needs of our students with active clinical participation, classroom instruction and interpersonal relationships. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, a national accrediting agency, our Athletic Training Program is ready to equip you with the skills you need for a career in athletic training. Once you enter into the Athletic Training Program, you are part of the athletic training family at Sterling College. GET READY TO DO SOMETHING The athletic training majors don’t sit around and watch other people work – they roll up their sleeves and help! We believe that you can’t learn procedures sitting at a desk. You need to practice your craft in order to become proficient. So learn about the science of taping an ankle in class, but be prepared to discover the art of taping by practicing often because some day you will need to tape an ankle that is actually injured. READY TO HELP YOU GROW Our faculty love athletic training and are eager to share their knowledge and experience with you. With a variety of backgrounds, each professor brings a unique skill set and expertise to discussions, lectures and hands-on training. Spending time with each member of the athletic training team will help you grow in knowledge and expand your view of the athletic training profession.


ATP ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS This is a competitive program and application to this program does not guarantee admittance. Students declaring athletic training as a major will be given an athletic training-conditional status until full acceptance into the program. Most students apply to the program at the end of their first year. The quota of applicants accepted into the ATP is limited by faculty to student ratios and the highly individualized nature of this program.

ADMISSION TO THE ATP IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11.

Maintain a minimum 2.5 overall gpa. Complete AT 242, AT 243, and AT 255 with a minimum of a 2.0 gpa (C). Documentation of 50 hours of direct observation of the athletic training profession. Completion of an Athletic Training Program application form. Letter of application stating why you want to apply to our program and why you want to become a certified athletic trainer. Submit two letters of recommendation. Neither letter can come from a fellow student, friend or family member. Complete a formal interview with the ATP Interview Committee. Documentation of receiving Hepatitis B immunization or a signed copy of the form “Hepatitis B Vaccine Declination Assumption of Risk and Release.” Present proof of current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR-PR certifications or its equivalent. A current (within one year from application) health history and physical examination. Students must read, sign and return the “Technical Standards for Admission into the Athletic Training Program” found on the ATP curriculum verifying that the student meets the minimal required technical standards for admission into the program.

AN EMPHASIS ON SERVANT LEADERSHIP

You will hear a lot about servant leadership in the Athletic Training Program at Sterling College because we believe that God has called us to serve one another, caring for the whole person. Once you are admitted into the program, you will be placed in one practicums per semester where you will shadow a certified athletic trainer. In this placement, you will practice athletic training, but more importantly, serve others. Whether you are at a local junior high school, high school or college, treating injuries with a respect and awareness of the injured person is one of the most important things we can teach you.



MEET OUR FACULTY... JASON COLES, HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER Jason Coles graduated from Sterling College with a B.S. in Athletic Training and Exercise Science. After graduation he completed his M.S. in Athletic Training at Ohio University. Coles was happy to return to Sterling College to work with his mentors and friends. He now works with the football and men’s basketball teams while also serving as an instructor for athletic training. NICOLE GLASGOW, GRADUATE ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER Glasgow provides athletic training services for the volleyball and softball teams. She is a recent graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University with a B.S. in Athletic Training. She works with the Sterling College Athletic Training Program and is pursuing her master’s degree from Fort Hays State University.


ALLEN JETER, ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER Jeter’s primary responsibilities include men’s and women's soccer and baseball. During his summers, he serves as a first aider and camp administrator for Varsity Brands Incorporated. Before coming to Sterling College, Jeter was an athletic trainer for Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. He also served as an athletic training intern at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena, Fla., and as a graduate assistant at Southeastern Louisiana University. He earned his B.S. in Athletic Training from The State University of New York Cortland. He also holds an M.A. in Exercise Science from Southeastern Louisiana University. ERIN LAUDERMILK, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ATHLETIC TRAINING Laudermilk joined the faculty at SC in the fall of 2007. Since then, she has been involved in teaching classes in both the exercise science and athletic training majors, serves as a co-chair for the exercise science department, clinical education coordinator for the Athletic Training Program, and on several committees on campus. She holds an M.S. in Health and Human Performance from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a B.S. in Biology from Saint Joseph’s College. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Education from Northcentral University. RYAN “PETE” MANELY, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ATHLETIC TRAINING Manely serves Sterling College as the director of the Athletic Training Program, co-chair of the exercise science department, associate dean for the School of Professional Studies and a professor. He has worked in the field of athletic training since 1996 and was named the 2010-2011 NAIA Athletic Trainer of the Year. Manely is the current president for the NAIA Athletic Trainer’s Association, is a member of the National Cheer Safety Council and has worked with various organizations like Gatorade, USA Cheer and Varsity Spirit Corporation. Manely earned an associate degree from Barton County Community College and a B.S. in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training and a minor in History from Charleston Southern University. Manely then attended Ohio University where he earned an M.S. in Health, Physical Education and Recreation.


The Sterling College Athletic Training Program enables you to develop and demonstrate all entry-level competencies and proficiencies within the athletic training profession. We coordinate a variety of lectures, labs, clinical experiences and field experiences through a variety of affiliate sites to provide each student education and practice in developing theories and skills common to the profession.
