First, develop an accurate mindset! By Steve Bauer

Real World Resumes

Introduction Before you begin writing or formatting your resume, writing a cover letter or doing absolutely anything related to your job search, I want you to first develop an accurate mindset. Get excited because this part of your resumebuilding process will not only transform how you think, but will put you on the strong side to get what you want professionally. After you understand exactly what employers need, everything will just fall into place.

What do companies and businesses really want? The first thing you want to do is put yourself in an employer’s shoes. Stop for a second and ask yourself: “What does this business want? In fact, what does any business want?

Did you find the answer? I mean, it doesn’t get any more obvious than that. That’s right. Businesses want profits. Money. Lots of it. There you go. The elephant in the room has now been exposed. But businesses aren’t the only employers out there. Who else might you want to work for? NGOs. OK, so what do NGOs want? This one offers you a few more options. Depending on the NGO, its goal might be to increase awareness for a specific issue, advocate the rights of a certain group or offer direct assistance to those in need. So we’ve nailed businesses and NGOs. Is there any other kind of employer? Government. City, state, federal. What does the government want?

The government pretty much deals with information. Its goal is to promote, control or restrict the flow of information based on its agenda. You might also say that it supervises the execution of mega-projects by third-party contractors.

“But,” you might ask, “Why is this so important?” You need to know this to write your professional objective at the top of your resume. When you write that objective, you need to reflect and match it to the sector you want to enter. I’ve never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER seen a single resume where a candidate told me his objective was: “Help you make more cash and, in the process, develop a few more skills that will help me make more of it myself.” How direct and honest is this? You think someone who wrote something like this as their objective might get my attention? You bet they would. This means they

understand the game, they know how it’s played and they’re here to win. Whether I hire them or not will be based on the interview, but you can bet they’ll get my attention.

What kind of people do these employers want to hire? We saw earlier how each of these employers actually has a different objective. The good news is that they all want the same kind of people. Can you guess what those are? It’s easy. They want people who demonstrate two very specific qualities. Now, take a deep breath and empty your mind of absolutely anything else you might be thinking about right now and drill the following two qualities in your brain cells because they will serve you for a lifetime. By Steve Bauer

The ideal candidate(s) will demonstrate the following qualities: 1. (S)he understands clearly what the employer wants. 2. (S)he can produce specific, concrete results and has done it in the past. This is worth repeating in bold, all-capped letters. 1. (S)HE UNDERSTANDS CLEARLY WHAT THE EMPLOYER WANTS. 2. (S)HE CAN PRODUCE SPECIFIC, CONCRETE RESULTS AND HAS DONE IT IN THE PAST. Got it? It’s really simple. There’s no rocket science to getting a job. If you possess these two qualities, all we need to do is get you to demonstrate them to your potential employer and you’ll get the job – and it might be incredibly easy to get a huge salary for it too.

The goal of your resume A lot of people think that the goal of their resume is to get them a job. It’s a good start but we need to get more specific. Your resume is just a benchmark on your way to getting a job. The actual goal of your resume is to get you an interview. That’s it. If your resume gets your potential employer to contact you because (s)he wants to meet you faceto-face, bingo! Your resume did its job. So it must be structured in a way that it makes this potential employer SALIVATE at the very thought of meeting you. Think of it this way... Your resume is simply a pamphlet that advertises what you have to offer. Have you ever received a pamphlet that grabbed your attention and actually got you to call to get By Steve Bauer

more information about the offer it presented? Sure you have. You resume needs to accomplish the same result as that pamphlet you picked up. I’ll repeat this one more time: The goal of your resume is not to get you a job. It’s to get you an INTERVIEW. So you must structure it so as to make your potential employer SALIVATE at the thought of meeting you. Let’s run through the four basic questions that are going through the mind of your prospective employer as (s)he desperately searches for someone to hire: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Does this person understand what I want? Can (s)he deliver the goods? Why should I believe him/her? Why him/her over the others? What’s different about them?

Let me tell you, in over five years of hiring people I’ve never, ever, ever come across ANYONE who could answer those questions for me in person, let By Steve Bauer

The secret that’ll make managers and business owners salivate to meet you Here’s the million dollar secret. You’ll make managers and business owners salivate to meet you through the… .....
