Stetson student Nick Saffan’s photo shows Israeli police clashing with a dissident during a large protest against Arab terrorism in central Jerusalem in response to the kidnapping and murder of three Jewish teens.
Stetson Intern on the Front Lines This past summer, Nick Saffan, sophomore journalism major, traveled to Jerusalem to capture the moments most only hear about in the news. You see Nick interned for an Israel press photography company called Flash90. At 19 years of age, this Stetson student’s photography managed to evoke the emotions of the Israelis well enough to be published by media outlets including The Jewish Press in Brooklyn and internationally in Actualité Juive in Paris and on TLV1 in Tel Aviv before the summer was even over. Though he was interested in journalism for quite a while, it wasn’t until four years ago that Saffan picked up his camera to start capturing the world with more than just words. In high school, Saffan was a student at Poynter Institute for Media Studies, where he participated in their student journalism program, along with other aspiring journalists. Poynter Institute is a school dedicated to teaching and motivating journalists and media leaders by promoting excellence and integrity in the craft and the practical leadership of a successful business. Three years into this institution, Saffan knew the direction he wanted to take in his career. During Saffan’s first year at Stetson, his interest in Israel was kindled when he took international journalism with Nick Tatro, adjunct professor of journalism.
Saffan’s interest and curiosity about Israel led him to Andy Dehnart, Ph.D., assistant professor of journalism, and Stephanie Ryan, internship coordinator – both helped clear a path to an internship with Flash90. “Flash90 gave me weekly and sometimes daily assignments. I had some freedom with what I was assigned, but mostly I was limited to where they sent me because of company insurance reasons,” Saffan explains. Because Saffan does not speak Hebrew, he was a true observer of the action going on in Israel. During his six-week internship, Saffan witnessed violence in Zion Square. “They were calling for retaliation and for death to Muslims.” One of Saffan’s photos of this riot was his first to be published. Saffan is looking to make photojournalism his career, traveling the world and taking in all the excitement. “Adrenaline is nice,” he says. He says the internship was an unforgettable experience with endless adventure and wonder packed into six short weeks that totaled in cost to be less than summer classes. “I’m a better photographer now.” See Saffan’s work at www.nicksaffan.com/Portfolio/ — Grace Aguda

You’ll see many cool things when you visit Stetson... a historic pet-friendly campus, palm trees, welcoming students... But what you may not see truly sets Stetson apart from the competition. You will probably never see snow or fall foliage (hey it’s sunny Florida after all) here, but we wanted to share with you a few of the many amazing things that make us significant. You’ll find experiences and opportunities to do things you would otherwise never have the chance to do.
The Stetson Beekeeping Club took off (no pun intended) last semester. The club has several hives and over 100,000 bees that are helping gardens and citrus trees thrive around campus. The club focuses on educating students about the importance of bees and the conservation of this vital resource. Plus, the hives produce honey that is sold locally. More at stetson.edu/club

The Gillespie Museum is a hidden gem on campus. The museum focuses on rocks and minerals and works to offer students many educational opportunities relating to earth and environmental science. The geologic collection of over 15,000 minerals, rocks and fossils is one of the oldest and largest in the southeastern U.S. and it just happens to be on campus, down the road from the Stetson University School of Business Administration. Swing Dance? Yep - It has a very special quality about it. Maybe you have only seen swing dancing in “old” movies. The Swing Dance club at Stetson University teaches students of all varying levels of experience, and teaches the complicated moves stepby-step so by the end of the night everyone is able to have fun and dance.
I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love a good farmer’s market and Hatter Harvest is as good as it gets. What’s amazing is it’s completely student-led. Students help build environmental awareness and real-world leadership experience while providing the campus and surrounding community locally grown organic food options. SPREES Please: Stetson’s Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is a tight-knit, lively, community of studies who happen to share a common interest in Slavic countries. Seven full-time faculty members will teach you as much as you want to know. Form cultural events to making your own Russian food, SPREES is the bee’s knees. Yeah, we went there.
Uncouth Hour is the “open mic night” on Stetson’s campus. Uncouth Hour welcomes and encourages every art from. Ready to get up on stage? From poetry to piano, cello, to Plato, the sky’s the limit. It is a completely safe space to be creative. Uncouth has a light atmosphere with good vibes from the audience and fellow performers.
Hatterpalooza Hosted by Stetson’s Hatter Productions and the MainStreet DeLand Association, Hatterpalooza is an epic festival featuring local music and national recording artists. Stetson students vote on headline acts, bringing in artist like We the Kings, Andy Grammer and DJ 3LAU. Hatter Productions is always doing something amazing.

Merit Scholarships.
Need-based Financial Aid.
Academically talented students are well rewarded at Stetson. 95% of our incoming class receives a merit scholarship, based on a combination of high school GPA, standardized test scores, recommendation letters, and community service. Merit awards range from $5,000 to full tuition. Below are a few of the many scholarships available: Hatter Scholarship (up to $16,000) Deans Scholarship (up to $21,000) Faculty Scholarship (up to $25,000) Presidential Scholarship (up to $29,000) Transfer Scholarship (up to $17,000) Transfer PTK Scholarship ($2,000)
Families with financial need are eligible for significant support from federal and state governments. Federal support includes many grant (which do not need to be repaid) and loan opportunities, and Florida residents also are eligible for state-funded grants. In addition, Stetson grants are available to families who demonstrate significant financial need.
Merit scholarships are automatically awarded at the time of admission. You must apply for admission to be considered.
Talent Scholarships. With a nationally-renowned music school and Division I Athletics, Stetson attracts top-quality performers and athletes. To reward students gifted in these areas, Stetson provides substantial funding for music and athletic scholarships.
Service Scholarships. Stetson is proud to house the only Bonner Scholars program in Florida. The program provides an intense community service experience built into the academic curriculum for students who are committed to making a profound difference in the world through social justice. Bonner Scholarships are offered to that’s motivated and impassioned students who seek meaningful change through focused community engagement.

We have approximately 2,900 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate and law students. Our undergraduate students come from 42 states and 51 countries. With 424 faculty, the student-faculty ratio is 12:1. The School of Music offers a 6:1 student-faculty ratio.
Accreditation We are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS). Our School of Music is accredited by NASM, while the School of Business Administration is accredited by AACSB International.

Housing A variety of housing options are available on campus, from the traditional residence hall to suite and apartment style living. We also offer housing grouped around specific themes, academic living-learning communities, Greek housing and even “pet-friendly” housing.
Student Life Stetson is home to more than 110 student organizations, including service and special interest groups, student government, social fraternities and sororities and 17 scholastic and honorary societies including Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board and Alpha Kappa Psi.

Stetson Professor Honored With Fulbright Scholarship Assistant Professor of English Mark Powell has won a Fulbright Scholarship Award, allowing him to teach at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra in Slovakia beginning in September as part of a sabbatical that will last the fall and spring semesters. An established author with four novels, Powell has also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and the Vaclav Havel Fellowship in Play-writing to the Prague Seminar. Powell received his B.A. in English at Citadel, his M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of South Carolina, and his M.A.R. in religion and literature at the Yale Divinity School. Stetson Assistant English Professor and novelist Mark Powell wins a Fulbright to teach in Slovakia.
