What does it take for a university to claim to be one-of-a-kind? And mean it? True distinctions like being a Bonner Scholar school. Being consistently ranked as one of the South’s top regional universities. Offering one of the nation’s first Digital Arts programs. Having a State Department consultant teaching political science. Supporting shoulder-to-shoulder research (for undergraduates!) with a renowned neuroscientist. Boasting a location within 30 minutes of Florida’s famed beaches. Yes, it takes a lot. And a lot is exactly what Stetson offers.

Learning Valued For Its Values. Stetson educates good students to lead great lives. How do we define a great life? Obviously, career success is one measure. However, it doesn’t carry more weight than being an informed citizen of the world, making ethical decisions, supporting social justice, treating everyone with dignity, and building community by reaching out to the community.

Listening, Thinking, Rethinking. The Howard Thurman Lecture Series seeks solutions to social, religious and ethnic dilemmas. Recent speakers include civil rights historian Raymond Arsenault on “Freedom Riders and the Struggle for Racial Justice” and poet Julius Thompson who engaged the crowd with “Slavery, Cultural Caste and the Future of America.”

“When Stetson was named one of the only 27 Bonner Scholar colleges and universities in the country, it was an easy decision for me to delay graduate school for a year and help institute the program. It is a remarkable validation of a long tradition of meaningful service at Stetson. A tradition that has empowered my desire to work with vulnerable youth.”

Matt Morton Matt Morton graduated from Stetson in 2006 and received his Masterʼs in Evidence Based Social Intervention in 2009 from Oxford University in England. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree at University of Oxford on a full scholarship. Matt was recently named UKʼs International Student of the Year by the British Council. Ask him to describe The Bonner Scholar Program and heʼll tell you, “It provides four-year community service scholarships to students who engage in ongoing service work during their college careers.”

A Heritage For The Future. Stetson is the first private university in Florida and one of only 270 nationwide to have a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most esteemed undergraduate honors organization. Our highly respected liberal arts foundation spotlights the classic skills of written and oral communications, analytical and critical thinking and problem solving.

only you “If you want to sit in the back of the room and hide, Stetson is not your place. Students here speak up, join in, reach out.” —Eileen Betancourth Maspeth, NY

Our 165-acre campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As proud as we are of that fact, the future of our campus is the main focus. For instance, the newly renovated Lynn Business Center is Floridaʼs first Green building certified by the U.S. Green Building Campus. And, our new 1.5 acre Florida native plant garden is a great enhancement to our environmental studies facilities.

Sampson Hall Sampson Hall (shown here) is a beautiful example of the stately architecture that will surround you at Stetson. Under its roof are the art department, art history department, Duncan Art Gallery, foreign language department, and the study abroad office. Note the original inscription above the entry – “Education is Power.” True then, true now, true always.

Living The Evening News. Each year, Stetson sponsors the Floyd M. Riddick Model Senate and Model UN. Students adopt the identity of current senators and ambassadors. During the sessions they hold committee meetings and draft legislation in an open (and always lively) debate guided by a professional parliamentarian from Washington, D.C.

Stetson offers study abroad programs during the fall, spring and summer in Avignon, France; Freiburg, Germany; Hong Kong, China; Guanajuato, Mexico; Moscow, Russia; Madrid, Spain; Oxford, United Kingdom; Innsbruck, Austria; Edinburgh, Scotland and various locations in Australia and New Zealand.

“I canʼt say enough about Stetsonʼs commitment to career services. The support I received is a key reason I felt confident about applying for summer internships in New York City – fashion firms, marketing firms, event planners. I landed an internship with Sarah Hall Productions, one of the lifestyle and entertainment industryʼs leading publicity groups. Talk about adding a stand-out experience to my resume!”

Jennifer Fish Jennifer Fish is a senior majoring in Marketing with a minor in Sociology and hails from Marlborough, Connecticut. She had her sights set on attending college in the South – a “big football school” to be exact. “Then,” she explains, “I visited Stetson, and it was love at first sight. So here I am – happily involved in everything from my sorority and student government to the Jewish Student Organization.”

Real Experience: Predictor Of Doing Real Well. Over half of Stetson students do internships – like the computer science major who landed a coveted one with Google. Business students personally manage an investment portfolio of over $3,000,000 through the Roland George Investment Program. Individual students pursue relevant projects – like the first place winner of Habitat for Humanity International’s Youth Programs video-advocacy contest.

only you “As an Ambassador, I give tours to prospective students and their parents. One question I always get is, “What is your favorite thing about Stetson?” The answer I always give is, “Student-faculty relationships – they’re phenomenal.” —Kristen Brown Orlando, FL

If youʼre interested in doing research, you donʼt have to wait for graduate school. We take giving students the opportunity to conduct research as an undergraduate so seriously, there is a Deanʼs Fund to financially support student projects. In addition, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience is a competitive grant for students who want to pursue projects with a faculty member.

Subject Matters Here is a quick grab of presentations from a recent Stetson Undergraduate Research and Creative Arts Symposium: Sing-A-Ring: A Custom Ring Tone Creation System for Mobile Platforms The Efficacy Of Owner-Applied OraVet, A Canine Dental Barrier Sealant The Influence Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) On Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania

All the numbers on your side. A choice of over 60 majors and minors add up to practically endless possibilities (i.e. majoring in guitar with a minor in business). A student/faculty ratio of 11:1 and average class size of 20 add up to undivided attention. The fact 97 percent of professors hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree adds yet another dimension – true academic rigor.

“Undecided” has always been a popular college major. What do we have to say about that? Great! Of course, as you would expect from Stetson, we have more than a strong opinion, we have a solid solution – the Discovery Program. It is designed to put you on the right path with the help of specially trained academic and career advisors and lets you “test drive” a variety of disciplines.

