Our program is rooted in the premise that human beings are created in the image of God and that, for the Christian, the body is the very residence of the Holy Spirit. As you learn about keeping the body active and healthy, your classes will emphasize our responsibility to honor His creation. The exercise science major will prepare you for careers as an educator, recreation manager or wellness coordinator. You will also fulfill the prerequisites for graduate study in a variety of related fields such as kinesiology, nutrition, exercise physiology and athletic administration. BECOME FAMILY The exercise science program talks a lot about being a family. That’s because we are! It isn’t the third aunt twice removed that pinches your cheeks when your 16, it’s the type of family that you choose to be around because of your similar interests and shared passions. The exercise science majors spend time together in class and help each other study. They know their professors personally and even choose to spend time with them outside of class. You won’t just mill around campus for a month trying to find a friend, fellow exercise science majors will be some of the first friends, and family, that you meet.
CONCENTRATION EDUCATION LICENSURE FOR HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Combine your major in exercise science with the professional studies courses from the Department of Education prepare for licensure in Pre K - 12 health and physical education. With classes that will teach you how to coach sports, classroom management and basic first aid, you will graduate equipped to sit for your licensure testing. In conjunction with an education endorsement, a student may also seek a special education endorsement by taking coursework offered through the College's educational consortium, the Associated Colleges of Central Kansas.

Our faculty come from many different fields in and related to exercise science. They have experience in what they teach and love what they do. Each year they invest in their students through curriculum related field trips, attending plays and athletic events, and guiding the students through each level of the program. We even set aside time to spend with our students in small groups outside of class.
KATHERINE “KC” BASSETT, PRO-RATA ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF EXERCISE SCIENCE Bassett has been involved in sports her entire life. She played basketball for Sterling College and now coaches the junior varsity women’s team, is an assistant coach for the varsity women’s team and serves as recruiting coordinator for the Sterling College women's basketball program. She earned her M.S. in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Emporia State University. In spring 2007, Bassett was named Sterling College's Outstanding Female Student of the Year and the Female Athlete of the Year. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Elementary Education. DOROTHY KEMPF, PRO-RATA ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF EXERCISE SCIENCE Dorothy Kempf taught elementary and secondary physical education for 20 years before becoming a professor and collegiate level coach. She was the head men’s and women’s swimming coach at Asbury University for five years, four of which she won the Appalachian Conference Swimming Coach of the Year. She was also awarded the NAIA National Swimming Coach of the year in 2008. Kempf holds an M.A. in Education from Baker University and a B.A. in Education from Emporia State University. ERIN LAUDERMILK, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ATHLETIC TRAINING Laudermilk joined the faculty at SC in the fall of 2007. Since then, she has been involved in teaching classes in both the exercise science and athletic training majors, serves as a co-chair for the exercise science department, clinical education coordinator for the Athletic Training Program, and on several committees on campus. She holds an M.S. in Health and Human Performance from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a B.S. in Biology from Saint Joseph’s College. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Education from Northcentral University.
RYAN “PETE” MANELY, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ATHLETIC TRAINING Manely serves Sterling College as the director of the Athletic Training Program, co-chair of the exercise science department, associate dean for the School of Professional Studies and a professor. He has worked in the field of athletic training since 1996 and was named the 2010-2011 NAIA Athletic Trainer of the Year. Manely is the current president for the NAIA Athletic Trainer’s Association, is a member of the National Cheer Safety Council and has worked with various organizations like Gatorade, USA Cheer and Varsity Spirit Corporation. Manely earned an associate degree from Barton County Community College and a B.S. in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training and a minor in History from Charleston Southern University. Manely then attended Ohio University where he earned an M.S. in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. HANS NICKEL, PRO-RATA ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SPORTS MANAGEMENT Nickel has worked with athletics in both the NAIA and NCAA Division I. Before coming to Sterling, he worked at Wichita State University in the athletic department’s marketing division. He also worked in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference commissioner’s office, as a basketball coach at Augusta High School (Kan.) and as a member of the Augusta Youth Soccer Board of Directors (Kan.). He is currently a professor and sports information director for Sterling College. Nickel graduated from Wichita State University with a B.A. in Sports Administration and a M.Ed. in Sports Management. Nickel brings his passion and experience for marketing, public relations, and organizational media into the classroom. MARY VER STEEG, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF EXERCISE SCIENCE Mary Ver Steeg has taught for 24 years at Sterling College. She also taught high school for eight years and has extensive coaching experience. Her volleyball teams won two KCAC championships and 10 American Volleyball Collegiate Association Team Academic Awards. In 1986 she was inducted into the Northwestern College (Iowa) Athletic Hall of Fame for both her outstanding athletic performance and coaching. In college she was a multisport athlete, competing in tennis, volleyball, basketball and softball. Ver Steeg has been named KCAC Coach of the Year twice and won the McCreery Teaching Award, an award presented to a professor whose efforts have provided noteworthy and innovative instruction to Sterling College students during the academic year. Ver Steeg earned her M.S. in Health and Physical Education from South Dakota State University. She also has a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Northwestern College (Iowa).