“Music majors at Stetson constantly do what we all love best, perform. Or, to put it another way, prove yourself. You present one piece in recital each semester. Then there are the more nerve-wracking junior and senior recitals. And mixed in with that are many chances to accompany. Of course, for me, that meant even more reasons to play Stetsonʼs remarkable Beckerath pipe organ.”

Josiah Armes Josiah Armes, who majored in Organ Performance, graduated from Stetson at the age of nineteen (he entered at fifteen – one of those musical prodigies). His next stop? Graduate work at Yale University School of Music. Clearly, the heavy performace load at Stetson served him well. The Yale program is extremely competitive because, as Josiah explains, “The Yale Music School offers free tuition.”

A Community That Truly Qualifies As A Community. Over 70 percent of Stetson undergraduates live on campus in rooms with cable television, phone service, wired and wireless internet service. However, it is not amenities that make this a community, it is an attitude. Stetson is about inclusion, mutual respect and understanding that friends made here are friends made for life.

only you “I tell you this not to toot my own horn, but to give deserved credit to Stetson – I was thrilled to win the 2006 Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition Grand Prize. A great day for me and my school.” —Donovan Singeltary Crestview, FL

We like to say your “things to do” list is endless at Stetson. The real value of that situation is your “ways to connect” list is also endless. As youʼll observe if youʼre out and about during a class break or other busy time, this is an open-face campus. People like each other. They smile. They speak. A large portion of the credit goes to the fact there are so many fun and engaging outlets for our students to discover each other.

Join Right In Stetson has well over 100 student organizations. Name a few? Sure. On the fun side: Chess Club, Film Club, Judo Club, Swim Club. On the service side: Best Buddies, Into The Streets, Roots & Shoots. On the academic side: Society of Physics, Russian Club, Student Accounting Association. On the Greek side: six national sororities, seven national fraternities.

Champions In Anybody’s Playbook. All our teams fall in the winner’s category. We’re just using baseball as an example of Stetson’s athletic prowess – 17 players with professional contracts (since 2000!), 25 All-Americans, six conference championship trophies and a coach who has amassed over 1000 wins. Pretty wow, right?

“I was a second-semester freshman and Dr. Reddish was teaching ʻLife & Letters of Paul.ʼ It was a 300-level class so I needed permission. He said – if you think you can pass my class as a freshman, go for it. I think he knew I would take the challenge and not back down. I did great and he became one of my favorite professors in the process.

Ansley Faulkner Ansley Faulkner graduated in 2007 with a degree in religious studies. She is currently working for Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Jacksonville as a coordinator of the “Big in School program. A key component of her case work is pairing adult and high school student volunteers with troubled kids to serve as their mentors.

What’s Happening Is A Great Read. The Reporter, Stetson’s weekly campus newspaper (and the oldest college newspaper in Florida) – lives up to its name and really “reports” what’s happening on campus. Grab a cup of coffee and get ready for the latest – campus debates, proposed solutions, upcoming events, sports results and sure-to-starta-conversation opinion pieces.

Every college has “the place” that is “the heart” of campus. At Stetson, that special somewhere just happens to be a large and welcoming recreation facility that, by design, makes the heart beat a little faster and a lot healthier. It also makes relationships tighter, stress less likely and everyday days just a lot more fun!

Hollis Center Hollis Center is where students, faculty and staff members converge to enjoy the Olympic size outdoor pool (laps, water volleyball and more), aerobics room (yoga, step-toning and more), game room (pool tables, electronic darts and more), field houes (intramural basketball, badminton and more), plus a computer bar, lounge with flat-screen televisions – and yes, more.

DeLand Calls Itself “The Athens of Florida.” Overstatement? Not at all. There are opportunities to visit museums, listen to a variety of music and plenty of parks to engage your interest, such as the African-American Museum of Art, the Little Symphony at the Cultural Arts Center and Painters Pond Park, to name a few.

Think You Can Warm Up To This? The average temperature in DeLand in the winter is about 61 degrees and ranges around 81 degrees in the summer. We are also less than two hours from St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Tampa. How perfect is that?

“I have set ambitious goals for myself. I want to sing professionally and one day sing with the Metropolitan Opera. Ultimately, I want to start my own opera company. One of the many things I admire about Stetson is the dedication of the faculty. Believe me, my private voice teacher here is just as invested in my success as I am and is working equally hard so I can live those dreams.”

Randy Salinas Randy Salinas, a senior Vocal Performance major, is from Middleburg, Florida. Not only does he sing, he plays the French Horn at Stetson and the mellophone with the 150-member Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. He was part of this professional marching band when it paraded down Pennsylvania Avenue at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. He says he will never forget “the electric atmosphere of that day.

Back To The Fantastic. Stetson’s campus is your connection to an older and more natural Florida. We’re especially lucky to be close to Florida’s most historic river, the St. Johns River; Blue Spring State Park, home of the manatees; the Ocala National Forest; and perhaps the most undeveloped beach on the Atlantic Coast, the Canaveral National Seashore.

Either direction, the trip will take you to international airports, world-class shopping, professional sports and entertainment – including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World.

Hear the word “Florida,” and what is the first thing that comes to mind? The response most often (and immediately) given is “a day at the beach.” If that would be your answer, you have one more terrific reason to make Stetson your school. (Likewise, if you answer “sunny” or “outdoors” or “balmy” or “tan” or “white sand” or “lapping waves” or “seashells” or “etc., etc.”)

Bright Idea The beaches closest to Stetson are beaches considered among the best in the world.
